So Long Shamrock Shakes: Welcome Wilde Thistle Cafe

Trending Now

What do you feed the kids for the greenest day of the year?  When you’re short on time (so… you’re a parent!) you go for the easy: green pancakes, Shamrock Shakes or maybe Lucky Charms.  But, clearly not so healthy, or authentic.  So you can imagine our delight when we learned that over the rainbow, a little pot of gold had plunked down in Culver City.  Truly Irish scones and soda bread make a very welcome addition to the local culinary scene, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

WildesomuchfunThistle While You Work
Hard to define the hearty Celtic spirit better than a mom of five (don’t you get exhausted just reading that number?) who still makes time to bake scones for the rest of us.  Proprietor Caity Wallace made opening The Wilde Thistle Café on Motor a family affair.  They own it.  They operate it.  They know the backstory behind each scone, sandwich, soda bread, and side of strawberry butter.   Or why Oscar Wilde.  Go ahead.  Ask.

St. Patty Cakes
No better time to hard wire those associations of St. Patrick’s Day with scones.  (Nope.  Not that other grain product…)  Caity’s recipe has quite literally made her famous.  From Tampa to Ashland to her just opened Palms uprising, what has been gracing the LA farmers markets is finally buoyed in the brick and mortar.  Traditional, lemon cranberry, triple ginger, Scottish Oat, cherry chocolate, and orange chocolate oat.  Side options include strawberry butter, tangerine vanilla bean marmalade, or Devonshire clotted cream.  The scones are $2.50 each, the sides, $0.50 each.  Welcome to Celtic culture kids.  Let the River Dancing ensue.

The Celtic tunes?  The tangerine vanilla bean marmalade?  Maybe the Leninade.  Who’s to say.  But something sure gets the kids up and dancing.  A jig by any other name would not resemble those moves.   Beware the dormant Michael Flatley within.

Rethink Your Drink
Sure, they’ve got their hand blended organic teas, their organic coffee from Alana’s Coffee Roasting (beans blended day-of, ergo the freshness savoring pour-over technique), but their cold beverages will twist your tongue is ways that will make you wonder if you did stop at that pub on the way in.  Fiore Uisce, Joia Natural, Thomas Kemper Cream Soda, and our personal pronunciation favorite, Leninade Sparkling Lemonade.  Best part?  We can fill a frosty mug with any one of ‘em with our kids.  Now that is family Patty participation!

If Trivia is Your Type . . .
The heirloom typewriter is endlessly entertaining to kids (who sadly, have often never seen such a device) and the Trivial Pursuit cards on the table encouraged whiling over Celtic Pasties (those British meat pies you’ve heard of, which incidentally, ironically, also come in vegetarian) or baked goods from another farm favorite, Camille’s Confections.  Sandwiches are custom grilled per your preference, however the Wilde Rubin arrives in a stupendous state that reveals why it’s best to leave the recipe decisions in their knowing hands.

Answering The Call of The Wilde
February is here and March is marching in.  Should you care to induct your offspring to a little Celtic culture, here’s a one stop shop for doing so.  With the bill comes a golden butterscotch or four, and an Irish introduction to their traditions and culinary customs. Best part?  Nobody has a headache in the morning to show for it.

Sundays Aren’t Far From the Farm
Should you visit for a leisurely Sunday morning snack, Motor Avenue hosts one of the newer farmers markets to hit the Sunday morning scene.  It’s not the biggest of street markets but it’s got its share of produce, handmade soaps, a nice petting zoo and even a lama.  There’s free parking behind restaurant (just take the alley immediately north), and Motor Avenue is a few short blocks up.  Easy walk.  Easier River Dance if you’ve already partaken of the sconage.
