If anyone understands the limitless line of uncomfortable questions kids can have, it’s parents. What we haven’t all mastered yet is precisely how we should respond to some of their trickier inquiries. So when a kid asked Ryan Reynolds about his relationship to costar Zoe Saldana in his new movie, it’s no surprise he was nearly speechless.

The event happened at an after-screening Q&A of his new movie, The Adam Project, where a boy amusingly asked Reynolds if “in the scene where you were kissing the girl, was that real?”

Reynolds’s immediate response was, “WHOA” followed by costar Jennifer Gartner declaring, “this is the best Q&A ever.” Gartner has had her fair share of embarrassing moments — just earlier this month she appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden telling viewers about an epic “reply-all” mom-fail that so many of us can relate to on a deep, mortifying level.

Once the initial shock wore off Reynolds scanned the audience, joking that his wife, Blake Lively, must be behind this, before he responded to the boy saying, it was kinda real, but “I didn’t mean it.”

He went on to admit that as a father of three, he’s struggled with these questions with his own kids, too adding, “if they watch this and they’re like, ‘Daddy, what are you doing?’ Like it’s exactly the tactic I’d use on them, not anger, just disappointment.” He finished by reiterating that it was a great question before he playfully pointed the boy towards the exit.

We can’t know for sure if Blake instigated the questioning (seems unlikely), but what we do know is that the sky is the limit when it comes to kids and uncomfortable questions.
