In many ways, blended families are just like any “traditional” family. There are conflicts, chaos, understanding and a whole lot of love to go along with it. While there are many different definitions of a blended family, a blended family is any family in which there are people who aren’t traditionally or biologically related to each other. Whether that means an extended tree of relatives involved in your nuclear family, step-moms and step-dads, half-siblings—you name it! But no matter how your family is blended, the most important part of the phrase isn’t the blending—it’s the family.

Whether your blended family is newer or you’re simply looking for techniques to help your already existing family thrive, there are so many ways to improve your family’s function. Really, helping a blended family thrive has a lot in common with what you’d do to help any family thrive. While, of course, every family is unique, blended families are a part of that idea. There are so many ways you can ensure that you’re doing the best for your family and that they’re all participating in seeing your family thrive. Here are a few ways you can make that happen.

1. Be Patient
If your blended family is a more recent introduction to everyone’s lives, patience can be a virtue for everyone. A shift in your family can be a lot to adjust to, no matter how old you are, especially if you don’t have much of a say in the matter. Be patient with everyone who is spending some time and energy adjusting, and be patient with yourself, too.

2. Set Boundaries
Different families have different standards for boundaries, and when you enter a new family situation, it’s important to re-establish boundaries and communicate what makes everyone feel the most comfortable. Especially when it comes to kids living with new people while they begin to understand their autonomy, they should know that they have the right and responsibility to set the boundaries they need.

3. Work on Communication
Working on open communication is crucial in any family, but especially in a blended family, where people have different backgrounds, experiences, ideas and boundaries. You don’t always know how the different members of your family are used to talking about things, so it can be highly beneficial to talk about your feelings as a group and make sure everyone is comfortable and taken care of.

4. Have Family Meetings
One of the best venues for communication is the family meeting. Especially if you have a larger family, a meeting could be a great way to get everyone together in one place so everybody can be involved in communication and decision-making. Family meetings are some of the best places to talk about everything from big to small.

5. Give Space When Necessary
Families are close, but that doesn’t mean you always need to be on top of each other all the time. Whether you’re dealing with kids’ feelings, yours or your partners, space can sometimes be the answer to a lot of the anxieties and overwhelming situations that can come with a new family. Of course, families stick together through thick and thin, but people need space to process things, too.

6. Practice Autonomy
From bodily autonomy to setting boundaries, this one can be especially important for kids in a new environment. Even if you know everyone around you is safe and well-intentioned, it’s important to make sure your kids know they always have a say in what happens to them and that they can set the boundaries they need to feel comfortable.

7. Be Realistic
One great thing to keep in mind about blending a family is that not everyone will get along swimmingly all the time right away. Some siblings will fight like siblings, there might be disputes here and there and there might be some awkwardness. Blending doesn’t always mean that things are peachy. Families have rough patches, and it’s important to be realistic and not expect perfection.

8. Start New Traditions Together
One of the best ways to get families to connect is through traditions. This is a place where you can really have fun with things. You can take your traditions in any direction you want—from family game nights to camping trips, to special holiday activities. Traditions are a way for everyone to have fun together, and what could be more special than that?

Helping Your Blended Family Thrive
Helping your blended family thrive is a lot like you’d help any family thrive—with a whole lot of love, effort and communication. And while it might not always be easy, it’ll always be worthwhile when you see everyone connecting and building new relationships together. Whether you place emphasis on family meetings, new traditions or setting boundaries, there are so many ways you can build your family up, together.

Wow, What an adventure we’ve been on since the day he was conceived! I thank God everyday for blessing me with his super active energy (wonder where he gets it from? And now to meet our healthy baby boy?! Thankful. Blessed. Now it’s party of 5 baby!”

Milian continued with a sweetly sentimental shout-out to Pokora, “Thank you my @mattpokora for being the best partner/dad/ best friend a woman could ask for. You’re a king in my eyes.” Pokora also shared a beautiful baby pic on IG in black and white, adding his newborn news in French.

Congrats to Milian, Pokora and their new party of five!

17 Ways to Keep Your Kid Busy in an Airport

Three meals a day may not be enough to cover a child or teen’s nutrition needs to grow, learn, and stay active. An afternoon snack can help fill the gap. The questions to ask are: What foods do our kids really need? And how to make snacking healthy and prevent it from interfering with any of the three other daily meals? To find out the right answers, we asked the experts.

Do Kids Need a Snack?

Most experts agree that kids of all ages need an afternoon snack to fill the gap between lunch and dinner. What they eat and when can make a difference when it comes to keeping them attentive and energized throughout the day. That makes it a good reason for us as parents to plan for it and make snacking part of our kid’s daily eating schedule.

Public health experts consider that this afternoon snack still needs to combine nutrient-dense food items, like any meal, if we want to make sure that it actually benefits the child’s needs. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2020-2025 insist on nutrient-dense foods that provide vitamins, minerals, and other health-promoting components and have no or little added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium.

“As a general rule, ANSES, the French Agency for Food, Environmental, and Occupational Health & Safety, considers that it is preferable not to create opportunities for eating between formal meals (breakfast, lunch, “afternoon tea”, supper) particularly in view of the need to restrict excessive daily energy intake. ANSES thus recommends that food should only be served at school in the framework of a formal meal, such as breakfast or “afternoon tea”, and should not take the form of a separate snack,” reports Claire Bladier, a professional in nutrition research who collaborated with experts from ANSES.

What Are the Core Elements of a Healthy Snack?

Unplanned snacks tend to lead to the highest amounts of sugar, sodium, or fat. Fortunately, there are plenty of delicious and healthy snack options that you can easily stock up on. We asked Cecile Cottus, Registered Dietitian, to guide us in finding out the core elements that make up a healthy snack and that allow each family to make tailored and affordable choices that meet their preferences.

1. Focus on simple food ingredients. Whether you shop for ready-to-eat snacks or like to prepare homemade snacks, it all starts at the grocery store. When shopping, choose food items with the shortest nutrition labels, 5-6 ingredients maximum. This will help you stock up on nutrient-dense food items. Learn more about how to read ingredients labels in this article.

2. Cover a minimum of two food groups. A balanced snack will ideally combine a minimum of two food groups:

  • Grains with fruit or veggies
  • Grains with a dairy
  • Grains with cheese

3. Think outside the box. Be creative. Find and combine the simple food ingredients your kids already love. Treats can be part of your kid’s afternoon snack as long as you find a balance over the week. As an example, it can be ok to give your child a bar of chocolate if it comes with bread or another source of grains. This option can be healthier than serving a bar made out of a long list of ingredients you don’t know.

Once at school, your child will decide when to eat and how much, but by planning ahead and providing them with balanced meals, you can boost their brainpower and give them the energy they need without the rush on junk foods.

Ready to reinvent snacking in your house? Plan ahead, be creative and don’t forget to get your kids involved. Need some help to get started? Have a look at the snack category on Teuko.com.

As not only a Mom but also a Special Needs Mom, and many times there comes a point when you realize there are so many feelings bottled up—sometimes you need to let them out.

My knack for details is both a blessing and a curse; I notice little details, and I pick up on things that don’t even register to many people. My mind is a steel trap. I remember events, dates, comments like it’s nothing. So is my heart. I take everything to heart, and I keep it there—whether it deserves to stay or not.

I put my all into everything I do—it’s in my blood. It’s how I was raised. Whether it’s my family, my friends, my job—I dive in headfirst and give with my whole heart. I don’t say no easily or often, for that matter. I’m a people pleaser, and I’m loyal to a fault.

The problem is, with this type of personality, it’s also very easy to be walked all over; easily taken advantage of, or taken for a fool. However as quiet as I can be, I am anything but a fool. I notice everything. Every detail. Every smirk. Every wince. My husband has a personality that allows him to see micro-aggressions in all the interactions he has. I notice micro-rejections. I notice when people I care about don’t react the same to me as they do to other people that we both care about. I’ve noticed them since I was a child. I know immediately when someone is being genuine with me, and when someone is just “getting along to get along.”

I analyze everything. Every interaction in my life. My mind is always racing, and I can’t turn it off. Believe me, I try. The problem is, I always put it on myself. I often struggle to find the words to truly express my feelings, because I feel the energy I receive so strongly. I am a full-blown empath. I feel so deeply, yet I struggle to vocalize the true intensity of those feelings.

When I feel hurt by something or someone, I replay the situation in my head over and over—wondering what I could’ve done or said differently to reach a more favorable outcome. It’s taken a long time for me to realize—and will likely take me years to accept—that sometimes, I didn’t do anything wrong. In reality, not every person who acts nice toward you wants to be your friend. Not everyone has genuine intentions, and much as I want to see the best in everyone sometimes it’s just not there.

It’s so disheartening to see so much selfishness and manipulation in the world today and It breaks my heart this is the world my kids are growing up into. I want to be around forever to protect them from it. But the truth is, I can’t even protect myself. It breaks my heart that even in our Special Needs community, some of the very parents that are fighting for kindness, acceptance, and support for their kids, don’t do the same for other adults unless it benefits them. Through all of these experiences, I find myself still looking for the silver lining. And I remember someone I genuinely look up to saying to “Find The Joy.”

Remembering that, I appreciate even more that I have found a few amazingly supportive, truly genuine friends. The ones who check in on me when I haven’t been heard from in a few days, just to make sure I’m doing ok. The ones that know we’re struggling with lack of sleep and tough behaviors—and check-in to see if things have improved. I have been reminded, consistently, where to focus my time, energy, and love. It’s not the quantity of friendships and relationships in my life, it’s the quality.
