Wapato Greenway, Sauvie Island One of Portland’s favorite playgrounds is Sauvie’s Island, full of berry picking and beach-going in summer and pumpkin patches in fall. Early spring might be too soon for berries, but you’ll find a great hike at Wapato Greenway, which features a wetland lake, meadows, grassland, and oak trees. Kids will love hunting for snakes (harmless garter varieties!), frogs, ducks, and more on the trails. The loop around the pond is 2.2 miles total and is great for kids.

Powell Butte Hike around a giant extinct volcano at this park in the city limits! Powell Butte is a beautiful place for a hike, with wooded paths, meadows, and perfect views of surrounding peaks on clear days. Starting at the small visitor center kiosk it’s an easy trek to the top on the paved path. There you’ll find a viewing platform pointing out the nine different mountains encircling you, including Mount Jefferson, Adams, St. Helens, and even Rainier. From there, you can follow the hiking trails around the back of the park into the forests or turn around and wind through the grassy meadows instead. The summit is a 0.7 mile hike, and the whole loop is about 2.9 miles. Spring sees wildflowers galore on the hills, and with them comes the buzz of bees and flutter of butterflies.
Hoyt Arboretum Trails Try to count how many different trees you can find in Hoyt Arboretum, we dare you! With 2300 species and over 12 miles of trails, it’s quite the challenge. Whether you can count that high or not, you’ll find plenty of easy hikes on the hills near the Oregon Zoo and Children’s Museum. There’s something for every time of year– in spring, find the 0.3 mile Magnolia Trail between Wildwood and Oak Trails for a great view of the flowering trees. There’s also cherry blossoms, dogwood flowers, and Japanese snow-bells. Don’t forget to look down for early trilliums!
Start your visit in the parking lot (it’s a pay lot, avoid the hunt and cost by taking the Max or even biking), then head to the trails. The visitor’s center is closed while Shelter in Place rules are enacted.
Take mom out for a picnic breakfast, lunch or dinner. Portland has an abundance of gorgeous green spaces perfect for celebrating mom. Try one of these.
Forest Park One of the largest urban forests in the U.S., Forest Park has over 5,200 acres for you picnic in. Mom and the little ones can stretch their legs. Head up the hill on Firelane #13. It’s a bit of a trek (~2 miles), but worth it to enjoy a beautiful vista of the Willamette River from your own private, hilltop picnic table. If you have older kids who think they are over “the picnic thing”, challenge them to eat their lunch among the ghosts in the spooky Witch’s Castle. Or, take your wicker basket up to the Pittock Mansion and go on a trek back in time. Built in 1914, it sits on a rise with an incredible view of the city. You can spread your blanket on their broad lawn anytime. Free admission, and kid friendly!
Washington Park Portland is a wealthy city when it comes to parks, so there are plenty to choose from for your al fresco dining pleasure. Parks and Rec even has a handy park finder tool on their website. But, no matter how many little boxes you check, you won’t find a park with more options than Washington Park; even when it comes to picnic spots! Tucked between Hwy 26 and West Burnside, Washington Park offers enough interesting picnic spots to keep you “eating out” all summer. If your kids want to get close to wild animals, check out the Oregon Zoo. Settle down in the shade at Hoyt Arboretum for a peaceful meal, while your kids frolic amongst the Dawn Redwoods. Or, go ahead and smell the roses at the International Rose Test Garden.
Rocky Butte Park This local treasure is considered a bit of a hidden gem and offers beautiful views of the city. Located along Interstate 205, Rocky butte can be scaled by car on a road winds its way about a mile uphill. Joseph Wood Hill Park is located at the very top. This park, is a perfect place to perch and enjoy bites while taking in the sites but getting to it is half the fun as the ride offers beautiful views and a trip through a historic tunnel that will thrill the younger set.
Once you arrive at the top, the park is made up of 2.38 acres of flat park area that is home to rock walls and beautiful historic lamp posts. The western side of the park provides views to downtown Portland, and on a clear day you can see St. Johns Bridge and the West Hills. On the Northwest side, you and your little picnickers can see Portland International Airport and enjoy the air show as the planes take off and land right in front of you. And to the East, you can see the stunning Cascade Mountain Range.
This sweet spot gives you the option of a different dining experience every time you visit. Try to visit on a clear day for best views, because there is plenty to view as far as the eye can see, while you eat.

You don't need a ticket to take in the sights and sounds of The REACH on the North Plaza. Have you ever picnicked on a roof before? This outdoor space is the largest green roof in the city, measuring over 69,000 square feet. It often plays host to a number of outdoor performances and movies, but once the crowds disperse it's the ideal gathering place for an informal meal with family and friends. After lunch, let the littles chase the birds near the two reflecting ponds.

There is shortage of Instagrammable picnic spots on the National Mall and practically every spot has easy-to-grab food options thanks to the food trucks and museum restaurants that line the green open spaces. Some of our favorite places to enjoy a spread include the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, the Tidal Basin and the Hirschhorn Museum Garden. If you need to fill up your water bottle or you just want to run off your meal with an epic game of hide and seek, check out the Summerhouse on the US Capitol Grounds.

Pint-size aviation buffs will love hanging out at Gravelly Point Park, which is conveniently situated just off of the George Washington Parkway. It's there where they're able to watch planes take off (right above their heads!) from Reagan National Airport. Pack a picnic or bring popcorn to make plane watching a serious spectator sport.

We all need a day to cool our heels and absorb some of the plentiful presidential histories that surround the District. Roosevelt Island has over 90 acres bursting with short hikes that even the tiniest tyke can tackle. There is wildlife aplenty and a guest-starring statue of Roosevelt himself for the kiddos to take in. At the end let the fountain tickle their toes before heading home.

Who is ready for some summertime water views? We've got the perfect family-friendly spot for your whole crew to enjoy. Lay out your blanket along the Georgetown Waterfront Park overlooking the Potomac River or sit on the steps. More than just a beautiful green space, the park has a labyrinth, fountain and rain gardens (collects and holds rainwater and stormwater runoff). If people and boat watching are your things, then this is the place. You can scope ducks, cyclists, joggers, kids playing in the fountain, kayakers, rowing regattas, and larger boats too.
Pack your picnic: Order food to-go from Farmers Fishers Bakers. You'll find snacks like pretzels and dip or pop kettle corn and easy-to-carry lunch options like hand-tossed pizzas, sushi and mussel pots.

It’s OK to dine and dash here. You need all the time you’ve got to take in the 218 acres. As part of the 888 acres Fairfax County Park, this lake offers fishing, boating, rowboats, a miniature train, a carousel, three playgrounds, a mini-golf course, a Frisbee golf course and an ice cream parlor in case you forget to bring dessert. Make it a big family and friends day and reserve the picnic spots with grills, which is between the lake and play areas.
Pack your picnic: Grab some unique picnic food on your way to the park at Senberry. This local spot specializes in superfoods, specifically some amazing Acai Bowls. You won't be disappointed!
Peaceful and picturesque, this southern part of the East Potomac Park offers views of the Potomac River, Washington Channel and the Anacostia. Picnic tables are aplenty as well as public bathrooms, which is perfect for the newly potty-trained set. Spend the day on the playground, watching planes fly by and close out the day with a round of mini-golf.
Pack your picnic: Stop by Grazie Grazie on your way to the park. Just under a half-mile away, you can choose the perfect picnic fare from the Build Your Own sandwich menu. Don't forget to add their famous cannoli to the order.

The National Zoo may be this park’s biggest draw, but you can munch among wildlife minus the cages too. Scan the foliage from your blanket for the three kinds of owls that live here and keep watch for the newest mammal to take up residence: coyotes. NPS rangers also take kids on free nature tours. There’s also a nature center, planetarium and the Horse Center, which offers pony rides. Park admission is free, but some activities require reservations. Eight picnic spots must be reserved for a fee, but you can also find free ones along the waterway and many have grills or fireplaces. Bonus: When nature calls, many picnic groves are near flushable toilets.
Pack your picnic:Bread Furst, just over a mile from the park, offers a delicious baked goods to go. Make sure you try the cinnamon chocolate monkey bread.
Grab a seat and open your picnic basket on one of many cozy benches. Munch by the largest cascading fountain in North America and take in the views. As part of the National Park Service, this 12-acre site also has a memorial to President James Buchanan and a weekly drum circle for dance enthusiasts. Children can bring their own handmade or commercial instruments to play along with the beats.

A favorite go-to for families of all sizes since its creation, located along the Anacostia River waterfront, Yards Park provides lots of activity. The great lawn, dog run, boardwalk, shaded overlook, and gardens are open to all. And, the Dancing Fountains are open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The fountain pours into a large canal (11 inches deep) where kids are free to wade, splash, and plunge.
Pack a picnic: Make a day of it by hitting up La Famosa. This all-day eatery brings soulful Puerto Rican cooking to the neighborhood. They even offer signature cocktails and virgin drinks to-go.

With a self-guided aerial forest, a high ropes course of 190-plus platforms in trees, 13 trails of varying difficulty, 29 zip lines, nearly 200 challenge bridges, a labyrinth, and the new Monkey Grove, which has 10 trees outfitted for climbing, it’s amazing this place has any room left for picnic tables. But it does! And that’s a good thing because you’ll need to refuel after all that climbing. Check the website for age and size restrictions for each activity, but in general, everything is open to kids 5 & up. Entry fees also vary by activity.
Pack a picnic: You'll need a filling meal after all that fun, and we found the perfect picnic carry-out. Founded in 1997, Sister’s Sandwiches and Such is a family-owned business that prides itself on quality ingredients and the unique and delicious food options that our customers have come to crave. The only thing missing is the basket.
With over 400 acres to explore the US National Arboretum is tons of outdoor fun with a little bit of history and education thrown in. Pick a spot to eat and then let your little ones play amid the old National Capitol Columns in the Ellipse Meadow. Work up an appetite while on a family hike to check out the gazebos and take in the trees from all 50 States.

Eat among storybook images come to life in the Enchanted Forest. It’s home to Mother Goose, Cinderella’s pumpkin coach, a giant atop a beanstalk and more – all renovated from a now-defunct storybook park. Between bites at the large designated, covered picnic area, take a cow train or pony ride and check out the petting farm. Hayrides, pony and cow train rides are $2 apiece.

Throw open your picnic or beach blanket, and get ready for a waterfront picnic. This small park is located on the Severn River and features picnic areas, fishing, and a beach for free cartop boat launching. There are incredible views in every direction. The epic view of the Naval Academy across the river is breathtaking. The park closes at dusk, but the fishing pier is open 24/7, so grab your rod and stick around for a beautiful sunset.
Pack a picnic: It wouldn't be Annapolis without a picnic featuring Maryland Blue Crabs. Yes, the mess is worth it. Cantler's Riverside Inn is the perfect place to order a little crabby carryout. Ask for brown paper, and you'll have easy cleanup.

The name makes it sound like a museum, but don’t let that stop you from visiting this gorgeous area. The small nature-based playground will keep little ones running and jumping for a while. The Farmstead Loop trail is easy and accessible for all ages (even a jogging stroller). Keep an eye and an ear out for the babbling brook just off the trail. Your crew will love splashing around and drying off on the bank while enjoying a picnic together.
Pack a picnic: On your way to the outskirts of Northern Virginia, stop by Fabbiolli Cellars, a locally-owned and operated winery (a great picnic spot for another day). The Knowledge Shop, a secondary education resource for disadvantage kids in LA focused on STREAM Enrichment, founded by Carlton Porter (President/Co-Founder) & Yolande Beckles (CEO/Co-Founder)—were, as one parent said, "Total lifesavers to so many families during the pandemic—helping kids with school and more when so much was remote and many parents were essential workers who couldn’t stay home."
Today they offer Saturday Science for kids, Coding Bootcamp, a vigorous after school program for kids and teens, Sunday piano lessons, summer camps and more. They also offer power empowerment classes for parents and support groups like NAAAPY (National Association of African American Parents and Youth)—an organization that addresses the needs of Black and African American families, and more importantly, those of their children.

What's Happening on Tahoe's North Shore

Tahoe East Shore Trail in Incline Village In the summer, parking at Tahoe’s most popular spots becomes practically impossible. Avoid the insanity by leaving your car at the hotel, rent bicycles and hit the trail! Tahoe’s East Shore Trail, a three-mile path between southern Incline Village and Sand Harbor State Park, is open to non-motorized bicycle and foot traffic. The path is a major step in a future multi-use trail circling Lake Tahoe to connect communities, parks, beaches, businesses and other destinations. The trail is aimed at enhancing safety and mobility by separating vehicle and foot traffic.
Approximately 90 new parking spots with direct access to the path are available at three new parking lots located alongside State Route 28 in Incline Village near Ponderosa Ranch Road.
Summer Events on Lake Tahoe As California opens back up, summer events are returning to the lake. The Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival is back with The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) at Sand Harbor, July 17 to August 22. Catch Grammy-winning Celtic harpist Ann Roos at Music in the Castle(reservations required and limited), July 24 at Vikingsholm Castle. Or check out the Brews Jazz & Funk Fest, August 14-15 at Squaw Valley, where you can sample beers from 15 different breweries while watching live music. Tickets must be purchased in advance but children under 12 are free.
Via Ferrata in Squaw Valley Tahoe's Via Ferrata in Squaw Valley is where climbers ascend the towering granite cliff and enjoy the spectacular view of the valley far below. The Via Ferrata offers a unique way to explore a part of Squaw Valley rarely visited by vacationers. A Via Ferrata, which means “Iron Road” in Italian, is a protected hiking and climbing experience.
Visitors have the option to purchase group or private tours that each last 2.5, 4 or 7 hours. Participants will take routes that include cable bridges, metal rungs to aid in climbing and more traditional rock scrambling sections. Every participant will be guided by professionally-trained mountain guides and will be secured to the rock using permanent steel anchors and cables. This activity is limited to ages 10 and up and we know the double-digit kids are going to LOVE it.

Go Tahoe North
Squaw Valley Adventure Center Back down at the base of the mountain Squaw Valley Adventure Center in the village is open for summer with some great kid-friendly entertainment. A climbing wall, ropes course, mini golf or let the little ones jump out the wiggles at the Sky Jump Bungee trampoline. Tots over 20 pounds can bounce and flip to a happy exhaustion for $12.
High Camp Fun Take a ride on the aerial tram to the top of High Camp where you will find many activities to choose from. Swing and slide at the playground, take a dip at Squaw Valley’s Swimming Lagoon & Spa or even go for a spin around the roller rink. The free-form lagoon is heated to a comfortable 102 degrees and is surrounded by expansive decks, plenty of seating and a casual umbrella bar offering drinks and snacks. The club provides lockers as well as showers and changing rooms.
Editor’s note: the swimming lagoon and hot tub are currently closed for the 2021 season due to COVID-19.
Squaw Kids Adventure Camp If you are looking for a camp experience while visiting Tahoe (and a kid-free day for yourself), check out the Squaw Kids Adventure Camp. Kids will swim, ride the tram, hike, bike, study navigation, engineer, cook, do yoga and many other fun activities. It’s offered Friday-Monday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. for kids between the ages of 5-13. The cost is $150/child, per day and includes a tram ticket and lunch! Save $20 when you book two days in advance and $200 if you book five sessions.
Paddle Out The slopes are to winter what the lake is to summer. Calm, clear waters make for an unforgettable kayaking or stand up paddle board trip, and the folks at the Tahoe Adventure Company can set you up with everything you need. There are options for hourly rentals or guided tours from their launch point on the North Shore, and their skilled staff are there to assist with any skill or age level—they've suited up toddlers for rides on both kayaks and paddle boards!
Tahoe Treetop Adventure Park Challenge yourself with an aerial adventure in the canopy at Tahoe Treetop Adventure Park. Climb, swing and zip line through Tahoe’s forest on this two-hour course. There are three locations: Squaw Valley, Tahoe Vista and Tahoe City. Kids as young as five years old can participate in the beginners courses and family members who do not want to join in can enjoy the trails below. Courses start from $40.

The Ritz-Carlton In true Ritz style, the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe resort covers all the bases and makes any stay extra special. Last summer they added on the Lake Club which offers direct access to Lake Tahoe via a private boat pier, lake activities like kayaking, dining options and an outdoor fire pit to sit and enjoy the lake views.
Their indoor campout package takes glamping to the next level: Compact tents are set up in room and stocked with a down cushion, pillows, blankets, a lantern, teddy bear and even a s'mores set. Want an expert to handle your sweet treats? In the late afternoon, a s'mores-ologist mans the outdoor fire pit, melting up gooey gourmet creations for everyone who stops by. The Ritz Kids Summer program offers daily, summer-camp like activities, from hikes to crafts to lawn games. The heated pool and adjoining outdoor barbecue restaurant, The Backyard, is where you should plant yourselves on Friday nights, when early evening family concerts go down (not to mention happy hour). With all the swimming, biking, boating and hiking you've got to fuel up! Grab a bite to eat at The Fireside Pizza Company which offers great family dining with a menu that goes beyond just pizza. This summer there's live music most weekends on the patio.
If you're looking for a lakefront kid-friendly dining experience, a quick trip into Tahoe City offers Jake's on the Lake and Sunnyside, both with decent kids' menus, plenty of people watching and stunning views to keep the little ones occupied.
For a fresh, regularly changing menu, try Spoon. Book ahead to save a spot at one of the outdoor tables under the pines and leave room for dessert! Although Spoon does not offer a children’s menu, they’re happy to bring out a starter or side instead. Just try not to get food envy if you order the Mac n’ Cheese for the kids and not yourself.
Also in Tahoe City, Rosie's Cafe is a popular family breakfast spot. If the bicycles hanging from the ceiling don't keep your kids entertained, the short stack and cinnamon french toast will (served until 2:30 pm daily).
If you're staying at (or swinging by) the Ritz Carlton, Manzanita has a gorgeous outdoor patio, a thoughtful kids menu—complete with crayons, of course—and lots of room for the kids to explore and climb within view of your table. Backyard Bar & BBQ is poolside, and most items are cooked over an open flame.

What's Happening on Tahoe's South Shore

There are loads of new on-the-water activities for this summer on Tahoe's South Shore. From the marina at Camp Richardson, take a three-hour tour that includes a boat ride and tour of the historic Vikingsholm Castle. Cost: $99/adults. $69/kids 12 and under.
See the lake like you never have before with Clearly Tahoe. Their tours in transparent kayaks offer unobstructed views into Tahoe’s deep blue depths. Choose from a day tour that ranges from 1.5- 4 hours, night tour with LED lights or eco-discovery tour in search of local wildlife. Kids age 5 and up are welcome on Clearly Tahoe's kayak tours and tours are $99/person and up depending on selection.
Tour Emerald Bay or head out on a happy hour cruise on the Tahoe Serenity. Enjoy a guided tour aboard the 63-foot luxury yacht and take in the gorgeous sights from the water. Both cruises are good for all ages. Pro-tip:With Round Hill Pines located on the Lake’s southeast shore, the happy hour cruise offers the perfect advantage to catch a Tahoe sunset.
Snorkel, Dive or Boat over Shipwrecks in Emerald Bay Underwater adventurers will be stoked to discover Emerald Bay Maritime Heritage Trail, an underwater exploration of shipwrecks scattered across the bottom of Emerald Bay. Scuba divers can descend to these pristinely preserved watercraft, each with its own unique history and explore the scuttled vessels in one of the most majestic settings in the nation. Scattered over four dive sites, the sunken vessels include a wooden barge used to haul cordwood and ferry cars across the lake and a 1915 boat owned by the proprietor of the now-defunct Emerald Bay Resort.
The shipwreck dives require Scuba experience and a tolerance for cold water, but the adventure represents a truly unique way to experience Tahoe’s beauty, history and lake environment. Snorkelers and boaters may be able to view some of the shallower shipwrecks when the conditions are favorable.
Kayak to a Teahouse Unfortunately, no tea is served now but your little explorers will love paddling out to the ruins at Fannette Island in a kayak. Rent a stand-up paddle board or kayak from Kayak Tahoe from their beach location next to the pier at Emerald Bay. Children can ride in a double kayak from the age of three with an adult, or take out their own from 15. It is a ten-minute cruise out but give yourself more time to get back, as the wind can make progress slow.
Gondola Ride From mid-June, Heavenly’s gondolas open for the summer season. Enjoy the panoramic views as you float up the mountain.. before boarding the gravity-powered mountain coaster to race back down. Ride solo or with a passenger—thrill-seeking kids can ride from as young as three. A gondola plus coaster ticket is $85 for adults, $58 for children aged up to 12 and $73 for teens between 13 and 18.
Tahoe Trout Farm Catching your own fish for the grill is a Tahoe tradition and kids can hook their own at Tahoe Trout Farm. This family-owned farm, which has two ponds stocked with rainbow trout, will supply bait and tackle at no extra cost. Families are charged per fish, depending on length and the farm will clean and pack your catch for you.

Lakeland Village Resort at Heavenly If you are looking for South Shore spot to set up camp, definitely add the Lakeland Village to your list. Their set up is particularly family-friendly as they offer townhouse units with five bedrooms that sleep up to 14. These include a full kitchen so that you don't have to schlep the kids out for every meal. Invite your BFFs and reserve a unit for the ultimate in summer fun and then head on down to the quarter-mile long private beach for some lake activities.

Local sweet lovers were soon flocking in. The café decor reflects owner Christine Andersen-Smith’s love of antiques and vintage items. The bakery also has fresh baked bagels that are boiled before baking, scones, cupcakes, muffins, cookies, quiches and more.
Glazed and Confuzed Tahoe Donut is a family-owned bakery slinging small-batch donuts, located in South Lake’s Bijou Shopping Center. Their eclectic creations like the Oh-Oh-O-REO and the Vincent Van Dough are to die for.
The South Lake Tahoe Beer Trailincludes nine different local craft breweries or taprooms all within less than six miles. The hopping locales are certainly kid-friendly, especially South Lake Brewing Company and Lake Tahoe AleWorxs.
