With free fun and bountiful choices of amazing parks in the South Bay, pack a picnic and load up the car (and maybe the kids, too). We’ve picked thirteen of our faves below to give you tons of options for fun in the sun!

Seven Sea Park, Sunnyvale

There is so much to love about this amazing pirate-themed park that boasts both climbing and water fun (yes—the water is still on). Highlights include a mind-blowing toddler play structure, a water play/splash area, a rope and metal climbing gym, and a pirate ship that is accessible to kids of all abilities. Rotary PlayGarden, San Jose

This San Jose playground is specifically designed to be fun for kids of all abilities. From the wheelchair accessible merry-go-round, to the concrete slides designed to prevent interference with cochlear implants, tons of planning went into the design of this awesome park. Climb on some bugs, bang on the chimes and make the dragonflies fly! Make sure you bring your hats and sunscreens (or pick a cloudy day) as shade is unfortunately scarce at this park. What is YOUR favorite gym with childcare? Let us know in the Comments!

— Nicole Morris & Kelly Aiglon

If your kids can scale sofas, are masters of the monkey bars and tireless tree-climbers, you’re in luck. California’s newest and biggest indoor rock climbing gym just opened near LAX, and it’s the spot to let your little monkeys (safely!) scale some serious heights as they climb buildings, hop up towers, and race to the tops of the walls. Read on to get the scoop.

What Is It?
Sender City is just one piece—a kiddified nook—of the cavernous Sender One Climbing Gym, the spanking new sister of the Santa Ana climbing mecca with the same name. Step inside the giant warehouse, located a quarter-mile south of LAX, and you’ll feel like you’re inside a futuristic airport hanger. Swooshes of blue and orange decorate soaring white walls which tower more than six stories high. For serious climbers, Sender One offers a multitude of challenges and 36,000-square feet of walls to climb. For kids who are new to the sport, or people who just want to have fun climbing (and jumping off) walls, Sender City is where you want to be.

And it’s not just for kids. Sender City participants must be over 30 pounds, but can be up to 300 pounds. Which means, Mom and Dad: Gear up and get climbing!

First Things First: Waivers & Gear
After filling out the required waiver at the front desk, you’ll head past the entry to the main climbing area toward the Sender City room. Then, before you can go in, you’ll need to gear up. This means strapping on a standard rock climbing harness that’ll hook you into the auto-belay system (more on that later) and, basically, keep you and your little climbers from harm. (Hint: Make sure you and your kids are all wearing pants and close-toed shoes; this is not the place for skirts, dresses or flip-flops.)

Once you’re inside, Mama Bears will be comforted to know that Sender City keeps an instructor/child ratio of around 1 to 6, so there will always be someone to clip your kids in and out of the belay system as well as scurry up and rescue your little monkey if they decide they’re just not coming down when the time comes. Also helpful: Sender City participants must book their one-hour sessions in advance to ensure that no more than 15 people are in the gym at a time.

The Wall’s The Limit!
This is not your standard climbing gym, and it’s nothing like the rock walls you find at carnivals or theme parks. In fact, in all of Sender City’s 22 climbing challenges, there’s not a plain old rock wall to be found. Instead, you and your brood will be scaling giant spider webs, scampering up an in-the-dark vertical tunnel, navigating up a hands-on maze, racing up timed competition walls and balancing on “skyscraper” beams that get higher and higher with each step. For each challenge you complete, you’ll get a check on your Sender City Passport; finish this whole card (it’ll take a few visits) and you’ll score a T-shirt and $100 off an annual membership.

Don’t Be Afraid to Get Down
While Sender City’s walls are shorter than those inside the main climbing gym, the kids’ courses stand more than three stories high and since all of them go up, they all end with the inevitable “must come down.” And, as easy as it might look, this is the scariest of all for little ones and their onlooking (or participating!) parents. But once you get the hang of it—just put your hands up and kick off the wall—the auto-belay system will catch you and you’ll glide down as gracefully as Peter Pan on Broadway. This is thanks to the auto-belay system, which is run by hydraulics and is more than capable of handling full-grown men, let alone your tiny tots.

Looking for Thrills? You Might as Well Jump
As if climbing up and soaring down aren’t enough of an adrenaline rush, some of Sender City’s stops are there purely to challenge your chutzpah. Courageous kiddos (and crazy parents) will want to try the Jump Catch, where they must leap off of a two-story high platform to catch a hanging bag. Don’t be surprised if your intrepid daredevil gets to the top and then changes her mind. It happens. (Our writer, for one, wouldn’t go anywhere near it!)

Then, Try the Really Big Slide
Looking for something with a little less leap? Put on a giant red fabric suit (it makes you more slippery) and hang onto a trapeze bar as operators lift you about 50 feet up a vertical slide then ask you to let go. “It’s quite scary,” was all our instructor said about the challenge. Of course, it’s only as scary as you want it to be, since you can tell the operators to stop the ascent whenever you think you’re high enough.

Rugrats Can Play While Older Sibs Climb
If you don’t want to hire a sitter to watch your littlest monkey while you take the older sibs to Sender City, they’re got that figured out, too. Sender City has a bouldering wall where smaller climbers are allowed to hang (literally and figuratively) while older sisters and brothers tackle the big stuff. Keep in mind, this area is not fenced in, so your toddler has to have someone watching her at all times.

Older kids, especially those who are a little nervous on the higher walls, can also practice their skills here, and it makes a nice, confidence-building break in between the scarier climbs.

But Wait, There’s More
If your little climbers are ready to take their climbing to the next level, now’s the time to enroll them in a class at Sender One so they can see what it’s like to climb the big walls. Sender One offers drop-in climbing sessions for kids ages 6 & up (5-year-olds are admitted if they’re ready and can follow directions well). There’s also a one-month, once-a-week Climbing Academy for kids who want to learn the fundamentals of climbing including technique, problem solving skills and basic knot tying.

Want your birthday boy or girl to be the coolest kid in school? Book this place for a party. The sheer novelty of Sender City (there’s just no place like it in LA) means your kids and their friends will be sufficiently wowed. Major points for Mom and Dad.

Sender City Hours: Currently open weekends by reservation and from 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. MondayFriday.
Cost: $25 per person for a one-hour session (includes all equipment and instructor supervision.)

Who said kids get to have all the fun? When you’ve had a long week and are in desperate need of catching up with your best bud, head to one of the following spots to guarantee happy kids and (relatively) uninterrupted grown-up time. Go on, elevate that momversation to a conversation. You deserve it!

Bellina Alimentari at Ponce City Market

Meet your friends at Ponce City Market for a kids’ kitchen class at Bellina Alimentari. This parent-child cooking class ($45/ pair, ages 8-12) is held monthly and is the perfect spot for you to enjoy some grown-up conversation while you and the kids follow the chef’s lead and whip up a batch of homemade pasta (they also offer pizza-making for kids, and classes taught by owner and mom Tal Baum directed to parents for easy tips on healthy cooking). The best news? This meet-up can take place over a glass of wine for the grown-ups and seasonal house-made sodas for the kids. Score x 2!

Pro tip: Go early and putt around on the recently opened rooftop mini golf facility!

The Peach Pit

This one may take the cake, y’all. While you enjoy the company (and WiFi), your kiddos can run, play, tumble, and burn off every last drop of energy in The Peach Pit’s clean, safe, and supervised space. Schedule a playgroup for up to 20 kids for $250 or head to the open gym on weekends for $10 per member (check the Facebook page for hours and dates) during the summer. In August, weekday toddler times for ages 5 and up resume from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for $10 per member (moms stick around), as well as mother’s morning out from 9 a.m. to noon for ages 5 and under for $30 per member (moms can take the convo elsewhere, and pick up at noon).

Pro tip: Check out Atlanta Rocks! indoor climbing gym next door to The Peach Pit sometime. It’s another awesome indoor space for kids to try something new and burn a few kilowatts, in the process.

Caja Popcorn at Peachtree Battle Shopping Center

Not only is this little Buckhead gem a favorite of adults and kids alike—don’t depart without a taste of their pimiento cheese popcorn—but it’s also nestled between Starbucks (for you) and Baskin Robbins (for you, but under the guise of being for them), just in case one of your kiddos prefers the cold stuff. With outdoor benches in a covered breezeway, a trip to Caja is a great bet for meeting up with a friend and actually getting a conversation in.

Pro tip: When the natives finish their popcorn, take a stroll to the other end of Peachtree Battle Shopping Center. You can do some serious window shopping (River Mint Finery for you, and Richard’s Variety Store and Carter’s for them) while keeping the dialogue up.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream at Westside Provisions District

Ok, so this gourmet ice cream spot may appeal to grown-ups too. We’re just warning you here, but with flavors like wild berry lavender and birch and marshmallows, you’ll have a hard time not imbibing. But the real reason Jeni’s is also a splendid spot for a mom meet-up is that just through the breezeway you’ll find a semi-enclosed courtyard that’s complete with picnic tables, a grassy area below, and (drum roll please) access to a pedestrian bridge over a train track—the best spot in town for little train fans to toot their horns while their moms catch up on life.

Pro tip: After you’ve checked out the pedestrian bridge over the train track, keep walking towards the shops on the other side of WPD. You’ll find a ping pong table outdoors as well as a corn hole set-up on pretty days, surrounded by adirondack chairs for continuing the convo.

There are perks for parents, too, of course, including spying capabilities through closed-circuit TVs and in-gym spa services. Here are some of the more outside-the-[CrossFit]-box options we found.

These days there’s a new, playful reason to head to Sellwood. Recently opened in January, Pied Piper Play Cafe has all the makings to lure every member of your Portland fam. Enjoy a caffeinated brew (or hoppy IPA) while jumping onto their free Wifi and your lil’ skipper tackles the animatronic dinosaur in the Play Cafe’s spacious play-area. Read on to see why this local coffee shop should be your new favorite hang out.

Play

With a colorful mural of a Pied Piper leading a procession of famous cartoon characters like Curious George, Snoopy, Mother Goose and more, you know Pied Piper Play Cafe is furnished for a fantastic time. Come for the decked-out play area, fitted with a kid-sized gear to play house, plush toys, a wide array of engaging gizmos and even a climbing gym. Soft flooring in a faux wood finish allows for a friendly landing for quick trips down the slide. While the space is designed for kids 5 & under, older playmates who can play gently and respectfully are welcome, too. Admission to the play area is $3/child, with discounts available for frequent visitors.

Eat and Drink

It’s easy to sip your much needed cuppa while keeping an eye your ball of energy. Parents can set up at one of the ledges overlooking the play space, or at a circular table in the airy area for older kids who need a little less supervision.

Split a mouthwatering breakfast meal or classic sandwiches, soup, salads, and appetizers with the little ones. Or let your muncher grab their own meal for $4.50, which gets your little gourmand’s choice of one entree, one side, and a drink. Looking to really unwind? Order a beer or wine and take advantage of the play time and free Wi-Fi. On a weekend, it’s typical to see a few parents enjoying mimosas while letting the kids whoop it up.

Restroom 411

Breathe a sigh of relief, because the restrooms as kid-friendly as they can come. There’s a stepstool to help small people wash their hands, a real changing table (not a plastic fold-down) for the babes, and even some extra wipes and diapers just in case you run out.

Take it Outside

Head outside for fenced-in fun. Your mini-me can play houses or teeter-totter on the neat see-saw. You’ll have to venture outside to keep a close eye on the kiddos, but on warmer days, we consider any chance to soak up the sun as a bonus.

Insider Info.

On weekends, this spot gets hopping, so come earlier in the day for a more laid back experience. But if hanging with your neighbors and making new friends is on the agenda, after 10 a.m. is the time to consider.

As a real community addition, Pied Piper Play Cafe also hosts private birthday parties, classes and fun events that’ll satisfy all ages. All parties are private, leaving the place closed to public, so be sure to check the website’s calendar before heading over.
