Hacks to Stay Cool Without AC

Trending Now

Summer has arrived and with it sweltering heat, but that doesn’t mean you have to cry over overheated kids that can’t (or won’t) go to sleep. There are some simple hacks you can try to beat heat on summer nights even if you don’t have AC, or you’re just trying to cut down on energy consumption.

Choose Cotton
While those Emoji-adorned pajamas and bedsheets are totally awesome, often times they only come in polyester, which doesn’t breathe as well as cotton. Trade them in for some blander, but much more well-ventilated, cotton alternatives.

Ice, Ice Baby
Bring your freezer into the bedroom by slipping an icepack between your sheets to cool them down before bedtime. Another option is to stick your sheets in the freezer for a few minutes, just make sure to place them in a ziplock bag to avoid that gross freezer smell taking over the bed.

Put The Fans to Work
Set up box fans in windows, but face them out instead of in, to force the hot air out. Another option is to place a fan directly across from an open window to create a cross breeze without having to leave your doors open.

Get Low
Heat naturally rises, so if your bedrooms are on the second floor you might consider having a sleepover on the first floor instead. Even if you’re in a one-story house, skipping the bunkbeds and loft beds in favor of sleeping down low can make a difference.

Camp Out
Heat gets trapped indoors after a long summer day and can leave your house much hotter than being outside once the sun goes down. Pop a tent, break out your best campfire stories and have a camp out in your own backyard.
