Newborn Tips from a Delivery Nurse

As an expecting parent, there are soon to be a lot of new experiences you will encounter. As your baby grows, you will grow with them, taking one step at a time. Carole Kramer Arsenault RN, IBCLC, and founder of Boston Baby Nurse & Nanny, shares her top newborn tips as you enter into the world of parenthood.

The First 48 Hours in the Hospital

Skin-to-Skin: Both you and your baby will most likely be wide-awake immediately after birth so enjoy cuddling skin-to-skin. This will help baby transition to life outside of the womb, regulating their temperature and blood sugar levels. If you plan on breastfeeding, this is a good time to try it out and promote a successful latch. Don’t stress if skin-to-skin or breastfeeding don’t happen immediately after birth; you’ll have plenty of time for both of you to enjoy it in the postpartum room. Partners can offer skin-to-skin time too; it’s helpful while Mom delivers the placenta and gets stitches if required.

Breast Feeding: If you are breastfeeding, remember that although it is natural and has been around forever, it does not come naturally for every mom and baby. Some newborns need a little time to learn how to breastfeed effectively. Stay positive if your baby is not latching immediately; there are many ways to remedy this. Ask your nurse for assistance and be sure to request a lactation consultant stop by as well. The best advice I can give you is that if it hurts for more than 30 seconds after latching then gently edge your clean, pinky finger in between the corner of baby’s mouth and your nipple to break the suction. Take them off and try again. You want your baby to learn a good, deep latch so that they’re getting enough milk and you are both enjoying the experience.

Heading Home as a Family of Three

Bathing Your Newborn: Newborns only need to be bathed every two to three days, in between wipe your baby’s neck and bottom with a warm washcloth, daily. To give a bath, fill the baby bathtub with lukewarm water before placing your baby in. Their head and ears should be well above the water line. Place a warm washcloth on a large exposed area of skin, such as baby’s belly, so they are less likely to become chilled and cry.

Start by washing their face with just water on a washcloth. Then use baby soap on their body and hair. Make sure to get those little crevices and between the toes. Rinse your baby well and try to avoid pouring water down the front of your baby’s face. When you are done, place your hands firmly under your baby’s armpits and use the tips of your fingers to support their neck. Slowly raise your baby up and gently place them onto a prepared towel.

Feeding Baby: Your most important job is to make sure that your baby is getting enough to eat. The goal is to have your baby back at his birth weight at the two-week checkup. If you need to supplement with a bottle as mom’s milk comes in, offer the smallest and slowest paced nipple size. This should help the baby get back on the breast without getting frustrated because it will be a similar paced feed from breast to bottle.

Burp your baby in between breasts if you are breastfeeding. Bottle fed babies will need to get burped more due to more air seeping in through the artificial nipple. During the first two weeks, burp a bottle fed baby every one to two ounces; as time goes on you can burp halfway through the bottle. If your baby fusses or spits out the nipple, try to burp him before finishing the feeding. Burp for about a minute and if nothing comes out, then you’re done. You can burp your baby with him resting up right on your chest or by sitting your baby upright on your lap, using one hand to support his chin and neck and the other to pat his back.

Safe & Comfortable Sleep: Your baby’s crib or bassinet should not contain any wedges, sleep positioners, blankets, pillows, bumpers or stuffed animals. If you follow the list of SIDS-prevention methods, the risks decrease dramatically. Avoid overheating by dressing your baby in cotton to allow air to circulate around baby’s body. As a rule of thumb, dress your baby in one more layer than yourself because they cannot yet regulate their body temperature.

Put your newborn in a bassinet next to your bed and, “sleep when your baby sleeps.” This is especially important in the first couple of months. If he spits up, he will turn his head, or cough and cry. Don’t worry, you will wake up. The bottom line here is that in order to take the absolute best care of your baby, you need to be well-rested.

Set up Baby Stations around Your House: This is especially helpful if your house is more than one level or if you gave birth to multiples. In a basket, put together some of the following supplies: wipes, diapers, cream, burp cloths, swaddling blankets, an extra outfit, a water bottle and a snack for yourself. Remember it’s important to take care of yourself too so you can be the best parent possible for your new baby.

Every new parent runs into one hiccup or another when it comes to how they envisioned their first few days with their baby. Do your best to try and go with the flow—you’ll be much happier if you give yourself some slack right from the beginning! If you have a baby (or you’re pregnant), you’re probably wondering, “why does something so tiny need so much gear?” We get it. Babies can be unpredictable; will they nap or won’t they, guzzling milk or not hungry at all, scream-crying or cooing and snuggling. For that reason, bring a baby somewhere, anywhere, and you need stuff. We are all about multi-tasking so we can save money, space and sanity—no matter where you are.

Big news: it (now) exists, thanks to one of our favorite baby safety brands, Regalo! This portable bassinet is perfect for playtime or nap time, indoors or out, and so easy to set up. It’s safe and secure; whether you’re multitasking, working from home, or on-the-go, the My Play Baby is a must-have. Read on for five reasons why you need this on your wish list ASAP!

It's a Twofer

Wanna play? No problem. Wanna sleep? No problem. (Well, for the baby, at least.) The My Play Baby is a lightweight, foldable, portable infant bassinet that's the best friend you didn't know an inanimate object could be. This multi-tasker is the perfect infant bassinet for babies up to 15 pounds, with a removable pad for extra comfort and a safe space to play. Mesh walls offer visibility, so you can keep an eye out and breathability for when you're chilling with your babe in the yard. Light enough to tote around wherever, so your baby is happy and safe while you finally get some time to yourself to relax or at least, shower.

Indoor/Outdoor & Travel Friendly

Made in the shade: The attachable protective sunshade uses UPF 50+ fabric to keep baby shaded while outdoors (Adorbs baby sunglasses not included, but highly recommended for photo ops). The shade factor is huge since sunscreen on an infant is no bueno. Going somewhere? Make it stress-free! The My Play Baby folds up super small and has a carry bag—it can fit in checked luggage, unlike all those shoes you're trying to bring.

Safety

Regalo has been keeping kids safe for years as a trusted family-owned company known for its top-rated baby safety products. When we heard they were developing this portable bassinet, we knew it would have safety at the forefront. The My Play Baby includes a removable, softly padded bottom for protection from hard surfaces, reinforced stitching along the edges for added security, a safety-lock feature and meets all safety standards, going above and beyond with ASTM certification.

Sensory

Just when you thought it couldn't get any better, it does: The My Play Baby comes with sensory toys! Colorful and playful, these useful toys overhead grab your baby's attention and encourage eye tracking. Included are a moon, heart and cloud that hang from the canopy...awww!

Easy To Clean

If it's not easy, we're not into it. Being a new parent is hard enough! Spit-ups, blow-outs (not the salon kind), and other baby goo is no match for My Play Baby—It's easy to wipe down! A fuss-free bed/play space is precisely what you need right now. Our only question is, "Does this come in adult size?"

We have had the opportunity to travel a lot while we were living in China. We were so lucky to be so close to so many great places to visit. (Gotta love those frequent flyer miles!)   When we had Samantha we knew that we still wanted to travel. I am a big believer that babies can be adapted to your lifest‌yle if they are trained accordingly. (Unless you have a Satan baby, in that case, good luck.)

Our first trip with Samantha was taken when she was about 2 months old. We went to the Avatar mountains in China which was about a 2 1/2 hour plane ride there and back.

That first trip was a trial run and Samantha did great. That encouraged us to keep traveling, and since then Samantha has been to 11 different countries. People ask me how we travel with a baby and I have compiled a list of tips and tricks that we have picked up along the way.

The Obvious

1. Make sure your baby is sucking on take-off and landing to help their little ears pop. We usually hold off on the bottle until we are taking off. Pacifiers work well, also. Another tip regarding this is if you are using a bottle, make sure to use a smaller nipple than usual so that the sucking takes longer.

2. Things to remember to pack- If you are traveling internationally you will want to make sure to include formula, diapers, wipes, and baby soap. When we went to a very rural part of Bali I am so glad we had been prepared because I never saw any baby products. If you are traveling within the United States you can save on carry-on luggage space by buying diapers and such when you arrive at your destination.

3. What to make sure your diaper bag includes- an extra pair of clothes (I am sure you know this already, you master Mother, you!) I always bring a binkie- and an extra. Formula to last you your plane ride and PLUS some. You never know if you will be stuck in a terminal or your plane will be delayed. Make sure you are stocked with milk for your little, in case a change of plan occurs. Toys, toys and toys. Although, this last trip Samantha wanted anything other than a baby toy. We ended up relenting and letting her chew on the barf bag for a few minutes. (Proud Mommy moment, right there!) I also always make sure to include a blanket. Planes are so stinking cold these days!

The not so Obvious

1. Kids under age two fly free domestic, but flying internationally it is 10% of the adult fare. This is even if your baby is going to be a lap child.

2. Did you know there could be an option to get a baby bassinet when flying internationally? Check your airlines website for rules and regulations regarding flying with an infant. We always call the airline after booking the ticket and tell them we want the seat with the bassinet. If you need a bassinet check seatguru.com to validate that they have this option.

3. When you arrive, do you want the stroller at the gate or at the baggage claim? It is always good to have it at the gate so you do not have to carry them longer than necessary. Talk to them about this right when you check in at the desk. They will give you further information on who to give your stroller to.

4. When we check in for our flights we always ask if there is an empty seat next to us available. We have really lucked out on a number of our flights and have been able to bring the car seat onto the plane with us so that we didn’t have to hold her. I believe it is up to the cabin crew to decide if they let you do this, so try and butter them up when you are asking.

5. If you are traveling internationally and use bottles you may want to bring liquid dish soap and a bottle brush to make cleaning them easier. I usually use a small Madela newborn bottle and put some soap into it. (Don’t forget to use the saran wrap under the lid to prevent leakage!) Double bag them in Ziploc bags with your bottle brush for easy access. You can also use travel toiletry bottles for your soap.

6. My friend introduced me into packing laundry detergent to hand wash things while at the hotel. (liquid works best, obviously). I know it may sound a little ghetto but it may save you from packing a million things! Being able to pack light and wash your baby clothes/bibs/blankets in a hotel tub/sink is the way to go! Especially if you are using those airlines who charge you a ton of money for each checked bag.

The Perks

Get me to the front of the line, sucka! Most places will accommodate travelers with infants. We usually get to go through immigration first.  You also get to board the plane first along with the fancy first class fliers. This allows you to set up your nursery for the next few hours and to put your carry-on in a bin close to you.

The biggest tip I can give you on traveling with an infant is to be prepared and don’t hesitate to ask for help. People are truly willing to give you assistance if you just state your problem.

I am not going to lie to you. Traveling with an infant isn’t always easy. It takes preparation, determination and patience. But, it is so worth it! I know Samantha won’t remember these trips, but we will have some great photos to show her when she grows up.

Hi, i'm Cat! We live in Orlando, Florida where my husband works for Mickey Mouse (no, really). We have two kids, Samantha (5) & Preston (2). I suffer from a chronic illness called Short Bowel Syndrome. My ramblings are dedicated to travel adventures, nap time confessions and my medical journey. Cheers!

Many expectant moms are familiar with the comparisons between fruits and veggies to the size of their growing baby. One mom chronicled her pregnancy in the most fan girl way she could think of. Grace Navarro, a content creator from Orlando, Florida, decided to keep track of her growing bump with weekly photo updates inspired by some of her favorite fandoms: Harry Potter, Disney, and The Office.

Navarro didn’t plan on creating these kinds of updates when she first found out she was pregnant. She was focused on doing a massive Harry Potter pregnancy announcement that had been in the works for years.

While she was working on the video, one of the pregnancy apps she downloaded told her that at 14 weeks, her baby would be the size of a beet. She enlisted her husband Brennan Horine’s photography skills and dressed up as Dwight Schrute, from one of her favorite shows, The Office, since her baby was about the size of a beet from Schrute Farms.

Navarro said, “I thought it would be fun to put together a Dwight progress picture as a one time thing.” She did not expect the reaction she received, and since people loved it so much, she decided to commit to posting a new fandom based pregnancy update each week.

Over the course of her pregnancy, Navarro spent hours brainstorming and trying to come up with costumes for each week. Navarro, had a lot of the supplies on hand, so she was able to cut back on costs, but she found it challenging to continue with the project for so many weeks. She said, “There were times I almost quit, especially when I got sick, but in the end I’m glad I kept on going until the end.”

Week 21! 🧡 . . A very wise snowman once said some people are worth melting for, and that couldn’t be more true in this Florida summer heat. 😂 Baby Horine is now the size (in length) of a carrot, or about 10.5 inches, and almost weighs a whole pound! S/he can now blink, and the eyelashes and eyebrows are formed. I wonder if s/he will have blue eyes like Brennan or hazel like mine? Kind of hoping for blue like daddy! 🤞🏻 . . I’m still feeling well, although my lower back is starting to suffer a bit. I decided to deep clean the interior of my car the other day and I couldn’t move for a day 😬 I’m craving all sweets, but if you know me, then you’ll know I always crave sweets hahah pregnant or not! . . I know Olaf can’t wait for summer, but we can’t wait for the end of Fall so we can meet our little babe! 19 weeks to go!! 😊

Looking through the photos, you can appreciate the amount of time and planning that went into creating the shots. Navarro had more than one shoot inspired by The Office. At week 30, she dressed as Jim Halpert holding a stapler encased in Jell-O.

Question: What baby is best? Fact: Baby Horine. . . Hello 30 weeks!! 3/4 of the pregnancy down, we enter the final stretch! #BabyHorine has packed around 3lbs of weight and is measuring roughly around 15.7 in (40 cm). S/he is the size of the infamous stapler in jello that Jim pranks Dwight with, and just as wiggly as the jello, because s/he likes to move around my belly nonstop (except when someone is trying to feel him/her lol forget it then.) . . I’m feeling “ok” most of the time, although some new fun pregnancy side effects have shown up that I won’t mention here, but they are definitely making things difficult for me at times! I’m starting to feel the weight of carrying this little one, but we are pushing through and trying to enjoy these final weeks! 😊 . . We are getting so excited to meet our baby, and spend our days day dreaming what it will be like to have you here. Meet you so soon!! ❤️

She dabbled in Disney themed shoots, dressing as Rapunzel holding her frying pan.

27 weeks!💜 . . Hello 3rd Trimester! How did we even get here so fast??😱 it’s kind of scary how quickly December is approaching, especially since there’s still so much to do. #babyhorine is now around 14.4 inches long (36.5 cm), or also the size of Rapunzel’s frying pan! I wonder if this little one will be as feisty and adventurous as her? . . Not much to report for me, lots of changes going on in my body but I think I’m handling most well! We had a doctor’s appointment today and the baby’s heartbeat was strong as usual. So thankful for a healthy baby! Tomorrow I have my glucose test, please think special thoughts of me because if I fail it... well, let’s not say what will happen if they take away my chocolate 😂 . . This week s/he got to kick off the Fall season with his/her first outing to Mickey’s not so scary Halloween Party, and I’m already trying to come up with # a costume for next year’s! Any suggestions???

Harry Potter also played a part in her pregnancy diary, when she dressed Luna Lovegood reading a copy of The Quibbler.

View this post on Instagram

• Week 36 • . . Baby Horine is growing like a weed and measuring around 18.7 in (47.5 cm) which is about the size of one of the best Wizarding newspapers, the Quibbler. We had our last ultrasound today and found out s/he weights around 5lbs and 14oz!! Almost to his/her birth weight! Everything looked great with him/her and we were told s/he has a lot of hair! . . And now, onto the not so great. 😓 We found out that the baby hadn’t turned after all (or if s/he had, that it flipped back), and we once again have a breech baby. I know that the baby could still turn, but at this point, the chances are small so we are scheduling a c-section (and will recheck position before starting the procedure). I’m not gonna lie, it’s been a rough morning emotionally. Letting go of what I thought the birth of my baby would be like and accepting this new major surgery reality has been hard. I know in a few days I’ll have more clarity and that all that matters is that our baby is delivered healthy, but I guess today I just need to take the day to “grieve”. Other than that, I’ve been feeling good physically the last couple days (aside from the usual minor pains and being uncomfortable), so I am thankful that I’m feeling good and healthy after the month I’ve had. . . If you’ve had a (positive) c-section, I’d love to hear about your experiences!!!

Charlotte “Charlie” Grace Navarro Horine was born via C-section on Nov. 21, 2019 and weighed 6 pounds 10 ounces. As expected, she continues to star in her own photo shoots!

💚2 MONTHS💚 . How is this little nugget already 2 months old?? Her personality has totally blossomed this last month and it has been so fun to watch her start discovering the world around her! It has been a busy 2nd month for us with lots of doctor’s appointments. We are so happy that her hip dysplasia has improved enough to start weaning her off of brace!! We have also gone dairy free in hopes that her reflux will get better and so far we have seen some improvements! It hasn’t been the most fun for me to change my diet but I’m finally getting the hang of it. . Charlie now weight 8lbs 13oz - she’s still so petite - and measures 22 inches. She’s finally starting to outgrow her newborn clothes and has been able to start wearing some of her 0-3 months clothes. . Things she loves: - Her daddy! She’s a daddy’s girl and gets so excited when he gets home from work. 😊 - TV - this girl LOVES her some Disney + and chill 😂 she is always mesmerized by whatever is on TV and can sit there forever just watching (she’s definitely her father’s daughter). - long car/stroller rides. - naps in people’s arms! She’s a good sleeper at night in her bassinet, but during the day she just LOVES being held. - holding on to things - fingers, clothes, hair.. you name it, she always finds something to hold! . . Things she hates: - getting dressed - how dare we put on clothes on her! 😂 - when you sit down while rocking her to sleep - you better not dare to sit when she’s still falling asleep.. all rocking must happen while standing! - being put into her car seat - as much as she loves being in it once it’s moving, when she first gets strapped in she gets SO mad. - being put in her bassinet for nap time! . . We love our little happy mandrake SO much!!! Swipe to see the cutest/funniest faces from our sweet girl! 💕😊

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently announced the recall of nearly 3,000 DaVinci Bailey bassinets due to fall and entrapment hazards. The bassinet’s mattress support can become disengaged, posing fall and entrapment hazards to babies.

These bassinets were previously recalled in Dec. 2019 due to a fall hazard.

If you have this baby product, read on for important recall information.

photo: Courtesy of U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission

The current recall includes the DaVinci Bailey bassinet in gray, espresso, natural and white colors, all measuring 38 inches long by 20 inches wide and 30 inches high when fully assembled. The name DaVinci is printed on the product’s packaging, instruction manual and registration card. Each bassinet comes with its own one-inch waterproof cradle pad.

These products were sold online at Amazon.com, Buybuybaby.com, Target.com, JCPenny.com and other e-retailers from August 2018 through September 2019 and retailed for $110.

There are currently no reported injuries due to the recalled baby products. DaVinci has received 13 reports of the mattress support becoming disengaged.  The initial recall was issued after DaVinci received 19 reports of bassinet legs breaking. This poses a potential fall hazard for infants who are inside.

To see if your baby’s bassinet has been recalled, look for the model number printed on a white label attached to the bassinet’s mattress support board or on the product packaging. The affected models include (by color), gray (M0934G), espresso (M0934Q), natural (M0934N) and white (M0934W).

If you have the recalled product, stop using the bassinet immediately. Contact DaVinci at 833-932-0208 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT or email at bailey@milliondollarbaby.zendesk.com. For more information, visit DaVinci’s website here and click on “Recalls” under the Help tab.

For a stroller that’s compact and durable, but without sacrificing style points turn to the Bugaboo Bee 5. It’s a no-brainer for on-the-go city families. It’s super easy for parents to use and ultra comfortable for baby to cruise around in. Here’s what we like about it:

Nimble for caregiver
The Bugaboo Bee 5 has an incredibly lightweight yet comprehensive design. This stroller is meant for daily use as its advanced four-wheel suspension can take on any cracked sidewalks, bumpy streets, or park terrain. That means whether you’re one-handed steering through tight spaces like train cars and coffee shops or squeezing onto an escalator, the Bugaboo Bee 5 does it with ease.

And the compact chassis makes it extremely easy to fold and store just about anywhere. Everything can be done with a single hand, which kind of defines city living: swiping a metropass, hailing a taxi, or pushing a swing while sipping your morning latte. You always need one hand free.

Comfortable for baby
Bugaboo is practically synonymous with luxury when it comes to baby gear. It’s like flying first class for your little one because it’s just that comfy. The seat has extra padding and three different recline positions to switch up depending on what your child needs at that moment: an eye out to the world or a stroller nap. The seat is also fully reversible, so your baby can face you or face out to take in the sights and scenes.

Navigating stairs, subways, and sidewalks is never a problem, whether you’re exploring your neighborhood or traveling far from home. When baby is a newborn, use the baby bassinet and glide on over to storytime at the local library. When she grows with enough neck control to sit upright, use the child seat to chauffeur your tot to and from preschool or daycare. Don’t forget to stash everything you need in the spacious underseat basket with its own built-in pocket.

High on city style
No matter your personal style, Bugaboo has you covered. The Bee 5 is fully customizable from canopy cover to seat fabric choice. Choose from a modern black or sleek aluminum chassis. Then pair it with the blue mélange, grey mélange, black or steel blue fabric for a look that’s impeccably clean and chic. The Bee 5 has the bassinet option (for an extra cost), which we love since you can start using the Bee 5 the minute you get home from the hospital.

Prefer to use an infant car seat? Simply purchase adapters and pair them with any compatible car seat or place your tot in the provided seat with sun canopy. It’s bound to become a quintessential part of any city kid’s street style.

Despite a massive recall earlier this year, the U.S. Product Safety Commission found that retailers including T.J. Maxx, HomeGoods and Marshalls continued to sell recalled infant sleepers.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled the popular Rock n’ Play sleeper in April 2019 due to the risk of injury or death. The commission went on to recall additional inclined infant sleepers under various brand names later that month, as well as issuing a third recall on yet more sleepers in August. Unfortunately, the commission has now found that several retailers continued to sell the recalled products putting that babies at risk.

“At TJX, product safety is very important to us. We deeply regret that in some instances, recalled products were not properly removed from our sales floors despite the recall processes that we had in place,” Andrew Mastrangelo, the manager of media relations for TJX Companies, the parent company of all three brands, said in a statement. “We are taking appropriate steps to strengthen these processes moving forward. We apologize to our customers and encourage anyone who believes they may have one of these products to participate in the recall.”

In October the CPSC issued a new warning, telling parents to stop using all inclined sleepers, regardless of the brand or whether a specific recall had been issued. Based on the results of a study the agency now recommends that parents to avoid using any sleepers that allow babies to sleep at an angle greater than 10 degrees.

“The agency continues to emphasize that the best place for a baby to sleep is on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet or play yard,” the CPSC stated in the warning. “Parents and caregivers should never add blankets, pillows or other items to an infant’s sleeping environment. Babies should always be placed to sleep on their backs.”
