Tucked between Santa Monica, Venice and Culver city is Mar Vista — a vibrant residential neighborhood on the Westside that has a life all its own. While most of the action is located a few short blocks on Venice Blvd. between Centinela and Inglewood, you’ll find there is loads to do. Whether you want a chill outdoor day at the famers market followed by the playground or you’re ready to hit the bowling lanes and grab a great lunch, we’re positive you’ll fall in love with this sea-view hood like we have.

Santa Monica Airport
If you have a future pilot on your hands, the Santa Monica airport is a must-stop. This is where you can learn the importance of air navigation to the city of Angels. The airport was originally named Clover Field (recognize that 10 Freeway exit?) and was home to the Douglas Aircraft Company.

The first aerial circumnavigation of the Earth was accomplished by the Army in a custom Douglas World Cruiser, which took off from Clover Field on St. Patrick’s Day in 1924. Jump to 2018 and you can sit on the observation deck (open Mon. through Fri. from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m.) and watch planes land, take off and hear the roar of the engines all while getting some great photos. Want even more history? Visit the Museum of Flying located right next door where you can check out vintage planes and learn about the great California History in Aviation. The museum is open Fri. through Sun. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This national chain is known for making a trip to the lanes even livelier and their first Southern California outpost in Mar Vista is no exception. Be prepared for black-lit lanes, pumping music, a full arcade and food (plus a full bar) that blows your traditional bowling alley fare out of the water. From avocado hummus and salads to gourmet burgers everyone will be fed and happy even if they strike out.

Note: Anyone under 21 must be accompanied by an adult at all times and littles under 15 are not permitted on Fri. and Sat. after 9 p.m. Never fear, you’ll all be wiped out by then anyway.

Every day there are dozens of things our Red Tricycle team is thankful for. In honor of Thanksgiving and in an effort to appreciate those special people, places and products (ah-hem, coffee) that make our world go round, we asked our staff what exactly they’re thankful for this year. Read on and then let us know in the comments below what you’re grateful for.

I am thankful for a husband who “leans in” to co-parenting. I’m thankful for the Red Tricycle team who inspire me daily and make life more fun. I’m thankful for Mario’s Dry Cleaning and Laundry, who’ve been fulfilling our laundry on demand needs long before there was an app for that.
— Jacqui Boland, Founder + CEO

I’m thankful for my two boys who can buckle themselves into the car, make their own cereal on Saturday mornings and who always make me smile.
— Kristina Moy, Seattle Editor

I am truly, truly blessed that the Y, Trader Joe’s and the wine store are all within 1 block of each other, and a few blocks from my apartment. (And yeah, my family.)
— Mimi O’Connor, NY Editor

I’m thankful for the inventors of Mac and cheese, the one and only food I can guarantee my two year olds will eat. (and thankful for my food processor to grind up vegetables into the mac and cheese, the only way i can trick them into eating anything healthy)
— Caitlin Dowling, NY Calendar Editor

I am thankful my daughter is not an Early Bird and will sleep in. Clearly I did something right in life!
— Leah Singer, San Diego Editor

I’m thankful for baby giggles, hugs from my 3 year old, early bedtimes, playdates with wine, childcare at the gym, an awesome husband and great friends and family.
— Julie Seguss, Bump + Baby Editor

I’m grateful that my kids are now sleeping through the night.  Every night!!  And it only took 8 years…
— Meghan Rose, Los Angeles Editor

I’m thankful for coffee, wine, and the chaos that comes in between.
— Shelley Massey, Atlanta Editor

Wow! I’m thankful for so many things this season. Here are just a few:
• The sleep pillow app. This has aided in the success of countless afternoon naps. Enough said.
• Gel manicures. No matter how many bottles and lunch bags I clean out, these things can go a solid two weeks without chipping.
• Audiobooks. Just when I thought I’d have to forego my monthly book club meetings after baby #2 hit the scene…audiobooks saved the day.
— Ayren Jackson-Cannady, D.C. Editor

As a working mom of two creative and messy kiddos, I’m incredibly grateful for coffee, a helpful hubby, early morning yoga and Method’s All-Purpose Cleaning Spray in Pink Grapefruit (this stuff can be used anywhere, on just about anything).
— Gabby Cullen, National Editor

I am thankful for my four (going on 80) year-old son who loves to wear blazers, dips his bread in oil & balsamic and uses phrases like, “Mom, I’m sorry to tell you this but…” and “Just so you know….” Every day he surprises me and makes me grateful I get to be his mom.
— Amber Guetebier, Bay Area Calendar Editor + Red Tricycle Daily Editor

I’m so thankful for our amazing family–grandparents, aunts, uncles and godparents who are all here, healthy and so much fun.
— Erin Feher, Bay Area Editor

Free rent at my grandma’s. Wouldn’t survive in SF without it.
— Christal Yuen, Editorial Associate + Photo Editor

I am thankful to be able to spend time with my family over the holidays and for my husband’s culinary prowess (which comes in extra handy during the holidays.) I am also thankful for fairies and construction trucks, as they keep my children constantly amused and entertained.
— Mandy Hale, VP Operations

I’m thankful for friends. Especially the one where Joey buys Chandler a duck.
— Kevin Cabral, Web Producer

I’m thankful to be celebrating an epic 10th annual Friendsgiving this year (I have not been home for Thanksgiving in ten years..and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!) …And on a related note, Im thankful to have always been home for Christmas with my family.
— Brandi McWade, Digital Media Manager

I’m thankful for my health, my two boys at home (the big and the small) and that the difficult, nausea-inducing, little girl commandeering my uterus will be out and about very, very soon.
— Jess Pluskowski, VP of Brand Partnerships

I am thankful that my one-year-old mostly sleeps through the night. :)
— Jen Caynan, Sales Director

I’m thankful for cloud-based, instance-specific, indexed server exception reporting and analysis with full stack traces.
— Dan Zaner, VP Engineering

I am thankful for coffee, because its what keeps me awake during work  and it also tastes great.
— Tina Ly, Ad Operations Manager

I’m thankful for my spunky daughter who loves to cuddle, and the technology that makes my life so much easier: Munchery, TouchID, and Siri’s ability to set timed reminders (because otherwise I’d forget everything!).
— Sara Olsher, Marketing + Community

Mickey Mouse. And pacifiers. But, on a serious side I am also thankful for the amazing community of strong women that I have been blessed with during a difficult period in my life. In this last year alone I have seen working moms, stay-at-home moms, single women and even young girls come together and offer support and helping hands. I admire these women that empower one another and take charge in making a difference. It is the very woman that I aspire to be for my children and that I hope to exude confidently each and every day.
— Jen Miller, Billing Specialist

OK  so the serious first:  I am so grateful for my health. Parenting is physical – let’s face it and I’m so glad that I am up for the task, which lets me get so much joy from being a mom. On the lighter side… As a mom, I am so grateful that there is wine to offset all the “whine” in my life with young kids.  Nothing like a glass or 2 or 3 at the end of a long day. I am also grateful for warm snuggles in the morning, run into my arms hugs when they get home from school and for all of the delightful innocent words that come out of their mouths.
— Francie Kaplan, National Account Director

I am grateful for a partner who is patient and kind, a dog whose exuberant greetings always make me happy and coffee. Lots of coffee.
— Erin Lem, Editorial Director

Now tell us what you’re thankful for! We’d love to hear in the comments below.

Do you remember watching Dirty Dancing and wishing you could spend the week at a fun resort where there was always something to do? We found a perfect solution that doesn’t require a cross-country trip. The Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort & Spa in Dana Point is the perfect getaway for a the family without spending money traveling by plane or endless hours in the car. Located approximately 40 minutes north of San Diego and south of Los Angeles, the resort has everything you need for a relaxing weekend or weekday getaway. Kids will love the activities, which makes parents happy and relaxed.

What to Do at Laguna Cliffs Resort
There’s so much to do at Laguna Cliffs Resort that it’s almost tough to know where to start. The property is located next to Lantern Bay Park, which features pathways for biking, walking and jogging. Don’t worry about bringing bikes; Laguna Cliffs has bikes available to use. There’s also morning yoga in the park (and yes, the Resort has yoga mats available too). You can play table tennis, frisbee, kite flying, tennis and bocce ball (with courts right on site).

If you’re looking to go beyond the resort, all you need to do is travel the 118 steps from the property to Dana Point Harbor and explore the area including the Seaport Mariner’s Village and Shops, the famous Ocean Institute and whale watching adventures.

Family-Friendly Fun
While the Laguna Cliffs has so much family fun available, the pools and kids splash pad really make it something special. The resort has two pools: the Laguna Pool features quiet and serene surroundings for adults, and the Del Mar Pool for the entire family. Kids go crazy for the Splash Pad, which features water play fountains, surfboards and water cannon, a one-foot kiddie pool and room to run around on the expansive Del Mar Lawn.

The Del Mar pool has plenty of lounge chairs, umbrellas, oversized papasan chairs, and kid-friendly poolside dining is available. We love that the Splash Pad is right next to the Del Mar Pool, which means parents can relax while the kiddos can play to their heart’s content.

One of the highlights of the summer (Memorial Day to Labor Day) is the Laguna Kahuna Movie Night on Saturday evenings. Kids and parents are invited to show up in pajamas and with pillows to watch one of the kid-friendly movies. Some of this year’s features are Frozen, Despicable Me, Toy Story and more. There’s also an old fashioned popcorn machine, drinks and chocolate treats. All of this is complimentary for hotel guests.

Kahuna Laguna Kids Club
One of the hallmarks of the resort is the Kahuna Laguna Kids Club. This fun-filled program for kiddos ages 5 – 12 runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Kids participate in supervised arts and crafts, games, outdoor activities, poolside fun in the Splash Zone, treasure hunts, and more. When they check in at the Kids Club, little guests receive a Kahuna Laguna Passport, which they can take to different hotel spots throughout their stay. When the passport is full, they bring it to the front desk and pick a prize from the treasure box.

Each day features a different theme. There’s Pirate Adventures, Wild West Wednesdays, Surfin’ Safari, Make Believe Monday, just to name a few. Kids can attend Kahuna Laguna Kids Club for the full day (9 a.m. – 4 p.m.) for $70, morning half day (9 a.m. – 1 p.m.) or afternoon half day (12 – 4 p.m.) for $45 each. Lunch and snacks are provided in each session.

One of the great things about the Kahuna Laguna Kids Club is it gives parents some alone time and a chance to unwind without leaving the property. We suggest checking out the Spa at Laguna Cliffs for a massage, a workout at the gym, or spend some quiet time in the sauna and the Spa’s relaxing room and patio.

Good to Know

  • Laguna Cliffs has different room rates and pricing options to meet your needs as a family. Check out their website for specials or talk with a hotel representative for suggestions.
  • During the summer, VUE restaurant at Laguna Cliffs has a family-friendly buffet dinner. Kids can chose from items like chicken tenders, mac and cheese, summer corn on the cob and a chocolate fountain. What picky eater can complain about that? For breakfast, we suggest the Kahuna Laguna Breakfast with scrambled eggs and chocolate chip pancakes.
  • Speaking of eating, if you’re dining at VUE, see if your kiddos can spot the bunnies running outside the restaurant on the lawn. It will keep the little ones occupied!
  • Another fun option is Movies at the Park in Lantern Bay Park, right next to Laguna Cliffs. Every Friday during the summer, the city of Dana Point hosts a complimentary movie night.
  • Laguna Cliffs gets quite busy during the summer, so make sure to book your reservation sooner rather than later.
