In response to the coronavirus pandemic, Disney is releasing non-medical, reusable cloth faces masks to keep kids and parents safe. Of course, they wouldn’t be Disney without a little magic!

The character-themed masks will feature fan faves from Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars lines. Edward Park, senior vice president, Disney store and shopDisney states, “Our hope is that Disney’s cloth face masks featuring some of our most beloved characters will provide comfort to the families, fans and communities that are so important to us.”

In addition to offering the new masks for sale, Disney will also be donating one million cloth masks to families in vulnerable and underserved communities. The masks will be distributed in partnership with Atlanta-based humanitarian aid organization, MedShare.

Finally, Disney plans to donate all profits of mask sales in the U.S. to MedShare, up to $1 million. The donations will occur from until Sept. 30, 2020.

The masks will come in small, medium and large sizes, with plenty of patterns to choose from! Additionally, they are in alignment with the FDA’s recommendations on non-surgical, non-industrial grade face masks.

All Disney cloth face masks are available for pre-order now in packs of four on shopDisney.com in the U.S., and are estimated to ship in June.

*Editor’s Note: According to the CDC, children under age 2, or anyone who has trouble breathing, is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance should not use a cloth face covering.

When I think about how I want my kids to see the world, I am usually intimidated at such a heavy and daunting parenting responsibility. But what I do know is that I want to primarily emphasize what we all have in common, and not what makes us different. In a world where everyone needs to be labeled, categorized, and take the “Which Disney character are you” quiz on IG, I want my kids to recognize that, while they are unique in some ways, they might have more in common with a kid half-way across the world than they think.

We live in a country divided, so as a mom, I know it starts with me to set the example, which is not always so simple. It’s easy to fall back on labels and even use them as excuses. I am old, so I can’t use my phone. I am an introvert, so I can’t go to your party. I understand why we all want to classify ourselves as Millennials, Gen Z, etc., but let’s all take a step back and look at each other without that filter. Sure it makes things a little harder and you might have to dig a little deeper, but I think it’s worth it.

There was a year when I lived in Los Angeles while my husband and five-year-old lived in Boston, and I remember searching for ways to soothe my soul while I was away. I would tell myself, and sometimes my son, when we talked on the phone at night, “We are both looking at the same moon every night and when I look up there I think of you and know we are still connected.” Not sure if I blew his mind with my deep thoughts but it did somehow help with the distance and pain of being away from my family. A little cheesy, sure, but I feel like when we fall back on what we have on common, everyone wins.

Just like everyone else, I also see differences on some of my tougher days—I notice how much older I am than most people in the room, how quiet I am, how I always seem to be one step behind everyone else, how little I know about what is cool, or not cool, and how much more I enjoy potato chips than most. But digging in and revealing some of my quirks and personality traits, both good and bad, can be interesting and rewarding.

As I peel away my introvert, Gen X, mom-of-two-boys label and take a little break from rolling my eyes at any sort of emotional expression, I might expose any of the following characteristics to someone, the sum of which does not fit into a tidy label. As mentioned before but worth mentioning again—I love all kinds of potato chips, but hate it when people eat them around me. I will always love a good latte, going to the library on Saturdays and the fact that the librarians know my name (rock star nerd). I don’t understand or pretend to think face tattoos are cool. I daydream about volunteering for Search and Rescue and hate getting up early. When I was younger I never really wanted to be married, or a mother. My favorite time is Sunday mornings when I make endless pancakes for the kids (I have a 15-year-old). I have an amazing older sister (who everyone thinks is younger) who has seen me through my darkest days as well as her own. I am so tired of the word “self-care.” I am very nostalgic about 80’s movies and old horror movies. I fall down…a lot. Snowboarding has brought me my husband, a broken arm and boundless joy. I love a good cheese plate. I let both kids watch Dunkirk, and still question my judgment when my nine-year-old mentions it in conversations. My happiest places are the mountains, and also in bed, in my pajamas, with a great book. I really don’t like most viral videos and museums. I have a fear of small spaces and drowning. I am terrible at geography. Some days I think I could be best friends with Jamie Lee Curtis—we could chat about horror movies and embracing grey hair and wrinkles—and am only slightly obsessed with meeting Trevor Noah—we would talk about his mother, of course. I have a photographic memory. I think anyone who says they love kale is lying. I can be super awkward and somedays just want people to hear what is going on in my head so I don’t have to speak. My nine-year-old is on his iPad so much that I am scared but yet can’t seem to enforce a limit with any consistency. I don’t care what people think of me the majority of the time, and then there are days where I just want everyone to like me.

Go ahead and try it. The minute you step out of that box, you open yourself up to endless possibilities and connections. I am pretty sure all the things I mentioned above are not unique to me. Okay maybe the Jamie Lee Curtis/Trevor Noah thing is a little out there, but relying on stereotypes and labels really won’t get us anywhere. I’ll try to continue finding commonalities to show to my kids, and some days it will be easier than others, but it can simplify things in a way that opens up the world to them. And maybe if that new kid they just met looks different, talks different, or eats different food, they will see past that, and realize we are all just humans.

I am a mom, a film/tv editor, potato chip lover, and former New England girl turned Southern California resident. Interests include trail running, hiking, snowboarding, and photography. I have two boys who keep me young, and motivated to do well in this world.

On a recent trip to the Happiest Place on Earth, Red Tricycle came across some exciting new finds. Most notably, an entire line of Disney leggings!

A few years back, the magic guru partnered with then-popular Lularoe and developed an entire line dedicated to Disney. It looks like in the years since, they’ve embarked on their own lineup with tons of whimsical patterns that Disney enthusiasts will love.

The buttery-soft leggings have a little bit of a smaller waistband then their predecessors, but all the same comfort and style. The cozy pants are everything a park-goer wants on a busy day riding attractions. Who wants to let a bothersome waistband get in between you and that Mickey pretzel?

There were so many patterns, we had a hard time choosing our faves. Some of the most fun included sweet Winnie the Pooh, Mickey Ears and famous sidekicks like Hei Hei, Sleeping Beauty pals and those adorable Mary Poppins penguins.

Would you just look at these fun leggings? All the most amazing Disney attractions, including Big Thunder, the Haunted Mansion and the Jungle Cruise come together on these one-of-a-kind pants.

We also fell in love with these super fun Toy Story leggings, as well as the classic titles leggings which is super reminiscent of your proud display of Disney VHS tapes.

\

We can’t forget our fave cats and dogs! No matter which you prefer, there’s something for every kind of animal lover.

Perhaps our fave are these spooky Haunted Mansion leggings. The wallpaper-themed pants are a nice neutral color that can be worn year-round, as they should be!

You can find tons of options when you visit a Disney park or by heading to Shop Disney. Sizes range from XS to Plus 3x and range from $24 (sale) to $40 each.

When the late comedian Robin Williams’ daughter Zelda used the “Which Disney Character Are You?” filter something pretty special happened—the filter chose the Genie from Aladdin!

While most of us don’t stand a chance of getting our father’s character’s filter, Zelda clearly does. As most Disney, and Williams, fans know, the late actor voiced the beloved character in the 1992 iconic animated flick.

One fan commented, “That’s awesome. Divine intervention for sure” and another wrote, “More like Pops saying hello.”

Here’s How You Can Buy Hand-Me-Down Kids’ Clothes from the Kardashians

Dear Confessional,

I am not a morning person at all. It’s actually really bad. Let me take you through a brief history of my wake ups. As a kid, I used to iron grip my covers over my face to shut out the sunlight, because it was so warm and cozy under those sheets. I battled the repeat attempts to wake up until I was on the verge of serious lateness. My dad used to try and “peel” me out of bed and literally drag me into the bathroom because I gave him “dead legs” and refused to walk. I would hold onto doorframes just to prove my point that I preferred to be in bed, not getting ready for school. He even tried waking me up with wet cotton ball drips in my ear and on my face to wake me up, which just pissed me off—nothing worked well.

Over time, he avoided the fights all together and wouldn’t utter a word. He would quietly remove the covers, slide my feet to the edge of the bed (as I continued sleeping, of course), sit me up, drag me into the bathroom (with a quick grab of the doorway for dramatic effect), prop me up against the sink, turn on the light, and close the door. Done. Yes, I did sleep while sitting up on the toilet for a bit, but I eventually managed to get myself to school on time.

So naturally, one would only expect that my children would avoid the morning routine like the plague. I do have to give them credit, though, because they are much better than I—thank goodness!

I have been through most of the school morning drama by now, with children ranging from 3- to 10-years old. Yes, I am fully aware that the pre-teen years don’t even come close. Believe me, I’m starting to see it already. Anyway, I digress…

Since I am queen of the anti-morning routine and master of the snooze button, I decided to find a way to wake up the kiddos without a fight or a fuss. As determined as I am, I did find a few—and of course, I will share.

Meaningful call-to-action

The call-to-action is your most important driving force. What I mean is that a quick wake up with a smile is virtually impossible, UNLESS, there is a really good reason. Creativity, my friends, creativity!

Here are my top five tips:

1. When in doubt, play it out. Such an enormous request from your tired little ones must be worth it. One option is to wake them up with a fun game that has a time limit. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT pit the kids against each other, or you will end up with a morning rivalry that will send you running for another cup of coffee and some chocolate before breakfast. Make it an individual game for all.

Here’s one: Walk into the room, turn on the lights, and ask your little ones to get out of bed and line up on the floor in front of you in the best statue of an animal, Disney character, or anything else. Close your eyes and tell them you will count to whatever number you choose (change it every day for variety), and then guess their pose when you open your eyes. Sounds silly, but it works every time. Kids unbelievably run out of bed and start their day with laughter and a smile, especially if there are multiple siblings. Over time, the results may nearly always have something to do with pooping, farting, or butts—but they ultimately get out of bed for a laugh.

2. Eye on the prize. You could also make a time limit to get fully dressed for a small reward of your choice (i.e., an activity, chance to play outside before leaving for school, or even a tiny morning treat). You know your kids, so do what works. Help him/her win, but do the time limit thing again that is secretly stretchable. After a while, they will do this to see if they meet the time, and your reward can disappear.

3. Guess what?! A third idea is to simply wake up with humor and a secret. This works especially well with the older kids. Walk into the room with an exciting anecdote about anything (i.e., something you remember, something that happened, or your faux pas from the other day).  Waking up can be serious business and can turn ugly quick— so remember to tread lightly, my friend!

The next goal is to get your child out of the snuggly sleeping position with a mention, “Oh, I have something really [fill it in—important, funny, silly, scary, etc.] to tell you. First, you need to sit up and I’ll give you a hint. You’ll really want to hear this!” After your hint, complete the story only when the child visibly starts getting ready. Then find anything to tell them, but make it worth it. Curiosity gets them every time, especially when you change it up and make it fun and interesting.

4. Always wear your best smile. Last—and most important—no matter what you do, fight your anxious urge to speed up the morning and rush your kids out of bed in haste. This is the biggest time drainer and ultimately a timeliness death trap! Code red on the “get out of bed now, we’re late” talk. The struggle, resistance, annoyance, and sloth-like behavior will only result and cast a dark cloud on your morning, beware! Remember, no matter what: stay light, funny, playful, positive, and thankful for their considerate pace.

5. Star awards. If you plan on turning your peaceful and punctual morning into the new mainstay, make sure to praise, praise, praise! After the morning hustle at home, give your child a verbal or tangible “Star Award” (i.e., waking up with a smile, getting dressed quickly, no whining, eating a good breakfast, cleaning up after eating, sharing with siblings, helpfulness). These positive acknowledgements, as part of your morning routine, not only demonstrate your appreciation for even the smallest positive behavior, but also help to build self-esteem that your child will continue seeking. This routine also serves to start a positive day, no matter how the morning transpired. I typically do this during the car ride to school. Start off with an announcement and clues about the child, and then reveal his/her name at the end. We all celebrate top effort with a round of applause, and my kids feel so proud. At the end, they even make sure to include me in an award announcement too.

So that’s it. Adjust those top five strategies as you need, and you will experience a happier, more peaceful, and timely morning with your kiddos. I hope this helps ease your morning hustle and flips those wake-up frowns upside down. Until next time…

With Love,

Ruthi
