Raise your hand if you remember being a young girl, begging almost daily to get your ears pierced. Oh how those faux birthstones embedded in gold-like circle shells beckoned…that is, until you saw the piercing gun. One dad’s viral post about consent and kids may just make you tear up—and stand up and cheer for this with-it dad.
Newly 8-year-old Adelaide Baker was super-excited to get her ears pierced. According to dad, Adam, the little girl had been looking forward to this momentous piercing day. Baker told Babble, “She frequently asked for details about the process, and we spent a lot of time watching Youtube videos of 8-year-olds getting their ears pierced.”

But when it came down to the actual act, Adelaide wasn’t sure about was about to happen. Baker said that his daughter started to apologize, “I’m sorry, but I don’t want to do it.”
Baker later wrote, on his Facebook page, “But, beloved, there is no apology necessary. You alone get to determine what anyone else does to your body. The birthday girl may be leaving the shop today without new earrings, but there’s a reason that she’s kept saying, again and again, “Thank you for understanding”. Her voice has been heard. Her choice has been honored. Her body is her own, and she knows that those who love her will respect her choices.”
Now that’s a lesson of a lifetime!
