With a long standing reputation for being “The” inventor of the Strawberry WhippedCream Cake, Phoenix Bakery holds it’s place in so many Angelenos hearts and memories. Baking tasty treats since 1938, they became famous throughout Los Angeles for being a little Chinese bakery making a “not so Chinese” cake. 72 years later they still reign as the birthday cake king and queen and specialize in catering to families and celebraties alike.

Imagine a giant moist sponge cake decked out with fresh strawberries, sliced almonds on the side, whipped cream, and a special message running along its diameter. The friendly Chan family keeps the display case stocked and ready to go with their signature treat but if strawberry is not a fave there are many other cakes to choose from as well. 24 hours notice is typically all it takes for special orders. Even if it’s not a birthday, Phoenix has an over abundance of other mouth watering baked goods. They also specialize in Red Velvet Cupcakes, Tiramisu, Sticky Sugar Butterflies cookies, and out of this world Pork Buns.

Located in Chinatown, even a visit can be a full day kid-friendly adventure. This 16 square block district is filled with interesting things to see, great lunch stops,and a plethora of family-owned shops filled with curiosities. Make it even less hassle of a trip and leave the car behind. The Metro Goldline is a quick and the most hassle-free way to get to Chinatown.  Connecting  through Union Station, the Chinatown Stop is located in the heart of the neighborhood.
