Contestants will create their most unique baked goods using the new Funfetti OREO collection, and the winner will receive a one-year supply of Funfetti products or $500 in cash, have their winning recipe featured on PillsburyBaking.com and be able to host an Instagram Live baking demo on @pillsburybaking.

Now through Jan. 26, home bakers have a chance to show off their skills for a chance to be entered in the digital competition. Simply pick your favorite baking partner, submit photos of yourselves and the favorite creation you’ve baked, along with a short description explaining why you and your partner are the perfect pair to bake for Duff and Matthew. Pillsbury Baking will select 10 semifinalist duos, who will be posted on Pillsbury Baking’s website for the public to vote. The three duos who receive the most votes will participate in the digital baking contest in February, and the winner will be announced in March. More details and rules for entry can be found at PillsburyBaking.com.

3…2…1…Blast off! The Right Stuff brings us the incredible story of America’s first astronauts. The special two-episode premiere will air on Disney+ on Fri. Oct. 9.

Based on the bestselling book by Tom Wolfe, the eight-episode season looks at the early days of the U.S. Space Program and the iconic story of America’s first astronauts, the Mercury 7. Produced for National Geographic by Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way and Warner Bros. Television, The Right Stuff takes a clear-eyed look at America’s first “reality show,” when ambitious astronauts and their families became instant celebrities in a competition of money, fame and immortality.

At the height of the Cold War in 1959, America fears it is a nation in decline as the Soviet Union dominates the space race. But, the U.S. government has a solution – put a man in space. Newly-formed NASA is given the monumental task, and a group of the nation’s best engineers estimate they’ll need decades to accomplish the feat, but they only have two years.

NASA engineers, including rocket scientist Bob Gilruth (Patrick Fischler) and Chris Kraft (Eric Ladin), work against the clock under mounting pressure from Washington. Together, they hand select seven astronauts from a pool of military test pilots.

The two men at the center of it all are Major John Glenn (Patrick J. Adams) and Lieutenant Commander Alan Shepard (Jake McDorman). Other members of the Mercury 7 include Captain Gordo Cooper (Colin O’Donoghue), Wally Schirra (Aaron Staton),Scott Carpenter (James Lafferty), Deke Slayton, (Micah Stock) and Gus Grissom, (Michael Trotter).

The series also examines the astronauts’ families, including Annie Glenn (Nora Zehetner), Louise Shepard (Shannon Lucio) and Trudy Cooper (Eloise Mumford).

Have you read and reread all of the Harry Potter books?J.K. Rowling has just announced her new story, The Ickabog. A new chapter (or more) will be posted in installments from now until Jul. 10.

mom and daughter reading

Rowling started writing The Ickabog while she was finishing the Wizarding World series with the intention of publishing it after the seventh Harry Potter book was released. Instead she decided to focus on adult novels and left her draft of The Ickabog in the attic where it remained for ten years.

On the website, Rowling says, “It isn’t Harry Potter and it doesn’t include magic. This is an entirely different story.”

Rowling said she read the chapters aloud to her two younger children while she was writing and after filing it away, it became a story just for them. During the pandemic she brought the book out again and reread it to her kids, adding bits that they liked when they were little.

The author is also inviting young readers to provide illustrations for the story. Rowling will offer suggestions, but she encourages children to let their imaginations go wild. Parents can share their child’s artwork on Twitter using the hashtag #TheIckabog. Rowling will not be judging the competition. Publishers around the world will be free to choose the illustrations they feel suit the book.

The Ickabog will be published in November. All proceeds will be donated to those affected by the coronavirus.

Parents are looking for new ways to keep their kids occupied during their time at home during the COVDI-19 pandemic. Many companies are launching learning based initiatives. Now several automakers are now offering design-oriented projects.

Nissan North America is offering 23 downloadable coloring pages featuring Nissan classic cars, current models, futuristic concepts and some “cult classic” models, such as the Nissan Figaro and ChoiMobi.

“To draw, draw, draw, in our world, is one of the best ways to close the gap between wonderful creative impulses in your head and making it a reality – especially as we face this global pandemic together,” said Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan’s senior vice president for global design in a video from his home promoting the initiative.

“Our team of designers, worldwide, are using this time to breathe, to draw, to dream creatively. I know that some of their best work will come from the challenges that we’re facing now. So we thought, ‘Why not give everyone a chance to express themselves creatively and share it with those who will appreciate it?’”

In the video, Albasia, along with his children, shows what he is working on. In the coming weeks, designers from his team will post their design inspirations, what they are currently working on, why they became car designers and how to break into the business.

Individuals can tag their drawings, from sidewalk art to napkin sketches to the downloaded coloring book pictures, with #drawdrawdraw.

“We’re looking forward to celebrating passion and creativity,” Albaisa says “Don’t be surprised if you see a Nissan designer comment on your drawings and artwork.”

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is encouraging a new generation of aspiring designers to bring their automotive dreams to life through the “Young Designer Competition.” They are calling on kids under age 16 to design their dream Rolls-Royce of the future.

The competition is an extension of the annual Rolls-Royce employees’ Family Day Celebration, held at the home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England. This year, Rolls-Royce is opening up the competition to a worldwide audience. The deadline for entries to be submitted is May 18.

The design team will judge all entries and select an overall winner who will receive a rendered illustration of their design as well as a chauffeur-driven journey in a Rolls-Royce Phantom for their first day back to school, with their best friend. Runners-up will receive a hand-signed certificate from Torsten Müller-Ötvös, the chief executive officer of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

Ford Motor Co. recently posted an activity book online in early April including sketches of Mustangs and classic Fords to color. STEM activities are also in the works.

The automaker asks that parents share their kids’ work with social networks and use the hashtags #keeplearning, as well as #Fordemployees and #stayhome.

Travel Plans Cancelled? Take a Virtual Vacation

I feel like my 4-year-old nephew wrote this story: “There will be a virus that will scare the whole world, a lot of people will suffer, schools will be closed and the world will run out of toilet paper.” Who would have thought that year 2020 is going to start out like this!

It is not an understatement to say 2020 is going to be a defining year in many ways for all of us. This year put family, life, and staying healthy into focus like never before. As we all get into the groove of working from home, cooking three meals a day, online classes for the kids and social distancing, we also need to pay attention to staying sane, healthy and reaching out to those who are alone and could potentially be impacted by social distancing more than many of us.

Extroverts, like me, are going to have a hard time being in isolation and not being able to interact with people face to face. We tend to get our energy through these interactions. If your kid is an extrovert and thrives in the company, they will also face similar issues. Please be mindful of this and figure out ways to give them social interactions.

How can you handle all this from home? You have plenty of useful tips on the web on how to work from home, set a routine, and manage day-to-day activity without losing your mind. Here are some tips from us at S’moresUp on how you can make it fun and a better experience for kids.

  • Do a brainstorming session with the kids to come up with fun activities for the family. Ask everyone to come up with ideas and vote on it. We came up with a bunch of ideas in our family like family potluck (where each one of us will make a dish for dinner), scavenger hunt in the house, jumping jack competition, etc. Reserve time in the evening every day to do this together. These all can go to the Rewards section in the S’moresUp app.
  • Set up daily and weekly chores for the kids. Make it a competition if you have more than one kid and reward them weekly. Movie choices, a virtual hangout for an hour with a friend of their choice, they get to set a menu for a day, they get to be the adult in the house for the day (play the role of dad or mom), etc.
  • Daily family workout time. Do simple workouts together. Keep them active.
  • Set up a time for them everyday to hang out with some friends via Google Hangout or FaceTime. There is a chrome extension called ‘Netflix Party’ that you can use where they can watch a movie together and chat at the same time. Give that a try.
  • Set up their calendar and help them plan, so they know what their day looks like. Put in everything from playtime, workout time, virtual playdate time in the schedule. Given them a structure and set expectations for the week.

Social distancing is essential, but you can still take them on a drive. If allowed by local government, go out for a run. Walk the dog. Make sure that they get some fresh air.

You can get playful with the family wall. Put up a surprise game for them for the day like a scavenger hunt. Start a friendly challenge with your neighbor using Family Circle or send virtual hugs and kisses to your ones.

Play dates and group activities have been cancelled, and Portland parents are scrambling for ways to keep things fun this weekend. We’ve got your back. You may not be able to hang with friends, but there’s plenty of options for outside and inside fun with kids. Read on to find out more.
