Here’s How to Get One from Krispy Kreme Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: the U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued another major recall of raw beef. If this sounds familiar, you’d be right—the Oct. 4 recall comes just a week after a different, separate ground beef recall issued in September 2018. On Thursday, the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall of more than 6.5 million pounds of raw, non-intact beef products from JBS Tolleson, Inc. due to Salmonella concerns. Representatives for JBS Tolleson did not immediately return Red Tricycle’s request for comment. In total, the recall includes lengthy list of items that are sold under the brand names Cedar River Farms Natural Beef, Walmart, Showcase, Showcase/Walmart and JBS Generic. For the 31-page full recall product list, visit the FSIS’s website here. Why the Beef Was Recalled The USDA FSIS and U.S. Centers for Disease Control are currently investigating a 16-state Salmonella outbreak linked to the meat. Following initial reports in September, both the USDA and CDC have confirmed 57 consumers have contracted Salmonella. The illness onsets for those affected consumers all fell between Aug. 5 and Sep. 6, but this doesn’t rule out the possibility of more cases as the investigation progresses. Salmonella causes serious abdominal issues, such as diarrhea, vomiting and severe cramps. Symptoms typically develop within 12 to 72 hours of eating the affected product and last for four to seven days. Healthy adults often recover without treatment. Young children, the elderly and anyone with a compromised immune system may require medical treatment. Always contact your healthcare provider immediately if you or your child has any of the afore-mentioned symptoms. How to Tell If Your Beef Meat Is Part of the Recall The recalled beef products were packaged between Jul. 26, 2018 and Sep. 7, 2018 and bear the establishment number “EST 267.” (You can find this number printed inside of the USDA mark of inspection on the packaging.) Given the wide range of products and retailers that are part of this recall, check the FSIS’s list here for specific items. The FSIS also maintains a current list or product labels for comparison. What Can Parents Do If you have the recalled meat, do not eat it. Throw out the meat immediately. You can also contact the JBS USA Consumer Hotline at (800) 727-2333 for more information about the recall. —Erica Loop RELATED STORIES: Over 200,000 Honda Cars Have Been Recalled for Faulty Backup Cameras Recall Alert: This Ready-to-Eat Frozen Chicken Could Have Metal Fragments Recall Alert: 130,000+ Pounds of Ground Beef Linked to E.
