The New “Doctor Who” Is the Best New Kind of Superhero for Any Kid

Trending Now

Despite living in the age of Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel, strong female superheroes are still few and far between—but maybe we just need to look in more unconventional places. Jodie Whittaker as the first female Doctor in Doctor Who is history in the making—and she could just be the new kind of female superhero kids need.

The new season of Britain’s longest-running sci-fi series’ tagline nails it: “It’s about time”—and it certainly is! The first female Doctor in over 50 years has broken a huge barriers and is sure to inspire a whole new generation of fans. The first full trailer for the 11th series of Doctor Who has landed and it’s already proving that women were born to be heroes.

While the content and nature of Doctor Who makes it a series best-suited to older kids, the show delivers some great messages illustrating team-work, problem solving and even highlighting the fun of STEM in a way that audiences can understand and appreciate.

The show’s hero has also always been presented in a relatable way, but now as a female, the character has become even more universal. Despite being a hero, the Doctor is well aware of his—and now her—flaws and shortcomings. “I’m the Doctor,” Whittaker says proudly in the series 11 trailer. “When people need help, I never refuse.”

Often times the superheroes that grace the big screen are too supernatural in their abilities, but that’s not the often case with this show. The Doctor is smart and compassionate, and her biggest superpower has been the ability to travel through time—but only with the help of her spaceship known as the T.A.R.D.I.S.

The choice to cast the first female Doctor with Jodie Whittaker is already broadening the audience for this great series with girls, like this young fan at this year’s Comic-Con, gaining inspiration from a new role model.

We can’t wait to see all the heroic stories Whittaker will bring to life in her new role as the Doctor.
