We do, we do, we do-oooooo want to see a Good Burger sequel finally come to life
Bust out the orange soda, it’s time for a celebration! Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell have officially confirmed something ’90s kids have been waiting almost their whole lives for: A Good Burger sequel!
The comedy duo, who starred as Kenan & Kel on the Nickelodeon series of the same name and then the hit movie based on a sketch series they did for All That!, are reprising their iconic roles for the sequel. Mitchell even posted a video to Instagram (set to his song “Blessed Mode”) that offers a first glimpse of the script. And the cherry on top? We’ll likely be seeing some other friendly faces from the past as well: “I can’t tell you who’s coming back but everyone’s going to be super excited and screaming when they see some of the characters,” Mitchell told Popsugar.
“Now we’re cooking!” he wrote alongside the video. “🥣🍔 table read went really good! Good vibes! Good Laughs, Good Burgers!”
Kenan and Kel have been teasing the movie for a while. Last month, at the Grio Awards, they said they were “really close” to making it happen.
“It’s gonna happen, and I think it’s gonna happen soon. We’re gonna figure out when the pocket of time will be to shoot it, but it’s gonna happen,” Kenan told Entertainment Tonight. “It’s closer than it’s ever been. So, I don’t think anything is gonna derail it. We had a reading, like a little private thing just to hear the script that we’ve been working on, out loud—just with a couple friends and a couple people from Paramount and Nickelodeon, and it was so funny.”
Fans of Good Burger may not know that the idea for the sketch series came from Kel, who created the character of Ed when he auditioned for All That! in the ’90s.
“I said, ‘Here’s your pizza’ [in the Ed voice], and from there they were just like, ‘Oh, this guy needs a whole world,’ and they created ‘Good Burger’ around this voice and this character that I created,” he told Popsugar. The sketches were so popular that they became the first Good Burger movie, and a whole generation grew up saying, “Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger, can I take your order?” in that goofy, surfer dude voice that Kel made famous.
Not much else is known just yet about the sequel. But if you’re like us and you truly can’t wait, the original Good Burger is available to stream on STARZ.
