Of course, they use the private play area and have add-on options such as character appearances, dancing, and balloons. Raising Astoria
At this Astoria play space and educational center known for their wonderful and whimsical classes for babies and children, various party options are available for your cuties. Customers must first contact the facility and staffers provide a tour and then they choose one of three packages: Basic–in which you bring your own food and decorations, Premium, in which they’ll take care of the food and decorations and Super Premium in which you get all the bells and whistles as well as age-appropriate entertainment, such as characters appearances or a jewelry or soap-making class. You get private use of the space for 3 hours; they charge only for the space rental, and not per child, there are no extra hidden fees for bringing your own food or balloons. Kids love the inflatable bounce house for 1 hour (or more), the foam blocks, the on-site play house, and of course, the variety of toys in the back room. Customers often tell the owners that hosting a party here is much like having a party in the privacy of their own homes but with more space, more toys for the kids and minus the clean up.

The Paint Place
Painting parties in which everyone paints the same general painting but it’s still personalized and “your own” are not just for adults. Kids are also gravitating to canvas paint parties and you don’t need any experience. Parties for kids here are 90 minutes long and include about 60 minutes of instructional painting of a prechosen image. Kids will paint anything from basic hearts and ice cream cones, to some works from Monet, Van Gogh, Warhol, you name it.  When kids paint, the teacher–a professional artist–usually incorporates some kind of art history lesson into the session. Parents can then use the remaining time to bring in any food/cake etc. Partygoers also have the option to extend their event by a half hour or hour, for a fee–just ask to speak with the team about it.

Queens County Farm Museum
Oftentimes we forget that NYC was once home to lots of farmland; the Queens County Farm Museum sits on what’s left of NYC’s largest portion of undisturbed farmland. On location is a greenhouse, historic farm buildings, livestock, farm vehicles and implements, planting fields, and orchard and an herb gardens. Parties here are so popular and niche that you must book one for your child as far in advance as possible–and weather can affect the activities your guests will participate in. At parties, kids take a hayride, go on a barnyard tour, see animals (the goats and sheep are very people-friendly!), and more. Parties are only held on weekends in the spring and summer and are 15 kids max. Parties are a great escape from the hustle and bustle of NYC and you’ll also see piglets, hens, lambs, and more. Mini Galaxy Play Cafe
This indoor play space in the heart of Jamaica also operates as a café. At 2,200 sq ft, mini GALAXY Play Cafe is a bit smaller than other venues on this list, but we really like that it’s quiet, cozy, and feels more intimate. In this super clean space, the play area—best for kids 7 and under—is to the right; and the café is to the left. The play section has a separate toddler space with soft block and riding toys, and the rest of the play area is a long two-tiered jungle-gym which includes padded rolling mats, rope floors to climb over, and parts where kids can climb or crawl through various mazes. There’s also swings, riding and bouncing toys, a dart board, basketball hoop, a book nook, double slides, and the always-popular ball pit. In the café, a kids movie always plays on TV. WiFi is free with entrance purchase, and if you set up your laptop at the counter area, you can work, eat, and watch your kids at the same time, which is great. Inside this whimsical space, you’ll find rotating, carousel-style rides (one looks like a cloud, another has cushiony dolphins that spin) that look like they’re made of foam. In the very back of this playspace is an awesome two-tiered climbing structure with a balloon room, awesome soft clear slide, maze, and, of course, a beloved ballpit. Parties are held on-site and there’s a private party room downstairs. Super cute place, but really best for toddlers, so think a 3rd or 4th birthday celebration. House Party: Birthday Entertainment That Comes to You!

—Rachel Sokol

Not so long ago, going 30 miles outside Washington, D.C., to Loudoun County was akin to making a day trip. Now, there are tons of reasons to make the drive – and take the kiddos. Named after John Campbell, the fourth earl of Loudoun, a Scottish nobleman and titular governor of Virginia from 1756-1759, the area started being settled in the late 1720s. A center of agriculture for more than 200 years, the arrival of Dulles International Airport in the 1960s initiated a transformation of the county by attracting businesses and residents. Today, about 330,000 people live in the 520-square-mile county, which is one of the country’s wealthiest. Check out the latest developments or let loose in the great outdoors.

Photo: Great Country Farms

Outdoor fun
With a beautiful backdrop against the hills of Virginia, Great Country Farms has pretty much everything a child dreams of: expanses of open space to run or picnic in, an enormous bouncy pillow, slides, goats to feed and pet, and a wagon ride to seasonal pick-your-own fields. Depending on the time of year, you can find peaches, blueberries, apples and pumpkins. For something more daring, get suited up at the Harpers Ferry Adventure Center for ziplining, a ropes course or tubing – either whitewater on the Potomac River or flatwater on the Shenandoah River.

Photo: Jeff Self via flickr

Indoor fun
If something less nature-y is more your scene, Loudoun’s spacious warehouse-size buildings answer your call. Sport Bounce of Loudoun is full of enormous inflatables, including a jumping pillow and steep slides, while Pump It Up offers two rooms of inflatables and special events such as Glow Jump. Chibis Indoor Playground is divided into two sections – one for littles 2 and younger and one for older tots. The idea is kids play while adults relax. Kidz Plaza indoor playground caters to kids 8 and younger with an enormous climbing structure, inflatables, a ball put and an infant area. For a more educational experience, check out Curiosity Zone of Ashburn, which offers STEM and science classes, camps and birthday parties. Or get your feet off the ground at iFly Indoor Skydiving – yes, kids as young as 3 can do it, too! Forget an airplane. Here, you stay afloat in a special chamber and fly alongside a trained iFly pro.

Fill up, stock up
The District may have become a foodie destination, but it’s not the only place to grab some grub. Head to The Zone, especially on a Tuesday, when it’s Kids Day with face painting, balloon animals, half off most arcade games and one free kid’s meal per adult entrée purchased. Part restaurant, part arcade, games include virtual reality, cosmic bowling and laser tag. OneLoudoun is a sprawling mixed-use community that offers shops and restaurants, including local faves Matchbox and Elevation Burger. While you’re in the area, stop by Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets, which has children’s clothing at stores such as NikeFactoryStore, Carter’s, Gap Factory, Gymboree Outlet and, Nautica Kids.

Ever since LEGO revealed its Minifigures Series 18: Party at Toy Fair this year, brick-heads have been chomping at the bit to get their hands on this awesome collection of adorable LEGO people—especially when this series includes the very first Minifigure LEGO made, all the way back in 1978. Here’s all the deets on how to get the 40th anniversary first LEGO Minifigure.

In 1978, LEGO introduced its first Minifigure—the Police Officer—to its brick construction sets. 40 years later, the master builders of LEGO are bringing back an exact replica of the Minifigure that started it all. Yep, that’s right: your kiddo can play with the same Minifigure that you might have played with yourself decades ago.

Here’s a closer look at some of the coolest LEGO Minifigures to come out of the toy brick maker’s latest line up of iconic yellow figurines.

Original 1978 Police Officer 40th Anniversary LEGO Minifigure

The Police Officer—along with 16 other special 40th anniversary Minifigures— will be available as of Apr. 1 (and no, this isn't some April Fool's prank on the part of LEGO, either). The LEGO Minifigures Series 18: Party will come in special ‘mystery’ bags, as with previous Minifigures series.

LEGO Birthday Party Girl Minifigure

LEGO will also introduce new costumes and accessories with this latest Minifigure series. New additions include a firework costume, dragon head and tail, cat mask, elephant mask, a balloon on a string, mouse, party cake and much, much more.

LEGO Dragon Suit Guy Minifigure

You might say this is the "hottest" Minifigure out of Series 18.

LEGO Unicorn Guy Minifigure

Does the Unicorn Guy LEGO Minifigure have a lot going on here? Yes. Is it still awesome? Absolutely.

LEGO Flower Pot Girl Minifigure

Perfect for those LEGO garden parties.

LEGO Cowboy Costume Guy

Giddy-up, pard'ner.

LEGO Party Clown Minifigure

Tiny LEGO balloon animals!

LEGO Cake Guy Minifigure

From the cheesy tux to the party hat, this LEGO Minifigure is the literal life of the party.

Birthday Party Boy LEGO Minifigure

Aww, happy birthday LEGO Minifigure! You look fabulous for 40.

The Complete LEGO Minifigures Series 18: Party Lineup

And here's all of the anniversary Minifigures that are part of the LEGO Minifigures Series 18: Party. The series' characters include: Dragon Suit Guy, Firework Guy, Elephant Costume Girl, LEGO Brick Suit Guy, LEGO Brick Suit Girl, Cactus Girl, Party Clown, Cake Guy, Unicorn Guy, Flower Pot Girl, Birthday Party Girl, Birthday Party Boy, Spider Suit Boy, Cowboy Costume Guy, Racecar Guy and Cat Costume Girl.

LEGO Minifigure mystery bags—each retailing for $3.99—will include one of the anniversary Party series characters. That means your kiddo could get the 40th anniversary Police Officer, Birthday Party Boy, or even Dragon Suit Guy—the fun is all in the surprise!

Even the name of this face painting company is beautiful, but not nearly as gorgeous as the work they do. Founded by a mom of three, the company is very aware of the importance of using safe paint products and never uses any they wouldn’t use on their own kids. No request is too challenging for the talented face paint artists and you’ll soon have everyone from Elsa to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in attendance at your party.

Face painting rates start at $100 per hour with a two-hour minimum. You can add on other services for an additional rate or purchase a package of two services for $215.

Extras: Besides face painting they also offer airbrush, glitter and metallic tattoos, henna and nail art. Peppermint Mill also teaches workshops on face painting so if you really do want to do it yourself, you’ll actually wow the kids with Mom’s prowess.

If your little one rises before the sun, you’re probably ready to get out of the house by the time the clock strikes 8 a.m. Yet, outside of the park (been there, done that ad infinitum), Los Angeles doesn’t offer a huge selection of places to go in the wee hours of the morning.  Here are a few suggestions of things to do, so you can turn off Dora and get out there and be an explorer.

The Kettle Restaurant/ Manhattan Beach Roundhouse
Located steps from the ocean in Manhattan Beach this local favorite is open 24 hours a day. The chocolate chip or Mickey Mouse pancakes are always a hit with the kids. As an extra bonus, all little ones get Wikki Stix and crayons as soon as they sit down so they’ll will be entertained while waiting for food. After breakfast you can walk to the end of the Manhattan Beach pier and check out the Roundhouse Marine Aquarium, which opens at 10 a.m. on the weekends and is free of charge (though there is a suggested donation of $2 per kid and $5 per adult). There’s a tidepool touch tank where your tikes can feel fun creatures such as sea stars, sea urchins and anemones.

The Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden
This is a hidden living museum located on the campus of UCLA. The best part is it’s free of charge and opens at 8 a.m. Your kids can check out unusual plants, turtles, and explore the many hidden paths the garden offers.  Then you can swing by local student favorite Diddy Riese for a mid-morning (cheap!) cookie break.

Exposition Park Rose Garden
Stop and smell the roses at this urban oasis in downtown Los Angeles. The spacious seven acre-gardens allows your kids plenty of space to run around and see more than 200 varieties of roses. It also makes for a great backdrop for photos.  After an early morning frolic among the flowers, you can always head next door to the Natural History Museum, which opens at 9:30a.m. for a entirely new adventure.

Du-par’s and The Grove
You need coffee.  You also need to get the heck out of the house.  But even your local Starbucks isn’t open yet.  Head to Du-par’s for some of best pancakes the city has to offer, plus a cup of no nonsense joe that will keep your peepers peeled.  All 6 Du-par’s locations are open 24/7, but when the kids are up early, we like to head to the Farmers Market location where after breakfast kids can run around the empty streets of the Grove, watching the fountains, playing on the green and waiting to take a tram ride.

What better way to start your day than with some new books and yummy snacks? Shop and play in their new indoor/outdoor Learn and Play area until their first drop-in activity begins at 9:30 a.m. Check out a class schedule to find out when your little ones can enjoy classes like story time, yoga for toddlers, and arts and crafts.  And if you’re up before the doors open at 9 a.m., you can take a stroll by the ocean, which is merely blocks away.  (Or swing into Urth Caffe, a few steps away, which opens at 6 a.m. for some cocoa and coffee to jumpstart your morning.)

Farmers Markets
Your local open-air market is always a great resource for getting the kids up and out the door early. You can stalk up on fruits and flowers while they can partake in several kid-friendly activities. One of our favorites is the Santa Monica Farmers Market on Sundays, which offers pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting, balloon animals and live music.  Most morning market open at 9 a.m., but the farmers drive in and start setting up in the wee hours, so your wee wakers can always head over on the early side.

Nothing Says Morning Like A Donut
If all else fails, there’s always donuts! East Coast transplants love the nostalgia of taking their kids for a special treat and let them choose a sprinkle, glazed or chocolate delight at the new Santa Monica Dunkin’ Donuts (opens at 5 a.m.). Or drive to one of Los Angeles’ most iconic landmarks, Randy’s Donuts, which features a can’t-be-missed giant donut on its roof. Thankfully, they also serve a great cup of coffee for very sleepy parents.

So, kids woke up at 5 a.m. and by 8 a.m., you’re all going stir crazy.  Where do you go?  Let us know, in the comments below!

Nestled along the bay in downtown San Diego with its picturesque views, cobblestone walkways and seaside charm, Seaport Village is the perfect place to spend the day. Despite being a favorite destination among tourists, local families flock to Seaport Village during the week and on the weekends for the food, fun and stores. With over 50 unique shops, 13 casual eateries, and four upscale restaurants (just in case your kiddo is that well-behaved!), free entertainment, and tons of beautiful green grass for picnics and kite flying, Seaport Village offers the best of San Diego.

When To Go
Seaport Village is open every day from 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. While the weekends are busier, that’s when you’ll find the most free entertainment. However, to avoid the crowds, swing by on a weekday. You’ll still find plenty to do, particularly if you pack a picnic lunch or bring a kite.

How To Get There
Located in downtown San Diego at West Harbor Drive and Pacific Highway, Seaport Village is just a five minute drive from the I-5 (coming from either direction). The boardwalk that runs along the bay (and along Seaport Village) connects to the USS Midway Museum, so if you’re already out for a day of Midway fun, consider walking down to Seaport Village, as it’s just one-half mile away. It’s a beautiful and easy walk. As far as parking goes, Seaport Village has its own parking lot. If you make any purchase over $10 and have your parking ticket validated, parking is just $3 for the first 2 hours and $2 every 30 minutes thereafter. Non-validated parking is just $8 per hour (or part thereof). You’ll also find some nearby metered parking, but remember that downtown meters are $1.25 per hour with a two hour max.

What To Do
Do not miss the antique carousel that dates back to 1895. It runs all day and costs just $2 per ride. The line is never too long and even when you see a large group of kids waiting for a turn, don’t leave! With 54 horses (and other animals), you’ll never wait longer than a few minutes.

Young kids love to stroll along the bay and look at the boats and birds. Seaport Village features over four miles of cobblestone walkways that are dotted with water features and lots of ducks. If you come at the right time of year, you’re sure to see baby ducks and really, who doesn’t love little chicks?

The huge spans of green grass are perfect for picnics and kite flying. Pack up a quick lunch for you and the kiddos, bring a blanket and enjoy. Even if you’re not the kite-flying type, you’re almost certain to see plenty of other people flying kites, so watch the show. On the weekends, many artists work at Seaport Village, including a face painter, a balloon artist and a caricature artist. Handfuls of unscheduled street performers also set up shop to entertain. Check out mimes, musicians, dancers and more.

Kids will love browsing in some of the specialty shops, such as Apple Box, where they can find unique, one of a kind wooden toys.  Take a break from the sun and celebrate the holidays by visiting Mistletoe, then test drive a relaxing hammock at Swings & Things. And don’t miss Kite Flite, an awesome place to buy kites -they’ll even let you “fly before you buy,” right outside the door in the San Diego bay breeze.

Seaport Village keeps a monthly calendar, where you can find out what’s happening as far as special events. Several annual events take place as Seaport Village, such as the Spring Busker Festival, Thanksgiving Dinner and more. The Surfin’ Santa, dressed in his board shorts and flip flops is a holiday favorite among the kiddos. While the dates vary slightly each year, these are annual activities that you can always plan to attend.

Where To Eat
If you’re not the picnicking type or don’t have time to pack a lunch, Seaport Village has plenty of places to eat that work for kids. For pizza lovers, try Assagio Pizza Pasta Plus. Or, if your kids prefer burgers, the San Diego Burger Company serves up fantastic burgers (including turkey burgers and veggie burgers) and fries. For healthier fare, the Village Cafe offers yummy sandwiches, salads, and soups  If you’re craving a snack, grab a big soft pretzel to share at Wetzel’s Pretzels. Sweet treats from Ben & Jerry’s or Seaport Village Cookie Company are sure to delight your little ones!

What’s the Cost?
Your trip to Seaport Village can cost as little as a few bucks if you score metered street parking or as much as the cost of lunch and a few balloon animals (or a ride on the carousel). If you plan on buying lunch, expect to spend at least $8 per person for the most part.

Insider’s Tip
If you’re planning on a Ben & Jerry’s treat for the whole family, order the kids scoop. It’s almost the same size as the small but you’ll save a few bucks (and a few calories). For a low key day, come Monday through Thursday, but if you’re in it for the entertainment, stop by on a weekend.
