We all know that the secret menu at Starbucks isn’t exactly a secret. There is even a hashtag dedicated to these sweet caffeinated (or decaffeinated) beverages. While each of these menu items may have a fan base that knows precisely what goes into each drink, unfortunately the baristas do not have a printed recipe guide at their disposal. If you plan on ordering off of the secret menu, be prepared to know, pump by pump, how to create your order.

Baby Yoda Frappuccino

If you are looking for the perfect drink while binge watching The Mandalorian, start by ordering a matcha green tea Frappuccino. Then, add a caramel drizzle to the cup (representing Yoda’s cloak). Finally, top it off with whipped cream, caramel and caramel ribbon crunchies.

It Frappiccino

Not all Starbucks baristas may be familiar with the It Frappuccino. To create this drink, order a vanilla bean Frappuccino topped with strawberry pureé.

Don’t worry, you’re not late to the ball. The Cinderella Latte has been around for awhile, but it became popular again in 2019. Order a Pumpkin Spice Latte. Substitute half of the pumpkin spice pumps with white mocha.

Chewbacca Frappuccino

You don’t need to know how to speak Wookie to get this delicious chocolatey frappuccino. Ask the barista for a Mocha Cookie Crumble Frappuccino. Have them add caramel drizzle in the cup (to resemble Chewbacca’s belt.) Top the drink with whipped cream and sprinkle with extra cookie crumbles.

Nightmare Before Christmas Frappuccinos

To order a drink worthy of the Pumpkin King, ask for a Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino with a shot of Chai Syrup and a shot of espresso. Ask for a mocha drizzle in the cup and have it topped with whipped cream and java chips.

Not to be outdone by Jack Skellington, Sally also has her own signature drink. To order this strawberry-infused treat, ask for a Vanilla Bean Frappuccino with Matcha Powder. Add a caramel syrup drizzle in the cup and top it with whipped cream, strawberry puree and strawberry inclusions (slices of freeze-dried strawberries).

Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge
Birds to watch, snails to hunt, forests to hike… this wildlife refuge is a hidden gem in the busy city. Rescued from landfill status in the 1960’s, the 140+ acres include ponds, a wide variety of birds, native plant life and more. The easy 3 mile hike loop around the pond is a great way to take in viewpoints like the giant mural on the side of the Portland Memorial Mausoleum. Kids might enjoy the smaller Tadpole Pole, a short interpretive loop where they can spot frogs and salamanders.

Best Things to Do in Montavilla Portland

Explore: The Pearl District

Local. Check. Sustainable. Check. Small batch. Check. Totally Awesome. Check. High fructose neon brights? Uh, no thanks….Not at Quin, a new candy shop designed for discerning Portland kids and parents.

What You’ll Love
Well, for starters, it’s a candy store, so what’s not to love? From caramels to gumdrops to lollipops, everything is totally amazing. The sweets run the gamut from haute flavors like Smith Tea Smoked Chai, Jacobsen Sea Salt and Smoked Cola to kid faves like popcorn, every kind of fruit under the sun and good ol’ caramel.

You will swoon over the white chocolate/dark chocolate tootsie roll style “Swirly Twizzlie Rolls” and not just because that’s fun to say!

Candy is Dandy
Besides the hand-made candy, Quin stocks a selection of American craft chocolates and candy-themed books, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Naturally Sweet
Blackberry puree in our blackberry gumdrops? Yes, please! Whenever possible, Quin sources local, fresh ingredients. The ingredient list for the Dreams Come Chew fruit chews looks something like this: sugar, glucose, butter, citric acid, natural flavors.

Queen of Candy
Owner and Chief Candy Maker Jami Curl knows a thing or two about her sweets. She is the owner of the delish cupcakery Saint Cupcake. After offering caramels and other sweets in Saint Cupcake she decided to expand to her own candy store and we have to admit that we’re happy she did.

And it happened in a sugar rush: from the time she became aware of the lovely, airy space to opening day? Six weeks! How did she do it? Well, she’s a mom, after all. In fact she assures us that every item at Quin is “Theo approved,” referring to her six year old son.

Candy Land
Find Quin at 1022 West Burnside, 97205. They are open Monday through Saturday from noon to 6:00pm, closed on Sundays. Find them online at quincandy.com. Also, Quin uses Square, so leave your cash-ola at home. Again, totally Portland!!

Hot Tip: Quin is located right across the street from Powell’s City of Books which has Kids’ Story Time every Wednesday during the summer at 3:00pm. Now that’s sweet!

Christmas isn’t the only holiday that deserves a countdown calendar. For those celebrating Hanukkah (or for non-jewish families looking for a fun craft to learn about a different culture), we stumbled across this awesome, and oh-so-easy Hanukkah countdown calendar, courtesy of Mamaleh.

The crafty Mamaleh got inspired to create this Hanukkah calendar after her three year old son became enamored with his Halloween countdown calendar. If Halloween and Christmas could have a calendar, why not Hanukkah? Instead of counting the actual days of Hanukkah, this calendar counts down the 18 (chai) days of Hanukkah, as well as the actual Hanukkah holiday itself.

Mamaleh gives instructions on how to assemble the calendar, as well as a downloadable PDF you can print out yourself.

Let us know in the comment section below how your Hanukkah countdown calendar turns out.

Made by Mamaleh is where the crafty and the Jewish combine to give you fresh, chic, creative ideas from a Jewish perspective.  Mamaleh is creating a modern Jewish home one project at a time by sharing crafts, recipes, shopping finds, kid activities, you name it.
