The studio hopes to bring back Helen Hunt

If you love cheesy natural disaster movies, your year is looking up. Deadline has reported that a Twister sequel is finally in the works.

The website is reporting that Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment are meeting with directors to film a follow up to the 1996 blockbuster. Though the film doesn’t have a director yet, it sounds as if Frank Marshall is producing it, with a screenplay written by Mark L. Smith.

“Sources said that the hope is to bring Helen Hunt back, with a drama that focuses on the daughter she had with the character played by the late Bill Paxton,” says Deadline. “She has caught the storm-chasing bug her parents had.”

If you recall, the original movie followed Dr. Jo Harding and a group of students testing a new device in the midst of a tornado. The 1996 film was packed with special effects that audiences had never seen before, which we hope carries into the sequel film. The movie ended up grossing close to $500 million and developed a cult fan base that will defend it til the end.

Regardless of who stars, sadly both Bill Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman will not. Both have passed away in the last decade and will be missed in the sequel.

“Bill really was that guy whose energy was infectious,” co-star Cary Elwes told The Hollywood Reporter. “He reminded you that you couldn’t take life seriously. That was Bill’s whole ethic. He took his work seriously, but he didn’t take himself very seriously. It was a long shoot; a very intricate and complex shoot because it involved a lot of special effects. I had a good time working on it.”

Despite so many questions in the air, including who the director will be, both Universal and Amblin are aiming to start filming in the spring of spring 2023, according to Deadline.
