Kids who love to swim could care less what the weather forecast is – they’ll ask to take a dip outside even though the skies are gray and the water is ice-cold. So what do you do with your tadpoles now that the rainy season is here? Simple. Grab their swimsuits and check out Tacoma’s newest indoor pool. Open year-round, and heated to a cozy 85 degrees, your crew can get their water fix without freezing their tooshies. Dive in for the deets!

The Recreation Pool
The original pool at People’s Community Center opened in 1979 and remained a part of Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood until it permanently closed down in 2008. After undergoing a major reconstruction project, the facility has finally reopened and is quickly becoming the go-to indoor pool for South Sound families. Large floor-to-ceiling windows fill the room with tons of natural light, giving it a nice outdoorsy feel compared to the basement-like atmosphere you get with some indoor pools. It also has a unique L- shaped design that divides the pool into three distinct sections: a shallow area, a current channel and a lap lane area that transforms into two basketball courts and a water-walk play area during open swim sessions.

Splash-tastic Features
Your little ones will feel completely at home in this particularly shallow pool, with depths ranging from two feet in the shallowest part to just over five feet in the deep end. Wide steps give a gradual entry into the spacious kiddie area, and you’ll find the submerged bench around the perimeter is the perfect place for water bugs to practice their jumps from, or where mom and dad can have a seat to watch as the excitement unfolds.

The current channel is like a mini lazy river (minus the tubes) with jets that propel kids around in circles as if they’re spinning on a merry-go-round. The duo basketball hoops are perfect for half-court games, and balls are provided so you don’t have to bring your own. But the big draw for your older kiddos will be the water walking feature (Psst… swimmers must be age 7 or older, plus be at least 5 feet tall or able to pass a swim test to do the walk). Floating disks shaped like lily pads and log rounds create a path for traversing the pool. Kids can try to make their way across using their balance alone, or with the help of a cargo net suspended overhead.

The Spray Pad
Sure to become your little one’s favorite place to play during the cold months ahead, you’ll find Tacoma’s first indoor splash pad is loaded with ground sprays galore and plenty of run-around room for big imaginations to roam free. There are colorful buckets that pour surprise showers and dozens of bubbling geysers to dance around in, but what we love the most about this spray pool is that it’s stationed right next to the pool so you can easily stay close to your little ones while keeping an eye on your older kids who swim.

Have a Swim Party
If you’re hoping to make a big splash for your kiddo’s next birthday, the People’s Pool is offering a sweet deal on party packages through the end of 2016. Prices start at $40 per hour plus admission for parties held during afternoon and evening open swim sessions, and private parties are available Saturdays and Sundays from 4:30 p.m.- 6:30 p.m. starting at $85 per hour. Packages include the use of a large party room located adjacent to the pool and plenty of water fun for everyone.

Good to Know
1. There isn’t a direct walkway between the locker rooms and the pool, but you’ll find three private family restrooms with showers located inside the pool area near the splash pad.

2. Towels are not provided, so be sure to pack some along for your crew.

3. Free lockers are available for guests to use, but you’ll need to bring your own lock to securely store your belongings.

4. In addition to open swim sessions, the facility also offers lessons, exercise classes and lap swim times – no membership necessary.

Rain shmain! Portland parents know that the birthday party must go on amidst the wet weather. Luckily, we have a wealth of crazy-fun indoor party opps for the guests of honor to choose from. No matter what the weather’s like outside, the following spots will give your kiddos a special fete they won’t soon forget. Click through our album to see them all.

Rose City Futsal

Open for just over a year, this indoor sports playground is the place for young Timbers and Thorns-in-training to get their kicks on. Slightly different than soccer (*ahem*... football, that is), futsal is a fast-paced game of lively teamwork, focusing on ball control and quick passing. Birthday parties feature 60 minutes of court time (equipment included!) and a private party for another 45 minutes. You bring the cake or cupcakes, then round out your refreshments by choosing from the menu items at Clive's Public House, the on-site pub that will make the adults want to return for their own birthday celebrations.

True, most Stumptown parents boast an impressively high tolerance to precipitation, but on some dreary, drizzly winter days we all need a bit more motivation than usual to put on our boots and head outside. Here, some of our fave parks and playgrounds to visit with your offspring during the rainy season.

Grant Park, NE 33rd and Grant Place
You know Grant Park for its Beverly Cleary Sculpture Garden, playground, off-leash dog park (or all of the above), but follow the path behind Beverly Cleary’s Hollyrood campus and you’ll find a group of towering pine trees that serve as a near-perfect shelter during any downpour. Smaller kids can bring buckets and shovels and dig in the dirt. And it’ll stoke the imagination of older kids who can pretend they’re setting up house/on the run/hiding from parents, etc.

Gabriel Park, SW 45th and Vermont St.
What we love about this lush 90-acre park? No matter the weather, you won’t be the only family here. Maybe it’s the draw of the 10,000 sq-foot skatepark. Or the easy trails that wind through a sweet patch of woods. Personally, we think it’s the crazy cool hills that kids love to run up and down, over and over (and over) again.

Irvington Elementary School Playground, 1320 NE Brazee
Rain or shine, the playground behind this public school is the place to play on weekends. Bike, scoot, and run under the covered area or venture out onto the blacktop where a brightly painted map allows kiddos to jump from one country to another.

Macleay Park, NW 29th Ave. and Upshur St.
This gorgeous, 140-acre park is so dense with Doug firs and western red Cedars that even on the rainiest day, you won’t get drenched, and kids will love hiking into the deep ravines. Park in the Upper Macleay parking lot and it’s only a half-mile trek to the abandoned Stone House, the  oddly enchanting remains of a former public restroom. (We know. That sounds weird, but check it out and you’ll see what we mean.)

Chimney Park, 9360 N. Columbia Blvd.
Okay, so there aren’t a tremendous amount of trees here. (Translation: you might get soaked.) What Chimney Park does have: Dogs, and lots of ‘em. This 18-acre area is an off-leash, completely fenced-in dog park. You and your little ones can hit the small trail loop while cockers and Labs happily chase and fetch balls beside you. If you’ve got a little pet lover, we guarantee they’ll be too distracted by the canine company to complain about the rain.

Laurelhurst Park, SE Cesar E. Chavez and Stark St.
Paths to run on. Hills to run down. Steps to race up. But perhaps the most important thing you need to know about this lovely tree-filled park is that they have ducks. You can’t feed them, but you can watch them bobbing through the water and quacking importantly, completely nonplussed by the rain. Once you’ve had enough, head over to one of the cafes on nearby Belmont and warm up with some hot chocolate.
