Candace Ramirez

I am a mom & Lifestyle blogger from Portland, OR. I teach and empower other mamas that self-care isn't selfish. It is necessary. I love sharing real-life, fashion, and recipes.

I am always busy, and 90% of the time, I am busy taking care of others, making meals, helping with remote learning, cleaning, breastfeeding, or comforting someone. I used to think that to be an exceptional mom meant putting my needs and wants on the back burner. I found the more I ignored my needs the harder it was to be a good mom. I was more irritable with the kids and found it challenging to enjoy motherhood.

Before the pandemic, I considered self-care to be going out and doing activities with my friends, but I now know self-care can be as simple as making sure that I eat during the day or drink water.

I recently added bathes to my self-care routine. I create a relaxing spa-like environment with just a few essentials, candles, a bath bomb, bubbles, a glass of wine, and a good book. When I sink into the warm bath, all my stress eases away, and I can relax.

Whether your self-care is taking a relaxing bath, reading a good book, drinking water, or merely sitting down. I hope all you mamas out there are making sure to prioritize taking care of yourselves.

Check out all the products I use to create a spa-bath at home.

Editor’s note: This story is aimed to lower the chemicals you use in everyday life, such but please follow the CDC guidelines for keeping your home and surfaces disinfected and clean to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

If you’re on a mission to detoxify your home during this spring cleaning season, remember, there are some common household toxins that tend to go overlooked (did you know tea tree oils are a hidden toxin?). In order to make your home as safe as possible, cross-check our list of hidden toxins and chemicals in your home, and what you can use in their place.

iStock

Hidden Toxin: Bug Spray

What to do about it: It's a fact that bugs can be creepy, especially when they invade your home. But, according to the CDC, pesticides you can find at the store are one of the leading causes of poisoning. Instead, opt for natural solutions like cinnamon, essential oils or diatomaceous earth, which is basically tiny fossils that'll smother any bug problems.

Marco Verch via flickr

Hidden Toxin: Fluoride

What to do about it: According to naturopathic doctor John Dempster, research shows that the synthetic fluoride in our drinking water and toothpaste has been linked to cancer, thyroid and neurology problems. Install a water filtration system to rid your water of fluoride and other toxins and consider switching to a fluoride-free toothpaste.

kathycsus via flickr

Hidden Toxin: Bisphenol A (BPA)

What to do about it: You can find BPA hiding in plastic wrap, food packaging and reusable containers, baby bottles and water bottles. It’s best to switch to glass whenever possible as Time Magazine reported a growing concern from the National Toxicology Program regarding BPA exposure levels in babies and young children that could cause harmful brain and behavioral effects.

p.v via flickr

Hidden Toxin: Poisonous Houseplants

What to do about it: Who knew that decorative ivy growing just outside your home or philodendron displayed in an indoor pot can be poisonous to both your children and pets? There are dozens of houseplants to avoid for human and animal safety, including Ivy, Philodendron, Pothos, Arrowhead, Peace Lily, Dieffenbachia, Caladium, Mother-in-Law’s Tongue and Oleander.

shalommama via flickr

Hidden Toxin: Tea Tree Oils

What to do about it: While you may have an arsenal of essential oils for personal use, remember that your dogs and cats do not share the same oil love. Vets are seeing more and more animals brought in for issues related to essential oil use in the home, most popularly, from diffusing oils around them. The ASPCA even has a warning listed in their animal poison control info center: “We would not recommend using essential oils in areas where your pets have access unless pets are supervised or the use of the oil is approved by your veterinarian.” Be sure to stay away from tea tree, wintergreen, cinnamon, pine, eucalyptus, pennyroyal and citrus oils around pets, which are extremely toxic to your furry friends.

sophistichate via flickr

Hidden Toxin: Phthalates

What to do about it: This household toxin can be found in scented products like laundry detergent, dish soap and air freshener. Companies do not need to disclose what is in their fragrances by law, so unless you see scent ingredients listed on a label, it’s best to opt for fragrance-free whenever possible to eliminate the risk of phthalate exposure. You will also want to avoid plug-in air fresheners and aerosol sprays. The EWG warns of using these products as they can trigger allergies and often contain suspected endocrine disruptors.

Samantha Gades via Unsplash

Hidden Toxin: Scented Candles

What to do about it: Studies have found that as many as 30% of candles contain heavy metals (including lead!) in their wicks to make the wicks firmer, according to Thank Your Body. When burned, these lead-laden candle wicks release five times the amount of lead considered hazardous to kids! As an alternative, you can make your own simmering potpourri by boiling lemon, rosemary or other herbs, and cinnamon on the stove, or diffuse safe essential oils (see above!). But if candles are still your thing, that’s OK too! Just be sure to look for 100% beeswax candles with cotton wicks.

Shopify Partners via Burst

Hidden Toxin: Sodium Hydroxide

What to do about it: Sodium Hydroxide is also known as lye, and it can be found in oven cleaning solutions and drain opening liquids. It is extremely harsh and corrosive and can cause burns to skin and eyes. Best way to avoid this harmful toxin? Don't use it. Baking soda solutions work on grimy ovens just as well—they just require a little more elbow grease.

Target Wants to Make Buying Bras Easier with 3 New Size-Inclusive Lines

Target Plus Is the Big Red Bullseye Retailer’s Answer to Amazon

Sure, you want all the cute baby gadgets, outfits and other goodies. But do you and your baby really need them? Nope. Here are 15 baby products that moms agree you can leave off your registry, or at least wait to buy until you’re sure they’re something that will make your life better.

photo: Shaun Versey via Flicker

1. Newborn Shoes
When was the last time you saw a newborn baby strutting around in a brand-new pair of teeny tiny Converse? Yes, they’re beyond adorable, but after you spend 20 minutes shoving little toes into newborn baby shoes, you get to watch them get kicked off. Baby socks or footie PJs are way more practical and still super cute.

2. Lots of Fancy & Expensive Outfits
Sure, buying one or two stylish pieces for the going-home outfit or another special event can be worth it. But you’ll likely be hanging out at home for the first few weeks, so onesies and sleepers are more practical. Plus, baby duds get messy and clothes have a lifespan of about 15 minutes, so your money is better spent on other items.

3. Baby Detergent
You’ll be doing a lot of laundry once baby comes, and you don’t need to keep baby’s laundry separate to be cleaned with a special (and usually expensive) detergent. Buy a fragrance-free, dye-free detergent (look for “free and clear” on the label) and use it for the whole family’s wash.

photo: heymattallen via Pixabay

4. Changing Table
A changing table is just another piece of furniture to get rid of once your child is out of diapers. If space is tight, you can get by with just a travel changing pad. Or, if you have a dresser in the nursery, fasten a changing pad to the top for a makeshift changing table.

5. Nursing Cover
Cover up if you want, but don’t bother with a nursing cover. A thin baby blanket or a scarf do the same job, and you may be bringing them with you already, so skipping the nursing cover means one less thing to pack in a diaper bag or stroller.

6. Bottle Sterilizers
Good old (fragrance-free organic) dishwashing soap and water does the trick to clean dirty bottles and pacifiers. Or join the club of parents who throw it all in the dishwasher at the end of the day. Ta-da! Washed and sterilized!

7. Educational Videos
Your baby doesn’t need to be entertained by videos promising to make them smart. The best form of entertainment for your baby is you. They love staring at your face, hearing your voice (yes, even your singing) and being close to you. Wearing your baby in a wrap, chatting with them and taking them on daily errands will likely make them more than content.

photo: iStock

8. Hooded Baby Towels
Another super-cute item that is not essential. They look adorable, but your regular towels do the exact same job. Just save your softest towels for baby’s sensitive skin.

9. Baby Food Processors
The last time we checked, your regular food processor did the same thing as that fancy baby-food one out on the market. Besides, what happened to just smashing a banana with a fork? It’s also easy to make baby food with a blender. Or, give baby led weaning a try. No extra baby-specific gadgets required.

10. Gadgets That Monitor Baby’s Every Move
Monitors are great, yes. But monitors that keep track of your baby’s every poop, movement, hope and dream? That’s a little bit unnecessary when a simple sound or video monitor will keep tabs on your baby quite well. The elaborate monitoring gadgets are great for peace of mind, but they also have the potential to turn you into a nervous nelly or give you a false sense of security.

photo: glenngould via Flickr

11. Pee Pee Teepee
Yes folks, this is a real thing. It’s a cone to protect you from your little man during diaper changes. Except the little guy wiggles and giggles so much, how does the teepee even stay on? And you certainly don’t need another item to throw in the laundry at the end of the day!

12. Gimmicky Gadgets
Don’t get caught up in all the products that claim they’ll fix every little parenting problem. We promise you don’t really need a baby bath visor to steer water clear of eyes while you rinse baby’s hair (use your hand), a special sleep hat that folds down over baby’s eyes when it’s time for a nap (try blackout shades), a wipes warmer (just another thing taking up space) or a baby walking harness that helps you hold up tots learning to walk. They’ll figure out that walking thing when they’re ready.

13. Expensive and Fussy Bedding
It’s gorgeous and stunning and finishes off the nursery just so. But that bedding is also getting peed and spit up on frequently. A simple, soft fitted crib sheet will do the trick. Bedtime is safest without extra blankets, bumpers and pillows anyway.

photo: Tabitha Blue via Flickr

14. Stuffies
You can’t put stuffed animals in the crib until babies are much older (read up on safe sleep guidelines). And newborns won’t even pay any attention to them. You might as well save yourself the room in your home now because, one day, your baby will grow into a toddler and your house will be filled with stuffies.

15. Baby Spa Tub
The bubbling whirlpool action and shower stream may sound decadent, but most new parents are just trying to keep their newborn’s head above water. Save the spa ritual for mommy time.

Bonus Tip: All babies are different, with specific preferences and needs, so buy the essentials and then wait to get to know your little one before you stock up on too many swaddles, pacifiers, diapers and other items that may not suit them.

10 Genius Products to Add to Your Baby Registry

Baby Registry Breakdown: How to Find the Best Deals, Decor & Gear

7 Creative DIY Baby Shower Gifts That Wow

Exposing your kids to different experiences, cultures and art has always been a top priority. Feel the same? Then think outside the box for your next adventure. Burning Man—the annual gathering in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert happening August 27-September 4—is a great opportunity to expose your kids to nature, creativity, culture and self-expression.

Long-time Burner Mom Harley K. Dubois and Cory Mervis (Lady Merv) graciously gave us their advice and insights on life on the playa with kids. We’ve updated our list of 10 insider tips to make your Burning Man 2017 a fun-filled success with your Burner babes. And, if you need more visuals to what life is like on the Playa with kids, check out these beautiful photos of families enjoying Burning Man together.

1. The Family Experience
Bringing along the kids will lend an entirely different experience. This is the reality, but it doesn’t mean that you won’t have an amazing time! When deciding what mode of transportation to bring consider that the distances in the desert are great and can be too much for little legs to walk or pedal on their own. Get crafty and decorate your bike trailer but don’t forget to rig up plenty of shade for them to ride in style. When considering your outings, early mornings and late afternoons are best to beat the heat and the larger crowds. Nighttime noise can be an issue for light sleepers, so consider camping further back. The airport can also be a great base camp for kids. It’s quiet at night and can be a source of endless daytime entertainment for aviation loving kids.

2.  Repeat After Me: No Lost Children
Lights, sound, big art, so much to see! Adventurous ones may have a tendency to wander off so be sure to affix a wristband (the kind they can’t pull off) with your name, kids name, camp name, and location. Check out My Precious Kid for a good selection of inexpensive ID bracelets. Cell phone service is unreliable at best so if you do become separated, be sure to contact a Black Rock City Ranger immediately. Misplaced children are taken very seriously and once a child is reported misplaced all enforcement staff are put on alert until the child is located. For the older kids, identify an easy meeting spot in case you get separated. Choose somewhere central and well know so others can help your child locate it as well. Playa Info (6 o’clock and Center Camp) can be a great place to meet since they are trained to help in situations like these.

3.  So Much More Than Halloween
Just because it’s not Halloween doesn’t mean that you can’t dress up. Have a little fun and get them into the moop-free costume spirit, people will love it! Just remember that kids in costumes (whether you’re in the desert or not) are always a hit so people will want to photograph your sweetheart and give them treats – be prepared! Official media photographers can be identified by their laminates and if you are uncomfortable with anyone taking a picture of your child, be vocal.

A special thanks to Coyote and his fam for this photo (and the one at top)

4. Dust Storm Diligence
Ski or swim masks are the best and cheapest dust protection for the eyes. Consider “goggle training,” meaning get the kiddos used to the goggles by wearing them a few minutes each day. Bandannas make good air filters but the best place to be during a storm is inside. Carry the What, Where, When with you and if you find yourself stranded away from your camp during an extended one, find a kid-friendly activity (marked with the kids symbol) with a shade structure to hang out in until it passes.

photo of “Story time” courtesy of Mickey Sattler

5. Skip the Kiddie Pools
Kid pools are a mess! If you are prepared to drain and wash the pools daily you will be all set, but the first dust storm makes the mini pools brown and unappealing.  If you must, bring the kiddie pools out as treat and be mentally prepared to have it as a one time special moment.

6. Pack Familiar Toys and Bedding
Whether it’s a stuffed animal, special blanket, or sippy cup, be sure to pack a familiar object from home to make your kid more comfortable out in this unfamiliar territory. It gets cold in the high desert at night so you may want to pick up a cozy sleeping bag and let them get used to it in the weeks leading up to the event.

photo: Siberfi via Flickr

7. Combat the Dry Desert Sun and Heat
It’s the desert and with that comes plenty of sun, dust, sand, dry heat, and cracking skin galore. Little ones can be especially prone to playa foot so try and keep thin socks on their feet and be sure to clean off every night with Vinegar wash, which neutralizes the alkaline dust and restores Ph balance. (Bring a spray bottle for easy access and portability.) Pharmaceutical almond oil and Olive oil are great natural moisturizers. If your baby has super sensitive skin pack some Bag Balm for diaper rash – it’s the stuff bicycle riders use for long trips. Also a must are wide brimmed hats, sunglasses with a strap, plenty of bandanas (dust mask and cool rag), leggings, vented hat, and tons of sunscreen. Pint sized sun umbrellas can also be a fun way for little ones to keep cool and in the shade.

Other tips: Pack clear fragrance-free moisturizer and some q-tips. If your kid gets a nose bleed or the dreaded “playa-taters” (nose buggers), blow their noses in a moist fragrance-free towelette and then run the moisturizer inside the nostril before sleep.

8. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
This may be a no-brainer but be sure to keep you and your kids hydrated. Water is always good but the high altitude can also wreck havoc on the electrolyte balance of tiny systems. Consider mixing up the hydration routine with low sugar sports drinks or unflavored Pedialyte. The occasional salty snack or the favorite Burning Man staple, bacon (for the meat-eaters) can also help with salt loss. The first sign of dehydration is actually crankiness, so be aware and catch it early. Squirt guns and small hydration packs can be fun for older kids.

9. Get Connected With Others
Black Rocks Kids (Kidsville), Burning Moms, Alternative Energy Zone, and the official Kids Survival Guide – there are lots of support groups and community resources out there to educate and support families on the playa. Kidsville also has it’s own early burn which lets the little ones have their own fun if you opt to skip the main event. Consider going with another like minded family. You will have in-camp entertainment for your kids as well as options for trading off night time duty so you can still get out and have some adult fun.

10. Enjoy the Moment
Your kiddos are going to get dirty, dusty, cranky, and everything in between – there’s no way around that so give up your “perfect picture” and try to enjoy the family experience. Harley comments, “I was much more stressed about my child being out there than she was. She did great! I had bags under my eyes. Just relax and enjoy the moment. You are creating an experience for your child that will validate their imagination, inspire creativity, and give them confidence.”

Here’s some more advice for Burner parents with older/school-aged kids from Burning Man veteran Dawn:

– Instill basic safety/well-being skills religiously. Our three biggest rules: never leave camp or us without checking in with parents first, never leave camp without your camelback with water, goggles, & dust mask, and never ever enter any enclosed space without an adult we know & trust. Obviously also teach them your camp address, landmarks to get home, and what Rangers look like.

– Have a secret code for checking out their level of comfort with strange situations. We used green/yellow/red (where green is “no problem at all,” yellow is “I’m uncomfortable or uncertain, but willing to see how it pans out; keep checking in,” and red is “get me out of here”). For example, ask your kiddo “what do you think of that yellow art car?” “What yellow art car? I only see a green one.” Having a code means you can check in on them in a group without having to potentially embarrass them, but following up with them after the fact is always a good idea too.

We want to hear from you Burner parents! What are your experiences bringing your kids out on the Playa and are there any insider tips that we’ve missed?

Whether you’re building your baby registry or looking to improve your little one’s bathing ritual, these handy baby-bath essentials, from toys to towels, will make your cutie’s bath routine a soothing, no-fuss affair. Read on for the 10 products you need for a better bath time.

1. Terrific Tub
There are a zillion baby bathtubs on the market, but the Shnuggle won us over for its smart design and aesthetic (like a miniature free-standing soaking tub—adorable!). Appropriate for baby’s first bath all the way up to 12 months, the Shnuggle holds baby securely in a reclined position from birth to six months and a safe sitting position from 6 to 12 months. A foam backrest and clever “bum bump” keeps baby comfy, while a compact design makes it easy to empty, clean (no mildew-collecting crevices!) and store.

Available at amazon.com, $38.

2. Rinse Aid
Help ensure shampoo sessions are tear-free with a nifty rinser. This cute whale-themed Moby Rinser from SKIP*HOP is a keeper thanks to an easy-grip handle, a cushy lip that forms to baby’s head to keep water where you want it, and interior ridges that channel the water away from baby’s eyes and ears.

Available at buybuybaby.com, $9.99.

3. Clever Cover
Make bath time safer by slipping this Moby Bath Spout Cover from SKIP*HOP over your tub faucet. The soft rubber protects baby from bumps and bruises, and it’s resistant to mold and mildew.

Available at buybuybaby.com, $12.99.

4. Super Suds
Formulated without questionable chemicals and fragrances, this gentle two-in-one shampoo and cleanser is full of natural and nourishing ingredients, such as aloe, chamomile, coconut oil and quinoa extract. It comes in four varieties: sweet orange vanilla, dreamy lavendar, apricot kiss and fragrance-free. Bonus: Mom and Dad can use it too.

Available at honest.com, $10.

5. Soft Scrub
Keep all of baby’s skin as soft as a baby’s bottom by adding the Fridababy DermaFrida SkinSoother into your bath routine. This multi-purpose tool can be used to brush away dry skin that causes itchiness, loosen and remove cradle cap, apply baby wash, or massage in baby lotion. Think of it as the Swiss army knife of baby bathing.

Available at target.com, $10.99.

6. Moisturizing Magic
Right after the bath, keep baby’s skin soft and hydrated with the Eczema Care Skin Protectant Cream from Babyganics. Safe for even ultra-sensitive skin, this cream spreads easily and creates a moisture barrier thanks to natural seed oils and colloidal oatmeal.

Available at target.com, $10.49.

7. Toy Time
When your baby is big enough to want to have some fun in the tub, toss in a few of these Marcus & Marcus silicone bath-toy squirters for long-lasting entertainment. They’re made of 100% non-toxic food-grade silicone (because: teething babies) and are made with a smart two-piece dishwasher-safe design that allows for easy cleaning (no mold!). Plus, they’re BPA- and phthalate-free.

Available at toysrus.com, $13.99 for three toys.

8. Wash and Dry
For getting your wee one squeaky clean, you can’t go wrong with Burt’s Bees Bee Essentials 3-pack washcloths. These terry cotton cloths are perfectly sized, oh-so-soft and 100% organic. Snag the matching, highly absorbent hoodie towel—also organic—to warm up your cutie post-wash.

Washcloths available at burtsbeesbaby.com, $5.95; hoodie towel available at burtsbeesbaby.com, $12.95.

9. Temperature Check
Everybody’s favorite bathtime friend, the rubber duckie, just got an amazing upgrade. This high-tech duckie from Newoink is a floating thermometer, clock, timer and baby bath toy all in one. You’ll be able to test the water temperature and stay on your bedtime schedule while your baby bonds with duckie.

Available at amazon.com, $18.99.

10. Take a Knee
Protect knees from hard flooring with this cushy Puj Pad Bath Kneeler. Quick-drying fabric and a non-slip backing make practical sense, while the herringbone pattern adds style.

Available at buybuybaby.com, $14.99.
