The Supermoon is coming on June 24, but there’s no way it will be as eye-catching as this new Krispy Kreme creation! To celebrate the last giant moon of 2021, you can preorder your Strawberry Supermoon donuts or grab them in the store for one day only this Thursday.

Almost too pretty too eat, the new donut is filed with strawberry kreme, dipped in strawberries and kreme icing and topped with graham cracker “moon dust.” You can snag a special dozen with six original and six Supermoon donuts if you preorder by June 23 at noon.

You can save your sugary creation and stargaze on Thursday night to see the “strawberry supermoon” rise in the sky. It’s a low full moon that typically has a golden color and will be visible just after sunset. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the moon name has been used by Algonquin, Ojibwe, Dakota, and Lakota peoples, among others, to mark the ripening of “June-bearing” strawberries that are ready to be gathered.

We’re not sure what celestial treat Krispy Kreme has up its sleeve next, but we can’t wait to see! Enjoy that summer night in style this Thursday.

Starbucks New Espresso Drinks Are Shaken, Not Stirred

If you’ve read one fairytale, you’ve read them all when it comes to stepmothers. The words “evil” and “stepmother” are pretty much interchangeable. But is the stereotype true?

Who can forget Cinderella? Her real name was actually Ella, but her stepmother and sisters gave her the horrible nickname because she slept next to the fireplace and was permanently dirty from burned coal dust.

What about Snow White? This paragon of beauty was sent out with a hunter and her stepmother demanded her heart in a box to prove that he had murdered her in the woods. What in the actual &%$#…??

So what does it mean to be a stepmother today in a so-called “blended family,” words that describe the common occurrence of spouses having children in their homes that aren’t related to them by blood?

Well, I should hope that stepmothers are not trying to get their stepchildren killed these days, but how much involvement should stepmothers have in the way their partner parents his own child?

It gets tricky when you’re in a blended household as children who have been brought up differently by their parents are now under the same roof and suddenly need to follow the same rules. To make the transition easier, it’s best to knock out these rules before you move in together.

But who makes the rules and whose existing rules stick? Can the biological parent override the stepparent, or are all the parents in the house treated equally? And if a stepparent has no kids of their own, is that person’s opinion about discipline automatically discounted?

For a blended family to work, all the children’s parents need to come together and agree on the fundamental rules of parenting, regardless of who gave birth to whom. Simple things like TV time, behavioral expectations, homework, eating habits, etc., need to be discussed and presented as a united front.

And the unit of parents must unanimously agree on discipline and who implements it. The general consensus is that biological parents do the hardcore discipline for big issues like sex, drugs, rock n roll, but any of the subsidiary parents can discipline over general issues like wet towels on the floor.

If one parent needs to travel for work and the other parent will be alone with all the kids, children should be given the choice of going to their other biological parent for that period. It is always good for children to spend time with their parents, regardless of custody arrangements.

Special care must be taken not to favor your biological child over the rest. When in the same house, all children should be treated equally by all the adults raising them. What’s good for one should be good for the next—no exceptions—where possible while taking age into account.

Children who go to other parents on weekends and come back with expensive gadgets and toys may create feelings of resentment amongst their stepsiblings. If one parent enjoys spoiling the child they see less often by buying expensive things, the rule should be that they keep it at their own house.

Stepmothers should also not cross lines when it comes to the child’s relationship with their biological mother. Same with stepfather and biological fathers. Many beautiful relationships have grown from a new stepparent opening their home up to their partner’s ex on special holidays for the good of the children.

There need not be any jealousy involved, and your partner’s kids or ex are not your competition. Remind him about their birthdays and school events. If one of them seems down, approach them with kindness and ask if you can help or if they want to speak to another parent. Dial their mom/dad for them.

Involve your children in decision-making about the holidays, new home, getting a pet, and even adding another baby to your brood. Sit down and hear them out. Children who are allowed to say their piece will feel heard and loved, even if the family votes a different way.

When they reach teenagehood, have another family meeting and discuss living arrangements. Some kids might move to the other parent for school/college or just for a change. Support their decisions and stay in touch. Their moving out is not about you, so don’t make things awkward.

Ultimately, being a stepparent can be as simple or as difficult as all the parties involved choose to make it. Ask yourself how you would have wanted to be treated as a child or teenager, and then treat them like that. At the end of the day, children living in your home are your responsibility, blood or not.

If the children are missing a parent through abandonment or death, then you need to step up without stepping in. What that means is that you support them as a good parent would without trying to fill their bio parent’s shoes or take up space they haven’t offered up yet.

Remember, a well-loved child is a gift to the world.

A cluttered and dusty bedroom is a stressful bedroom. So many of us rationalize not bothering with spending a lot of effort clearing the bedroom “because the kids will just mess it up tomorrow and no one ever sees it.” But you see it and your family see it. Every day and every night and consciously or subconsciously, a disorganized bedroom has an impact on how you start and end the day.

There is always yet another chore left for “next weekend” calling to you from some corner of your home but both parents’ and children’s bedrooms should be top of the list. This is the place where you want your family to feel calm, relaxed, and peaceful. It should be clean and orderly, laying the foundation for a good night’s rest.

1. Start by Creating Storage That Works
One of the major culprits of clutter, besides lack of time during the daily grind, is inefficient storage space. Adding more designated homes for your family’s things ensures not only a cleaner space but also an easier time finding what you need and putting things away. Plastic storage bins and over-the-door organizers are inexpensive fixes to piles of seasonal clothes and shoes. For a more permanent fixture, consider adding floating shelves and modular closets to utilize more vertical space. These are great for holding more than just clothes: jewelry, shoes, handbags, toys, sports gear, workout equipment, and office supplies (if an office is the parents’ bedroom as has become the case for many this last year). Furthermore, modular storage units are customizable and can fit in any sized space.

2. Declutter Your Closet Items before You Put Them Back
Before you refill a newly redesigned closet with all of your stuff, it’s time to sort. Use the “Three-Bin Method.” Get three large plastic bins and label one “Love,” another “Donate,” and the last one “Undecided.” Obviously, anything that mom, dad or the kids enjoy and wear on a regular basis goes into the “Love” bin, and things that they dislike or have not worn in over a year go into the “Donate” bin. For items that are harder to part with (but aren’t necessarily needed), store them in the “Undecided” bin and hide them away for three to six months. Chances are the attachment will disappear by then. If it doesn’t, then keep that item. Toss out anything damaged or worn out.

Once the closet is sorted, you can add some extra pieces to organize stuff, in ways you might not have thought of: plastic storage bins are inexpensive fixes for out-of-season clothes, shoes, and accessories. Put away items that you don’t need in the current season, neatly and tidily. That way, they’re easy to find and ready to come out next season!

  • A shoe organizer that hangs on the back of the closet door doesn’t have to be for shoes! They’re also great for costume jewelry, makeup, hosiery/socks, small toys such as action figures or legos, crayons, craft materials, and more.
  • Hooks for scarves, handbags, backpacks, and caps ensure that you can see all your favorites, and don’t end up cluttering the closet floor.
  • Add dividers into dresser drawers. Dresser drawers are the bane of many families’ existence. Why bother folding clothes if they mess up anyways every time you pull an outfit out to get dressed? Drawer dividers are a perfect solution for keeping clothes separated and nice and neat. Use anything from plastic grid inserts to fabric bins and DIY cardboard compartments to categorize belongings.
  • Store jewelry, makeup, and other small items in shallow canning jars, tin muffin pans, and cutlery trays. For a creative flare, align the inside of the drawers with colorful, heavy-duty wrapping paper or cardstock paper before installing the dividers.

3. Give Your Bedroom a Deep Clean
In addition to avoiding clutter, you want the space your family spends 6-8 hours a night in to be pristine and clean.

  • If you have carpeting, get it steam cleaned, including inside the closet and under the furniture.
  • Flip and clean the mattresses: sprinkle it with baking soda, leave it for an hour or so and then vacuum up the powder. The soda will soak up any odors and the vacuuming will pick up dust mites and dead skin. If you don’t have one already, a mattress cover can go a long way to keeping your mattress clean and fresh.
  • Clean all bedding. Even most throw pillows can go for a refresh in the dryer, to help get rid of any dust or dirt. The pillows you sleep on should be washed at least twice a year.
  • Replace pillows regularly—they get flat and their support weakens—and mattresses every 7-10 years.
  • Address window treatments and overhead fans or lights. These need to be cleaned and dusted thoroughly. If you are planning to wipe down the walls, start at the top and work your way down. Crown molding also needs a swipe!
  • Clean under the bed and move furniture such as dressers etc. so you can clean underneath and behind and get the piles of dust bunnies that tend to collect there.

Now that you’ve organized and cleaned your bedroom, your family can look at it as a nightly retreat, a place to relax and unwind, letting go of the day’s stresses and looking forward to a deep and restful slumber. Sweet dreams!

13 Creative Tooth Fairy Ideas for Parents

Believing in the Tooth Fairy Is Good For Your Little One’s Oral Health

New Poll Sheds Light On How Much the Tooth Fairy Is Willing to Give

I am a grown adult and like many out there I have struggled to keep a clean home.  After being a stay-at-home wife and mother for nearly 10 years you would think I would have my act together which is laughable. Stay-at-home wives or mothers should all get awards for the work that they do even on their worse days. Really any parent should. There are no days off and the skills that you develop and bring to the table are over qualifying for many workplace jobs.

But that does not mean that sometimes we are self-doubting and feeling down that our efforts are not seen. One of the tasks that seem to do that the most for us is keeping up with the housework. Over the last year with lockdowns and restricting us to being at home all day long has only added to the workload in some cases.

I have terrible indoor allergies. With everyone being home so much, creating more dirt and dust along with stirring it up more, I have been miserable, to say the least. To add to the buildup of cleaning, it is difficult to do so with virtual learning going on and having to encourage a quiet learning environment for my easily distracted second-grade child. All with a too eager to help and be included three-year-old.

But through creativity and inspiration, I believe I have finally found a solution to all! Like I mentioned before I have an easily distracted child at home that I was at my wit’s end with. Trying to keep him on task was difficult. Finding solutions to help him with his focus, I, in turn, have found a way to do so for myself.

Enter lists! I know it seems kind of silly. Believe me, I thought it was too, but cleaning things as I noticed that they have not been cleaned in a while and ignoring some important things was leading to health problems and concerns for myself. With the sideways looks everyone gives and gets if someone sneezes or coughs being in public was getting hard. So, like just about anyone else does nowadays I searched Pinterest. Not for allergy remedies because I have already tried those but how to keep a clean home.

Now of course feel free to edit this schedule as you need to for yourself and your lifestyle by all means. I surely did to work around my children’s soccer schedule and family time together but here’s my schedule.

Daily Tasks: Make beds, do dishes, and straighten up. For the rest I try to go off the instructions below.

Mondays:  Master Bedroom Day • dust • clean mirrors • clean fan • vacuum/sweep • declutter (no more than 10 mins) • laundry—bedding. After roaring and ripping all weekend whether at home or out on the go it feels good to reset the bedroom and have a clean fresh start to the week.

Tuesdays: Bathrooms Day • clean showers and tubs • clean toilet • clean sink, counter, and faucet • clean mirror • sweep and mop floors • restock toiletries • laundry—towels. Often times we host family or friends on the weekend so the bathroom needs a little cleaning up after.

Wednesdays: Kitchen Day • clean out refrigerator • wipe down counters • wipe down the table and chairs • sweep and mop floors • laundry—whites. Trying to reduce our footprint, we try to use as many reusable items as we can such as cleaning the floors with washable reusable floor pads and using bar rags to wipe everything down.

Thursdays: Living Room Day • dust • clean tv • refresh fabrics • sweep/vacuum floors • declutter (again no more than 10 mins) • laundry—lights. At this point, the weekend is starting to creep up on us again and even if we don’t host company it’s nice to enjoy the weekend in a clean area.

Fridays: Alternates • Week 1: all appliances • Week 2: kitchen cabinets (go ahead and throw out those mix match Tupperware lids. You don’t need them!) • Week 3: windows • Week 4: baseboards • laundry—darks. These are the little things that often get ignored the most that make a big difference!

Saturday: Outside • clean up car • straighten up garage • sweep walkways • yard work • laundry—catch up. Depending on your weekend plans don’t feel guilty if some of these fall by the wayside especially in cooler months or rainy days. But a little effort goes a long way into making your home one of the best in the neighborhood.

Of course, all of these are just suggestions and there are always places for improvement. I understand many work on top of taking care of the home. If you are having a busier day or week than usual and can’t get to everything you shouldn’t feel guilty. The point is to manage your time easier where you can. The hands-on tasks are meant to take away from as little of your well-spent time as possible. Other than switching around laundry try to keep your tasks down to less than an hour for everything. Also, get the whole family involved. Find ways to make it a game and make it fun. If you can turn on your old school jams and rock out!

I am your average messy hair, coffee drinking, classy, sassy, stay at home mom. Trying to get the impossible done every day.

Dictionary Day is the perfect excuse to dust off your Webster’s (you still have those, right?) and learn a few things. We’ve got five easy-to-medium dictionary-based games that can be easily adapted for little literati of all ages. Read on to get the word.

Fictionary

Element5 Digital via Unsplash

Choose six to ten words your kid may not know. For each word, write out four possible definitions and have them vote on which one they think is the real definition. For little ones, keep it simple with one or two-word definitions and don't forget to add in at least one very silly one! For older kids, choose more difficult words and throw in a couple of “realistic” sounding definitions.

Dictionary for Beginners

Aaron Burden via Unsplash

Put that ABC song to the test with a simple word search. Teach dictionary use with starter words, like CAT, BALL or BUG. Give them one letter at a time to help them locate the word. Example: CAT. Have them look up the C, then the A, finally the T until they find it. They'll see the alphabet within the alphabet on every page.

Pictionary: 4 Ways

marimari1101 via Pixabay

Pictionary, light. Flip through the pages of a dictionary, and have your littles place their finger on a word at random. Work together or on your own to draw the word you’ve landed on (let's hope you get castle and not existentialism.).

Pictionary, advanced. You’ll need at least four players for this one. Using a dictionary, one member of the team chooses a word at random (see flip method above). Their next task is to draw the word they picked, hoping their team member guesses it (Not unlike the board game by the same name.). Teams take turns, and each member alternates drawing. You can up the ante by adding a time limit to the drawing.

Variation: If the drawing team’s mate doesn’t guess, the opposing team gets one guess at it.

Variation 2: You'll need five people. Have one person be the random word generator. They can either write or show the word to the player whose drawing. This role is best played by mom or dad.

Fake It Up

Have the kiddos make a word up and then explain or write the definition out to you. Example: decision-ing. What a four-year-old says when he is trying to decide between two equally fun ideas (ice cream vs. cake, bath vs. shower, etc.).
