Old Town San Diego is the site of the first permanent Spanish settlement on the west coast and is considered to be the birthplace of California—and we can explore it right here in our own backyard.  Old Town San Diego State Historic Park has beautifully preserved the early days of San Diego via original and reconstructed buildings, historic museums, and by allowing visitors to have authentic experiences that demonstrate what life was like in the 1800s. Spend the day in this amazing locale on an Old Town Trolley Tour, dine on delicious food in some of the best Mexican restaurants in San Diego, and take a stroll back in time for an unforgettable family outing. Read on for details on how to plan your day.

Explore San Diego History

Mark K. via Yelp

There are so many historical sites to venture to in Old Town! Here are a few stand-outs you’ll want to add to your “must-see” list:

Old Town Model Railroad Depot— Take a trip back to San Diego in the 1950s! If your little one loves trains, and you have a love for details, then this museum is not to be missed. The custom Lionel size train layout covers over 2000 square feet and delights both kids and adults. Admission is $5-$10.

Seeley Stable—This reconstruction of a barn from the mid-1800s shows the life of a cattle rancher, featuring well-preserved coaches, buggies and wagons, Western memorabilia, and real donkeys. It’s free to visit and an excellent way to show kids how California got its start. Don’t miss the fully-functioning blacksmith shop, complete with fires and anvil action.

Whaley House—The well-known Whaley House is known for spooky spirits, but we enjoy it more for history than for hauntings. Pay $9.50-$14 for a self-guided tour and a less-creepy look at this mid-1800s courthouse. Older kids into Ghost Hunters will enjoy watching tourists chase ghostly “light orbs” with their cameras, but you may want to skip out on this if you have little ones who scare easily. Admission is free for kids five and younger.

Eat Authentic Mexican Food

Cafe Coyote via Yelp

There's no shortage of restaurants and authentic Mexican food in Old Town. Of course, where to dine depends more on your preference, but here are some of our favorite spots.

Old Town Mexican Cafe—This restaurant is best known for making fresh tortillas in the front window for everyone to see. We recommend sampling a piping hot tortilla off the grill and dipping it in the housemade guacamole. Their rolled tacos are also tasty. This restaurant has been dishing up authentic Mexican food since 1977!

Cafe Coyote—You can't beat the lively atmosphere and open-air seating at Cafe Coyote. Known for pristine service and Taco Tuesdays, Cafe Coyote is the perfect place to unwind with the kids after a fun-filled day in Old Town. The restaurant is huge, so there's rarely ever a waiting list. Don't miss their deep-fried ice cream.

If you're in the area for a date and are sans kids, enjoy some time at two restaurants/bars that are relatively new to the Old Town scene. Sip an amazing mezcal cocktail at Tahona and then order delectable Mexican food during their brunch, dinner, or happy hour. Additionally, Oculto 477 is a speakeasy, hidden, and prohibition-type bar in Old Town that's getting rave reviews if you want to stop in for a historic drink from a bygone era. The bar's entrance is hidden somewhere in Tahona. Make a reservation to sneak in here.

Visit a Schoolhouse from Yesteryear

Leah Singer

Take the kiddos to Mason Street Schoolhouse to experience a school of yesteryear. Built in 1865, this was the first public schoolhouse in San Diego. Learn about the school’s first teacher, Mary Chase Walker, who earned $65 per month. Kids love experiencing this old schoolhouse. They can sit at desks, check out books, see California artifacts on display, and even participate in a school lesson taught by a volunteer teacher. Mason Street Schoolhouse is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is free.

Wax On! Try Your Hand at Candle Making

Leah Singer

Pop into Toby's Candle and Soap Shop to experience candle-making as it was done in the "old days." Kids can choose a candle figurine (boat, train, animal shapes, etc., are available) and then dip their figure in different wax colors to make a take-home candle souvenir. Other activities include making a sand wax or kaleidoscope candle, and prices are from $5-$32.

Visit the Junípero Serra Museum

Alex Matthews

Get a taste of history by touring the Junípero Serra Museum that sits atop the hill where California began with a single missionary. The donation suggestion for admission is $5. Even if you choose not to go in, it’s worth taking a walk around the lawn to catch beautiful vistas and stunning sunsets from this iconic San Diego landmark

Shop Unique Stores

Bazaar Del Mundo via Yelp

After you've checked out the historic sites, get ready for some shopping at one of the many stores in Old Town.

Old Town Market— An open-air market filled with over 40 vendors that offer keepsakes and souvenirs, clothing, purses, and just about any trinket you can imagine. Live music and performances add to the festive atmosphere.

Bazaar Del MundoLocally owned and operated, this shop is at the entrance to Old Town and features specialty art and gifts from around the world. Don't miss the beautiful handmade paper flowers that will last a whole lot longer than your traditional floral bouquet.

Cousin's Candy Shop—Need a sweet treat for the trip? This fun shop has every type of candy imaginable, including vintage classics. They're famous for their handmade pulled saltwater taffy, so be sure to grab a few pieces before you leave.

Mark Your Calendar to Attend Festive Old Town Events

Alex Matthews

Keep your eyes (and ears!) open for the live mariachi performers who can be seen every weekend in Old Town. Click here for information on the entertainment schedule for the Fiesta de Reyes stage in Old Town State Park. Additionally, Old Town comes even more alive during special cultural events and celebrations, including Cinco de Mayo and Dia de Los Muertos.

In May, don't miss Fiesta Old Town Cinco de Mayo, where you'll dance live music, see Lucha libre wrestling, and ooh and aah over a grand display of lowriders.

During summer, visit Old Town during Stagecoach Days, which focus on a different aspect of early San Diego history with kids' activities, historic craft & trade demonstrations, cannon and anvil firings, living history activities, and more.

Other can't miss events include Historic Old Town 4th of July, Dia de Los Muertos, and Old Town Las Posadas.

Linked by the 1.5 mile Black Heritage Trail, you’ll find about two dozen sites on the north face of Beacon Hill that encompass the most pre-Civil War Black-owned historic buildings (think: homes, businesses, schools and churches) in the U.S. Families can take a self-guided tour of the area any time of year or wait for ranger-led group tours to return this spring. Remember to pull out the scavenger hunt and work to earn a junior ranger badge when you walk it with the kids.

Good to know: One of the most recognizable monuments here is the 54th Regiment & Robert Gould Shaw Memorial on the northeast corner of Boston Common that honors one of the first African American regiments of the Civil War.

Because our kids always need room to roam and swings to swing on, a couple of city playgrounds have made our list. Add a history lesson to your next park playdate when you visit Malcolm X Park, named after the prominent human rights leader and activist. Or bring your tots to climb and slide on the equipment at James H Roberts Memorial Playground. Roberts was a community leader and WWII veteran who spent nearly 30 years at the State Treasury Department.

Anthony’s Nose

Rob W. via Yelp

If you’d rather spend more time hiking than driving, you can look closer to home: Anthony’s Nose is a short hike up a section of the Appalachian Trail that ends with a view of the Bear Mountain Bridge and a scenic overview of the Hudson River. Be prepared for a bit of legwork, because Anthony has a pretty steep nose. The walk is relatively short distance of about three miles round trip, but it’s a mix of climbs and straight paths. The climbs are more like a staircase thanks to the rocky layout of the inclines, but they can be tough on beginners. If you still have time — and energy! — when you finish the hike, you and the kids can take a walk across the Bear Mountain Bridge, visit the small but free zoo, or ride a carousel. All make a perfect reward for your trek up the trail!

Arden Point and Glenclyffe

Josh B. via Yelp

Bring a bit of history into your hike by visiting Arden Point and Glenclyffe. In this relatively easy hike, you and the kids can retrace the footsteps of Revolutionary War general Benedict Arnold as he made his escape in 1780. It's an excellent way to bring history to life for older kids who might be studying this period in American history. The trail also offers some views of the river, but if you've had enough of that there's plenty more to see, like the 1950s railroad track that is still in use today for freight, and a few historic buildings that date back to the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Palisades Interstate Park

Noah K. via Yelp

Located under an hour's drive from the city, the NJ Palisades Park offers gorgeous views and scenic routes, as well as about 30 miles of trails of varying difficulty. This means there's a trail for any level of hiker, including small children. We recommend the State Line Lookout trails for their variety in terrain and difficulty. Taking the trails from the Lookout means getting views of the Hudson River and finding some hidden treasures like a tree swing that makes for awesome photo-ops, and the Women's Federation Monument. Before you go, ensure that everyone is wearing hiking shoes (not sneakers or running shoes) -- the terrain can get rocky.

Muttontown Preserve

hiking with kids near nyc
Tim C. via Yelp

The Muttontown Preserve trail is one of the easiest on our list, with winding but relatively flat trails through 550 acres of fields, woods, and ponds. The trails here are less like hikes and more like nature walks, allowing everyone to take in their surroundings without getting overtired—perfect for little feet and beginners. The trails also take you through a number of estates, as well as the curious remains of the mansion of King Zod, the last Albanian monarch. It is now in ruins, and covered in some colorful graffiti, making for an interesting sight among the trees. The trail markers can leave something to be desired here however, so come equipped with a map, a compass, and/or a GPS or you may end up spending a bit more time here than you meant to!

Sometimes we forget there is nature in our own backyard. If walking through Prospect and Central Park is not exciting enough, take a day trip to Staten Island's Greenbelt Conservancy parks. This foundation oversees 2800 acres of public park—including 30 miles of hiking and walking trails—and consists of High Rock, WIllowbrook, and LaTourette Parks.

All three are hidden pockets of nature and offer hours of leisurely hiking trails through wooded areas, marshes, ponds and other gorgeous landscapes. Both destinations are a perfect starter for the kids due to their location and the ease of the trails. They can wet their little hiking boots here, then move on to the more challenging or lengthier trips.

Schunemunk Mountain is another fantastic spot to take the kids. The prehistoric beach offers over 25 miles of hiking trails and varied terrain, but it's not suitable for beginners so prepare accordingly. The mountain boasts some spectacular features, like a 3,000 foot pink rock and wild blueberries ripe for picking in late spring and early summer. Some of the (literally) biggest attractions along the mountain trails are the giant megalith boulders at the top of the mountain, but be prepared to do some sweating on your way up — the diverse terrain is beautiful but it can get tough.

Ride Time: NYC’s Best Bike Rides for Families

We’re big-time now, Chicago! As of September, we officially have our first designated National Park site, Pullman National Monument. The monument honors not only early Chicago industrialist George Pullman (1831-1899) and his railway car-manufacturing empire, but also the many Pullman employees who helped usher in new rights for workers. Designated by former President Barack Obama in 2015, the site is a must-visit for families from Chicago and beyond. Here’s everything you need to know to plan a visit to Pullman National Monument with kids.

A brief history of Pullman.

National Parks Service

Formerly a planned, industrial town, Pullman remains a vibrant, living community, not your everyday museum but a Chicago neighborhood packed with history. George Pullman's factory churned out the world's first popular sleeper trains, luxurious 'palace cars' complete with crystal chandeliers, wide, comfortable beds, and gourmet meals served by former slaves turned porters, the storied Pullman Porters.

Railway history is a big part of the Pullman experience, so If you have a choo-choo train fanatic in the fam, you'll enjoy the experience that stretches from 103rd St. to 115th St. and from the Norfolk Southern rail line east to Cottage Grove Avenue

Plan your visit to coincide with a ranger-guided tour.

Perhaps the best way to experience historic Pullman is on a National Park Ranger-guided tour. Walking guided tours are offered on the first Sunday of the month, May-October, and begin at the Historic Pullman Foundation Visitor Center at 1:30 p.m. and last about 90 minutes. Check the site's event calendar before you go, too, to plan your visit to coincide with upcoming special tours and events.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CTaW_uVl3Bt/?hidecaption=true

Start your visit at the Historic Pullman Foundation Visitor Center.

Start your visit at the NPS Visitor Center housed in the Administration Clocktower Building (610 111th St.). Built in 1880, the Administration Clock Tower Building faces the Illinois Central tracks, making it one of the first buildings a visitor would see upon stepping off a Pullman railway car. Rotating exhibits showcase items from Pullman's past: Kids can step inside a model of a Pullman "Palace Car" and see how Pullman's factory workers assembled the fancy railway cars. You can also pick up a handy Self-Guided Walking Tour brochure, which will guide you to the most representative buildings in the northern, central, and southern parts of the massive monument.

Pullman was originally designed so that everything a company worker needed was within walking distance, making it easy to explore everything the monument has to offer on foot.

Participate in the Junior Ranger Program.

Pick up a free, fun activity book at the NPS Visitor Center, so your kids can work toward becoming official Junior National Parks Rangers while visiting Pullman.

The Junior Ranger Program consists of activities prepared especially for kids ages 5-12 visiting National Park Service-managed parks, monuments, and historical sites. Children participate in the program by completing prepared activity books that help them discover the importance of a National Park Service park, monument, or historic site on their own terms. After completing the specified amount of pages for your kid's age group, they'll be awarded a patch, badge, and/or certificate unique to each park. Many kids collect the badges — check out these fun ideas for displaying Junior Ranger badge collections

Pullman's Junior Ranger activity book features rail car mazes, a train car word match, an easy-to-read timeline of events at Pullman, and a bingo-style checklist of interesting places located across the park, encouraging exploration.

Bring your activity book back to the Visitor Center upon completion, and your little ranger will receive a Pullman badge and ranger-signed certificate.

Step inside the site's historic buildings.

Amy Bizzarri

Historic Pullman Foundation Exhibit Hall — Stop in to see the rotating exhibits and watch the 17-minute long video showcasing the history of Pullman.

Hotel Florence — Hotel Florence, named after George Pullman's daughter, was one of the fanciest hotels in Chicago when it opened in 1881. The 50-room hotel cost a whopping $100,000 to build and once accommodated railroad CEOs who visited Pullman on business.

Executive Row  Pullman neighborhood is known for its elegant row homes, which once housed company employees. Take a stroll on 111th St. between St. Lawrence and Langley to view the company executives' homes.

Pullman and Arcade Parks — Kids will enjoy running around Pullman Park and Arcade Park, two green spaces built by head honcho George Pullman.

Pullman Factory Complex — The massive Pullman factory complex strived to offer better working conditions and was well lit and ventilated, unlike most factories of the era. It churned out the beautiful 'hotels on wheels' that made Pullman so famous during the golden age of rail travel.

Visit the National A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum.

The success of the Pullman Rail Car Company owes a lot to the highly trained, primarily African American porters who attended to guests on their long rail journeys. The National A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum, located near the monument, in the Pullman neighborhood, showcases the history of the Pullman porters, who banded together to form the first African American labor union in the U.S. to win a collective bargaining agreement. The Pullman porters would eventually help to fuel the Great Migration and launch the civil rights movement.

Dine at One Eleven Food Hall.

Food halls are the ideal dining option for families: Everyone can find something they like with multiple options in one space. Pullman's One Eleven Food Hall offers three unique stops — Majani (vegan soul food), AndySunflower Cafe (lattes and pastries), and Lexington Betty (mouthwatering BBQ). A local entrepreneur owns each restaurant, so you can count on delicious, locally made food under one roof.

Hallow ‘Hoods: The Coolest Spots in the U.S. for Trick-or-Treating

If the thought of an extended road trip has you feeling “meh,” why not take a fun-size vacation and still sleep in your own bed? We’ve found 11 day trip destinations from Seattle that will give your family more than enough to do, so you can stay for the day or a whole weekend. If you’re ready for one last hurrah over Labor Day weekend, gas up the car and read on!

Editor’s note: As things continue to change because of COVID-19, we recommend that you double check your destination to be sure that different attractions are open during this time.

Winthrop: A Western History Lesson

Winthrop
Seth A. via Yelp

How Far from Seattle: 189 miles (about 4 hours)

Winthrop is a western-themed town that might be too far for the usual day trip, but if you start out early enough it’s worth it. A walk through downtown will make you feel like you are stepping back in time.

What to Do: You could start stretching your legs with a fairly short hike (on a paved trail) to the Falls Creek Waterfall which is about a quarter mile from the trail head. Or bring your bikes and travel down Susie Stephens Trail with the goal of crossing the Spring Creek Bridge which extends over the Methow River. For a little education lesson, make your way to the Methow Valley Interpretive Center (offering displays related to the original Native American inhabitants of the Methow Valley), the Shafer Museum (giving a glimpse of what life was like in town many years ago) or visit the Winthrop National Fish Hatchery.

When walking in town, be on the lookout for Glassworks of Winthrop where the owner, Garth blows glass and offers a little humor too. The Winthrop Rink offers roller skating during the summer and ice skating during the winter. For mealtime, East 20 Pizza is a favorite with families (where the dough and sauces are made in-house), The Duck Brand is the oldest saloon (and restaurant) in the Pacific Northwest, and don’t even think of leaving town without a stop at Sheri’s Sweet Shoppe to get one of their famous cinnamon rolls, a scoop of ice cream or nostalgic candy for the ride home.

Day Trip Tip: If you’re in town during Memorial Day or Labor Day weekends, be sure to visit the Methow Valley Rodeo which features several events for the kids including a stick horse race!

Ellensburg: Everybody Wants to Be a Cowboy

William B. via Yelp

How far from Seattle: 107 miles (approximately a 2 hour drive)

The Ellensburg Rodeo has been a Labor Day tradition since 1923 and is known for being one of the Top 10 professional rodeos in the U.S.! This is what you'd call a big deal, with something for everyone.

What to Do: At the daily three-hour rodeo shows, each of the seven PRCA sanctioned rodeo events will be seen: bareback riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, team roping, women’s barrel racing and bull riding. If you go on Saturday, you can start off by watching the Western Parade. Your tickets includes same-day admissions to the Kittitas County Fair and the Yakama Nation Indian Village offers free admission too. While at the fair, check out the Frontier Village where you have a chance to watch a blacksmith at work, learn to operate a crosscut saw, buy a soda, a pickle and some nickel candy. The area consists of historic buildings, including a schoolhouse.  Dressed in their finest regalia, the Yakama Nation Village tribe opens each night of the rodeo with a traditional dance in the center of the arena. Spectators are often invited to join in the dance. Inside the village itself, you'll find about 25 to 30 teepees with more than 75 people participating to make your experience one to remember.

Deception Pass/Oak Harbor Music Festival

Enrique K. via Yelp

How far from Seattle: 80 miles (approximately a 1.5-2 hour drive)

There is so much to do and explore at Deception Pass with its sweeping views of Puget Sound, mountains, evergreen trees, sandy beaches, sand dunes, rocky hills, peaceful lakes and so much more. Of course, your kids won’t appreciate it all until they have to go back home. Or if getting back to nature isn't your thing, check out the Oak Harbor Music Festival (just 8.8 miles further).

What to Do: Plan to park near the Deception Pass Bridge and walk across for a spectacular view. You will need a Discover Pass to enter the 4,134-acre park. The park has the distinction of being placed between the fresh water Cranberry Lake (which has its own swimming area with a large dock to swim out to) and the salty Puget Sound. There are many hiking, biking and even horse trails that wind through the park, but for families with small children who would rather just stroll, take advantage of the paved nature trail which starts out in a heavy wooded section and then suddenly opens up to a view of the Sound and large sand dunes (which is also a great place for kids to play in).

The sandy beach is also a great place to practice your balancing skills on the logs or look for sea shells. And the park is a great place for clamming, crabbing and fishing and boasts plenty of picnic spots and easy restroom access. Be sure to pack swimsuits and towels even if you don’t plan to get wet because it’s hard to resist not jumping over the waves. Plan time to visit the Civilian Conservation Corps Interpretive Center in the Bowman Bay area of the park. Originally built in the 1930s, the building is now home to a museum cared for by the Washington State Parks staff. (Note: the center has been closed due to COVID-19, so double check that before you go.)

The Oak Harbor Music Festival (September 3-5) offers three days of free concerts plus a variety of arts and crafts booths and food vendors in Downtown Oak Harbor. Two stages performing music starting at 6 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Day Trip Tips: Want to save some money on parking? Plan to explore the park for free on a Discover Pass Free Day. Upcoming dates are: Aug. 25, Sept. 28 and Nov. 11 & 26, 2021.

Crystal Mountain Resort: Experience the Mountain Without the Snow

Allison Sutcliffe

How far from Seattle: 82 miles (approximately a 1.75-2.25 hour drive)

We often forget that mountain passes can still be as fun to visit during the summer as they are during the winter, and Crystal Mountain Resort is one of the best.

What to Do: Start off by riding the Mt. Rainier Gondola that will transport your family to the 6,872 summit of Crystal Mountain in about ten minutes. Do we really need to mention that you’ll see sweeping views of Mt. Rainier and the Cascade Range? This experience can make your ho-hum picnic lunch into something spectacular or you can plan to have lunch at the Summit House Restaurant. While at the top, plan on taking part in one of the fairly easily interpretive hikes led by a forest ranger.

Day Trip Tips: The Mount Rainier Gondola is open June 21-Sep. 1. View the hours here. Since the weather can change dramatically with the elevation, plan to dress in plenty of layers and wear comfortable shoes.

Snoqualmie Falls: Where "Twin Peaks" Comes Alive

Emily B. via Yelp

How far from Seattle: 30 miles (approximately a 30-45 minute drive without traffic)

Here’s an excursion that parents and grandparents who are fans of the old TV show and reboot will go crazy over, while pretending to be looking at the waterfall. Located just a short drive from the little town of Snoqualmie, Snoqualmie Falls is one of Washington state’s most popular scenic attractions. And there's a good reason why. The 270-foot waterfall is impressive! The Falls also boast a two-acre park, gift shop, observation deck and gorgeous Salish Lodge & Spa.

What to Do: At the visitor’s site for Snoqualmie Falls, there's a short sidewalk trail that will give you a good view of the majestic falls and will impress even the toughest pint-sized critics. The site is right next to the Salish Lodge & Spa where the former (and new remake) of Twin Peaks was filmed. Psst! Go inside the Lodge’s gift shop to find some Twin Peaks swag. Then, take a trip into the city of Snoqualmie to check out the Northwest Railway Museum. While you're there, consider taking a 75-minute excursion on the historic train for another view of the Falls and the Upper Snoqualmie Valley. The historic train ride is old, rickety and kids love it! On your way home, stop by Twede’s Café in North Bend (also known as The Double R Diner) for a slice of Twin Peaks cherry pie alongside a “damn fine cup o’ coffee!”

Day Trip Tips: The Northwest Railway Museum is located at 38625 S.E. King St. with trains departing daily. Special schedules and fares are usually offered on Father's Day Weekend, Day Out With Thomas, North Bend Festival, Snoqualmie Railroad Days, Labor Day Weekend, Grandparents' Day, Halloween and Christmas.

Leavenworth: A Bavarian Adventure

Leavenworth Chamber of Commerce

How far from Seattle: 135 miles (approximately a 2.5-3 hour drive)

Surrounded by beautiful mountains, Leavenworth is a small Bavarian-styled town that doesn’t skimp on the theming. Most of the architecture here is meant to look as if the buildings were plucked from Bavaria and then placed in Eastern Washington. And it's hugely popular any time of the year. Summertime is great with its hot dry weather, of course, but so is the fall with its changing leaves and Oktoberfest celebration; spring brings new budding flowers and wildflowers galore and during the winter, this place is decked out with thousands of Christmas lights. Since Leavenworth always seems to have something to celebrate, it makes for a great place to visit year-round.

What to Do: Leavenworth is very family-friendly. Bavarian music plays throughout the town (often live!) and many of the local shopkeepers dress in traditional “Bavarian wear.” Traditional food can also be found around every corner...not to mention the many ice cream and candy shops that line the streets. Psst! During the summer months, you can find art shows on the weekends at the Front Street Park. The town is also designed to be walkable, but if the tots get tired, you can always board the trolley that comes by every so often. And if all this isn’t enough to impress your petite posse, Leavenworth also boasts a handful of parks, swimming pool, miniature golf, arcade, movie theater and even a pump track to enjoy.

Day Trip Tips: Baren Haus serves up some of the best burgers in town with homemade hamburger buns; Gustav’s is a family style pub that's been a Leavenworth favorite since 1982; and the Leavenworth Sausage Garten is the place to go for house made sausages and more sauces than you can shake a stick at. And don't miss the Wood Shop, Hat Shop and Wurlygigz along with the always-popular (and recently updated) Nutcracker Museum and Leavenworth Reindeer Farm while in town.

Mount Rainier National Park: Not Just for Hardcore Hikers

Angela Barton

How far from Seattle: 65 miles (approximately a 1.75-2.25 hour drive)

Despite what you might have heard, Mount Rainier National Park isn’t just for hardcore hikers itching to reach the summit. It's a discovery paradise with six major rivers, subalpine wildflower meadows, ancient forests, abundant wildlife and kid-friendly hiking trails galore.

What to Do: The park offers a number of different trails and kid-friendly tours to give every family a chance to see Mother Nature at its finest without wearing them all out–unless of course, that is your goal. If you’ve never been, you might be surprised to learn that some trails are fairly short (1.5 miles long), paved and are often led by forest rangers. For families who want a little extra oomph with their visit, consider taking in a geocaching treasure hunt. But whatever you do, don’t leave the mountain without making a stop at the Sunrise Visitor Center set on the highest point of the mountain that can be reached by car. This awesome visitor center is full of interesting facts and interactive displays about mountains, glaciers, animals, wildflowers and more.

Day Trip Tips: Weather conditions can change quickly, so plan to dress in plenty of layers and wear comfortable shoes. Also, be sure to grab a snack and a souvenir from the gift shop located at Paradise Inn. And add a Mt. Rainier Park pass to your list of must-haves on this trip. You can get one online or grab it from the ranger station on the way into the park. Entrance fees are waived on August 25, September 25 and November 11 of 2021.

Poulsbo: The Amazing Race

Poulsbo Chamber of Commerce

How far from Seattle: 21.5 miles (approximately 1.5-2 hour drive including ferry ride)

With a little planning ahead of time, you can take your family on their own Amazing Race to Poulsbo. It's a mini adventure just waiting to be taken!

What to Do: First, board the Bainbridge Ferry in Seattle and be sure to take the kids to one of the ferry's decks to feel the wind blow through their hair and get a good look at their surroundings. Once on the other side, the cute little town of Poulsbo is just 11 miles down the road.

Poulsbo has a proud Norwegian heritage, though the town isn’t as themed out as Leavenworth. Still, there is a little bit of everything for everyone here. There are lots of shops to visit in downtown Poulsbo, outdoor activities like kayaking around Liberty Bay and a Sea Discovery Center to explore as well as taste-testing real Lutefisk and ice cream shops and eateries for stopping at on the way back to the car. Psst! Time your visit during one of the town's many festivals for even more family fun.

Day Trip Tips: Visit the Washington State Department of Transportation ferries website to start planning this day trip. And while in Poulsbo, be sure to explore the many parks the city has to offer (15 city parks, totaling 137 acres!) as well as plan a stop at Sluys Poulsbo Bakery for a sweet treat or afternoon pick-me-up. The quaint, family-run bakery offers breads, donuts, cookies and pastries along with coffee, a perfect accompaniment for the trek home.

Wallace Falls State Park: A Wonderful Waterfall

Erica P. Via Yelp

How far from Seattle: 47 miles (approximately a 1.5 hour drive)

Those who have visited Wallace Falls often go back again and again. The hikes are fun and the waterfall is majestic. And the popular, well maintained path along the Wallace River has all the bells and whistles for a fantastic family outing.

What to Do: Of course, the main attraction here is the 265-foot tall waterfall where the view just gets better the higher you go on the trails. However, the downside is that the higher you go, the harder the hike is, so this is an experience for families with older children and physically fit parents. One trail is shorter, but also steeper while the old logging trail is fairly easy, but longer. Psst! Groups of hikers often go up one trail and come down the other to get the full experience. After you and your crew are good and tired and back at your car, drive a little further to Gold Bar and stop at Zeke’s Drive In for an iconic Zeke’s Burger and a milkshake. It's definitely the cherry on top of this family outing. Zeke's is located at 43918 State Route 2 in Gold Bar.

Day Trip Tips: A Discover Pass is required for parking, so plan to purchase one before you head out. If you're lucky, you’ll find a ton of wild blackberries ready to be snatched up on your trek. And while at the Falls, be sure to stay on the marked trails as the hills can get pretty slippery.

Seattle Center: How to Have Fun for Little or No Money

Kim I. via Yelp

How far from Seattle: You’re already there!

Okay, so what if you want to get away for the day, but you don’t want to drive far and you don’t have a lot of cash to spend? Believe it or not, there is a lot to see and do for free (or virtually free) right in our own backyard at the Seattle Center.

What to Do: First of all, plan your outing during one of the Center’s celebrations which are held every month. You and your kids can learn a thing or two about different cultures and enjoy authentic music, dance, art and more – all for free! Then, travel around the grounds and really see all of the wonderful artwork, sculptures, water fountains and plants that you are usually too busy to see when rushing to a show or museum exhibit. Be sure to make a stop at the Artist at Play playground near MoPOP, it's a must-do and will keep the kids busy for a long (long!) time. After they’ve worked up a sweat, bring them over to the International Fountain to cool off while you sit back and enjoy the music and laugh at the crazy people getting soaked down below. Psst! Don't forget to stop by the Armory for lunch or an afternoon treat and be sure to bring your camera for the endless photo opps. If you're feeling flush, take your crew to the top of the Space Needle to take in the Emerald City from the new revolving glass observation deck that's 520 feet above or take the Monorail to downtown Seattle for more adventures.

Day Trip Tips: Street parking is usually cheaper than the parking garages. Want to turn this into a bigger adventure? Consider taking the bus. Or better yet, go on a Sunday when street parking is free. And even if you don’t plan on buying anything, be sure to visit the gift shops at MoPOP and the Space Needle. They often have lots of fun Seattle-centric trinkets to look at and you just might find that one thing you didn’t know you needed!

Happy Glamping! 14 Places to Go Yurt Camping in Washington

You’ve walked by that newspaper stand hundreds of times, but did you know there’s a treasure box tucked under it? Millions of hidden “caches” (containers) worldwide are hiding, waiting for discovery. This worldwide outdoor treasure hunt is called Geocaching, and it’s an exciting—and totally addicting—family adventure. We’ve got a how-to guide that’ll tell you everything you need to know, so keep reading and get ready for fun!

What’s Geocaching?
Originally called “The GPS Stash Hunt” in 2000, founder Dave Ulmer was the first person to start a treasure hunt using GPS coordinates. His idea: “take some stuff, leave some stuff.” Two people on the internet found his container, and the geocaching game was born. Now, over 2 million caches are hidden around the world and over 6 million people are on the hunt to find them.

Girl-and-Mom-Geocaching

Geocaching is for everyone, everywhere
Geocaching is a whole family adventure that can be done anywhere from near your home to around the world you travel. Kids as young as toddlers can help find caches, but it’s absolutely perfect for kids 5+ who’ll also get educational value out of the finds, locations, and creating a log of where they have been.

How to get started:
1.  Download the free app from geocaching.com to get the GPS, log, and hints on cache locations. With the app open, you’ll quickly see the nearest caches to you. Follow the arrow until it gets within twenty feet, then put it away and start looking around. Upgrade the app (currently $9.99 for three months or $29.99 for a year) to unlock premium-only caches, advanced mapping, custom searches and more.

2.  When you’ve found your cache (yipee!), write your geocacher name—this is a cool handle you’ll use for every find you make — and the date on the log in the container. You can keep anything you like from the stash, as long as you replace it with something of equal or greater value. Log the find on your app (include a picture or any notes you’d like to put in for future finders), and put the box back where you found it.

3.   Once you get the feel of standard geocaching, try some of the more advanced treasure hunts. Multi-Caches tend to have higher quality treasures, and you have to go through a number of stops for clues to find them. Puzzle Caches also lead you through multiple stops, but you have to solve a puzzle to figure out where to go next.

Want to hide your own caches? You totally can! Just follow the rules of setting one up.

geocaching-app-container-rock

Define “treasure”—what’s inside?
“Treasure” is a subjective word, isn’t it? Especially to toddlers who collect things like dirty shoe strings and empty snail shells. Caches are categorized by size—you could be looking for anything from a large shoebox to a small fake rock with a secret compartment. Inside you’ll find things like coupons, stickers, crayons, lotto tickets, and shell necklaces—the mystery is part of the fun! But the real “treasure”, according to long-time geocacher Larry Hazeltine of Colorado Springs (who has found over 3,700 treasures with his four kids!), isn’t the prize itself. “It’s all the cool places you’ll see while hunting—parks, historic buildings, amazing views—the geocaches are just what bring you there.”

geocaching-girl-bridge-mom

Tips and tricks before you go:
• For your first few times out, search for “regular” size caches, as they’re easier to spot than smaller ones (you can see the size in the cache description).

• Bring a pen or pencil! Some caches don’t have anything to write your name on the log with.

• The best cache trades are unique and personalized to you or the place it’s hidden.

• If you’re stuck on a cache, email the cache owner for guidance or help.
