Shopping for the best school supplies always starts with good intentions: fresh notebooks, perfectly sharpened pencils, maybe even an organized backpack. But let’s be real—by week two, something’s already lost, something’s broken, and someone is claiming they cannot possibly function without a different colored highlighter.
We write about the best products for a living, and these are the school supplies sitting in our carts as we speak. We’re sharing the best school supplies we actually buy for our own kids—the ones that survive the backpack black hole, last longer than a month, and save us from at least a few “I can’t find it!” meltdowns.
From genius organizers that tame the chaos to lunchboxes that keep snacks cold without juggling a dozen ice packs, these are the picks that make mornings smoother, homework a little less painful, and school days run (slightly) more on track. They’re fun, functional, and honestly, they’re the reason we don’t completely panic in the school supply aisle. Because as much as we’d love to believe the “perfect” shopping list exists, the truth is, it’s never just about the pencils. It’s about finding supplies that really work for our kids, and these are our must-have, never-let-us-down picks.
Our Go-To: Staples
Staples nailed it this year (and we've been relying on them big-time): backpacks around $20, notebooks that last more than a day, water bottles that don’t leak on homework, and glue that does its job (plus everything else on that classroom list—seriously). Prices start low (yes, 25 cents is a thing), so we've been stocking up for the whole year without panicking.
A backpack that looks cool and holds up? Yes, please. This Herschel x LEGO collab is sturdy, roomy, and has just enough playful details to make our kids excited to carry it every day. Well, most days.
Swap the “You’re a champ!” index cards for hilarious jokes you can tear off and slide right into their lunch box. It’s a low-effort way to make your kid the lunch table legend.
Because our kids will definitely glue something they shouldn’t, we might as well make it smell like cupcakes. These washable, clear glue sticks come in fun dessert scents like sugar cookie, apple pie, and watermelon, making them slightly less annoying when they’re used to bedazzle the dog. Kid-fave, teacher-approved, and totally snack-scented (but not edible—tell them twice).
This zippered pouch fits so much stuff and stands upright on the desk like the overachiever it is. Durable, roomy, and easy to access mid-meltdown over math homework, it's basically the pencil case equivalent of a supportive best friend. Comes in cute colors, too.
These are the beginner pencils that hold up to real kid use. The triangular shape makes it easier for little hands to grip, the bright neon colors make them fun to reach for, and they come pre-sharpened, so you’re not scrambling on the first day.
Hydration meets cafeteria disco. Stainless steel, dishwasher-safe, straw lid, and easy to find on hectic mornings (whether it's still dark outside or not).
The whole bag goes in the freezer overnight—no ice packs needed. By morning, it’s ready to keep snacks and sandwiches cold until the end of the school day. Less stuff to pack, more chill lunch magic.
Fun enough that our kids actually want to use them. The characters are cute, the colors pop, and having ten in a pack means we can stash a few in backpacks, a few at home, and still have extras when one inevitably disappears into the couch cushions.
Because the “I can’t, my pencil’s broken” excuse gets old fast. This little guy has a twist-to-sharpen design, a covered blade for safety, and an easy-open tray that actually keeps shavings contained (phew). It even lets you choose between sharp or blunt tip for smaller kids.
No sharpening. No broken tips. These are the colored pencils our kids actually finish instead of abandoning halfway through. With 50 shades, they’ve got options for every art project (or doodle-covered math worksheet), and the clear barrels mean you can see exactly how much is left—aka fewer mid-project meltdowns.
We keep these on hand (literally) because they’re the only sanitizers our kids don’t complain about using. The spray feels light, smells amazing, and the slim bottles actually fit in backpacks and lunchboxes. Plus, the colors are so cute we don’t mind tossing one in our own bag, too.
Mornings are chaos, and pre-loading outfits for the week saves us from the “I can’t find my socks!” meltdown. The rainbow cubbies make it easy for kids to see what’s ready to go, and honestly, it makes the closet look way more organized than it actually is. Also comes in purple.
We use these to corral homework, library books, and random worksheets that always seem to vanish into the backpack abyss. The mesh makes it easy to see what’s inside, and the zippers keep everything contained so papers don’t end up crumpled at the bottom. Honestly, they’ve saved us from so many “lost homework” panics. Keep them at home, the car, or in their backpacks.
We stash these everywhere—backpacks, car cup holders, our own bags—because you know someone’s going to need a tissue at the worst possible time. The slim packs don’t take up space, and having extras around means fewer sleeve-wiping emergencies (for them…or us).
We love this one because it works as both a mini notebook and a doodle pad. Kids can take notes, then draw all over the erasable cover when they need a break—wipe it clean, and it’s ready to go again.

A backpack isn’t just another school supply. It’s the one item your kid uses every single day. It has to hold all the essentials (folders, lunch boxes, random treasures), survive being dropped, kicked, and squished on the bus, and still look cute enough that your kid actually wants to carry it. We rounded up the best backpacks for kids—from budget-friendly options to colorful picks and sleek, durable designs—so you can skip the endless scrolling and find one that’ll last all year (and maybe even into next).
Backpacks aren’t just for carrying books—they’re mini survival kits for kids (and parents). These top-rated picks nail the trifecta of durability, comfort, and style.

If there’s one thing we know to be true, it’s that kids will keep outgrowing their shoes, whether you get out to the store or not. If you’re anything like us, it feels like the very first thing that gets too small is a pair of kiddo’s shoes. How does that happen?! There’s actually a pretty good explanation (thanks, science!). From ages 1-3 years, kids need a new pair of shoes two to three times a year on average. For older kids, ages 3-10, twice a year. Babies’ feet can grow up to half a shoe size every two months until they hit the 15-month mark! Not only are their feet growing in size, but they’re also changing shape rapidly. No wonder we’re always on the hunt for new shoes!
In hopes of making shoe shopping easier, we’ve found some of the best shoes for kids, and all of them can be bought online. These kicks are from our favorite brands and retailers, so you’re sure to find the right pair for your growing little ones. And, if you’re looking for weather-appropriate shoes for kids, check out our favorite water shoes for kids and the best boots for kids.

Mark the new year with these adorable first day of school signs
While we didn’t have first day of school signs back in our day, we’re surprised it took us so long to figure out how great they are. Not only do they add a really cute element to your back-to-school photo ops, but they also help us keep our pictures straight (if you’ve gotten your pictures mixed up, you’re not the only one). Plus, who doesn’t love a good Instagram and Tinybeans moment? Additionally, with the popularity of these boards, you can easily snag one without having to rely too heavily on your DIY skills.
We definitely want to make sure that our kiddos’ privacy is protected, though. As this viral TikTok video points out, there’s a lot of information first day of school signs include. Of course, we all want to share our darling littles on their big day. But we’re making sure we keep the info on our signs limited. We also suggest double-checking your social media privacy settings. Or, keep using your Tinybeans app to safely and privately share your first day of school memories. These signs are perfect for them.

An easy way to cut down on disposable school gear is to invest in reusable items like water bottles. Another way to do this is through a healthy, fun lunch—whether it’s eaten at school, at home or at daycare. These bento boxes for kids are totally kid-approved and cute, with perfectly sized compartments for fruits, veggies and snacks. Keep reading to see our favorites for kids.
This design from Bentgo is the first stainless steel bento-style lunch box with leak-resistant technology. This means each container is contoured specifically to prevent leaks (goodbye fruit juices and other lunch liquids pooling at the bottom of their backpack). Each Bentgo Stainless has three food compartments, plus a removable silicone container. Choose from five colors and enjoy a five-year warranty.
These bento boxes for kids feature five spill-proof compartments including a sauce tray for packing lunches and snacks for school or daycare with ease. The two clip closures keep the bento box securely closed in transit but are easy for kids and toddlers to open. The fully removable top gives easy access to contents and has no hard plastic hinges that can pinch little fingers! The entire set, including utensils, is dishwasher safe for easy cleaning. The bottom tray and the inner tray lid are microwave safe, making it ideal both for hot and cold food.
Whether you’re feeding a little astronaut, a world traveler, or a cool kid, Yumbox’s fun designs have something for everyone. Their six-compartment original bento box allows you to pack small portions of your child’s favorite foods, including bite-sized sandwiches. And no need to worry about spills or messes with the leak-proof lid!
OmieLife’s brightly colored thermal bento boxes have two temperature zones for storing any type of food. The vacuum insulated stainless steel thermos is perfect for keeping hot foods, well, hot, while the double-walled tray keeps fruits and veggies crisp and fresh. And, with a wide rainbow of colors like Sunshine (yellow) and Purple Plum, this bento is a cheerful way to kick off the school year.
GrowBento by Miniware is customizable, fitting up to four removable silicone Silipods. Each Silipod comes with a top easy for little hands to uncover, and can easily freeze and heat purees (think dips or dressings, hummus or even hot soup). We love that the durable container is completely dishwasher safe (even the stainless steel outer) and is the perfect size for a kid's lunch bag.
Don't let the pricetag fool you. With five compartments to keep fruits, sandwiches, dips and more separate, this PlanetBox bento box is worth the investment. Its sturdy stainless steel construction means that it's free of BPA and other bad chemicals and will last for years. You can even personalize with colorful magnets!
Bentology’s six-piece bento set includes one outer box with five mix-and-match containers, each a healthy portion size. Three of the containers have snap-on lids for things like dressing or yogurt.
If you’re ever worried about your kiddo’s lunch spoiling, we suggest investing in the Bentgo Kids Chill. The removable tray, which sits just below the food container, will keep food cold until lunchtime. Put it into the freezer overnight and pop it into the lunchbox on days you want to keep food colder longer. The lunch box itself features four kid-sized compartments and an easy-open latch (best for kids three years old and up). The food tray is both microwave- and dishwasher-safe, and the entire container is made of BPA-free materials.
This nifty three-piece ECOlunchbox set makes it easy to keep lunchtime foods separate—and safe from squishing! Pack a healthy entree and two side dishes, or a set of snacks. The whole thing's modular, so you can always pull out the snack container and use it on its own, and made from 100% high-quality, food-grade stainless steel.
LEGO-loving kiddos will get a kick out of these stackable lunch kits from Rubbermaid! These colorful blocks include blue ice freezer packs that snap directly on the food containers and keep everything nice and chilled pre-lunchtime. Plus, they'll amp up your organization in no time at all!
Clever interlocking Whiskware™ Snack Packs are ideal for packing healthy snacks and lunches to go. Available in officially-licensed designs—featuring Marvel, DC, Star Wars and Harry Potter characters—these durable, stackable containers are the reusable snack packs your kids will love. Using Twist n’ Lock technology, the jars, lids and removable handle easily attach and detach, allowing customization of your ideal snack stack.
Perfect for toddlers and preschoolers starting school or daycare for the first, these three-compartment bento boxes from Kinsho come in a variety of colors, have leak-proof inserts (that aren’t removable), and even come with a spork.
Inspired by minimalist Japanese bento boxes, but with modern perks: BPA-free materials, chopsticks and cutlery set, and a safety guarantee for microwaves, dishwashers and freezers. Plus, BentoHeaven boxes come with notes so you can pack a special message with your kiddo's lunch!

Our favorite kids alarm clocks will help kick morning battles to the curb
Whether it’s a school day or the weekend, having a solid morning routine for the kids is crucial. Help them start the day off right with their very own kids alarm clock! We found awesome time-telling devices including the viral Hatch Rest Gen 2 and a LEGO alarm clock. Pick your favorite and then check out these make-ahead breakfasts to keep the morning chaos to a minimum.
Recommended by Baby Gear Lab, this toddler clock has all the bells and whistles of a sleep-training alarm clock. There are five colors: Blue for BedTime, Yellow for WakeTime, Cyan for NapTime, Green for FunTime, and Red for Thinking Time/Timeout. The faceplate can be swapped out for another fun design (sold separately), it plays white noise, music and bedtime stories and has a weekend wake time, parental controls, and more!
With seven different colors, eight different ring tones, and an LED display, this is a great alarm clock for kids learning how to sleep alone. The colors can be used to help kids know when it's okay to get out of bed, and the ring tones can be used for sleep support when kids are trying to fall asleep at night.
The name says it all. This all-in-one device from Hatch is your sound machine, your night light, and your sleep training alarm clock, so it'll take you from a newborn to a toddler who needs to learn when it's okay to get up. There's a toddler lock and it works with the Hatch Baby app via Bluetooth, so you can adjust the sound level, length of the sound, the brightness of light and more, all from the living room while baby sleeps. It even grows with your little one, so it's perfect for all stages!
Expect swaddles, sleepsacks, light and sound sleep aids with this Gro Clock, which shows your kids awake and sleep times with displays of sun (to indicate awake time) and moon and stars (to indicate when it's time to sleep). The clock features an adjustable screen brightness and the option to set two different wake-up times: one for the weekday/weekend and the other for nighttime/naptime.
Preschoolers can now tell time…to the beat! With two learning modes, Tock the Learning Clock from Learning Resources chimes in with dance party tunes for every right answer and also prompts kids to match the hands to a digital display of the time. Extra perks include a nightlight and “okay to wake” light if you need to make sure dance parties don’t kick off too early.
We're not sure what we like more about this alarm clock. The fact that it's an adorable puppy dog, that it has a hidden compartment so your kid can't mess with the settings, or that it's got both wake-up and a nap timer, which is perfect for weekends or days home from preschool. Set the time for when you want the green ball to light up, and watch your kid go from a too-early riser to a right-on-time tot.
Using fun colors and facial expressions, this all-in-one clock from Little Hippo does it all: sleep trainer, nightlight, alarm clock and sound machine. Available in arctic blue, blush pink, bright purple and new color tropical teal.
A fun face and the option of switching between digital and analog are just a few of the reasons why your kids will enjoy having Telly the Time Telling clock on their bedside table. There's also a quiz mode that asks little ones to move the hands to the time requested, and a digital display lights up at night to keep kiddos company.
This best-seller helps teach young kids about when it's okay to get out of bed. The 4.5" bedside clock glows green when it's okay to get up, a snooze option, a nap timer and fun animations. It's a snap for parents to program and the new version comes with a USB cord for homes equipped with USB wall plugs.
These friendly robots not only give kids a lesson in telling time—old school style—but the bright colors and geometric design are an easy way to add a stylish feature to your little one’s abode. They are also ideal for light sleepers because the clock operates without the usual tick-tock sound.
A little magic never hurts when it comes to the morning wake-up call. Made from soft silicone and plastic, the large digital display and easy-set buttons are perfect for kids who are just beginning to tell time. It features the time, day, month, and the face lights up in four different glowing colors.
