ASAP Sitters—your Totally Awesome pick for best childcare resource in D.C—is all about setting high standards for childcare. To ensure the best fit for your family, the company finds, screens, and interviews each of its caregivers from among a lineup of child care workers, teachers, college students, and others in related fields. Founder Ewa Harr recently took the time to chat with us about what makes ASAP Sitters awesome, the inspiration behind her business, and more. Read on:

Red Tricycle: Congratulations! Your community recently voted you “Most Awesome.” What do you think your customers value most about your business?

Ewa Harr: We received an email from one of our moms just the other day saying, “you save me so much time and send me such reliable professionals, thank you.” I think those two things are what most families look for when they join ASAP Sitters—outstanding, reliable, pre-screened babysitters whenever they need them. Much of our success is thanks to the amazing and hardworking sitters that we refer to our families.

RT: What inspired you to start your business?

EW: I started ASAP Sitters when I became a mom. I realized how difficult it was to find a great sitter when you need one. My professional background included working with children and families as a therapist and teacher, so I wanted to use the experience I had to create a specialized service for families needing occasional childcare. There are a lot of locally based nanny services, but not services focused on families that need a sitter a few times a month or perhaps when their nanny goes on vacation. It’s not easy to find highly qualified, experienced, and professional sitters—many moms and dads can attest to that!—so that is where ASAP Sitters comes in.

RT: Any advice for new business owners just getting started?

EW: I am so grateful to the Small Business Development Center at George Mason University. Their mentors have been a source of inspiration, wisdom, experience and encouragement. If you are starting your own small business, find your local SBDC! They are there to help.

RT: Can you give us one tip for balancing entrepreneurship with parenthood?

EW: Do what makes you happy. Don’t forget to laugh. And hug your children. I really like this quote from John Lennon: “When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.”

RT: Is there a special offer you’d like to include for Red Tricycle readers?

EW: Yes! 10% off Registration.
