Actress and new mom, Danielle Fishel recently talked to People magazine about motherhood, her 10-week-old son Adler’s early birth, and the newborn’s time in the NICU.

According to Fishel, Adler’s unexpected hospital stay was due to a fluid build-up in his lungs. The newborn was rushed to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles when his lungs didn’t heal themselves. The new mama told People, “Adler is bottle-fed because of the issue that he had, something called chylothorax. It’s a leak in the lymphatic system.”

After 12 days in the hospital, Fishel (and husband Jensen Karp) got news no parent wants, “To hear, ‘We have bad news: The fluid has tripled, and now we no longer think we’re the best place for him. This feels much more like an emergency and we need to rush him to Children’s Hospital,’ was extremely scary.”

While in the hospital doctors told the new parents that they would need to tap Adler’s lungs to drain the fluid. Luckily, the newborn’s lungs started to heal and he didn’t need the surgical procedure.

Fishel went on to explain, “Unfortunately, my breast milk was creating fluid in his lungs, and we had to take him off of breast milk and put him on a specially formulated formula that doesn’t use the lymphatic system.”

At three weeks old, baby Adler was finally healthy enough to go home with his parents. Karp told People, “For every first-time parent, it’s an adjustment to know it wasn’t ideal, but he’s healthy and he’s going to make it. We have the best doctors around us, etc. Those are the things you kind of ease into.”

If you thought you escaped flu season unscathed, you might want to hold off on the celebration for a bit. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning the country that flu season isn’t over yet.

Luckily flu season has been pretty mild so far this year, but the CDC wants to remind everyone that the season isn’t quite over yet. The agency put out a health alert warning that influenza viruses are still circulating and that H3N2, an influenza strain known to cause more severe illnesses, is now gaining steam and making up a greater proportion of flu cases than it did early in the season when the milder H1N1 and influenza B were most prominent.

While the end of the season, which is just around the corner—flu season traditionally ends in May—the bad news is the flu shots protect better against those milder strains than they do against this H3N2 strain.

Until flu season officially comes to a close, the CDC recommends that people continue to be vigilant about their health, like washing hands regularly, staying home when they are sick and getting treated with antiviral medication at the first sign of illness. If you can still find one, it’s also never too late to get that flu shot.

What would have been an historic moment for women with NASA’s first all-female spacewalk has turned into just another spacewalk—with both men and women involved—all thanks to a spacesuit that doesn’t fit. But it’s not all bad news, as you’ll see.

NASA has just announced the history-making all-female spacewalk originally scheduled to take place later this week has been canceled. Instead of astronauts Christina Koch and Anne McClain, the two-person team will now consist of Koch and male astronaut, Nick Hague. The reason for the last minute change? There is only one spacesuit aboard the International Space Station in a size medium. Yes, you read that right.

https://twitter.com/DaveMosher/status/1110293059131109378

Forget Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, in the saga of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Space Suit only one of the women can make the walk because there are no other spacesuits on board the International Space Station to fit them. No great change comes about without some growing pains and as more women head to space, clearly NASA needs to update its wardrobe to accommodate astronauts of all sizes.

While it seems like there’s nothing positive to this story, the truth is the call to nix the all-female spacewalk was ultimately up to the astronaut—and that’s a good thing. McClain decided she was not comfortable wearing the spacesuit for which she had initially been fitted—and there just wasn’t another suit available in the best size for her body. “

McClain learned during her first spacewalk that a medium-size hard upper torso—essentially the shirt of the spacesuit — fits her best. Because only one medium-size torso can be made ready by Friday, Mar. 29, Koch will wear it,” NASA said in a statement.

We have to remember: the mission to get more women into space and into roles that have been traditionally male-dominated isn’t necessarily a sprint, but more of a marathon. According to a recent report on diversity in space exploration, women made up only 8 percent of active astronauts in the 1970s. That number has increased steadily over the decades, with females now making up 32 percent of all astronauts in the world.

So yes, we will see that historic all-female spacewalk—just not this week. Hopefully as our kids grow up, all-women space teams won’t be big headlines either—because they’ll simply be the norm.

In the meantime, we applaud McClain for trusting her gut and refusing to do something that doesn’t feel right for her body and safety—and that’s a lesson all women and girls can take away.

If the home of America’s favorite cave-dwelling cartoon characters is on your family’s travel bucket list, then you’d better act fast. Bedrock City, the iconic Flintstones roadside attraction, is about to go the way of the dinosaurs.

This page right out of history is about to be history as Bedrock City, the Flintstones-themed attraction in Arizona, prepares to shut down after this summer. The park—which has been open and family run since the 1970s—was bought earlier this year by developers.

Before it is completely gone, developer Troy Morris plans to give fans one last chance to visit Bedrock City. The spot, which is a popular detour for travelers heading to the Grand Canyon, will reopen its diner, gift shop and RV park in June for one last summer before it’s closed for good.

While it will be sad to say farewell to Fred, Wilma, Barney and Betty, it’s not all bad news. The 30-acre property will be redeveloped into a new theme park called Raptor Ranch, which will be perfect for young travelers once its built. The new attraction will feature at least a few remnants of its pre-historic predecessor as Morris says he plans to keep Bedrock City’s brontosaurus slide, which will be the centerpiece of a playground. The total renovation will take up to five years to complete.

Brace yourself and get ready for some price fluctuations at Whole Foods. When Amazon got its hands on the grocery retailer they almost immediately dropped prices—much to the joy of the company’s customers. But now recent reports point to the gleeful time of deep discounts and slashed prices as coming to an end.

The Wall Street Journal was first to break the news, giving shoppers pause before their next shopping trips. According to a statement from a Whole Food spokesperson to Business Insider and Today.com, the “increased costs from suppliers due to materials, labor and transportation” are at the root of the recent price increases.

Along with inflation-related increases, expiring contracts between Whole Foods Market and item manufacturers are also a cause for the change in price points. More specifically, nearly 700 items sold at Whole Foods have contracts that are set to expire soon. While customers will see increased prices for some of these items, you’ll also see about half of the products disappear from store shelves entirely.

Even though some of the changes will mean you’ll pay more—or won’t have the chance to buy the items in Whole Foods stores—it’s not all bad news. A Whole Foods spokesperson also told Business Insider that new contracts will mean price reductions for more than 100 items.

If it seems like you’re seeing fewer baby bumps and birth announcements, you are correct. According to new research America’s fertility rate is declining.

A new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control found that in 2017, the total fertility rate for the United States was 16 percent lower than the population replacement rate, which is 2,100 births per 1,000 women over their lifetime. Although U.S. fertility rates have been on the decline for a while, this latest data represents the sharpest drop in recent years.

The report, which breaks down the fertility rate by state, found that only two states, South Dakota and Utah, had total fertility rates above replacement level. The location with the lowest rate was Washington, D.C., which had a rate of just 1,421 per 1,000 women.

It’s not all bad news, however. Some of this decline could be due to the fact that teenage pregnancy rates have also decreased. “We’ve been seeing, year after year, a precipitous drop in the number of births to teenage girls,”Dr. John Rowe, a professor at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, told NBC News.

“That’s good news. Not only are these children not having children, but they’re also getting a chance to finish high school. And that makes a huge difference to their lives.”

Can’t get your smartphone-obsessed kids to answer your calls? There’s an app for that—the ReplyASAP app for parents to be exact—and if your kids tend to “forget” to call, they will never forget again.

Designed by dad Nick Herbert, the simple to use app allows you to freeze your kid’s phone when they ignore your calls and texts. They are then unable to use their phones until they send you a response. It can also be set to sound an alarm if the phone is in silent mode.

https://twitter.com/OnlyInBOS/status/901806507544772608

As WCNC reports, the app has already been downloaded 75,000 times since it launched a little over a year ago and it’s not hard to see why. The concept is pretty genius.

The app is free, although for a few bucks you can upgrade to unlock more features, like adding additional phones if you have more than one forgetful teenager. The only bad news is ReplyASAP is currently only available for Android users; according to PureWow, an iOS version is in the works and will be available soon.
