Dear Confessional,

I admit it. I’m a complete hypocrite. I’m not afraid to say it, and a part of me believes that I truly deserve it. The “practice what you preach” philosophy is ok to a point, but as the mom of the house, I deserve some leniency here.

Even though I’m utterly exhausted most of the time, I don’t stop until I’m cross-eyed at bedtime, mid-lullaby. As the home cleaner, shopper, chef, tutor, mom-doctor, organizer, blogger, and entrepreneur, I have confirmed my suspicion—that I am a complete hypocrite. It’s almost an art, actually, and I’m totally ok with it. I also believe that I’m not the only one, so here are my top 10 scenarios that showcase the art of hypocrisy, because we parents need a little levity to the incredible rollercoaster that is parenting. Enjoy the ride.

1. Too Much Junk in the Trunk: Just say “no” to kids’ binging on heaps of junk food… and yes to the Supermom diving elbow-deep into the Nutella jar or face-planting the pint of Ben & Jerry’s, during or after a kid tantrum.

2. Yakkity-Yak, Don’t Talk Back: “Don’t you dare talk back or raise your voice!”… and we say that while raising our voice, but of course. Busted.

3. Sleep Time On-Time: Oh the never-ending sleep issue. In all honesty, maybe we just want some more evening ME time. Maybe we know what happens when our over-tired kids run-amok in the later hours of the evening, once exhaustion sets in. Maybe we really just want them to grow and be healthy. Regardless of the reason, why is it that when Supermoms have the opportunity to go to bed early like we daydream about, we then become transfixed on prime-time tv or glaring, zombie-eyed at the world of social media?

4. Blowing a Gas-ket: Manners, manners, manners—so important to teach our kids effective manners while they’re young, right? Burping and farting all merit a big “excuse me” to learn that it’s not “nice.” But let’s be real for a moment, sometimes it just feels awesome to let a big one rip, take a big sniff, laugh about it, and maybe even boldly take all the credit.

5. Screen Time Sayonara: Supermom may be the queen of lecturing about too much screen time… yet we have no issue, whatsoever, walking around with the phone in hand for another “look” at the unimportant happenings on social media—yes, even while on the toilet.

6. Name-Calling Nonsense: “No name-calling!”… except when Supermom louses up with some less-than-classy name-calling metaphors that accurately describe the kids crawling under the table, rolling around the floor, or refusing to clean up a disaster.

7. Pick and Flick: There’s something so disgusting and soothing about cleaning house deep in the trenches of your schnoz. As we keep reminding the kids to “get your finger out of there,” for some reason, parents have no problem digging deep ourselves, and especially while driving. Do you really think that other drivers can’t see you in there? Do you really think that the nasty little boogie magically disappears just because you flicked it and can’t find it? Uh-huh.

8. Importance of the Pyramid: Supermoms love to emphasize the value in nutrition and eating a well-balanced meal. Kids may even have a stare-off with their veggies, yet if Supermom wants to have a heaping bowl of cereal or half a box of thin mints and call that dinner… then back off slowly, husbands, and don’t make any sudden moves!

9. Pet Snacks: “Don’t feed the dog table food! No more after that one, you’ll make her sick!” Supermom then turns the corner and feeds the fat dog off of the plate because those puppy eyes are too hard to resist—and she also gets to clean up the vomit the next morning. Don’t question us, just accept it.

10. Tread Lightly: On a family get-a-way, Supermom is feeling a bit over-indulgent. After moaning about her bikini bloatation,   swearing to start cutting back right away, and then blaming the dryer for “shrinking” all of her pants, DO NOT say a word or even make direct eye-contact when she orders another creamy frozen drink and dessert. Just call the maintenance person to check the dryer and tell her she’s beautiful, trust me.

Feel free to share your own Supermom hypocrisies. Own it and learn to laugh about it. You are not alone in this wonderful, comical, crazy, emotional, and empowering journey called parenting.

With Love,

Quality family time doesn’t have to be all rainbows and lollipops. One family took their love of all things creepy and gory and turned it into a bonding moment with an incredibly unique daddy-daughter zombie photoshoot.

Mom of three and photographer Tiffany Renfroe set up an unusual photo shoot for her youngest daughter, 11-month-old Oakley, and her husband, Daniel, inspired by his passion for horror films. As Renfroe explained to CafeMom, “My daughter Kaiden and him started watching The Walking Dead,” she says. “It was their thing, waiting day by day for the next season.”

Renfroe decided to turn that special bonding time in another way to bond with a zombie twist on the traditional daddy-daughter photoshoot. It took several days for Renfroe to scout locations and put together everything she needed, but she did it with the assistance of her kids. It also took a whopping two hours to get Daniel and baby Oakely in make-up (no contacts were used on her eyes for the record, all editing magic), but again it was the perfect opportunity for more creative family fun.

“There was no getting her to stay still. I worked in her world and made it fun — the tricks moms know how to pull when they need or want things done,” she told CafeMom.

In the end, all the effort paid off with a unique experience the family will never forget. Though Oakley will be too young to remember, she’ll have the photos to remind her. The internet won’t soon forget it either. Renfroe shared the zombie daddy-daughter photoshoot in a Facebook post where it swiftly went viral, garnering thousands of likes and shares.

Renfroe is grateful for the response and hopes it will inspire other families to get creative with their time together. “Whatever you choose to do with your children, do something with them!” she told CafeMom.

“Children need our time, they need us, they need laughs, giggles, hugs, and adventure! That is what they will remember! They aren’t going to remember eating cake and berries off of some fake intestines until the photos are shared at her wedding.”

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Snapchat, YikYak, Periscope . . . as a parent, you might be asking yourself, “what the heck is YikYak? And do I really need another social app?” Snapchat — most famous for allowing teenagers to send scandalous photos and videos that can only be viewed for ten seconds — just added a new way to take selfies, and the answer is yes – we quite possibly do need another social app.

The new feature, called “lenses,” are essentially new, creative filters for your selfies. When you’re taking a snap (read = photo), press and hold on your face. Snapchat will momentarily scan your face to determine where to place the filter. The results are hilarious and trending all over Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Not to be left out, kids are having a great time with the filters, too. Scroll down for some of our favorites!

There are seven different Lenses you can choose from, including heart eyes, puking rainbows, bulging eyes, and an aging filter. Scroll through each on the bottom of the app before you take a snap. As a warning, there are a couple of scary filters you should steer your kids away from – including a zombie vampire monster thing. Kids will love the heart eyes, and the puking rainbows, though!

It’s weird, wacky, and adds a little something extra to your selfie.

Kids love trucks. Big trucks, small trucks and even high-octane monster trucks. And there’s a good reason why. These beasts on wheels are an engine-revving, dirt-churning, car-crushin’, high-flying blast for truck lovers of all ages. Race through our guide to where to see, hear, smell, touch, and even ride in monster trucks!

Washington State Spring Fair: April 16-19, 2015

During the Washington State Spring Fair, kids (and adults) can experience the thrill of riding in a real tricked-out monster truck. A pro monster truck driver will take you for a white-knuckled spin in Zombie Tracker – performing stunts with YOU in the truck. Afterwards, everyone gets a photo opp with Zombie Tracker (and hopefully you won’t be as green as the truck). Rides available April 16, 3 p.m.-7 p.m.; April 17, 2 p.m.-6 p.m.; and April 18, noon-4 p.m. Rides cost $7 (cash) per person.

Monster Truck Show: In addition to riding in monster trucks, you and your crew can watch monster trucks battle it out in heart-stopping races and freestyle on April 17 – showing off amazing stunts. Different trucks join the circuit each year – look out for Bounty Hunter, Knucklehead, Enforcer and Double Trouble (owned by identical twin brothers from Gig Harbor). Psst! Be sure to stick around after the show for the terrific fireworks display.

Pit Party: Get up close and personal with monster trucks and meet their drivers (maybe score an autograph too). The Motorsport Mayhem Pit Party takes place before the Monster Truck Show and is exclusive to ticket holders. It’s like going backstage at a rock concert – but here it's the trucks that are the stars.

Good to Know:  If your kiddo is a real gearhead, check out the rest of the Washington State Spring Fair’s Motorsport Mayhem event, including SLAMFEST Demolition Derbies and Auto Alley.

Insider Tip: Save money by purchasing your tickets in advance; tickets include gate admission to the Spring Fair.

Good to Know
Monster truck shows are LOUD, so make sure your kiddies have ear protection (highly recommended for grownups too). Ear plugs are fine, but we’ve found ear muffs work best for kids as they don’t fall off so easily. Psst! If you forget to bring a pair, most shows have them for sale near the concession stands.

What is your family’s favorite monster truck experience? Tell us about it in the Comments below.

With the hectic holiday season upon us, parties, dinners and ho-ho-ho happenings are officially in full swing. That means trying to find time in your busy schedule to look not just presentable, but downright festive (instead of like a zombie with Hamburger Helper in your hair). Enter StyleBee, a brilliant new app now serving Los Angeles that delivers on-demand beauty services directly to you at home. Christmas came early this year!

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have time to make it to the salon.  Who does?  StyleBee has a very user friendly interface (because you also don’t have time to figure out how to use one more thing) that will let you book the service you need: anytime, anyplace. They work with many of the city’s top beauty stylists who will come directly to you when you have time and wherever you can meet them—whether it’s your house, office or hotel. Services are offered daily from 7:30 a.m. – 10:30 p.m. with as little as two hours advance notice.

Another thing we like it the flexible 4-hour cancellation policy on all appointments; a must when you have little kids and things can pop up last minute. Like a winter cold or just a case of the crankies that causes you to cancel your going-out plans.

So who exactly will be coming to your house?  Fear not, Stylebee screens and selects every professional on the service, so you don’t have to.  All pros are licensed and most have extensive experience working at the hottest salons in LA, as well as doing editorial, fashion and film work. Because they will be in your home, pros are thoroughly vetted with background checks, interviews and references.

Cost: The StyleBee app is free to download and beauty services start at $50. A 20% gratuity is automatically charged to your credit card upon booking your appointment. No fumbling for cash or awkward tipping necessary.
