After a year of park closures and the cancellation of annual passes, Disneyland Resort has finally shared the details of its new passholder program! The Magic Key Program has arrived and its a new take that offers plenty of variety for families.

Officially going on sale Aug. 25, Magic Key brings four pass options that resemble those under the former program. The biggest change is that the theme park reservation system will be integral to every pass going forward.

There’s much to digest in the infographic above but in a nutshell, guests will all have the option to make at least two reservations at a time and get discounts on food, beverages and merchandise. Missing from the old program is notably the Photo Pass which gave guests access to all their attraction photos.

Another big change is that while monthly payment options still exist, they will only be available to California residents. The Imagine Key monthly payments will only be available to Southern California residents.

Additionally, the programs do not guarantee the ability to park hop daily like in years past. Park guess who want to park hop will need to make sure that reservations are available at the park they want to start the day at. If they are, hop away! If there is only availability at one park, then guests will spend the entire day there. Availability is shown on the reservation calendar when guests go to make their park plans and reservations.

The new program is a welcome announcement for park enthusiasts and Southern California natives who often use the Disneyland Resort as their afternoon playground. While the changes do away with old perks, they continue to offer magic in brand new ways.

You can learn even more about the new program at the Disney Parks Blog.

Halloween may look different this year as we remain in a global pandemic, but that doesn’t mean it will be any less fun.

While our kids are at home spending a great deal of time on their Chromebooks, Halloween can be a perfect escape from screen time to give your kids so much needed time enjoying the festive fantasies of Halloween.

Some entertaining Halloween activities to consider are decorating the doors with black and orange paper and draw witches, ghost, and goblins on them.

A basement, spare bedroom, or living room are perfect places to decorate with creepy crawlers, orange, and black crepe streamers, and a witch pinata. Consider hanging up some sheets to make separate haunted entrances for kids to go around and trick-or-treat.

And, of course, it’s not Halloween without sweet treats to enjoy. Why not make a papiermâché ghostly bowl to store your candy stash? Here is a tutorial to watch to help spark some creative ideas. Include some treats that provide a bit more than just a snack and offer games and activities, later on.

Have some fun creating creepy capsules. Using a little hocus-pocus, you can turn a Halloween colored Easter egg into something Halloween-y! Simply take a permanent marker and draw something spooky on your plastic eggs such as a vampire, pumpkin, or zombie and then have everyone fill their capsule with slime, a fake spider, or gummies to play a trick-or-treat on your family. Continue the fun by playing a game of ‘Guess What’ with your spooky creations. Have each person take turns selecting an egg with their eyes closed and make a guess as to what they have in their hands.

How to Play:

Step 1. Have everyone fill their capsule with something spooky (keeping what’s inside a secret) and put them all out in a line.

Step 2. One at a time, each person will have to go through and shake the capsules and guess what’s inside.

Step 3. Write your guesses down on a piece of paper (don’t show anyone your answers), and the person with the most answers correct wins the game.

Try some scary stories or fun facts. Share a favorite fun fact or make up a spooky story. Have everyone put ideas in a pumpkin bowl and take turns sharing the fun fact or coming up with a spooky story around the word you pulled out of the pumpkin bowl.

Lastly, end the day by creating a Halloween mask. You’ll need some paper, glue, scissors, elastic, and crayons, and markers. Cut out holes for your eyes and start decorating. Play a game of hide and seek in your new masks and see what characters are hiding around your house!

While Halloween at home is new to all of us, it can certainly be an exciting adventure and a Halloween you’re likely to never forget!

That One Night

Photo: Catherine Myman Kaplan

We spend most of our children’s lives telling them not to take anything from strangers and definitely do not go to their homes. Except once a year when it becomes totally okay to do those two activities.

That time comes every October 31, greeted by delight by some and eye rolls. When that day comes around, we encourage our children to ring on the doorbells of total strangers and threaten them with a trick if they do not hand over a miniature piece of candy. In an overpriced costume they will wear once. At night. Past their bedtime.

Now I’m not some curmudgeon opposed to candy, costumes, and fun. I personally love that I can make up how many fun-sized Snickers bars add up to one regular sized one (my guess is 27) and delight in hearing the squeals of delight when I pretend that I see a real life (albeit miniature) Jedi standing at my front door. It is great to exchange hellos with the people in my neighborhood and to watch their kids grow up.

And of course, it’s wonderful to see my daughter and her friends show off their costumes and compare their hauls of candy. But there is that part of me that wonders what they must think that one night when the basic rules of stranger danger seem not to apply. Most likely they do not even give it a second thought. I know I didn’t when I was a kid.

Some people tune in for the big game while others are more interested in the commercials. Last week Doritos first teased their Super Bowl ad starring Jimmy Kimmel and Mindy Kaling. Today, they released a second teaser revealing that Flat Matthew is in fact Matthew McConaughey.

We haven’t seen what Flat Matthew actually looks like but we do hear McConaughey’s voice.

In last week’s teaser, Kimmel introduces his mysterious talk show guest to a shocked Mindy Kaling. “Did you see him backstage? He’s got a whole new look. Like a look that no one’s ever had before,” says Kimmel to Kaling referring to the mystery star.

Doritos has been a Super Bowl fixture for more than two decades, this year the brand is bringing a whole new dimension to gameday with the highly anticipated return of Doritos 3D Crunch.

Now we can only guess how McConaughey will get back to his original shape. No doubt it will involve a bag of Doritos 3D Crunch.

We don’t know about you, but we can’t wait to see how this unfolds.

Dictionary Day is the perfect excuse to dust off your Webster’s (you still have those, right?) and learn a few things. We’ve got five easy-to-medium dictionary-based games that can be easily adapted for little literati of all ages. Read on to get the word.

Fictionary

Element5 Digital via Unsplash

Choose six to ten words your kid may not know. For each word, write out four possible definitions and have them vote on which one they think is the real definition. For little ones, keep it simple with one or two-word definitions and don't forget to add in at least one very silly one! For older kids, choose more difficult words and throw in a couple of “realistic” sounding definitions.

Dictionary for Beginners

Aaron Burden via Unsplash

Put that ABC song to the test with a simple word search. Teach dictionary use with starter words, like CAT, BALL or BUG. Give them one letter at a time to help them locate the word. Example: CAT. Have them look up the C, then the A, finally the T until they find it. They'll see the alphabet within the alphabet on every page.

Pictionary: 4 Ways

marimari1101 via Pixabay

Pictionary, light. Flip through the pages of a dictionary, and have your littles place their finger on a word at random. Work together or on your own to draw the word you’ve landed on (let's hope you get castle and not existentialism.).

Pictionary, advanced. You’ll need at least four players for this one. Using a dictionary, one member of the team chooses a word at random (see flip method above). Their next task is to draw the word they picked, hoping their team member guesses it (Not unlike the board game by the same name.). Teams take turns, and each member alternates drawing. You can up the ante by adding a time limit to the drawing.

Variation: If the drawing team’s mate doesn’t guess, the opposing team gets one guess at it.

Variation 2: You'll need five people. Have one person be the random word generator. They can either write or show the word to the player whose drawing. This role is best played by mom or dad.

Fake It Up

Have the kiddos make a word up and then explain or write the definition out to you. Example: decision-ing. What a four-year-old says when he is trying to decide between two equally fun ideas (ice cream vs. cake, bath vs. shower, etc.).

Holidays have always been big in my family. Christmas growing up was always so busy. You see, my parents were divorced, and so I was always on the go; being with one parent Christmas Eve and the other on Christmas Day, while also seeing extended family as we celebrated.

I always dreamed of the day I’d have my own family, and we could sit and enjoy the holiday.

Decorating one tree.

Being in one place for the whole holiday.

Fast forward to now, and my dream Christmas may still never happen. Not because we aren’t together as a whole, but because my son is autistic.

We decorated a tree for the first few years. We wrapped presents. We even got to stay in our home, not having to travel.

But my son has yet to show interest.

Last year we didn’t even put up a tree. We didn’t wrap presents. We simply set up my son’s swing and placed the other toys on the swing for him to see. I really thought it would be the year he showed interest in his presents.

I was wrong.

I even told myself I wasn’t going to bother with a tree this year, either. But while trying to clean out the storage room, and decluttering our living room, my husband brought in the Christmas tree.

He proceeded to set up the tree and plug in the lights only to figure out some of the lights were out. We tried replacing some of them but that didn’t seem to do the trick. So we figured it’s because it’s old, and it was time to buy a new tree.

We then got ready and went to town to grab a bite, and purchase a new tree. All before we had to pick Graham up from school.

After picking Graham up, we headed home to get ready for home therapy and to set up our new tree.

Our plan went south, fast.

As we opened the front door our old tree was still up. Graham stopped; he wouldn’t enter. He finally grabbed my hand, shaking, and proceeded to stay as far away from the tree as possible ‘til we made it to his room.

Our ABA therapist arrived, and we once again tried to head into the living room to attempt playtime.

Nope. He wasn’t having it. He kept pulling us back to his room.

I told my husband to take the tree down—guess we won’t have a tree again. I kind of had a feeling, but still, I was bummed. I was trying not to cry thinking once again my son didn’t care for Christmas. It was going to be just another normal day in our house, so I thought.

A few minutes later, my son was on his break time and entered the kitchen—where my husband had placed the tree and ornaments. He grabbed a few of the ball ornaments and was stimming loudly. We thought, well, do we try putting the tree up again?

So once again my husband dragged the tree and decor into the living room. As he worked to put the tree together our son said, “Wow.”

I couldn’t believe it.

Not thirty minutes prior, he was terrified and wouldn’t enter the house because of the tree.

He just kept watching daddy as he put up the tree, jumping, arms flapping, and screaming. The real kicker is when my husband put Graham’s Lightning McQueen on the tree. Graham wouldn’t leave the tree alone after that. He keeps managing to take off with it without us realizing it. I hear myself saying “Graham, no no” before we have no ornaments on the tree at all!

In a way, I guess you could say my Grinch heart is growing because for once, we have some hope in enjoying Christmas.
