The beloved children’s entertainer Raffi and Yo-Yo Ma celebrated 40 years of “Baby Beluga” earlier this month with a music video of the song. In it, Raffi adds a new verse to inspire his legions of “Beluga Grads” or adult fans. The video has been streamed more than 2 million times on various platforms.

On Jul. 31 Raffi and Yo-Yo Ma released the audio recording of this heartwarming performance. All profits from song downloads will benefit The Climate Mobilization, a grassroots group working to restore a safe climate, and which has contributed to more than 1,700 Climate Emergency Declarations around the world.

The song is now available to download from your favorite music retail site. Each download benefits The Climate Mobilization action group.

My Name Is Inigo Montoya; Prepare to Buy This Book!

Little Feminist Releases 3 New Inclusive Board Books for Toddlers

Let me start off by saying that I’m superstitious by nature. I always wear an evil eye bracelet to ward off bad luck and wear a red string to bring me good luck. I even bought extras and put them on the stroller and diaper bag. “Oh good, there’s no traffic” has never come out of my mouth because a mile down the road there will be traffic—because I said something, of course. I could keep going, but everyone gets the point.

When our first child was born, my husband and I had heard that it would be a good time to buy life insurance. My first reaction was anxiety. We are young and healthy, why do we need life insurance? Besides, why do they call it “life insurance” when the benefit is when you die? The anxiety along with my natural sense of superstition started to kick in, but I decided that it’s better to be prepared than sorry. Awful things do happen with or without amulets.

Like mom said, “Do your homework!” I wish someone had given me advice on where to start and what to ask. I hope my story helps. Please, ask many questions—act like a 2-year-old for once! Note that the younger you are when you buy life insurance, the better. Once you take care of it, it’s done. The result is lower anxiety which you can save for all the worrying you’ll be doing as a parent throughout your child’s lifetime.

1. Filling Out a Life Insurance Form Online at 2 a.m. Is a Bad Idea.

Let’s face it, Millennials love to buy online. It’s easy and convenient. Here’s what we learned quickly. Don’t buy life insurance online. Not at 2 a.m. when your baby is up and so are you, and not later in the day. A nicely designed website and a few clicks may seem like a good idea until you read the fine print. Online sites are driven by an algorithm and cannot understand your needs, concerns, and health situation.

Skipping an online service may save you money. After the underwriting process, a life insurance company can often return with a higher offer than the original quote you might have been first given.

2. Go Old School and Talk to a Person.

The best way to get the right life insurance policy is to use an independent life insurance agent. Almost the entire process is online so it will satisfy most people’s needs to feel connected on mobile. We asked around and found our agent. You can also search online. Just be sure to ask the agent if they work with several carriers. We learned that if you are healthy and under 50-years-of-age you can apply for life and disability insurance without a blood test for coverage of up to $3 million. Do what makes you feel comfortable and don’t be pressured to buy something you don’t need or cannot afford. Save that money for diapers and wine!

3. How Much Coverage Do You Need, Anyway?

We didn’t know where to begin, so we thought about why we wanted coverage and the amount we needed. For example, we took into consideration that we both worked and had a mortgage on our apartment.  Luckily for us, we had a human to help us calculate how much coverage we needed and for how many years. A rule of thumb is 10 times your annual income.

Surprise! Life insurance is less expensive than we thought. For example, a 30-year-old, non-smoking female in good health can get a 20-year term policy for $500,000 in death benefit for $16 a month. That’s the price of my once a week cappuccino over a month.

4. Term or Perm?

No, I’m not talking about your aunt’s hair in the 1980s, I’m talking about term life insurance versus permanent life insurance. If you’re on a budget, and who isn’t when you first have a baby, consider a term policy. My grandma just turned 101 years old last week and is addicted to video poker on my iPad. We started with a term policy, and if my evil eye bracelets keep me out of trouble, in about 20-years we’ll hopefully be able to afford to convert that policy into a permanent one. The advantage is that you don’t need to repeat the lab tests because even if you develop a health condition, the life insurance company will give you the same health rating as when you got the original policy. An important question to ask your agent is if the affordable term policy they are offering you is “convertible.”

5. Surprise! Life Insurance Can Help Fund Kiddo’s College Expenses.

This is something that you might want to consider hitting-up the grandparents for. Life insurance for children has nothing to do with a death benefit, thank goodness! According to Market Watch, “A portion of the money paid into the policies can help fund college expenses by taking out a loan against the cash value balance and using the money income tax-free, which must be paid back with interest.” It’s about putting away money each month that will grow in your baby’s college fund or can be used as a down payment for a home when they are older. Susana Zinn, who happens to be an independent life insurance agent and an amazing grandma said, “It’s a nice way for grandparents to leave a legacy without breaking the bank. If the grandchild later decides they want to launch a start-up instead of going to college, you can authorize your child to borrow the cash value, tax-free, and use it. Make sure the policy has living benefits.”

So basically, for a glass of wine at your favorite restaurant, you can cross off an item on the adulting list. If you get freaked out or make a mistake, like I did before I listened to a person in the know, you can cancel a policy within 30 days and get your money back. (Like I did the first time.) That and a good luck charm of your choice should give you peace of mind at least until your baby gets a driver’s license. Just be sure to ask lots of questions and feel comfortable with your ultimate decision.

Sam’s Club just announced the nationwide launch of curbside pickup. The service, which provides a contact-free, order online and delivery to car shopping experience, will be free for Plus-level members and is expected to be available in all clubs by the end of June. Curbside pickup is part of a list of Plus membership benefits, which also includes early shopping hours, free shipping on most online items, 2% cash back on qualifying in-club and pickup purchases and more.

Sam's Club Curbside

Sam’s Club has been piloting curbside pickup at 16 clubs with positive results from busy families and business owners. The company is expediting the roll out, taking it to all 597 clubs, to appeal to customer shopping preferences and growing desires for convenient options that fit into consumer’s lives.

“Sam’s Club members have been integrating technology into their shopping habits for a while with Scan & Go, samsclub.com and in-club pickup,” said Lance de la Rosa, Chief Operating Officer, Sam’s Club. “As we continue to innovate to make the shopping experience better and faster for our members, we’re proud to be able to quickly implement and offer curbside pickup across the country, particularly during a time when they are searching for alternative ways to shop.”

After setting up an account, members place orders via the Sam’s Club app or at samsclub.com. Products marked ‘Pick up in Club’ are eligible. Members will then complete an online shopping list, select a pickup time and checkout. Same-day pickup is available. Upon arrival to the club, members will use one of the designated pickup spots, and a Sam’s Club associate will load items into their cars.

Plus members will be able to schedule curbside pickup orders between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m., Mon. to Sat., and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sun. Non-Plus members will be able to use this new Plus benefit at no cost for a limited time, however, pickup times will be limited and only available 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.., Mon. to Sat., and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sun. Members who are interested in adding this free service can upgrade to a Plus membership at any time.

“While free Curbside Pickup is a new Plus member benefit, we recognize all of our members are looking for contact-free shopping options as part of the current environment,” said de la Rosa. “Because of that, we are going to temporarily make the service available for every member and do what we can to help them get the products they need, when and how they want them.”

Sam’s Club will also continue to offer its Concierge Service for seniors and high risk members every Tuesday and Thursday from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., and Hero Hours every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., until further notice. You can view a full list of member benefits on SamsClub.com

Product Hunt allows users to share and discover new products. Over the past few years, they have put on Makers Festivals to encourage makers to build and launch products in a short period of time. A new online festival has just been announced and it is open to people from all backgrounds from all over the world.

With so many people working from home, Product Hunt thought it would be a good time to host a global work from home festival that could benefit coronavirus relief efforts. Many products exist or have been created in order to make lives easier during this time. They even launched their own Product Hunt Merch shop last week focused on WHO’s COVID-19 response fund.

Now, Product Hunt wants makers to do the same. The call is out for the development of products geared towards assisting people at this time, from self-care to tools aimed towards healthcare workers on the front lines. Makers can work alone or in remote teams. Projects are not limited to a certain platform and they would like to see both no-code and code-based initiatives.

According to the rules posted on the website, products must be built within the period of the Makers Festival. Registration has started and continues through until Apr. 1 at 11 p.m. PT. All products must be submitted by Apr. 16 at 11 p.m. PT.

Voting will be open from Apr. 20 – Apr. 24. Entries will rated based on a combination of popularity within the online community and judging from the Product Hunt team. Winners will be announced on April 28.

The classroom setting is very much like a family setting. Just like any family, there are certain social norms and rules that should be followed for a productive environment. Children spend the majority of their time during the week inside the school setting, so educators are in a unique position to shape social skills and behaviors in order to best foster academic growth and success.

Parents have the most challenging and fulfilling job—not only to raise them to be productive members of society but also to instill in them behaviors that make our society better as a whole. The home setting is where parents can build the framework and foundation for these appropriate social norms and rules.

As the saying goes…it truly does take a “village” to raise a child. Parents and educators must be consistent in their methodology to foster social awareness and understanding.

At The Village School in Houston, we incorporate the Capturing Kids’ Hearts program into our educational environment and strive to ensure it is easily transferable into our students’ home routines. This amazing program focuses on culture and climate as the backbone for creating a truly great school experience. It prides itself on improving classroom culture, and positively impacting student performance, attendance rates, and discipline. And it also shows teachers how to create high-achieving learning centers built on positive relationships. Students’ connectedness to others is strengthened through healthy bonds with their teachers and collaborative agreements of acceptable behaviors. While this program takes place predominantly in school, we’ve seen great results outside the classroom as well.

Collaboration Is the Key to Success

To ensure success, everyone should have an opportunity to brainstorm and share what they feel would best benefit the environment and foster positive relationships. As a parent at home, it is important to lead the discussion and facilitate an open line of communication between all members of the family. The more fun you make this collaborative process, the more engaged every family member will be with a social contract structure within the home setting.

To get started, I recommend you obtain a copy of your child’s classroom social contract. This can be helpful for keeping the language and messaging consistent. If your child doesn’t have a social contract at school then create your own with your family.

Patience is key and making sure you allot time for open communication. Start off with a few questions about communicating, problem-solving and beyond such as:

  • How do you want to be treated by me?

  • How do you want to be treated by each other?

  • How do you think I want to be treated by you?

  • How do you want to treat each other when there is conflict?

As a guide, think about the typical character traits (i.e.: respect, empathy, acceptance, understanding, etc.). Once you’ve openly discussed these questions, write down the key factors and post it somewhere central for easy reference.

Commit to the Agreement

Have each family member sign the document! This allows you to go back to review what was originally agreed upon. Remember that this is ideally a self-management tool that individuals can reference to make the best choices possible.

At the beginning of my social skills groups, the participants and I develop a social contract for our expectations. Any sessions that follow involve a quick upfront discussion of what social norms and rules we agreed upon. If we do happen to have a behavioral issue within the social skills group, we immediately refer to the social contract to help coach the individual back to the agreed-upon expectation.

One example of the social contract program working at home could be everyone agreeing to the no-phone rule at the dinner table. When a family member is tempted to bring out their phone, they remind each other of the social contract and agree that dinner time is family time.

The Benefits of a Social Contract

This cultural change can have an enormous impact in the home setting. If your family is committed to the contract, you’ll see an increase in connectedness, a healthier social-emotional climate, behaviors that are more aligned toward social and emotional safety, and positive child self-management. The best benefit is that a social contract teaches self-responsibility which is such a critical component to everyday life.
