Every Autumn, our family makes a trek to southwest Michigan where we spend an afternoon apple picking. We usually bring home a trunk filled with apples! They keep well on our Chicago back porch as the days get cooler, and they wind up in lunchboxes, pies, salads, muffins, cakes...just about everything! We like Jollay Orchards in Columa, Michigan. Another must-do in Autumn for our family is a trip to the Graue Mill in Oakbrook, where we watch how cornmeal is made using the grist mill. We enjoy a lovely hike along the trail from the mill to the Fullersburg Nature Center when the fall colors are in bloom, We never leave without a few bags of cornmeal, which we use to make cornbread for our Thanksgiving dinner.
