10 Unplugged Family Vacations to Take This Year

Staycation Spotlight: Hotels with Amazing Kid Amenities

11 Reasons a Family Vacation Can Change Your Child’s Life

Family Vacations Can Impact Kids’ Life-Long Happiness, Experts Agree

Every parent can relate this time of year. You’re frantically trying to hunt down that perfect gift, squeeze in a Santa visit, and bake Pinterest quality cookies, all while trying to create magical memories your kids will remember for a lifetime. Just thinking about it can be exhausting. But one visit to Warm Beach Camp’s The Lights of Christmas will take that last item (and more) off your holiday to-do list. Read on for the inside scoop on this cant-miss holiday extravaganza.

photo: Angela Alanis

Lights, Lights, and more Lights!
With over one million lights covering every tree, cabin, and gingerbread man, walking into The Lights of Christmas may be the next best thing to walking into the North Pole. Eyes will be twinkling as you take in Santa’s elves and sugar plums, scenic mountains, even a lighthouse scene. As you wander to the sounds of holiday music, you may even start to think you’ve walked into one of those wonderfully cheesy Hallmark Christmas movies we’re all secretly obsessed with this time of year.

Don’t have the energy to fight another big holiday crowd? The lights at Warm Beach are spread over 15 acres so even at peak times there’s plenty of room for a stroller or to safely let your toddler explore a few feet ahead.

photo: Angela Alanis

Other Activities to Do and See
If the amazing spectacle of lights isn’t enough to thoroughly hypnotize your little ones, take a ride on the Polar Express train or chat with Bruce the Spruce, the talking Christmas tree. Stop and take a picture with Frosty who is often seen strolling by, cruise by the petting farm, go on a pony ride or take in a holiday show (or two) at one of five entertainment stages . If you want to achieve the elusive “two birds with one stone,” Santa Claus will be on site just awaiting to hear the minis wish lists. And if you still have some holiday shopping to do, be sure to stop by the Toy Shop, Joyland Ornament Shop and gift shops. Psst! If all these activities make you hungry, follow the heavenly smell of fresh homemade donuts that will make any kid wait patiently in line for a sugary bite (OK, maybe Warm Beach can’t perform a Christmas miracle, but the donuts are really good and well worth the wait).

5 Course Meal or Dessert Matinee? It IS a Wonderful Life!
For families with kiddos 8 and older, head over to the Cedar Lodge for the Holiday Dinner Theatre. Relax and enjoy a 5-course meal, while watching the “radio version” of It’s a Wonderful Life live on stage. If you don’t think your little wiggle worms can make it through the four-hour dinner theatre, try the Dessert Matinee on Sundays, which goes just over two hours. Make your reservations online, and be sure to book early!

photo: Angela Alanis

Know Before You Go
1. Bundle up! With the exception of food and performances, expect to spend the majority of your time outside. Even if it doesn’t feel too chilly at first, it will after an hour or two of walking around.

2. Hit the ATM before you go. The Camp accepts credit/debit cards at the gate, but cash is preferred at the many of the cafés and concession stands inside. Good to know: There is an ATM on site, so if you forget to stop at the bank you won’t have to be tortured by the sweet smell of the donuts.

3. Leave your heels at home. Aside from a quick ride on the Polar Express, you’ll be exploring the 15 acres on foot so throw on your most comfortable walking shoes. Tree roots have also pushed their way up into some of the sidewalks so keep an eye out.

4. You can stay the night! Not ready to head back to reality so soon? Warm Beach Camp has numerous cabins and holiday-themed lodges you can reserve for the night. Check their website for more info or to reserve your space. But book early, as space is limited.

5. If you don’t encounter traffic, the trip will take you approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes from Seattle. Pack some snacks, crank up the holiday tunes and make the most of the drive north.

That lakefront weather we bemoaned all winter? All will be forgiven. Chicago’s public beaches have just opened and welcome you to dig your toes in the sand and soak up sunshine. You’ll find beaches from Woodlawn on the South Side all the way to Illinois Beach State Park in Zion, near the Wisconsin border.

To help you and your sandcastle bandit have a blast, we’re sharing the scoop on our favorite beaches from south to north. The best thing about these spots: They’re free.

63rd Street Beach
When it comes to stunning architecture loaded with history, fancy North Side beach houses have nothing on this Woodlawn treasure. Built as a bathing pavilion in the early 1900s, it has two floors of stunning archways and corridors that beg for a few rounds of hide-and-seek. The interactive water fountain is popular with kids and provides hours of good, clean fun. Most importantly, its sandy shores don’t see the stifling crowds of other popular locales.

Open daily from May 25-September 3, 11:00 am-7:00 pm
6300 S. Lake Shore Dr.
Woodlawn
312-742-5121
Online: www.chicagoparkdistrict.com

Oak Street Beach
Waves lap the shore in front of you; the urban jungle looms behind. Oak Street Beach is the best of both worlds. It’s not the sprawling oasis that other locations can claim, and the hunt for street parking is an adventure in itself. Still, nothing rivals the Chicago-ness of tossing a frisbee with the Drake Hotel as your backdrop. Make a day of it and rent bikes, or engage in a battle of wits at the chess tables. A light lunch at the onsite Oak Street Beach Cafe will make sure you don’t run on empty.

Open daily from May 25-September 3, 11:00 am-7:00 pm
1000 N. Lake Shore Dr.
Gold Coast
312-742-5121

North Avenue Beach
This beach attracts sun worshippers citywide and is practically synonymous with Chicago summers. Between the volleyball nets, roller hockey rink, and bar and grill housed in a moored ship, you’re bound to forget your Midwest bearings. It’s a spot that’s also famous for people watching and spots can be nabbed along Cannon Drive, but you may have to hoof it close to eight blocks. While you’re there, stop at nearby attractions, like Lincoln Park Zoo or, better yet, Chicago History Museum to avoid scorching midday heat.

Open daily from May 25-September 3, 11:00 am-7:00 pm
1600 N. Lake Shore Dr.
Lincoln Park
312-742-5121
Online: www.chicagoparkdistrict.com

Montrose Beach
Skip the downtown stretches in favor of a North Side secret. Free parking and green space abound; you can even grill and set the kids loose on the nearby playground. Furry family members can frolic in the enclosed dog beach area on the north end (don’t forget pup’s DFA tag). After the last sandcastle is built, venture with your mini explorer to the bird sanctuary at the southernmost tip of the beach. Chances are you’ll run into a professional birder who may point out a purple warbler, downy woodpecker or American goldfinch — just a few of many species spotted in this hidden gem.

Open daily from May 25-September 3, 11:00 am-7:00 pm
4400 N. Lake Shore Dr.
Uptown
312-742-5121
Online: www.chicagoparkdistrict.com

Illinois Beach State Park
Even father afield, about an hour from downtown Chicago, is this natural beauty. Enjoy the great outdoors and appease everyone in the family with activities like hiking along one of two looped trails, pedaling along the Zion Bike Trail, fishing in Sand Pond and toasting s’mores over a campfire (camp permits run $25 a night). If after a full day of fun the kids are reluctant to leave, get a room at the onsite Illinois State Beach Resort & Conference Center to soothe sunburned shoulders and kick up tired feet.

Open from sunrise to 8:00 pm from Memorial Day Weekend – Labor Day Weekend; after Labor Day Weekend through October open sunrise to sunset; from November to December open 8:00 am to sunset
Located near Sheridan & Wadsworth roads

Exploring the touch pool at the Monterey Bay Aquarium

Kid-Friendly Monterey – Exploring Monterey Bay and Carmel Peninsula with Kids

Spring is the perfect time to introduce young ones to the wonders of the Monterey Bay and the surrounding coast. Along with the usual sea lions, pelicans, and otters, the gray whales’ migration is in full swing, so with the help of some binoculars, littlies can get a glimpse of some blowholes and flipping tails out amongst the waves.

Of course, weather can be a bit unpredictable in the spring, so if you find your beach plans socked in by fog or your hike plans bumped by rain, there are far worse places to find yourself than the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. In fact, we think a perfect day would be spent waiting out the fog and getting acquainted with the creatures at the aquarium, then spending the afternoon outside in the sun and sea air.

WHERE TO STAY:

As one of northern California’s biggest tourist destinations, the Fisherman’s Wharf and Cannery Row areas of Monterey boast plenty of family-friendly accommodations. However, while some have gotten a bit shabby over the years, a pair of centrally-located ones have been renovated and are worthy of your attention. First, there’s the Monterey Bay Inn, which boasts private balconies in all of its guest rooms, as well as a rooftop hot tub with view of the bay. Complimentary breakfast delivered to your room is another plus (rates start at around $180/night) .

Our other downtown pick is the Clement.

Kids on the climbing wall at the Clement

With its modern decor and oceanfront patio (as well as many rooms with balconies and fireplaces), it’s quickly becoming the go-to spot for those in the know (rates start at around $170/night). TIP: the onsite VIP Kids Club provides childcare options and babysitting, so that you can steal some private time with your spouse. Kids can scramble on a climbing wall, play video games, or learn more about Monterey while you enjoy grown-up time.

If you’d rather stay away from Cannery Row, the Julia Morgan-designed Asilomar Conference Center, in nearby Pacific Grove, offers more of a resort feel. From its perch among the dunes, you can wander the surrounding boardwalks on foot or bicycle, and they offer aquarium packages—an awesome way to save money for some stuffed sea otter souvenirs (rates start at around $120/night, aquarium package for $191/night)

GET OUT AND PLAY:

First stop: the Monterey Bay Aquarium. If you haven’t been in awhile, you’ll want to check out the blackfoot penguins, which are always a major hit with kids. And the Secret Life of Seahorses, a special exhibit featuring several different species of these ethereal, captivating creatures, is another surefire crowd-pleaser. The Rocky Shore touch pool (is your tot brave enough to stroke a sea cucumber?) and the outer bay exhibit (complete with glowing, drifting jellyfish) are also must-sees for the little ones.

Located near Fisherman’s Wharf, MY Museum is another rainy day attraction for families. The 100% hand-on exhibit is ideal for the under 5 set, with miniature sandy beaches, vegetable fields and golf courses that replicate the world just outside the museum doors.   It has reciprocal family memberships with children’s museums all over the country, including the San Jose Children’s Discovery Museum, the Bay Area Discovery Museum in Sausalito and Habitot in Berkeley.

Teeming with kids on the weekends, Dennis the Menace playground is located just steps from the Monterey Pier and  Del Monte beach in Monterey’s Estero Park. Built with a donation from cartoonist and Monterey local Hank Ketcham, the park’s been around since 1956, and several renovations over the decades have improved it. Standout features include a life-sized train engine that kids can climb all over, a suspension bridge, a hedge maze, several massive climbing structures and, of course, a bronze statue of Dennis that your little menaces will love posing next to.

If it’s sun, sand, and sea you’re after, head a few miles south. Carmel Beach always finds a special place in the hearts of visitors. Maybe it’s the supersoft sand, the frolicking fams and pooches, the tidepools ripe for exploring or the great views of Pebble Beach (earth to dad…earth to dad…). Either way, it’s one of our favorite beaches in all of California. TIP: the parking lot is usually full, so look for parking first on a nearby side street.

For some full-on coastal drama, the views of the water and of Carmel from Point Lobos make for some of the best photos around. Organize the group for a family snapshot, then take a short hike, checking out sea otters, sea lions and harbor seals along the way. TIP: Beware of poison oak, it’s rampant around here, and the brambly bushes sprout only tiny (but still potent and itch-inducing) leaves as warning. Wear long sleeves and pants, stay on the path, and you’ll be rewarded with a quintessential Cali experience, minus the itchies.

GET THEM TO EAT:

It’s easy to overspend on oversized plates of mediocre seafood, but if you keep things simple, everyone will stay happy. Grabbing a bowl of chowder from Old Fisherman’s Grotto on the Monterey Pier or some fish tacos from The Fishwife’s Turtle Bay Taqueria are great options for lunch, and for dinner, Taste Café or Red House Café, both in Pacific Grove, offer elegant fare for adults along with kid-friendly fare in tasteful settings.
