Does “Sesame Street” Make Kids Smarter? New Research Weighs In

This week at SXSW 2019, news finally broke on Twitter’s new camera! The update—which brings a long-awaited Stories-like feature and an easier ability to tweet pictures and videos—has already started rolling out to users.

While the feature does bring the platform up to speed with social media rivals Instagram and Facebook, it still maintains an overall Twitter-vibe that makes it unique. Keep reading to see what the new changes look like.

https://twitter.com/Twitter/status/1105815777616191489

Users with the update can find the new changes by swiping left from the home screen of the Twitter app and gaining immediate access to the camera. If that doesn’t work for you, hold tight because the update is still rolling out and you may not be one of the lucky ones yet!

From within the camera, you can single click on Capture for a photo or hold for a short video, which can be up two minutes long. Tap the Live button to stream your video to Periscope.

Also new for Twitter, users can now create an overlay on just-taken photos, where you can add location, hashtags and text up to 280 characters. Currently, only photos taken within the Twitter app can be marked up, keeping in line with the platform’s “real” feel.

Perhaps the biggest difference between Twitter’s new function and its social media counterparts is that your new photos and videos are here to stay. While Facebook and Instagram Stories do provide more functionality when it comes to more design overlay options, they disappear after 24 hours.

If you’re already digging the updates, stay tuned because Twitter is promising this update is just one in a line of improvements and frankly, we can’t wait!

These Secret Codes Help You Find the Best Kids Shows to Watch on Netflix

What mother has not obsessed about the KonMari Kraze happening nowadays? I know last year when I bought the Marie Kondo Art of Tidying Up book that if her secret got out – the whole world will be watching & doing! I guess her secret is out because she has her own Netflix and even KonMari’d Jimmy Kimmel!

If you haven’t heard about the method it’s pretty simple. You put all your items out in one pile. You pick them up one by one and if they spark joy – you keep it! If it doesn’t? Then you toss it out. It sounds so simple until you really start digging into the dirty in your house. Needless to say, I got a bit violent when I was doing it. The old clothes that my kids refused to give away? Bye Bye. The belt from 1985 that my husband won’t lose? Adios.

From dishes to dog toys you pretty much can clean out the clutter. For me, it has to be tidy in my world! If my house is tidy and clear then so is my mind. It saves the stress level too. It’s so hard to really explain until you get ride down to it.

So.. my dear friend invited me over to play ‘pretend’ Marie Kondo with her. We did it how real moms do. LEGO’S? You don’t even wanna know. Pokemon? Yep. There’s an issue there too. Hell hath no fury than a mom who stepped on a LEGO.

What do you get when you cross a two-century-old sci-fi book with modern technology? The Frankenstein 200 online science game for kids! Way back in 1818 Mary Shelley’s iconic “Frankenstein” delighted readers, treating them to a fantastical world where science intersected with humanity. Well, now researchers at Arizona State University want your kiddo to explore the world of science through this time-tested tale.

photo: Alice Perry/Forbidden Planet

So what is Frankenstein200? It’s a multimedia project funded by the National Science Foundation. While it doesn’t have the fright of Shelley’s scary story, it does use the concept of ‘Frankenstein’ to help teach children about scientific concepts, robotics and bioengineering.

Instead of Victor (Frankenstein), the game follows Tori Frankenstein. Um, who’s Tori? No, she’s not a lesser-known player in the original tale. Instead, she’s a new character who also happens to be Victor’s descendant.

Through the gaming world, kids can enter Frankenstein’s Laboratory for Innovation and Fantastical Exploration (LIFE) and help researchers to solve a science-y mystery.

The game gives players the chance to make discoveries as they dive into the hidden realms of science, watch videos, get emails from the cast of characters, take quizzes and (of course) play games. Oh, and this game doesn’t just live in the virtual world. Frankenstein200 has at-home in-real-life activities for kids to do too.

This isn’t a one time and you’re done kind of game. It takes players 30 days to complete. Yes, 30 days. The free game digs deep into subjects such as scientific ethics and artificial intelligence—meaning it’s not for the ‘little kid’ set. The recommended age range for this online experience is 10 to 14-years.

It’s World Turtle Day! If you’re ready for an afternoon of shellish fun for all then read our five steps for budding slowpokes below. The best part of this transformation? It’s turtle-y homemade. Scroll down slowly for more.

photo: Adam Tuttle via flickr

1. Build your shell with a cardboard box. Cut some arm and leg holes so your kiddo can retreat into his or her shell with ease. For a bigger shell, use cushions from your couch to build a home big enough for everyone to join in! For a simpler design, use a backpack. The bigger the better of course, but the key here is to protect the back from exposure.

2.With summer sun rolling in, this is the perfect time to be a turtle! Bask in the sun by the pool or in your backyard. Just remember to wear sunscreen because as appealing as being a turtle is today, leather skin isn’t. (Okay, so this one you have to leave your house for this one).

3. Many turtles display net-digging behavior. They tend to build a chamber as deep as their hind legs can go, so hit up the beach or a sandbox for a day of fun. Of course, a turtle’s hind legs are much shorter than your reptilian-to-be, but we’re sure the digging will be just as fun.

4. Although they seem rather slow, turtles are great navigators. They can easily climb through rough territory or walk around an obstacle. Head to the playground to develop those exceptional outdoor skills, but remember to do it all slowly and carefully. It’s the key to being safe.

5. Turtles are unique feeders. Depending on the species, they can be carnivores, herbivores or omnivores! Some even show tendencies to be carnivores as hatchlings before becoming herbivores as adults. But you know what’s not in their diet? Processed foods (although pizza might be okay). So if your little one is all for eating a turtle-diet, make sure they get their fill by eating whole and clean foods.

What meal do you plan for your “turtles”? Let us know in the comments below!

Whether it’s a Friday night tradition or an extra special treat, pizza is one of the few foods everyone seems to agree on. But forget Pizza Hut—today’s kids are asking for deep-dish, gluten-free and even wood-fired. And lucky for us, the Emerald City keeps serving up more great spots to get our fill. We’ve broken down some of our area’s finest pizzerias, so you can spend less time browsing Yelp reviews and more time digging in. Flip through the gallery for our picks.

Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria

With multiple locations around Seattle, Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria is always just a stone's throw away. And not only does their pizza taste like a slice of Italian heaven, but Tutta Bella is just as kid-friendly as it is delicious. From the Wikki Stix that are passed out to keep hangry kiddos busy to their open kitchens that allow kids to watch as their pizzas are being made, Tutta Bella is an easy restaurant to dine at with kids in tow.

Good to Know: Ask for their seasonal specials; they're seriously impressive. If you're in the mood for a hand-crafted cocktail, they have an incredible selection to choose from. We recommend the Sofia. And if your sidekick has a sweet tooth, (and what kid doesn't?) be sure to try their gelato.

The Digs: By now you know that gourmet donuts and tight quarters go hand in hand (this one’s a mere 600 square feet), but it’s a cozy, bright space.

Kids outgrow (and wear out) their shoes faster than you ever thought possible. Passing shoes down to the next generation is always a great idea, but sometimes the shoe won’t fit. If you’ve got a pair or two of tiny shoes hanging around the house, try one of these clever ways to reuse them. Scroll down for the details.

Rainboot Shoe Planter
You may have seen other shoes used as planters but the rainboot is the best because of its depth and water proof-ness. All you need to do is drill a small hole or two in the bottom to let water drain, fill up with a light potting mix and plant. We recommend planting a small annual flower, like johnny-jump-ups, or something that doesn’t require a ton of growing space like a succulent.

Baby Shoe Pincushion
We are in love with Wendy at
Handmade Harbour and her many amazing ideas, but we find her baby shoe-into-a-pincushion plan too cute to resist. Preserve that tiny shoe for years to come by getting the tutorial here.

Shoe Door Stop
This works great for a single shoe that has more life in it than it’s companion (in other words, the one with less of a hole in it), and ideally a boot of some kind. You’ll need an old pair of tights or trouser socks: something on the thinner side is best. Fill it up with pea gravel or sand (putting this in a sock helps prevent curious hands from digging in). Tie the sock off well and slide into the shoe: be sure to put the knotted end into toe. Voila!
