After a long summer filled with fun activities, it can be a relief to send the kids back to school––but it can also feel a little bittersweet once the house is empty. Jennifer Garner’s back-to-school meme captures this feeling perfectly.

Mom of three Garner took to Instagram to share her thoughts on sending her kids back to school. Like many moms, she is clearly filled with a mixture of excitement and sadness, which her Spongebob meme sums up pretty well. “It was time, Lord, yes. But why does the house feel so empty?” she captioned the post.

This isn’t the first back-to-school meme Garner has nailed. Last year she shared an equally hilarious post on what moms look like at the start of summer versus the end.

The caption included the hashtag #iwillmissthembut. Yup, momming can definitely be a complex rollercoaster of emotions.

It can be hard to imagine that SpongeBob was ever anymore childlike than he already is, but now fans can get a look at what their favorite square, yellow sponge was like as a 10-year-old. Nickelodeon has just announced a new SpongeBob spin-off Kamp Koral.

According to Variety, new SpongeBob series will follow the adventures of a young SpongeBob and a Patrick as they attend summer sleepaway camp “building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest.”

“SpongeBob has an incredible universe to expand upon and the greenlight for Kamp Koral is a testament to the strength and longevity of these characters known and loved by generations of fans around the world,” said Ramsey Naito, EVP of animation production and development at Nickelodeon.

SpongeBob Squarepants Is Getting a New Spinoff Series, Says Nickelodeon

Welcome Back to Jurassic World with Netflix’s New Series

This First Look at Netflix’s New “The Dark Crystal” Is Pure Magic

Want to know what the hottest toys trends are this year?  We hightailed it to New York for the 116th Annual Toy Fair in order to get the scoop on the latest and greatest on toys and playtime. From bubble innovation to the best family games, here’s what play looks like in 2019.

The Biggest Trends in Toys

Magnetic Play
While the past decade has introduced us to massive boxes of magentic tiles (how did we live without them?), 2019 builds upon the fundamental shapes by adding animal faces, battery power and wheels, in the form of kits that bring your creation to life. For the preschool-set, we love the new Magformers Animal Jumble ($59.99). Older kids will love the GeoSmart Collection, including the Moon Lander ($52.99).

Nostalgia
1980s and 1990s toy pop culture was evident throughout Toy Fair, from vintage board games, to old school favorites like Lite Brite, Weebles, and Lava lamps. Two new toys that tipped their hat to the 1990s but offered a decidedly  modern twist are the Blockbuster Board Game from Big Potato Games (“The golden age of video rentals is back! Introducing a super-simple party game for anyone who has ever seen a movie”), which will be exclusively at Target in March 2019, and a collection of Spongebob Squarepants toys, including a Giggle Blaster,a weapon that sprays aerosol party string (included) and shouts over 15 SpongeBob phrases and sounds. The Giggle Blaster arrives in the Fall 2019 and retails for $19.99 (PS – Want to feel old? 2019 is Spongebob’s 20th Anniversary!)

Science Experiments
SpongeBob isn’t the only one celebrating an anniversary. The United Nations has declared 2019 the “International Year of the Periodic Table of the Chemical Elements,” and in celebration, Ooze Labs has released a chemistry set that will allow your budding chemist to safely explore 20 different experiments. For younger kids, Learning Resources introduced Beaker Creatures in Fall 2018, offering a science lab with a collectable component. 2019 brings a new Alien Experiment Lab and collectible alien creatures, including Swampoids, and Dogstars.

Real Life Heroes
While superhero toys will never go away, we were happy to see a renewed focus on “real life hero” toys including firemen, policemen and ambulance workers. Both LEGO and Mattel have introduced new action figures and play sets.

Mattel has relaunched Rescue Heroes, a line of collectibles that was popular in late 90s. The goal with the re-launch is to focus on preschoolers to stimulate children’s imagination and sense of adventure without involving violence. The product line will be available exclusively at Walmart stores beginning Summer 2019. It also coincides with a newly launched YouTube series.

LEGO is also focused on celebrating first responders with a  a new police play set in their City series, as well as a fire fighter play set available in a Duplo kit, which is aimed at preschoolers.

Play Sets for Small Spaces

We’re happy to see a slew of play activities for smaller spaces, and Fisher Price welcomed several innovative products perfect for apartments and travel, including an interactive kitchen that is portable and can be folded for storage, and a line of plush pretend sets, including a campfire. Sago expanded on it’s mini role playing sets with new professions including a veterinarian.

Movie Franchises

Though the long-awaited Toy Story 4 movie hasn’t hit theaters yet (May 2019) it hasn’t stopped the behind-the-scenes collaboration with some of our favorite toy makers.  The new LEGO movie is now headed to streaming channels, though kids will be thrilled with keeping the characters alive through a variety of action figures and play sets.

Some of our favorites from Toy Fair include, the LEGO Duplo play set (the first time a movie franchise has extended to Duplo, and the Barbie collaboration with Bo Peep as a super hero.

Nerf Alternatives
Did you know ax-throwing is now a thing? The folks at Zing, makers of cool outdoor kids gear), definitely know it, and have kid-proofed the sport so your little warriors can have fun without doing too much damage. Introducing the Zax, a soft-suction ax for throwing. Zing also has a new line of Hyperstrike bow & arrow products, launching exclusively at Target in May 2019 (other retailers in the Fall).  Designed with bungee cords, these bows can launch arrows up to 250 feet and are good for independent or team play (ages 14+). While Marshmallow shooters have been around for a few years, the The Marshmallow Fun Company is releasing The Jumbow, a large bow that will fire arrows with marshmallow heads (which totally alleviates the marshmallow stuck in barrel problem).

Hedgehogs & Sloths, Oh My!

Unicorns and Llama are so 2017. 2019 is all about Hedgehogs and Sloths, according to Toy Fair insiders. A few that stood out, Spike, the Fine Motor Hedgehog, which was a finalist for Toy of the Year 2019, helps todders 18 months + develop fine motor skills. Tumbling Hedgehog, a STEM experiment kit that allows kids to build their own robotic pet hedgehog will be released in July 2019, and the Fisher Price Smooth Moves Sloth, part of the new Linkimals line,  focuses on baby’s (9 months +)  gross motor development through music and motion by clapping its hands together, bobbing its head and activating music to encourage baby to move and groove along.

Red Tricycle Stand-Outs

Little People, Big Dreams Book Series
With stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, this empowering series celebrates the important life stories of wonderful people  of the world, from designers and artists to scientists, all of them went on to achieve incredible things, yet all of them began life as a little child with a dream. The girls books launched in 2018 to much fanfare.

The first boys books in the popular series featuring Stephen Hawking and Mohammed Ali, were published in February 2019, Bruce Lee and David Bowie are coming later in 2019.

Fisher Price Wonder Makers Design System
Move over Thomas, Fisher Price is unveiling a whole new world of imaginative play and building this Fall. Built in response to consumer demand, the Wonder Maker Design System is gender neutral, a mix of textiles (felt, wood and plastic) and battery free. The Around Town starter kits retail for $39.99 and will be available for Christmas.

Bonus: The label informs consumers that the outer box can be recycled via curbside programs in most communities across the U.S. and the inside plastic bag can be recycled through store drop-off programs that accept plastic film.

If nautical nonsense be something you wish, then turn your attention to Nickelodeon, where a new SpongeBob spinoff series promises more undersea adventures for fans.

With more young viewers turning their sights on streaming platforms like Netflix and the highly anticipated Disney+, Nickelodeon’s new president Brian Robbins understands that cable networks have to step up their game to entice young audiences. That’s why he just green-lit a new spinoff series based on one of Nickelodeon’s most popular series, Spongebob Squarepants.

Robbins recently revealed his plans to attract viewers to the network saying, “I think today we need to make a volume of quality franchises, but not necessarily feed a million episodes of those shows. We need to keep a constant number of new shows coming, and not necessarily make one show with 80 episodes.”

Sadly the series creator, Stephen Hillenburg, will not be involved in creating the Spongebob spinoff as he passed away last year after battling ALS. There is no word yet on which Bikini Bottom characters will star in the show or when it will air, but it sounds like there will be lots of new fun in the pipeline at Nickelodeon for young fans.

While you wait, you can catch up on all your favorite episodes starring the lovable yellow sponge on the the brand-new Nickelodeon Spongebob channel on YouTube.

What do the makers of Menchie’s do when they get a little hungry for something that’s not a flavor of the month?  Open up a Neapolitan-style pizzeria!  At MidiCi in Sherman Oaks, beneath show stealing stovepipe ovens and meticulous ingredients lies a pizza spot that is worth traversing canyons and freeways.  Exceptional eating, awesome atmosphere, and the monkeys are as mad for it as they are for Menchie’s.

When Is A Date Night Not A Date Night?
When you bring the kids! Dine beneath a sprawling indoor olive tree, under soaring ceiling on sleek black barstools.  There’s an espresso machine aptly named after a Greek goddess and artisanal gelato that is destination worthy all by itself. It’s sure a far cry from the family pizza scene of yore: no TV set on a SpongeBob loop and/or oversized rodents coming over to force a photo. But this place, beauty notwithstanding, is designed for family. And the pizza?  It’ll blow you (and the kids) away.

Step Back In Time
The scene here is less hyper-stimulating (not counting the pizza) and more sublime.  With culture creeping out of every corner, bring the kids around the restaurant for a look—even the condiment counter is a vision.  And mind the floor on the way there, it’s micro-cement, hand applied with a trowel, honoring the tradition dating back to the Roman Empire.  So you get a little art history alongside your artisan pie.

Speaking of history, MidiCi pizza makers have all endured rigorous training in authentic Neapolitan pizza gastronomy and they make the magic right in the heart of the restaurant.  The ovens, sand and stone hand hewn, are wood firing wonders, hand built by a third-generation family in Naples, burning at 1000 degrees the Neapolitan way.  Cool eye candy for kids, to see the way pizza was made when and where it was invented.  And then to taste pizza exactly how it should taste.

“Fast” Food, Not “Fast Food”
Get in line and pick your pizza pleasures (MidiCi literally translates into “You tell me”) and let the prized pizza makers top it with whatever you like you (there are plenty of kiddo friendly fixins). Got a kid with a penchant for pickiness? Not a problem—they’ll go as plain as they prefer.  If  you’re feeling too tired to make decisions, they offer classics and pre-created specialties and substitutions are delightfully accommodated.  Pies are one size and range in price from $7-$14.  If they can agree on toppings, kiddos can probably get away with splitting one.

Then sit and relax, but not too much, because these pies bake in 90 seconds, so before they can squeeze out even one verse of the “I’m hungry” blues, dinner is served. Dessert you can order when you’re done eating your meal; it’s at a separate register where you don’t have to wait in line with the pizza people.

Here’s what’s in your pizza dough: Non-GMO flour imported from Naples, pure water, sea salt, live yeast.  That is it.  And what they put on top is just as pure; crushed non-GMO Italian peeled tomatoes, “white gold” buffalo mozzarella; it’s all the stuff you’d use at home.  If you had a grandma from Naples coming over to make dinner.

Beyond the Pies
With a whole burrata section to delight in, this place makes introducing burrata to bambinos easy.  The Burrata with purple kale, grape tomatoes, and homemade pesto is kind of like pizza deconstructed.  So good that routine kale rejection won’t happen.  They may even try a bit of beet with the burrata.  Expanding palates, one bite at a time.

Even if you think you’re too full for dessert, you need to try it.  The signature Nutella calzone is completely off the chain. All puffed up and bursting with berries and banana, doused in Nutella…fuggedaboudit.  The kids won’t even beg for Menchie’s on the way home.

While you’d happily eat here without the kids, the beauty of this place is that they’re not only welcomed, they’re wanted. It feels beautiful and bright and makes you linger and chat over an espresso, but service is also as fast and friendly as eating at your local neighborhood joint, or at a friend’s house.  MidiCi has created a space for congregating and reconnecting over manna from heaven, or Naples.  Same thing.
