The Catamaran Hotel’s Sunset Luaus feature amazing entertainment including hula and fire dancers that create an authentic Hawaiian feel. Kids love the rhythms of the fast-paced music and interactive entertainment. Sunset Luaus have been known to call all the kiddos onto the stage to learn the hula.

Every guest receives a lei and is treated to an all-you-can-eat buffet and a mai tai for parents. Little ones will enjoy tasty choices just for them like Hawaiian chicken and pineapple and ham pizza. Luaus are held Fridays at 6 p.m. from June 22 -Aug. 31, and Tuesdays, from July 17-Aug. 21.

Insider Tip: Stick around after the luau ends to grab a photo on the lawn with the Polynesian performers.

Eat

Ramen Parlor
San Mateo is known as a mecca for ramen lovers. There’s plenty of excellent ramen spots, but we like Ramen Parlor as its larger size makes it more accommodating to families. It’s still recommended to get there earlier to avoid the inevitable lines, but tables turn over fairly quickly. Their specialties include the lobster pork ramen topped with soft shell crab, and a spicy crab miso ramen.

The Habit Burger Grill
This outpost of the Santa Barbara burger chain will satisfy all your burger cravings. The classic Charburger is a winner, but you might be tempted to try their teriyaki burger, or the roasted Portobello mushroom burger for a vegetarian option.  Don’t miss the tempura green beans or sweet potato fries either. The kids will undoubtedly clamor for a milkshake or sundae.

Mendocino Farms
This newly opened “sandwich market” offers modern takes on classic lunch fare, as well as a whole lot more. Along with club sandwiches and tuna melts, you can try a pork belly banh mi or a “not so fried” chicken sandwich, or a steak BLT on a pretzel. Among the salad offerings, the Impossible taco salad is definitely a favorite. There’s a kids corner with chalkboard walls, and an outdoor foosball table, making this an ideal family hangout.

Takahashi Market
This grocery store is a bit out of the way, but along with stocking lots of Japanese and Hawaiian goods, it serves some of the best Hawaiian food around. The tiny kitchen makes some don’t- miss dishes like loco moco, bacon spam musubi, and aloha tater tots. Seating is limited to a couple picnic tables outside, so most customers take out — drive over to Central Park on a sunny day to enjoy your lunch.

Sweet

Romolo’s Cannoli
This unique dessert shop has been run by the same family for 50 years. They specialize in cannoli, an Italian pastry composed of a crisp fried shell filled with sweet ricotta cream and other toppings. You get to pick your fillings and toppings of choice at Romolo’s. Authentically old school and completely addictive, you’ll want to try all the different flavors. They also have other traditional Italian desserts like spumoni ice cream, amaretti cookies, and tartufo.

Eggettes
Boba shops abound in San Mateo, but Eggettes offers the bonus of their namesake treat: a crispy, puffy waffle traditionally sold as a street snack. This wonderful children’s museum is a don’t-miss for any visit to the Peninsula. Perched on the edge of San Mateo with a gorgeous view of the bay, this museum has a combination of indoor science exhibits and an outdoor zoo area. Dining out with kids is always a gamble. Add in a picky eater and a long wait time for food and dining out can be a parent’s worst nightmare. But that’s all about to change when you say hello to downtown Bellevue’s new Lincoln South Food Hall. This full-service dining scene not only provides unique and delish chef-driven quick serve menu choices, but has plenty of options for even the pickiest of eaters and a family-friendly vibe we love. If you’re ready to get your grub on, scroll down for the scoop on this latest dining discovery.

Centrally Located
Located in the heart of downtown Bellevue, across the street from Bellevue Square and right below the new Cinemark Reserve movie theatre is where you will find the new Lincoln South Food Hall. Park in the Lincoln Square parking garage (parking is free with validation from the Lincoln South restaurants or shops within the Bellevue Collection) or access it from any of the covered skybridges that connect The Bellevue Collection and Bellevue Square with Lincoln Square North.

Communal Dining
The space consists of seven fast-casual eateries all under one roof—each with a totally different vibe—but all with communal seating. If you’re thinking this sounds like a food court, think again. Lincoln South Food Hall has one general manager, Reid Kendall formerly of some of Seattle’s top dining spots: mamnoon, Scout, The Nest at the Thompson Hotel and Tallulah’s and one executive chef, Daniel Laferriere formerly of Guy Savoy and Daniel Boulud’s db Brasserie and Wolfgang Puck. The entire Lincoln South Food Hall is under the direction of Bellevue-based Ascend Hospitality Group, in partnership with Jeffrey Frederick of Elite Brand Hospitality Group and Kevin Hee who is Frederick’s director of culinary development. The casual dining environment, which you could call part kitchen, part counter and part bar, offers a variety of quick bites made from high quality ingredients that are locally sourced from artisan purveyors. And sets itself apart from other communal-type dining settings by providing guests with extra amenities like linen napkins, stainless-steel trays and a friendly staff who are on hand to bring you to-go containers, clear your plates and even fill your water glasses.

There’s Something for Everyone
Whether you’re in the mood for poké or have a hankering for street tacos, ramen or burgers, Lincoln South Food Hall has you covered. Barrio Luchador, which serves its food out of an uber-cool airstream trailer, is the place to go for street tacos (the pork and pineapple and tender beef cheeks are our faves), quesadillas and chips and house-made salsas. Next door, Avo-Poké is the spot for customizable salad bowls, made with or without six different kinds of traditional Hawaiian poké, plus a wide selection of fresh juices and fruit waters. Crosta E Vino, an Italian-inspired counter, serves wood-fired pizzas, artisanal cheeses and salumi boards and has over 30 red and white wines served from specialty barrel taps. If you’re in the mood for quiche, fancy thick cut toasts, French-inspired sandwiches or ice cream or sorbet, Baguette Epicerie’s grab-and-go counter will surely delight your taste buds.

For ramen lovers, Fat & Feathers can’t be beat. This popular (like line around the corner popular) spot offers five versions of ramen spiked with everything from rick pork belly to roast duck to Japanese fried chicken along with delish bao sandwiches. For burger lovers, the Burger Brawler serves up hefty burgers made from a blend of short rib, brisket, chuck and dry-aged ribeye and topped with Italian Taleggio cheese. Their menu also includes two versions of gravy fries (with a foie grass add-on) as well as delish sandwiches, 24 beers on tap, a Guinness infusion draft beer system and a full cocktail bar. If you need a caffeine pick-me-up, Dote will definitely satisfy your caffeine fix and your sweet tooth. Along with espresso, lattes, and signature drinks, Dote offers a delightful array of handmade chocolates (made on site by celebrated Pastry Chef Ewald Notter) as well as pastries, all day breakfast items, seasonal and assorted sandwiches and even boozy coffee cocktails.

Kid-Friendly Eats
Whether you’ve got a kiddo who won’t eat meat, a child who can’t stand the sight of veggies or an adventurous eater who will try just about anything, Lincoln South Food Hall has something to satisfy every petite palate. At Barrio Luchador, the children’s menu consists of chicken or cheese quesadillas, chicken or beef tacos with shredded cheese, tortilla chips and mild salsa and sugar and cinnamon chips and Horchata for dessert. Over at Crosta E Vino, kids can choose the cheese and salami board off the kid’s menu or go with a kid-sized cheese, pepperoni or mushroom wood-fired pizza. If a burger and fries is more of your sidekick’s thing, the Burger Brawler serves kid-sized versions of their hefty hamburgers, cheeseburgers and crispy salmon burgers along with fries and vanilla or chocolate milkshakes. Got a little ramen lover in the fam? Head over to Fat & Feathers and let your kiddo order a kid-sized version of the pork belly ramen and add on a Japanese fried chicken bao to really fill her belly. And what kid couldn’t resist Nutella toast with a salted caramel banana or grilled cheese baguette at Baguette Epicerie? Top it off with a scoop (or two!) of Full Tilt ice cream and we’re pretty sure everyone in your crew will go home with full bellies.

photo: Lincoln South Food Hall

Even More Conveniences
With technology, Lincoln South Food Hall has made procuring food as easy as a click, tap or swipe away. Options include self-serve kiosks for grab-and-go items and soon, online ordering for pick-up and delivery through the Food Hall’s website and mobile app. Third-party partners such as DoorDash, Grubhub and Caviar will also be providing delivery services in the future, followed by Uber Eats and Postmates.

Good to Know
1. The space between the tables and the food counters is fairly tight, but there is stroller parking next to the Burger Brawler.

2. In the middle of the Food Hall you’ll find a self-serve water station which makes getting drinks for your kids easy-peasy.

3. Restrooms are located to the right of Baguette Epicerie. Just follow the signs down the hall.

4. Free Wi-Fi is available, just in case your sidekick must watch Dora the Explorer with her wood-fired pizza or you need to pull a little work/lunch double duty.

5. If you’re looking for a gift, stop by Dote Coffee Bar and pick up locally roasted coffee, handmade chocolates, jars of their oh-so delicious ganache (we recommend the vanilla bean white chocolate) or a bag of milk chocolate hazelnuts. You simply can’t go wrong here!

Bellevue’s New Theatre Is Going to Change the Way You Do Date Night

There is a phenomenon that is working in our favor these days. Microbreweries are popping up all over the Puget Sound region and many are catering to both pets and kids. And while many of these places serve a full menu, a number of them are strictly breweries which means they actually encourage you to bring in your own food (pass the Goldfish crackers!). If you love craft beer, but thought your days of visiting brewhouses were over, we’ve handpicked 20 spots where you can grab a pint with your pint-sized peeps.

Elliott Bay Brewing Company
If you walk in the doors of Elliott Bay Brewing Company around dinnertime, there will be no doubt in your mind that this is where beer-loving parents come to enjoy a pint – and you’ll love that Elliott Bay is pretty noisy, so they won’t be hushing your little ones through the entire meal. Ask to sit upstairs or in one of the booths along the edge of the brewery. The kids’ menu is tasty and the adult fare is a step above typical brewery grub, so come hungry. And now with three locations, it’s easier than ever to make this your new Friday night hangout!

Hale’s Ales
Tucked between the Fremont and Ballard neighborhoods, Hale’s Ales is always full of families, even during happy hour (weekdays from 3 p.m.–6 p.m.). Besides the tasty beers, we love Hale’s because they use as many local companies on their menu as possible. The brewery at Hale’s Ales also has a delicious weekend breakfast, so you can replace a pint with a hot cup of Zoka coffee! And throughout the year, they host a number of kid-friendly shows inside the Palladium. Cheers to that!

The Pike Brewing Company
Located close to the Pike Place Market, The Pike Brewing Company boasts a great menu for both kids and adults (think a healthier take on the traditional pub food fare) and of course, plenty of ales, lagers and more both on tap and in bottles. They also host live music and frequent guest beer brewers to give talks and workshops on a variety of different beer making topics. Plus, there are all kinds of cool bicycles and pieces of history decorating the walls to keep little eyes engaged. What’s there not to like about this place?

Populuxe Brewing
A popular Ballard nanobrewery, Populuxe threw its hat into the local brewery ring in March of 2013. It was launched by two home brewers who mastered the art of making award-winning stouts and IPAs before going brick-and-mortar. Operating out of an off-the-main-drag warehouse that happens to have an excellent fenced-in patio, Populuxe offers picnic tables, an all-ages corn hole court, awesome pinball and arcade games from the Seattle Pinball Museum and lots of room for kids to roam. Food trucks, like The Grilled Cheese Experience, also serve bites during business hours, so you won’t have to leave the premises to feed the fam.

Snoqualime Brewery and Taproom
Nothing pairs better with great beer than great food. And you’re sure to find plenty of both at this family-friendly brewery and restaurant in Snoqualmie, which can often be found full of families and kiddos enjoying a pint or two of delicious ale and root beer. Naked City Taphouse & Brewery
Hearing your kiddos giggle about going to a place called “Naked City” is priceless – trust us! But sadly for them, Naked City Taphouse and Brewery is not actually clothing optional (which you should probably reiterated with your literal four-year old!). Greenwood families love popping in here for dinner or weekend lunch – despite a somewhat limited kids’ menu, all of the options are very thoughtful, including many vegetarian choices. Beer-lovers will appreciate their huge list of local beers, besides those they brew themselves. And families living up north will appreciate their Camano Island location.

Stoup Brewing
We fell in love with the distinctive NW Red ale pre-parenthood, but thankfully, this Ballard brewery with a killer patio is perfectly hospitable to tiny tikes. Try one of the beergeek-approved brews, and procure a snack from the Stoup-er snack machine—a clever vending machine stocked with chips, nuts and even a few soda options—or visit for dinner to take advantage of the daily changing visiting food truck (they stay longer hours on the weekends). Find a seat near the kiddie corner and your tyke can crawl across the butcher paper while you sip.

The Redhook Brewery has moved its operations a number of times over the company’s 35 years. Today, it goes by the name of Redhook Brewlab and is now located in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. The brewery is a test ground to experiment and create new small-batch beers primarily for the pub, and to develop recipes that will eventually come to life on a wider scale in Washington and beyond. In addition to a variety of creative beers on tap, Redhook Brewlab offers a specially curated menu featuring ingredients from local Seattle purveyors. Fremont Brewing Urban Beer Garden
Fremont Brewing’s Urban Beer Garden has been described as industrial, but also intimate with its 18-foot long community tables. Though the place says that they are “kid-, dog-, cat-, ferret-, rabbit- and iguana-friendly,” parents are still encouraged to supervise their kids at all times. Open daily from 11 a.m.-9 p.m., parents will enjoy the dozen or so taps and ciders on hand while the kiddies sip on complimentary (housemade) cherry soda. Everyone can snack on the house pretzels and apples, and although food is not served here, you can bring in your own.

Optimism Brewing Company
The place you frequented the most in your 20s isn’t necessarily the kind of place that would welcome you with kids in tow. But Optimism Brewing Company—a sprawling Capitol Hill brewery inside a renovated old auto showroom—is the sort of place cool enough for the old you, but warm and welcoming to you (and your dogs and offspring) now. Optimism’s creative craft beers are characterized by tasting notes rather than names, so go for the adjectives that draw you. If you’re hungry, order delivery right to the beer hall, or pick up some grub from one of the rotating food trucks in the courtyard. Either way, enjoy yourself while your little ones are running amok in the dedicated (enclosed) play space or playing board games.

The Lazy Boy Tap Room
The Lazy Boy Tap Room is located directly inside of the brewery offering you a real beer experience. While watching the brewers in action, you can enjoy a selection of 10 different Lazy Boy beers on tap including seasonal beers and specialty beers that are only available at the Tap Room. While they don’t have a kitchen at the Taproom (they are lazy after all), they do offer snacks such as popcorn and you are welcome to bring your own food to enjoy with your beer.

McMenamins
Based in Oregon, McMenamins brewery and restaurants have already made a pretty big impression in the greater Seattle area. Each location is family-friendly, serves up delicious pub-style food and comes with a welcoming homey atmosphere. Most locations brew their beer right on the spot and offer brewery tours. However, each place is unique and has its own quirks too, so check ’em all out.

Chuck’s Hop Shop
Chuck’s Hop Shop may not be a brewery, but it makes our list for three reasons: 1. Chuck’s stocks 1,000 different bottles of beer and offers several on draft; 2. Both the Greenwood and Central District beer shop/neighborhood gathering spaces are typically packed with as many kids as adults on the weekends; and 3. There are scoops of Full Tilt ice cream for dessert. There may not be a lot of room for strollers, but there’s plenty of space to grab a table, drink a pint of cider, tuck into fish and chips from a local food truck and lick lemon marshmallow ice cream cones with the kiddos.

Finnriver Farm & Cidery
OK, so it’s not technically a brewery. But this cidery on the Olympic Peninsula is absolutely worth the drive from Seattle, even with the tiniest of tykes. First, they make some seriously amazing cider (the dry-hopped cider will even convince the most ardent cider critics). Second, the space itself is a destination: there’s a fully functioning farm, a tasting room and even family-friendly music concerts on summer Sundays. Go when you have a whole weekend day to kill—you’ll want to enjoy at your leisure.

Want to try your hand at brewing beer yourself? Bob’s Homebrew Supply (2821 N.E. 55th St., Seattle) is a super kid-friendly store where you can pick up your supplies. On the weekends, it is filled with families and the owners are always pleased to see kids in the shop.
