They’re not quite an extra pair of hands, but these are some of the best baby gadgets that make it all so much easier!

In the world of parenting, some things are evergreen. Fed is best. Shushing sounds are soothing. The food that they love one week they’ll despise the next. You know, the usual. There are just universal parenting truths that we don’t see changing anytime soon. But with advances in science, discoveries in psychology, and strides in medicine, there’s bound to be a few changes. Or, as we call them: improvements. Baby tech made all the difference for us moms and we’ll tell you: we’re huge fans. But we’ll also admit, especially when there are so many new and unique options, it can be tricky to find the best baby gadgets.

Some of these products we’re betting you’ve never even seen before or knew existed! They’re truly brilliant tools that make mom-ing so much easier. Who knows which baby bath toys are the best better than other parents (who have actually used them)?

Bathtime is one of our favorite times to bond with our little ones. It’s usually at the end of the day, after dinner adventures and before bed, so it’s just the kind of wind-down we and our kiddos need. Warm water, bubbles, and splashing (sometimes lots of splashing)—what more could you ask for? Oh, and as a bonus, it’s the perfect time for playing. Which of course means we’re on the hunt for the best baby bath toys.

Bath toys are especially fun because they offer littles a chance to experience different textures and ways to play. Plus, gone are the days of only rubber ducks and boats (though we love those!); there are so many awesome toys to choose from, specifically designed for the bath. But you don’t have to take our word for it! These are the top Amazon toys, according to reviewers. Sure, there are rubber duckies and boats, but there’s also blocks, and balls, and baby bath squirt toys, so you’re sure to find something (or somethings) that’s perfect for your little babes. We’ve got the baby bath toys parents are loving right here!

Duck Tubing Floating Bath Toys

Three connecting tubes, three rubber ducks, and a mold-free design! These ducks are ready to play.

Amazon Review:  I wanted some floating bath ducks that weren't “squirters” so that they wouldn’t mold. These are a nice size (bigger than expected), good quality, and super cute! My girls love to also put other bath toys on the “duck train”. -BrookeMarie

KaledioCubes Stack & Squeeze Blocks

This 9-pack of blocks are brightly colored and covered with letters and numbers, so they'll grow with your babes!

Amazon Review: After screening numerous baby block listings (many of which claim to be hole/mold-free but are not), I was thrilled to finally discover a truly hole-free set. I have cleaned these blocks in the dishwasher (top rack) several times, so far without issue. I look forward to using them as bath toys and not having to worry about mold growth. -K.Cox

Green Toys Paddle Boat and Tugboat Combo

Boats are a classic bath toy, and this set from Green Toys have little pour spouts and don't have any BPA!

Amazon Review: As always green toys remains one of our favorites. They're great size and usually bigger than expected. They're made of recycled materials which is another plus and I can't say enough about the durability of these toys. They can get tossed around and still look great. The paddles on the boat really move and there's a spout on them both that you can pour water out of. -Tiffany Sprouse

Munchkin Bath Numbers & Letters

36 floating letters and numbers in bright, kid-friendly colors!

Amazon Review: My 18 month old loves these, the first set I bought, he had thrown them all over the house and I couldn't find most of them lol, I bought a 2nd set and keep it in with his bath toys. These suction really well to my tile bath wall. When he bites on them, they do leave teeth marks that will not come out. Also the set only includes 1 of each letter and number so spelling anything isn't really possible if you need more than 1 of the same letter lol. All in all, these are decent for the price. They are pretty sturdy and haven't ripped, so you don't have to worry about you kid boring a chunk out of one. -Brandie L.

Munchkin Bath Numbers & Letters ($5.95)—Buy Now

Munchkin Float & Play Bubbles

This set includes 2 fun ocean friends and two twirly rattles. The characters move freely around the bubbles, and the textured rings float!

Amazon Review: So I’m a stickler for bath toys without holes in them. I didn’t know so well for my first child who is now almost 13….. but I learned over time with my others. I bought these for my 8 month old as he’s into little noises and things for bath since he’s sitting up. When I got these they didn’t even make it into the bath for the first few weeks, he sat playing with them on the floor with his toys and loved them as is! They are perfect size, the rattle noise inside isn’t loud and obnoxious it’s actually kind of a lull soothing noise, the objects inside keep him entertained even still. Now that they’ve been in the bath, they haven’t leaked any water in, they float well and are fun! Happy I bought these. -Erica Mara

Munchkin Float & Play Bubbles ($9.39)—Buy Now

Munchkin Arctic Polar Bear

He's going fishing and your little one can help! The floating polar bear holds 4 fish rings on each leg.

Amazon Review: This is larger than I thought it would be, in a good way! It’s very durable and the rings are large enough to not be a choking hazard for smaller children. I love that water can’t get into the toy and mold. I wasn’t going to review this, but it impressed me! -108

Blue's Clues Bath Squirters

The gang's all here! Blue, Magenta, and Slippery Soap are ready for bathtime.

Amazon Review: They don’t hold water so no stress about mold!! They are great bath toys! -Corey Diesz

Cloud & Droplet Silicon Bath Toys

You can open and close these cute toys for easy cleaning, plus they're ergonomically designed for little baby hands!

Amazon Review: I purchased these in a high-end shop while on withy husband. I was pumped to find the exact same product on Amazon and purchased a second set. My kids LOVE taking a warm "tub" nightly. So, these are used daily. We are going on a year and we have not had any problems with mold. I love that they are dishwasher safe. I throw them in the dishwasher once a month or so (I have always done this with bath toys). Honestly, I bet I could go longer, they never look or smell dirty. We did have one go missing and found it a few months later sitting in some standing water left in the pool out back, that did mold. So, unless you're not planning on draining your tub at all ever you should have nothing to worry about. This is a wonderful bath toy! -Huntington

Dive Gems Toys

This 12-piece set is colorful and smooth, plus older kids will love them for the pool!

21 Baby & Toddler Feeding Tools & Tips You Need

Her Hollywood career and The Honest Company empire may be next-level, but many of the things Jessica Alba is dealing with on the daily (think: two out of three kids at home distance learning, a home that sometimes feels like it’s overtaken by toys and finding time for self care) are all too relatable. We spoke with Jessica mom-to-mom as she revealed her gift picks, her family’s holiday traditions and the no-fail hack that makes dinner cleanup a breeze. Read on for some of the highlights from our conversation.

The best holiday gift she’s ever received:
Definitely pictures that my kids have drawn for me. Cards that they’ve customized for me and my husband had some really nice personal gifts made. The best ones have been when they’re really personal and handmade by the fam.

Jessica’s favorite items to give pregnant women or new moms:
The Sweet Mama Gift Set (pictured above). It’s great because it gives mom the self-care vibe. We have beauty products and products for the body in there. It’s the ultimate pampering gift for a new mom or for someone who’s pregnant.

The most memorable parenting advice that’s actually stuck with her:
Letting go of perfection and letting go of how things were before you had kids. You have to understand that there’s no right way to do it. As long as you can survive to see another day you’ve won. I had all these ideas of how my life was going to be even when I had my kids. It all really just went out the door when you’re in survival mode—when taking a shower or making a meal and eating it instead of eating your kids scraps is a luxury.

Another piece of advice is that my house just looked like kids exploded into all of the spaces so finding baskets to put things in helped and a playroom where they can have their chaos in has been great. I can shove things in a playroom instead of letting it take over the whole house.

Basically, letting go of some of the things I thought my life was going to be. And, I’ll say that it’s much easier with one kid. It’s night and day. Good luck being your version of organized or clean in the same way with two or three kids!

The Honest products Jessica is most excited to gift this year:
All of the different curated kits. Even Honor and Haven put together some kits of their favorite stuff. I have my night time routine and being able to curate these moments and have that available for people to purchase straight away is amazing.

We’re on the go and during COVID we have masks and they match back to the diapers. We have a pattern called Ya Herd?!, and mom and me and dad and me masks, and diapers. We bring it all together during the holidays with thematic prints.

Jessica’s family’s holiday traditions:
I have a pretty big family and we do a sit-down dinner with 70-80 people for Christmas every year (obviously we aren’t going to be doing that this year). It’s always been that way because our extended family lives in Southern California. The kids love it. When I was growing up we were sitting on the floor eating off of styrofoam plates but it was still that many people. My husband’s family tradition is that you sit at a table and say grace and it’s a bit more formal. So we combined both of our family’s traditions and it’ll be fun to do that in normal years.

I got my way last year and I got a tree that’s really chic. The kids called it a large Charlie Brown tree. This year we’re doing a fluffy tree. The kids like the tree thing with the scent and all of that. We’ll be doing our normal Christmas decorating—it’s a big deal for the kids and we’ll do it all sooner than we normally do.

Jessica’s must-have Honest Beauty products that should be on every tired mom’s holiday wish list:
Honestly Bright Eyes Tinted Eye Cream. It comes in two colors and it has pigments so it counters your circles under your eyes and it’s the most life changing thing ever. You also need a cream blush just because you’ll look flushed and healthy. You also need the Gloss-C Lip Gloss—it’s just a lip treatment and gloss all-in-one. You can get it with no color at all or you can have a little bit of a color, which I think always helps make you look more awake. I do a mask every morning called Prime + Perfect Mask which is like a smoothie on your face. It smells really good and gets your face awake and ready for the day. These products make your skin look hydrated but not oily.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CGYUW-7jMzC/

Jessica’s advice for female entrepreneurs looking to start their own business:
Just having a good idea for a product is probably 30% of it and 70% of it is execution. And it’s really helpful to not be so attached to the idea of what you think it’s going to be. Be open to making mistakes, learning from your mistakes and keeping it moving. Trusting your gut and surrounding yourself with people who have strengths where you have weaknesses. And you really have to understand your business inside and out. You have to understand the business because you’ll be either taken advantage of or people won’t feel good about investing in you if you don’t understand your own business model. You have to understand the white space or the opportunity you’re going after. And, when you run into issues you need to learn from them, move on and not let them paralyze you.

What Honor and Haven’s homeschooling setup looks like:
I got them desks so they each have a desk in their room now. My kids are horrified if I’m walking in while they’re in school zoom. They have to have their cameras on, they have to be on mute and they have to participate.

Jessica’s favorite parenting hacks:
I made self care something my girls wanted to be a part of. When I was doing self care and they weren’t a part of the situation then they were constantly bothering me during my “me” time. So I said, during COVID we are all going to do baths together and it’s going to be fun and they started to get into it. So we’re all doing self care and Hayes’ little baby bath will be next to ours. Instead of not doing my self care at all, I incorporated the kids into this.

Prior to COVID, I pick out the kids clothes and my clothes the night before so we aren’t screaming to figure out what we’re going to wear. Everything from the underwear to the socks are laid out on the bed ready to go. So I’m not thinking about what we need to wear so there are no freak outs and we can get out the door that much faster.

Lastly, my husband got a timer so after mealtime we set a timer for 5 minutes and they see how quickly they can clear the table and wash all the food off the dishes. We started at 10 minutes but we got it down to 5 minutes. You can do it for breakfast, lunch or dinner. We figured out how to make it a competition and make it fun.

10 Quick, Easy Self-Care Tips

Advice to New Moms from Moms Who’ve Been There

In-the-know travelers have discovered Portugal as a family vacation destination full of picturesque coastline, history and amazing dining opportunities. We spent a week in Lisbon and the coastal town of Cascais and have a number of tips on how to make the most of your stay in this corner of Portugal. From must-take tours to the ultimate family-friendly resorts, leave the Portugal planning to us!

1. Put Lisbon on your list.

Kate Loweth

We love Lisbon as a destination for families because it is super easy to navigate without having to rent a car. The city is built on seven hills so things can get a little steep, but the streetcars are plentiful, inexpensive and easy to navigate. Kids will love them not only as a way to avoid walking but as an adventure on their own. Board them at the beginning of the line and you can nab a window seat to tour the city.

2. Taste the culture with Eating Europe.

Kate Loweth

A great way to get to know a new country is by experiencing its food through a food tour. We love the Eats, Street Art and Undiscovered Lisbon tour that is offered by Eating Europe, especially for families with older kids and adventurous eaters. The tour takes you through the neighborhoods of Baixa and Mouraria to taste local favorites like codfish salad, dumplings from Mozambique and fried sardines. You'll learn that codfish is the national dish of Portugal despite the fact that codfish isn't from Portugal.

Along the way you'll see the street art throughout the area and learn lots about the history of the city. Other highlights include a traditional fado performance and a visit to a medieval church that survived the great earthquake of 1755. Save room as the tour ends with a stop to try warm-out-of-the-oven pastel de nata—the custard tarts you will see all over Lisbon.

We recommend booking this tour early in your Lisbon visit. The information gained from your knowledgeable tour guide is invaluable and you'll want to make full use of his advice for the duration of your stay.

3. Make Martinhal Chiado your Lisbon home base.

Kate Loweth

You may have been to properties that deem themselves "family-friendly" but the Martinhal properties take this to a whole new level. Martinhal Chiado is the world's first luxury family hotel in a city center and it is the ideal spot to stay with your family in Lisbon.

In addition to thoughtful in-room amenities like step stools and high chairs, all of the rooms here are apartment-style with kitchens and a washer-dryer combo. Even larger families can feel at home here with two-bedroom suites available that include a room that sleeps four kids in bunk beds!  Need a baby bath, diapers or bottle warmers? The Baby Concierge is available to provide these items to you for your stay.

Kate Loweth

It really is all about the kids at Martinhal Chiado (sorry, parents!). They have an incredible kids club program that covers ages six months and up. Kids can visit the kids club from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and there no additional cost, it's all included in the room charge. A special "pajama club" offers childcare services (for an additional fee) until 10 p.m. each evening, allowing parents to enjoy a night out in Lisbon.

Breakfast is pajamas-optional at Martinhal Chiado and included with your stay at the downstairs MBar. The plentiful buffet includes local specialties like pastel de nata, and warm dishes like pancakes and omelettes are available. Cereal, fruit, toast and croissants provide lots of kid-friendly options. Order breakfast delivered to your room or reserve a to-go box if you have an early morning flight.

Rates at Martinhal Chiado start at €178 for the Deluxe Studio.

4. Head to Cascais for the ultimate coastal vibes.

Kate Loweth

Just a 40-minute drive or short train ride from Lisbon is the coastal town of Cascais where you can breathe the ocean air and spend some time at the beach. It's a great addition to your Lisbon visit as it gives you a different glimpse of Portuguese life. Walk along the cliffs and stop for lunch at the many cafes offering ocean views. Along your walk into town, visit the Boca do Inferno or "Hell's Mouth" to see the crashing sea. Locals recommend Guincho Beach for those looking for sand and surf.

5. Relax in style at Martinhal Cascais.

Kate Loweth

Like the Lisbon property, Martinhal Cascais is all about families. From Deluxe rooms that include bunk beds for the kids, to two-bedroom villas that come complete with full kitchens and sleep up to six, there's definitely room for your crew to spread out here. The property is located in a quiet neighborhood above the rocky coast of Cascais and you can borrow bikes from the on-site Bike Station to explore the area.

Those looking for some pampering can book some time at the property's Finisterra Spa where parent-child manicures and massages are available. After your treatments, relax in the indoor/outdoor pool and sauna. We love the resort's family-focus with the elegant sophistication of a luxury resort.

Kate Loweth

Martinhal Cascais has a Kids Clubhouse unlike any you've ever seen, with over 7,700 square feet of play space and spacious outdoor playgrounds for children. Free supervised sessions are available for kids ages 19 months through age 9 to allow parents to enjoy meals on their own or take day-trips to nearby towns. Infants receive free time in the baby room from November through March, with services available for a fee during the remaining months.

Beyond the indoor clubhouse, there is a massive green space for kids to run around and play. A trampoline, zipline and sand pit are highlights. Families gather for soccer games and the property is more than happy to create programs for teens and tweens in your family. Three pools make it easy to spend your time relaxing.

Families can enjoy meals at the two on-site restaurants, both of which have a play area corner where staff members are available to supervise kids who finish their meal early so that parents can enjoy their cappuccino with the foam still on it. Brilliant! In addition to kids menu items, little foodies can older smaller portions off the adult menu if there's something there they'd like to try.

Rates start at €187 for the Deluxe room.

6. Bring home recipes as souvenirs with Traveling Spoon.

Kate Loweth

If you are looking to create some amazing family memories of your time in Portugal, then book a culinary experience with Traveling Spoon. Traveling Spoon finds and vets talented home cooks throughout the world who will host you and your family on market tours, cooking experiences and in-home meals. Kids will love seeing what foods are popular in Portugal, how codfish is salted and stored outside of the refrigerator and how families like yours eat on special occasions.

Paulinha Sousa

We were lucky enough to experience a market tour and cooking experience with Paulinha, a talented cook specializing in Portuguese and Goan-influenced cuisine. The day started with a short ferry ride from Lisbon to Almada and then a market tour where sardines, olives and citrus were plentiful. The cooking experience happened in Paulinha's cooking studio where she also bakes intricate cakes for locals.

Families will enjoy being put to work in the kitchen making Goan gram flour fritters made with onion and cumin seeds and bacalhau a braz, a traditional Portuguese dish of cod with shredded potatoes and hard boiled eggs. There's something about the tactile nature of cooking and smelling all of the spices that will make this a truly memorable experience, especially for kids.

Once your meal is cooked, enjoy the fruits of your labor with Paulinha as she waves to the locals walking by her storefront. Immersing yourself in the local neighborhood life will give your family a literal taste of what it's like to be a family in Portugal. Bring home the memories of this experience and relive it by recreating the dishes you cooked at home.

Epic International Adventures Worth Taking with Kids

Set your sights southward and pencil in your next family vacation in La Paz, Mexico. Located in Baja California Sur, La Paz offers year-round warm weather, animal encounters around every corner and some of the best fish tacos you’ve ever tasted. Read on for tips on where to stay and play in this cozy corner of Mexico.

Getting There

Flights into San Jose del Cabo are plentiful from the U.S. When you arrive, rent a car at the airport to give you tons of freedom to explore the area, or grab a shuttle from the airport to La Paz if you’d rather not drive. It will take you about two hours to get to La Paz from San Jose del Cabo.

Southern California families can take advantage of direct flights into La Paz when using the Cross Border Xpress (CBX). With the CBX you can park in San Diego and cross the border into Mexico via a bridge into the Tijuana International Airport. This border crossing requires a ticket which costs $30/person round trip (there are discounts for family members traveling together). Once you cross the border, domestic flights from Tijuana to La Paz are plentiful, inexpensive and include luggage (ideal if you are flying with golf clubs or fishing gear).

Play in La Paz

When planning your La Paz getaway you may be surprised to learn that there are no all-inclusive hotels there, a stark contrast to La Paz’s cousin to the south, Cabo San Lucus. The reason is simple: prohibiting all-inclusive properties means that visitors to La Paz are encouraged to leave their hotel property to truly explore all of the outdoor adventure that the area offers.

Head to downtown La Paz and stroll along the Malecón. This five-kilometer waterfront promenade draws families playing in the sand, strolling sweethearts and exercising locals. Admire the many sculptures along the way that tell the story of La Paz, from romping dolphins to the giant pearl—a nod to the area’s pearl trade history. Spread out a picnic blanket under one of the thatched-roof palapas that line the sand while the kids play in the nautical-themed playground nearby.

As you stroll around town in search of a cafe or lunch spot, you’ll undoubtedly encounter the gorgeous murals that cover many of the buildings. In early 2017, a collective of artists descended on La Paz as part of Ciudad Mural La Paz, a community project to bring color to the community spaces. The artists researched the town through meetings with local community organizations and incorporated the city’s marine preservation history into their artistic designs.

Where to Eat

One thing’s for sure, there’s no shortage of excellent dining establishments in downtown La Paz. A rustic favorite is Rancho Viejo where the taco is king. With two locations to choose from, opt for the one on the Malecón for views of the ocean or the second location which is literally open 24/7. Try the patata rellena if you are looking for a non-taco option.

Ask any local about the late-night favorite food of La Paz and you’ll be surprised to learn that it involves a hot dog and not a taco! Hates (pronounced “ha-tays”) are the street food of the town and locals are fiercely opinionated about which stand makes the best hates. This tasty treat features sausages that are wrapped in bacon, grilled on the flat top, put on a steamed bun and topped with grilled onions, mayo/cream mixture, mustard, peppers and more.

Beaches

Some of the most gorgeous white sand beaches can be found in and around La Paz. Playa Balandra is a local favorite made famous by “El Hongo,” a rock formation said to look like a mushroom. Calm waters, plenty of beach and shallow waters make this the perfect spot for a family day in the sun. Rent kayaks from vendors on the beach and enjoy ice-cold coconuts sold in the parking lot.

Animal Encounters

Located on the Sea of Cortez, this area was dubbed “the world’s aquarium” by Jacques Cousteau due to it’s plentiful marine life. Bonus, Baja California Sur is super narrow so you also have access to the Pacific side of the peninsula and double the opportunities for animal encounters.

Leave the planning up to the experts at Maar Experiences and book one of their whale shark, gray whale or sea lion experiences. From pick up at your hotel to stops along the way to experience dining at local ranches, everything will be planned for you. Gray whale viewing is best from January through March and takes place in Magdalena Bay, about a 3.5 hour drive from La Paz. Small boats head out to find these massive creatures who come to the warm waters of the bay to give birth. Stop for a delicious seafood lunch before being returned to your hotel.

If you have a dream to get into the water with some massive sea creatures, La Paz is the place for you. Tours leave from La Paz to head to nearby Isla Espiritu Santu to swim with playful sea lions and massive whale sharks. While floatation devices are available, kids need to be good swimmers to make the most of these in-water tours. Friendly guides swim along with you and will take photos and GoPro videos so you can show off your adventure to friends at home.

Families looking for immersive experiences can look into the various tours offered by RED Travel Mexico and Todos Santos Eco Adventures. With different themes like sea turtle ecology and whale shark research, families can get an even deeper understanding of these local creatures and memories to last a lifetime.

Nearby Adventures

The quaint town of Todos Santos, located in between Cabo and La Paz, is a “Pueblo Magico” or magical town that’s worth a day trip. Recognized for its cultural and historical significance, visitors will enjoy walking the cobblestone streets to shop for Talavera pottery and exploring the town’s mission. Rent a bike from one of the local bike shops to explore the area on two wheels and then eat at one of the many restaurants. Our favorite is La Casita Tapas and Wine Bar—offering fresh seafood dishes, local beef and vegetables grown in the restaurant’s garden out back, all with an international flair courtesy of Chef Sergio Rivera’s many travels.

For a taste of the area’s long mining history, head to the mountain town of El Triunfo. The Museo Ruta de Plata is the best place to start. Watch the short informational video in the interpretive center to learn how this was once one of the most populated areas of Baja California. Kids will like the interactive museum where they can simulate an explosion in a mine and learn interesting facts about mining life. Walk a short distance to view La Romana, the massive chimney that local lore says was built by Gustave Eiffel (although there is no proof of this), and then head up the hillside to view the town from above.

Hungry travelers should definitely grab a meal at Bar El Minero, located in the courtyard of the museum. Try the mixed platter of house-made sausages, bread, cheeses and condiments, followed by a root beer float.

Where to Stay

For a resort that offers loads of amenities for families and a gorgeous beach setting, the CostaBaja Resort and Spa is the ideal location for your La Paz vacation. Just a five minute drive from downtown La Paz, the resort is located on an exclusive marina with its own beach access. Spend your days lounging by the pool with swim-up bar, or walk down to get some time in the sand.

Families can request special amenities like a baby bath tub and step stool for little ones to make their stay more comfortable. The Super Suite is perfectly sized to accommodate families and offers the best sunset views on the property from the room’s massive deck. On-site restaurants, shuttle service into La Paz and access to the CostaBaja Beach Club make this an excellent choice for vacationing families.

Good to Know

  • At most locations in and around La Paz, you can use either U.S. dollars or Mexican pesos. However, if you pay with dollars, your change will always be in pesos.
  • La Paz is on mountain standard time.
  • La Paz uses the same outlets as the U.S., so no need to bring electrical adaptors.

Sure, you want all the cute baby gadgets, outfits and other goodies. But do you and your baby really need them? Nope. Here are 15 baby products that moms agree you can leave off your registry, or at least wait to buy until you’re sure they’re something that will make your life better.

photo: Shaun Versey via Flicker

1. Newborn Shoes
When was the last time you saw a newborn baby strutting around in a brand-new pair of teeny tiny Converse? Yes, they’re beyond adorable, but after you spend 20 minutes shoving little toes into newborn baby shoes, you get to watch them get kicked off. Baby socks or footie PJs are way more practical and still super cute.

2. Lots of Fancy & Expensive Outfits
Sure, buying one or two stylish pieces for the going-home outfit or another special event can be worth it. But you’ll likely be hanging out at home for the first few weeks, so onesies and sleepers are more practical. Plus, baby duds get messy and clothes have a lifespan of about 15 minutes, so your money is better spent on other items.

3. Baby Detergent
You’ll be doing a lot of laundry once baby comes, and you don’t need to keep baby’s laundry separate to be cleaned with a special (and usually expensive) detergent. Buy a fragrance-free, dye-free detergent (look for “free and clear” on the label) and use it for the whole family’s wash.

photo: heymattallen via Pixabay

4. Changing Table
A changing table is just another piece of furniture to get rid of once your child is out of diapers. If space is tight, you can get by with just a travel changing pad. Or, if you have a dresser in the nursery, fasten a changing pad to the top for a makeshift changing table.

5. Nursing Cover
Cover up if you want, but don’t bother with a nursing cover. A thin baby blanket or a scarf do the same job, and you may be bringing them with you already, so skipping the nursing cover means one less thing to pack in a diaper bag or stroller.

6. Bottle Sterilizers
Good old (fragrance-free organic) dishwashing soap and water does the trick to clean dirty bottles and pacifiers. Or join the club of parents who throw it all in the dishwasher at the end of the day. Ta-da! Washed and sterilized!

7. Educational Videos
Your baby doesn’t need to be entertained by videos promising to make them smart. The best form of entertainment for your baby is you. They love staring at your face, hearing your voice (yes, even your singing) and being close to you. Wearing your baby in a wrap, chatting with them and taking them on daily errands will likely make them more than content.

8. Hooded Baby Towels
Another super-cute item that is not essential. They look adorable, but your regular towels do the exact same job. Just save your softest towels for baby’s sensitive skin.

9. Baby Food Processors
The last time we checked, your regular food processor did the same thing as that fancy baby-food one out on the market. Besides, what happened to just smashing a banana with a fork? It’s also easy to make baby food with a blender. Or, give baby led weaning a try. No extra baby-specific gadgets required.

10. Gadgets That Monitor Baby’s Every Move
Monitors are great, yes. But monitors that keep track of your baby’s every poop, movement, hope and dream? That’s a little bit unnecessary when a simple sound or video monitor will keep tabs on your baby quite well. The elaborate monitoring gadgets are great for peace of mind, but they also have the potential to turn you into a nervous nelly or give you a false sense of security.

11. Pee Pee Teepee
Yes folks, this is a real thing. It’s a cone to protect you from your little man during diaper changes. Except the little guy wiggles and giggles so much, how does the teepee even stay on? And you certainly don’t need another item to throw in the laundry at the end of the day!

12. Gimmicky Gadgets
Don’t get caught up in all the products that claim they’ll fix every little parenting problem. We promise you don’t really need a baby bath visor to steer water clear of eyes while you rinse baby’s hair (use your hand), a special sleep hat that folds down over baby’s eyes when it’s time for a nap (try blackout shades), a wipes warmer (just another thing taking up space) or a baby walking harness that helps you hold up tots learning to walk. They’ll figure out that walking thing when they’re ready.

13. Expensive and Fussy Bedding
It’s gorgeous and stunning and finishes off the nursery just so. But that bedding is also getting peed and spit up on frequently. A simple, soft fitted crib sheet will do the trick. Bedtime is safest without extra blankets, bumpers and pillows anyway.

photo: Tabitha Blue via Flickr

14. Stuffies
You can’t put stuffed animals in the crib until babies are much older (read up on safe sleep guidelines). And newborns won’t even pay any attention to them. You might as well save yourself the room in your home now because, one day, your baby will grow into a toddler and your house will be filled with stuffies.

15. Baby Spa Tub
The bubbling whirlpool action and shower stream may sound decadent, but most new parents are just trying to keep their newborn’s head above water. Save the spa ritual for mommy time.

Bonus Tip: All babies are different, with specific preferences and needs, so buy the essentials and then wait to get to know your little one before you stock up on too many swaddles, pacifiers, diapers and other items that may not suit them.

Consignment Shops

Get the most bang for your buck at some of the area consignment shops, where you can find gently used items for a fraction of the cost. Most baby items are used for such a brief window of time, you’ll find like-new options for many of the items on your friends’ wish list. Or check out Smallfry for gently used items for both mama and baby. Check out even more great spots here.

Pamper the Parents

Pay some special attention to the doting parents by supporting them those first few blurry weeks. Local spas will give a tired mother some much needed pampering, like at Zenana Spa or Veda Collective. Or give an extra give of love, like a few hours of needed sleep, a pair of extra hands, or some light housekeeping from Doula Love or Mother Tree. Consider these options as well.

After all that, don’t forget the classics—get that humidifier or the diapers they asked for on their registry, bring over a bag of groceries or hot meal, or swing by and hold the baby so they can take some showers.

12 Innovative Baby Bathtubs to Make Bathing a Breeze

This Is How to Keep Your Baby Safe During Bath Time

Rub-a-Dub-Dub: 14 Top Toys for Babies in the Tub

January is National Bath Safety Month, so now is a good time for a few tips on keeping baby safe in the bathtub. Babies are wiggly little people. They don’t follow instructions and when they’re all wet, they become slippery, wiggly little people! Not all babies love baths, but most do and as long as you follow a few rules for tub time, you will too.

Sponge bathing is the right place to begin

There is a lot to be said for a good sponge bath for newborns. After all, they don’t have the ability to regulate their body temperatures very well so a full immersion might be more than they can handle! Sponge bathing allows you to keep baby warm with towels and only wash the parts that need it: face, diaper area, and hands.

Full immersion isn’t recommended until the umbilical cord stump falls off anyway, as it is best to keep that area dry to avoid complications like infection. Wait the week or two it will take for the stump to dry up and fall off before considering a full bath for baby.

Moving on to a baby bath is your next step

When you and baby are ready to move beyond sponge bathing, the next best bet is a baby sized bath. Whether you put a baby bath in the tub or go directly to the kitchen sink, choose a warm environment and make sure that you can can stand or sit comfortably. Attempting to get the baby out of the bath if you’re awkwardly positioned could be dangerous! Remember: slippery and wiggly!

Babies don’t need a daily bath; in fact, too many baths can dry out their skin. Every few days, fill up a baby tub or the kitchen sink with around three or four inches of warm water. Why a baby bath? A standard bathtub is hard to manage until baby can sit up. A baby tub will give you the ability to control the water depth and baby’s movements, with its gentle slope.

  • Have a hand supporting the head and neck as you slip them in, feet first. They can get used to the water more easily this way, which is less likely to trigger crying!
  • Start washing at the top and work your way down; and don’t use too much soap, as it can be drying. Less is more in this case.
  • When done, lift them out the same way they went in and get them wrapped up in a warm, snuggly towel.
  • Don’t let bath time run long: the water will cool quickly and baby won’t enjoy that!

Since you can’t step away from a baby in a bath for even a second—children have drowned in less than an inch of water!—have all the things you’ll need handy:

  • Towels; more than one is a good idea… just in case!
  • A thermometer designed for baths, to make sure that the water temperature isn’t too hot or too cold.
  • A soft face cloth for washing all the parts.
  • Mild, baby formula soap.
  • A plastic cup for pouring water on their heads and on their bodies throughout the bath, which helps keep them warm.
  • A shampoo cap, which keeps the soap out of your baby’s eyes when rinsing.
  • A bath toy, for older kids.
  • Fresh diaper and clothes.

When can you transition baby to a standard tub?

When your baby can sit without being held up, you can transition to a regular tub. They are still wiggly and slippery though, so you still need to be very careful before, during and after!

With all these tips, both you and your baby can enjoy bath time—safely.
