When you think of Henry Golding the word dad may not immediately come to mind. Even though he made a major name for himself as the over-the-top handsome, yet down to Earth for an uber-rich guy, love interest of Crazy Rich Asians, IRL Golding is now a devoted dad.

The Crazy Rich Asians star and wife Liv Lo welcomed their newborn last week. Golding recently posted a sweet Instagram pic of himself, Lo, and their new baby, captioning the black and white photo, “This woman right here. Beyond anything I could have ever imagined. Your strength brought us our greatest joy. Thank you, I love you.”

The actor’s wife also posted her own birth-day pics, sharing photos of herself at the hospital and in labor. Lo added, “On March 31st our lives changed forever. Link in bio of leaving Instagram for #maternityleave (for the time being). I’ll prob be up during midnight breastfeeds checking in on you, but otherwise “I’ll be back” xx.”

Lo, a fitness instructor and wellness entrepreneur, wrote about her decision to take time off after giving birth on her Fit Sphere website, “This simple knowing, that I can return to work and the world when I am ready gives me the power to direct my attention to what is most important to me. 40 days, or about 6 weeks postpartum, is the first postpartum exam with your OBGYN. Until this clearance happens I am not keen to get back to work or sharing with the world how I am feeling. This may come as a shock or disappointment; however, in my self-reflection, it has become clear that I need to set these boundaries for myself and my family.”

According to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, kids ages 11-to-14 spend, on average, 9 hours per day in front of a screen, and this is before COVID forced many to resort to the digital classroom for their educations. As schools open up across the country, the added hours due to screen-based education will be reduced, but 9 hours is still way too high according to most experts in the effects that technology has on children.

There are, of course, advantages that can be afforded to children via technology and screens, but if you fail to limit your child’s use, it can greatly affect them later in life.

Social Skills
Remember not having anything to do when you were younger? That really doesn’t exist for the generation raised with cell phones in their hands, because there is always some sort of digital entertainment at our fingertips. Ultimately, having “something to do” is a good thing, but when kids make digital entertainment and social media scrolling their go-to activities, rather than alternatives to deal with boredom, they lose the opportunity to simply be kids and interact with their peers.

There are differing professional opinions on whether or not tech leads to more cases of things like depression, as some children do find support and friends online, but a steady mix is needed, and online friends shouldn’t outnumber neighborhood pals.

Physical Fitness
Every other point on this list has some contrary points that show tech benefits (e.g., online friends), but there really isn’t a fair argument for screen time equating to better physical fitness. Even for infants, mental health and physical health are directly proportional, and staying fit helps youngsters stay positive and mentally engaged with things like schoolwork. Your child doesn’t have to love sports to stay active, and if she or he is a video game nut, introduce them to something like live-action role-playing, which is pretty much people acting out what happens in videogames (a Civil War re-enactment would be a common example, but they exist for pretty much any made-up world your child is interested in).

Family Issues
Screen time, especially that spent on videogames or virtual reality, can transport children into other worlds. Books can do this too, but it’s 2021 and that can be a tough sell to many youngsters (try though!). When issues happen at home, children often look to escape, and technology offers them a place to do this quickly and easily. However, many cases exist where children become completely withdrawn from the family and seek “home” in their digital worlds. To avoid this, it’s important to be honest and open about family problems, and schedule time every week to just talk and completely disconnect from the digital world.

Vision
Screen time can also lead to vision issues like blurry vision, double vision, and headaches caused by these things. Excessive screen time can also affect focus flexibility, which historically only affected the aging populations, and not children. When screen time is necessary, or allowed, engaging with the screen has less of a negative effect on vision when other lights are on, or natural light is coming into the space.

Toeing the Line
Ultimately, a little bit of screen time is a good thing. Computers are stimulating machines, and mental stimulation is important for mental development, but a child whose only interactions on a screen is a child who is going to have a lot of problems integrating into the real world. Limit the use, be open to discussions about the good and bad of tech, and encourage your children to spend time outside while their phones stay at home.

Chrissy Rucker

A first time mom and fitness enthusiast, trying to find balance between #momlife and my passion for fitness

Not only is the opportunity to be a mom a miracle in itself, but the way a woman’s body is able to change and prioritize the creation of life is simply beautiful. However, the reality is that postpartum isn’t always easy. A fitness enthusiast for over 5 years, I transformed by body to be as healthy and “”prepared” for baby when my husband and I decided to try and conceive. I was strong in the gym, my endurance was better than it ever had been—I loved my body!

My birth story is a little different than most. I delivered a micro-preemie at just 24 weeks via emergency C-section—my son arrived weighing just 1lb 10oz. I had gained 30lbs at this point and pairing weight gain with the painful recovery of a C-section, it took an extreme toll on my mental health. Regardless of my birth story, my postpartum struggles are like most new moms. Stress. Anxiety. Unfamiliarity with this new “”normal”” life. And like so many times before, fitness became my outlet.

But it was different…I had half the time, not much endurance, I lost nearly all my core strength and muscle tone and my body just didn’t move like it used to. For the first time in years, fitness was hard…really hard! But as moms do and do best…we adapt! We take charge and we forge on.

How I was able to take charge of my postpartum fitness journey:

Self-affirmations – My body may never be the same again, after all, it created a baby! But it is my body and I will love my body how it is.

Listen to your body – Instead of trying to fit myself into a thought of what I SHOULD be like postpartum, I let my body decide and take charge.

Nutrition – I ate with the main purpose of providing nutrients for my baby. Healthy carbs and fats such as oatmeal, eggs, lean proteins, and vegetables kept my milk supply up, and slowly allowed weight to come off.

Time – I used to know her, but not so much anymore. My workouts had to be simple, quick, and most times at home. I made sure to incorporate a balance of resistance band training along with free weights and cardio.

Stretch – Mobility is key, so I found stretching and keeping my body in motion was essential to a full and healthy recovery.
