With movies like Turning Red streaming into living rooms everywhere and women’s health taking center stage, it seems that the days of hiding your tampon up your sleeve as you make your way to the bathroom are over. There’s enough drama to deal with as you navigate your way through tweendom, and getting your period shouldn’t add to it.

Thankfully, a new trend is emerging that celebrates the milestone instead: period parties! Meant to be over-the-top, these red-themed bashes are taking TikTok by storm. How do they work, and how should you start prepping to host your very own period party? Keep reading.

According to TikTok, no amount of red party balloons and tablecloths is enough. When you’re wondering if you should put back the glittery red streamers or the oversized helium balloons, don’t. In addition to perfectly colored party goods, you can also get creative when it comes to DIY designs. Think: panty liner bunting, blood drop-shaped confetti and goodie bags with red-themed treats. (Truly, this is what’s happening.)

Speaking of food, what’s a period party without some fun snacks? We’re talking uterus-topped cakes, red velvet cake, red jello and let’s not forget the fountain dripping with red chocolate that’s fit for a menstruating queen. For the moms accompanying their tween guests, why not up the ante and have a Bloody Mary bar? It just feels right.

And, you know, a party isn’t truly a party without some activities. When your guests arrive, make sure you have a fun craft like plain shirts the girls can decorate with red paint using a squirt bottle. There’s also the option of a fun zippered bag to take home packed with period supplies they can use for themselves.

While many of the videos on TikTok come with quirky music and tend to make you laugh, the important takeaway is that getting your period isn’t taboo. Period parties are providing a healthy environment to have conversations about the very normal (and certainly not “dirty”) occurrence.
