Good nutrition is essential for brain development during the first 1,000 days of a child’s life. However, some parents may not be aware that poor nutrition during this crucial time can have lasting effects on cognitive and social development from early childhood through adulthood.

As a pediatrician and a busy mom of two, I know firsthand that the struggle is real when it comes to making sure our kids are eating healthy and nutritious foods. When my kids were babies and toddlers, it was especially difficult to make sure they got the necessary vitamins and nutrients into their tummies, mostly because they were picky, inconsistent eaters. Of course, I am not alone in this problem.

A recent study, which examined nutrient intake and adequacy in diets of children ages one through six, found that although most had adequate intakes of essential vitamins and nutrients, there were several areas where there were significant nutritional inadequacies, specifically calcium, vitamin D, DHA and iron. In fact, it revealed that Black children are the most deficient in iron (11.7%). The study also found that most children do not consume enough potassium, fiber, or choline. This is cause for concern in babies, toddlers, and young children.

So, what can we, as parents, do to make sure our own children are getting the proper nutrients they need for brain development during the first few years of their lives?

First, instead of agonizing over the fact that your children absolutely must eat healthy foods every day, take baby steps. Focus on making sure they’re ingesting those vital nutrients every week. Make sure that when prepping meals for the week ahead, you’re being mindful of nutrients like iron, calcium, vitamin D, and DHA. It’s also important to note that a lot of these micronutrients overlap. For example, if your child is getting enough calcium and iron, it’s likely he or she is also getting a ton of other nutrients too, since most nutrient-dense foods contain more than one.

Unfortunately, not all kids will eat certain nutrient-rich foods like fatty fish or leafy greens. In this case, I say if at first you don’t succeed, try again. Just because they won’t eat it the first time you make it doesn’t mean you should stop trying. Involve your kids in the grocery shopping and let them help you pick out healthy foods. Visit the seafood section more often. Buy some frozen shrimp and fatty fish so you expose them to these different types of food. Then, let them help you prepare family meals. Kids tend to be more likely to eat foods they’ve helped prepare.

In the case of iron and calcium-packed leafy greens, you can certainly blend them into a smoothie, muffins, or sauce from time to time, but I would also recommend that parents let their children see the whole food in its natural state (in a salad for example) as well so they can taste and touch it. Even if they do not like it at first, they will eventually become more open to trying it again and maybe even accepting it since their palates evolve over time.

Other great nutrient packed foods include eggs (in all forms) and oranges, which are high in calcium and serve as a great substitute for kids who do not or cannot eat dairy. There are even some cereals that are fortified with iron.

For those families who cannot have specific foods in the house because a family member is allergic, talk to your pediatrician about what foods would be good, nutrient-rich substitutes.

The key takeaway here is patience and persistence. Exposing our children to a wide variety of colorful foods with different textures and nutrients, early and often, can work wonders for their development in the long run. And lastly, don’t be too hard on yourself, you’re doing just fine.

Today’s theme is: a time you were at your lowest and nobody knew.

This was Alex’s grade seven graduation day. We were beyond ecstatic. Alex did not enjoy elementary school for the most part. Grade seven was the exception. It was a perfect mix of a fantastic teacher, wonderful aide and a group of lovely kids who all made him feel comfortable and accepted.

The majority of the rest of his time there was hard on all of us. There were so many times when he resisted going. To the point of us having to pry his fingers off the doorframe to not be late.

We got a lot of calls, emails and daily reports about how he wasn’t able to do this or that. He wasn’t even able to just ‘be’ at school. It was disheartening and often traumatic, to say the least. This was a period of years when he had a lot of meltdowns. We were almost always on eggshells waiting for the next one to happen.

This graduation day started off great. We were so happy to be moving on while simultaneously anxious about what high school would bring. I pressed his clothes and helped him dress. I took a moment to admire my handsome boy in his new shirt and blazer that I had bought special for the occasion. He fidgeted a little but managed.

I proceeded to get myself ready and it all started to hit me. The auditorium would soon be filled with all the school staff, students and lots and lots of families. What if it’s all too much for him? What if he has an epic meltdown and we need to physically escort him out of there screaming and crying with all those eyes on us? My face got hot at the thought. All the memories from the past eight years came back. The thought of what if high school is no better?

My mind went down the rabbit hole, and before I knew it, I was breathing really shallow. I felt like I was suffocating. I started to sweat and tremble. I raced to the window and threw it open and stuck my head out for some fresh air, but it was already warm out so that didn’t help. I was having a full on panic attack. I realized it too which made me panic even more. Thankfully, I turned the cold water on and splashed my face and neck and it kind of snapped me out.

I then proceeded to bawl my eyes out and silently ask why everything has to be so hard and why can’t we just enjoy this day like everyone else? I took a few minutes to collect myself and reapply my now smeared makeup.

I didn’t tell anyone. We went to the graduation ceremony and ended up having one of the best days ever with Alex. He was happy and smiling and we got some amazing pictures. No meltdowns. Probably helped that we kept reminding him after that day that he would never have to go back and then we were getting a treat after, lol.

I remember sitting in that school auditorium, looking around at all the parents and thinking, “If you only knew what it took to get us here.”

Adulting isn’t easy, especially the school morning grind. Between packing lunches, hunting down homework and making sure shoes match every single day, it’s no wonder we’re barely keeping it together. When it’s time for a breather, Stonyfield has launched the Breakbox Collection, lunchboxes for parents that encourage a little self-care!

Three themed lunchboxes are available to buy online now, with some hilarious goodies:

  • Adult Time Out: Even adults need a time out once-in-a-while, but they’re more fun as an adult… Includes everything parents need to take a load off after (another) long day: an organic mixer, Unreal Candy, Simple Mills and Forager Chips
  • You Got This: Meant to reassure parents that they’re doing an amazing job and give permission to pat themselves on the back; includes a trophy, gold star stickers, a magnet family organizer for the fridge, a “You Got This” mug – and coffee + a hydration bottle to keep them going along the way
  • Hide in My Closet: For those days when you just want to hide out from everyone in your house and squeeze in some much-needed self-care; includes a candle, Bliss Bright Idea under-eye patches, a jade roller, an eye mask and a Swear notebook to let out all your frustrations

They’re cute, but also charitable! Stonyfield is donating 100% of the purchase price ($50 each) to No Kid Hungry. And inside each Breakbox, you’ll find a packed note with a note of wisdom from parents across the country.

If you need a little extra help to make it to school day downtime, we’ve got you. Whether it’s breakfast inspo or delegating some of the morning tasks, cutting down the craziness is totally doable!

20 Store-Bought Breakfasts That Make Mornings a Cinch

Our family just returned from our annual week at the Jersey Shore. Nothing recharges us like a day on the beach, listening to the rhythmic sound of the waves, breathing the salty air, and soaking up Vitamin D. However, it’s hard to ignore the shocking headlines about our fragile oceans that are increasingly in peril. So, what can our family do to help the oceans right now?

Here are 10 simple ways to help the ocean starting today:

1. Use Metal or Glass Water Bottles
Water is an important step to giving your body the hydration it needs, but plastic water bottles often pollute our oceans. By opting for a glass water bottle, it’ll help alleviate the pollution in our oceans, but also saves you money by not buying water. It’s also important to note that most plastic bottles are actually not reusable because they can release toxins from heat, so carrying your water in a glass bottle is healthier for your body as well!

2. Use Metal or Wood Utensils
Also, most fast-food restaurants and food trucks give plastic utensils as a means of easy and cheap clean-up, but it’s doing a lot of harm. Plastic utensils such as plastic straws often get into our oceans, causing massive health problems for our ocean animals.

Our family now brings a backpack with us on just about every outing filled with metal water bottles and a few reusable sporks that we got at a camping store.

3. Stop Using Styrofoam & Plastic Cups
Hot coffee or tea in the morning is essential for many people, but cutting out the styrofoam cups can help our oceans breathe a little better. Styrofoam is not biodegradable, making it nearly impossible to dispose of it in a safe way. Getting a thermos to fill up with coffee or tea (at home or at a store) can be a painless step that can help our oceans and ocean animals.

4. Bring a Tote Bag
On recent trips outside the country, I noticed that most stores don’t provide plastic shopping bags, and expect you to use reusable tote bags instead. Sounds like a good policy for our country, too! In the meantime, getting a sturdy tote bag can make sure we’re cutting out plastic bags when we don’t need them. Tote bags are affordable and available in an array of sizes, fun prints, and colors to choose from. Be sure to keep one in the car, and have reusable shopping bags ready for trips to the grocery store!

5. Cut Up Six-Pack Rings & Masks
The plastic that keeps together cans and other drinks may seem like a tiny harmless thing, but our marine and ocean life end up getting stuck in the way too often. If you’re really craving that product and it contains these rings, just make sure to cut them up because it makes sure our animal friends don’t get tangled up in them.

Also, be sure to cut the straps on disposable masks, as people have found a number of seagulls tangled in them

6. Avoid Buying Plastic Packaging
You’ve probably heard about “dead zones” in the ocean consisting of vast seas of plastic garbage. Buying plastic-free packaging can help us cut out ocean pollution. Choosing products that contain easy to recycle packaging such as paper can make sure we’re not consuming a lot of plastic as shoppers. It is also important to note that only 9.5% of plastic is reduced, which means around 90% of our plastic consumption ends up polluting the earth.

7. Travel the Ocean Responsibly
Make sure to research any cruise, kayak, or boating service before you go on your journey to make sure that the services aren’t harming our oceans. There are many eco-friendly options to choose from, so go on ahead and search!

8. Volunteer: Help Clean Up Beaches!
Does your family go to the beach every summer? The tides often carry debris and waste into the ocean which affects ocean water quality and ocean life. Find out if your favorite beach has any “clean-up” events for volunteers. Volunteering is a great way to strengthen your connection to the beach, and is very rewarding. Helping to clean up the pollution on the beach can also bring a huge impact on our oceans.

9. Support Organizations That Help the Ocean
By donating, helping, or spreading the news, you can help make sure that our ocean is protected. Every bit of help counts and there are tons of ways that a person can help. Do a little research on sites like CharityWatch.org and find a top-rated organization or charity that helps the ocean.

10. Learn about the Biodiversity of Our Oceans
The world’s oceans contain millions of marine species, but that number is in decline. Learning about biodiversity and what affects oceans is a powerful tool, and it’s also incredibly interesting!

Michelle Branch shared some exciting news yesterday––she’s expecting! The singer took to Instagram yesterday to share the news that she’s already got some cravings because a baby is on the way.

This will be the second child for Branch and her husband, Patrick Carney. The two share two-year-old son Rhys, along with Branch’s 16 year-old-son, Owen, from her first marriage.

While all baby news is exciting, this is particularly joyous for the couple who announced they experienced a miscarriage in Dec. 2020. New baby Carney is due in early 2022, but Branch hasn’t shared whether a baby brother or sister is joining the fam.

Your selected Dasher will then deliver both your meal and store order together, with no added delivery fees.

So how does it work? Place your restaurant order on DoorDash like usual, then look for the DoubleDash option on the map to add items from nearby stores after your order is placed. Then add your items from the store page and check out with no minimum order or delivery fee.

Since the program is new, DoubleDash currently only works with 7-Eleven, Walgreens, Wawa, QuickChek, The Ice Cream Shop and DashMart, a DoorDash-exclusive store with thousands of items from your local restaurants. In some markets, DoorDash is also piloting with local restaurants so diners can add add complementary items from nearby local restaurants to your initial meal order.
