I remember vividly the day I decided to start blogging. We were riding home from the North Carolina State Fair and it was numbingly cold. We’d been married about two years, and had just moved into our little home by the roadside.

I was working full-time as a proposal manager and he was crawling under houses fixing leaky pipes and installing water heaters. We were both employed, but stifled creatively.

He started beekeeping on the side, which was a really sweet idea. But once your queen flies away from the hive, the whole thing is pretty much shot, so after two failed attempts at keeping her happy at home, we let her go and apologized to everyone we’d promised honey.

For my outlet, I decided to blog. At the time, the movement was still in its infancy and I could count on one hand the number of blogger mamas I knew who were really making a name for themselves. Side note: I still read them all.

My first post went something along the lines of “So, I’m Courtney. This is my little life in a little house in a little town. Let’s follow along together on some of my adventures!” I had a Master’s in writing but was really unsure how to start this thing.

I quickly learned the ropes. I researched the best blogging platform solutions and I figured out which types of image resolutions looked the best on a screen. I learned just enough HTML to get by and figured out how to turn a picture of my cottage into a blog badge (remember those?).

Turns out, for a normal girl living a normal life, I had tons to say! I wrote about my dog’s antics, my romance with my husband, and my hopes for the future. And slowly, people started listening. They also started commenting. They left encouragement, and praise for my prose, and the kindest condolences when my grandpa passed away.

It was more than I’d imagined, and I was so grateful. I also felt really obligated. To post. Every day. To manage the expectations. To keep them interested.

So I tried to do it. I woke up very early before work and tried to pound the keyboard for 30 minutes or so and make something remotely interesting come out. But you know how it goes when you catch up with a friend you haven’t seen in a while? You gab furiously for about two hours and spill everything about what you’ve been up to, but at some point, the conversation plateaus.

You reach a point where you’ve said all there is to say and the other person is finished with the conversation too. That’s how I felt about blogging. I wanted to be there, I just didn’t have anything to add. It wasn’t unlike my senior year of cheerleading, where everything suddenly became uber-competitive and tumbling was a highlight and girls like me who could barely do a back-handspring suddenly had no school spirit, even though we’d been on a squad since grade school.

So one morning, I just did it. I quit. I set my alarm clock for half an hour later, got up and ate breakfast, and headed off to work without glancing at my laptop. Of course, I got to work and immediately started scanning my phone and checking my social channels to see if anyone had commented and missed me. They hadn’t.

And day after day, it got easier, and I felt freer. I still blog intermittently, when something really significant happens to me or inspiration just strikes. It isn’t a chore anymore, but a choice, and that shift in itself is exhilarating.

My daughter came to me the other night and said she wanted to play soccer. I wasn’t surprised. I’d watched her at our neighbor’s chicken stew the weekend before and saw her kick hard and straight. Of course, every mom looks at her child and thinks “Did I birth the next Picasso?” every time she sees a finger painting, so only time will tell how deep this talent lies.

I’m going to enroll her for the next season. I’ll buy the cleats and the overpriced t-shirt and I’ll sit on a cold soccer field with my cup of coffee in hand. I might even go out and buy that “Soccer Mom” hat I saw in the local bakery the other day.

But if she comes up to me and tells me it isn’t fun anymore? I’ll make sure she fulfills any outstanding obligations to her team. Then, I’ll let her stop.

There’s a lesson to be learned in sticking with something, and seeing something through to completion. I get that. I’ll teach that.

But I’ll also teach her to search for the joy, and to run after it when she finds it. I’ll teach her that sometimes our feelings change and what once made us happy might not anymore and that’s OK. Studies show we’re more stressed out now than we’ve ever been. Three years old is too early to start that cycle.

I read this really great quote by poet David Whyte once that read, in part, “Anyone or anything that does not bring you alive is too small for you.”

Sweet girl. You’ve got so much to see, and so much to learn.

Chase after the big stuff.

Hi, y'all! I'm Courtney. I'm a mama of two, married to my high-school sweetheart and making a life in the little town I grew up in. I'm a writer by trade, but a mama by heart. I love chocolate and I love family. Let's navigate this crazy, messy, blessed journey together!

Birthdays are always a special occasion for families, but one young boy decided to make his day extra special by popping the question to his stepdad at his party. No, not that question. The heart-melting proposal Kalani Watson made to his mom’s husband was to ask if he would officially adopt him as his son. Grab some tissues and check out the video below to see if his birthday wish came true.

As the video shows, Kalani decided that his birthday party would be the perfect time to read his stepdad, Brandon Williamson, a tear-inducing letter. “Dad, I know today is supposed to be all about me, but today is really about us,” Kalani read out loud as his family and friends listened on. He retold stories of their relationship together, pausing only to ask Brandon if he thought he could live without him and his mother. Brandon, of course, replied no.

“So let’s stop playing and make it official.” Kalani continued. “Brandon Craig Williamson, will you do me the biggest favor in the world? Will you adopt me?” Brandon then opened the box Kalani handed him and found a blank adoption application letter inside.

Kalani had been planning the surprise with his mother for two months and had originally planned to pop the question on Father’s Day, but he just couldn’t wait. “I was thinking, ‘I earned this,’” Brandon told the Huffington Post. “Most parents automatically get their child’s love. I had to grind for this, I had to show him I’m not going anywhere. So since I have had to work hard for his love I don’t take it for granted. So it was a honor and one of the greatest moments of my life.” Clearly the this thoughtful father and son are a perfect match.

The dread of adjusting clocks an hour may be ending in California. Proposal AB 385 passed a State Senate committee this week and will now move to the Senate Appropriations Committee. California voters may have the opportunity to vote in favor of remaining in Pacific Standard Time year-round.

Here’s a hilarious look at the history (and reason for!) Daylight Saving:

Hawaii and much of Arizona are the only two states that observe standard time year-round.

Looking for some inspiration and an upbeat album that is sure to get stuck in your head – in a good way? Portland musician, Aaron Nigel Smith, just released the digital version of his 1World Chorus Bob Marley tribute album, Celebrating Bob Marley, in honor of what would have been Bob Marley’s 70th birthday. Smith’s 1World Chorus brings music education to underprivileged children throughout the world. Read on to see what we found out when we chatted with him recently.

The Musicians
Kids and parents may be familiar with Smith’s work on the PBS kids show, “Between the Lions,” but Smith is also the creator of Smith’s 1World Chorus is made up of kids, ages 7-18, from his music program from the U.S., Kenya, Columbia and Jamiaca. The 10-track album, with the help of Ziggy Marley’s Tuff Gong recorded over the course of 18 months in studios all over the world, features the kids’ vocals and instrumentation under Smith’s direction.

“I’ve been a Marley fan more than half of my life and I’ve been a singer my whole life,” says Smith. “This is a culmination of those things, along with the children’s music program. I formed 1World Chorus back in 2006. Our mission is to connect kids through music projects. We’ve done choral outreach projects and drumming projects with kids in Kenya, Jamaica and the U.S. It’s been, not necessarily reggae, but it’s been sort of a world music vibe, up until now, where we do folk music, classical music and pop music and all types of stuff from around the world.”

For this album, Smith worked with kids locally from School of Rock, then extended it to their Seattle and L.A. locations. He then opened the recordings up to Portland area schools, King Elementary School, the Oregon Trail Academy in Boring and the SW Charter School, as well as singers from New York, Kenya and Jamaica.

The Album
The tracks include the kids singing and playing all of the instruments on the album, featuring some of Bob Marley’s most beloved songs:

1. Jamming
2. Three Little Birds
3. No Woman No Cry
4. Smile Jamaica
5. Bend Down Low (featuring Bob Marley’s 10 year-old granddaughter, Judah Marley)
6. Wake Up and Live
7. One Love
8. Lively Up Yourself
9. Is This Love
10. Redemption Song

The Support
Smith says that they use the CDs as a fundraising tool so they can continue to bring the programs to the kids in impoverished communities, including orphanages in Kenya, schools in the slums of Kingston and in St. Anne, where Bob Marley went to school.

“We are in these communities bringing them free music programs, but on top of that, through the CDs and recordings, I’m able to engage more sponsors by sharing the music with people like Remo Drums and Martin Guitars, who have also donated drums to the program so we can give them to the kids who participated as well as guitars. That continues to grow, the more exposure we get and we’re able to bring, not only funds, but musical instruments and programs to these kids in rural areas.”

Guitar Center and Keen Shoes have also been backing the program in a huge way since the beginning, giving instruments, shoes and socks and paying for travel expenses.

The Show
On May 22nd, at 5:30 p.m. fans will be able to see Smith and some of the kids of 1World Chorus perform at King Elementary School, 4906 NE 6th Ave. Some of Smith’s Portland 1World Chorus crew will be singing a variety of folk songs from around the world, as well as a couple of the Marley songs from the new album.

“RACC and & Oregon Arts Commission funded a proposal that I submitted last year to bring school children from diverse backgrounds together to collaborate on a performance,” says Smith. “During my Right Brain Residency prior to the current workshops, we recorded the music for the Bob CD. Many of these students were featured on the recording. To be clear, the focus of my current residency is folk music from around the world, not exclusively Marley. The kids will sing a variety of folk songs from around the world and culminating performance will end with a couple of the Marley songs from the new recording.”
The Details

The Celebrating Bob Marley  CD will be available at the show and is available digitally right now via iTunes, Amazon and Tuff Gong Worldwide. For more information, check out oneworldchorus.org.

We came up with over-the-top baby product inventions that are totally faux, but we think they stand a chance at hitting store shelves. Think the Binky Headgear sounds ridiculous? If tee pees for pee pees can sell, we say, why not? Check out our phony baby inventions and tell us if you think they’re business proposal-worthy or just plain busted.

The Mommy-n-Me Sleep Mask
What it does: Matching mom-n-baby silky sleep masks are for little divas who can’t stand to sleep in anything but complete darkness. Just like mommy, the Queen Diva.
Why we want it: The mini version of mommy’s anything is so darn cute and it can actually get baby to fall asleep? Jackpot!

Doctor Sticker
What it does:
Like a stick-on thermometer, Doctor Sticker can be slapped on your kid to diagnose basic illnesses. Can’t get in to see your pediatrician? Doctor Sticker can be used anywhere, anytime when baby seems sick.
Why we want it:
Within a few minutes, text pops up on the dotted line that may read something like, “It’s just a cold,” “Oh, no, stomach flu,” or “There’s nothing wrong. This must be your first child.”

The Baby Formula Keurig-Thing-a-Ma-Jig
What it does: For those who go the formula route but can’t stand the smell of it, try the Baby Formula Keurig-Thing-a-Ma-Jig. Brew fresh formula in seconds in different flavors so your whole kitchen will smell like vanilla, instead of stinking like, well, uh, formula.
Why we want it: Because formula smells pretty nasty but baby has to eat!

Binky Headgear
What it does: Baby’s binky is strapped right into his mouth using a headgear-like contraption. Sure, it might give your junior high flashbacks that you’ve been trying to forget since you were 12, but at least you won’t have to pick a binky up off of the floor every 20 seconds.
Why we want it: Because picking up baby’s binky off of the floor every 20 seconds is eating away at our sanity.

Baby Changer Va-poo-rizer
What it does: This baby changer is more than just a changing table — it also has a built-in vaporizer that sucks up the stank. So the next time baby makes a mess …you know, one of those that requires a three-diaper change … the changer will make it smell like it never happened.
Why we want it: Because some diaper changes are so stinky, we actually need to move out of the house.

photo: Jesse! S? and Quinn Dombrowski via flickr

Baby Walker Floor Polisher
What it does: Teaches baby how to walk and shines your floors like the top of the Chrysler Builder while you lazily watch both from the couch.
Why we want it: The soft microfiber pads on the bottom of your baby’s walker polish up your floors with every step she takes, so you won’t know if you’re prouder about the walking or her actually doing chores around the house!

What do you think? Love them or leave them? Let us know in the Comments below!
