By now, chances are you’ve seen, heard and read all about the new fave character from Disney+’s The Mandalorian. The Child, a.k.a. baby Yoda, is popping up just about everywhere—including Pittsburgh’s UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital!

The hospital recently celebrated the holiday in a very Star Wars way. UPMC Magee nurse Caitlin Pechin crocheted adorable Santa hats, complete with out of this world Yoda-like green ears.

According to Pechin, it took about an hour-and-a-half to crochet each teeny tiny hat. This isn’t the first time the nurse has created completely cute outfits for the newborns she cares for. Along with the Santa-Yoda hats,  Pechin has also made pickle swaddles, Mr. Rogers sweaters, hockey skates and red, white and blue hats for the Olympics.

So how did this sweet Star Wars holiday event come to be? According to Patty Genday, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care Services, this isn’t the first time hospital staff has celebrated the newborns and the holidays.

Genday said in a press interview, “This holiday tradition probably began decades ago when we dressed our babies in stockings. We have such a wonderful, creative staff here that it has just transitioned to many different celebrations.” She continued, “I think our Magee babies, with what you’ll see this year, are really the force of our future.”

This Newborn Takes Mean-Mugging to the Next Level

What’s cuter than a newborn? Apparently, one dressed up as a pickle!

The UPMC Magee-Womens Hospitall dressed up babies as pickles in honor of the annual Pittsburgh Pickle Festival, known as Picklesburgh, by dressing the hospital’s newborns up in pickle-themed outfits, and they are even more adorable than you imagined.

Each little dill pickle was outfitted with hand-knitted green hats and blankets complete with pickley bumps. They each donned a onesie reading “Special Dill-ivery.”

During the ceremony to reveal the young gherkins, a city spokesman described the Picklesburgh festival as “built for every pregnant woman’s craving” and predicted that the first pickle babies could be mayors of Picklesburgh some day. This is the fourth year of the festival and clearly the residents of Pittsburgh think it’s a pretty big dill.

In LA, a few things are hard to find. Waiters who don’t want to be actors. Actors who don’t want to be directors. And incredibly tasty southern fried chicken. That is, until now. Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken recently opened its first West Coast location in the heart of Koreatown and is poised to become your family’s new go-to spot for all things crispy and delicious. Picnics, birthday parties and “just because you don’t feel like cooking nights” are now taken care of with the very best fried chicken in town.

What Sets Gus’s Apart
With various upscale restaurants now hosting popular fried chicken nights around the city, this dependable comfort dish has become quite trendy. But to really set yourself apart on the clucker scene, you have to showcase a totally unique taste that blows other fried chicken joints out of the water. On that front, Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken delivers and then some. Known for a confounding combination of perfectly crispy skin, wonderfully juicy and tender meat, and a mouthwatering blend of spices that offer a kick in the pants, Gus’s may just be the best chicken in town.

Back in 1984, Gus and Getrude Bonner opened the original Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken in Mason, Tennessee. It quickly gained tons of press and a following so loyal, people would literally fly across the country for a plate of Gus’s special chicken. Working hard to protect is his family’s top-secret recipe, Gus would often tell people, “This is a dead man’s recipe and I ain’t telling.” Gus’s now has 15 locations around the country, including the newest one here in our own backyard.  And now even native Angeleno kids can taste real fried chicken without hopping on a plane.

Vibrant Scene & Friendly Service
Located in a bustling section of Koreatown, parking at Gus’s can be a challenge, but drive around a bit and you’ll eventually snag a place on the street. If you’re picking up to-go orders, there is limited parking available in the lot behind the restaurant. The Pico and Crenshaw location has a cheery, sun-filled dining room with a fun, sports bar vibe. Giant flat screen TVs hang on every wall, keeping diners abreast of all the latest Dodgers, Lakers, Kings (and now Rams!) scores. There are plenty of tables to choose from, many of which will comfortably fit larger families. We can tell you this spot is crazy popular already and highly recommend arriving before 7 p.m., especially on weekends, unless you don’t mind a wait.

Southern hospitality is in full swing here with uber friendly service and a knowledgeable and attentive managerial staff and wait staff who are more than happy to make menu recommendations if all those tasty options are too overwhelming to choose from.

What to Order For Your Little Chicks
Clearly fried chicken is the star at Gus’s. However, diners also love the fried green tomato, fried pickle and fried okra appetizers (far and away the best in town, maybe the best ever), as well as the many yumtastic side dishes. For example, Gus’s ooey-gooey mac & cheese will melt in your mouth from the very first bite, and the baked beans are out of this world. Families might also notice a slight sweetness to some sides, like the coleslaw. Gus purposely added a little sweetness to many of the sides to help wonderfully balance out the slight spiciness of their fried chicken. To wash it all down, be sure to try the sweetest tea we’ve found west of the Mississippi.

photo: Jennifer O’Brien

Gus’s also features a great kids’ menu which includes delish items like grilled cheese, wings and chicken tenders that are slightly less spicy than their main entree counterparts. Kiddos will no doubt devour one (or two) helpings of mac & cheese as well, finished off with a souvenir cup of ice-cold lemonade.

If you have any room left for dessert, we’d be shocked! But if you do, you’ll definitely want to try an old fashioned IBC Root Beer float or a slice of Gus’s incredible chocolate chess pie or sweet potato pie. This is true southern cooking through and through.

Hours: Sunday–Thursday, 11 a.m.–9 p.m. and Friday & Saturday, 11 a.m.–10 p.m.

Portland is already home to the Trail Blazers and Timbers. And, up until recently there was no baseball in sight. That all changed when the Portland Pickles made their debut in Lents Park this past June. That’s right–America’s Pastime is back in Portland and you’re invited! Read on for our guide to a day at the ballpark for the Pickles’ inaugural season and why you shouldn’t wait to snag a ticket.

About The Pickles
Baseball fans have been hoping for a return to the city since the Portland Beavers left what was then Civic Stadium. A few years ago, the Hillsboro Hops started playing (go Hops!), but there were no opportunities to catch a ballgame in Portland proper, until now. The Portland Pickles are part of the Great West League, which gives college baseball players a chance to develop over the summer while providing entertainment for communities.

Walker Stadium
Home games are played at Walker Stadium in Lents Park, south of Holgate on 92nd. Early birds might get lucky with a spot in the limited parked onsite, but you might catch your breath every time a foul ball goes into the (tree-lined, thankfully) lot. There’s more parking in the surrounding neighborhoods, though be aware that I-205 cuts just to the east. Or, take the MAX green line to the Holgate Station, and don’t worry about parking.

Tickets & Seating
Everyone three & up needs a ticket. You’ll only find an “adult” option online. Field Box tickets are $12, Pavilion tickets are $8 and Grass Berm tickets are $6 each. The field boxes and pavilion are behind home plate for the best view of the action; the field box bleachers are closest, and pavilion are in the bleachers behind. The grass berm is just it sounds like—a grassy hill along the third base line in the outfield. Sunday games start at 5:05 p.m., and other games start at 7:05 p.m. And, for those who haven’t been to the park in awhile: a baseball game is usually around three hours long.

For the best view of home plate, grab a seat in the bleachers. To relax and enjoy a laid back evening at the ballpark, or if your kids are little enough that you’d be worried about bleacher seating, try the berm. For hot summer afternoons, be aware that the park isn’t shaded. By 6 p.m. in mid-June, about half of the berm was shaded. By 7 p.m., most of the berm was shaded, but the bleachers stayed in the sun.

Know before you go: you’ll be using port-a-potties for your facilities so bring along hand sanitizer and extra wipes.

What can I bring?
Blankets, chairs and shade umbrellas are all good to go. Feel free to make yourselves comfortable on the grass berm. Common courtesy prevailed on our visit, with chairs on the top and bottom of the berm, and blankets on the slope. No outside food is allowed, or outside alcohol, but water bottles are fine.

The Food
There might not be peanuts or Cracker Jack for sale, but there’s other typical ballpark food for sale: hot dogs, burgers, pizza and soft pretzels, to start. This being the Pickles, you can also buy a honking pickle on a stick, or a deep-fried pickle if you dare. On nights when “kids eat free,” you’ll get a ticket that’s good for a free hot dog. Mom and dad will find a surprising number of microbrews to choose from, but you’ll have to check out several tents for the different selections.

Family Fun
On our visit, players were happy to give high-fives to little fans along the fence, and some stayed for autographs after the game. Mascot Dillon Pickle will happily take a picture with you if he’s not busy getting up to  shenanigans on the field between innings. And don’t miss the kids fun zone near first base, with a bouncy castle the night we visited. Bouncing and a baseball game for $6? That’s a bargain.

Schedule
Click here for the full schedule. We suggest getting your ticket now as the last game is coming up on August 11.
