As the cold and rainy season moves in, figuring out how to survive a COVID/quarantine winter has been top of mind for me. Summer made living in a quarantine relatively easy because we could do so much outside. But now, the warm days are gone, replaced with clouds and cold temps. Normally, the Oregon winter drives me indoors, save a few dog walks, but this year I am vowing to do things differently.
COVID has changed how I view so much, and one thing is my perspective on the outdoors. For too long I have taken living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest for granted. However, right now, the outdoors is the #1 option our family has for doing anything fun outside the house. And this mom is determined to find a way to make it work.
There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing, right? I think that’s how the expression goes. We just need the right layers.
This is what my family is wearing to stay warm in the outdoors this fall and winter.
Last weekend we headed to a local arboretum to see the fall colors and brave the brisk temps. Side note: face masks make great face warmers! We wore ours too but took them off for photos.
It’s truly amazing what being outdoors does for everyone’s spirits. Something about being under the open sky makes the kids feel freer and I feel more at ease.
We are currently brainstorming a list of local hikes to hit this fall and winter. I’d like to get to the coast and show the kids Ft. Stevens, I think they’d enjoy the history. I also came across this very comprehensive list of Oregon hikes, and can’t wait to tackle some of them!
One silver lining of this Covid era: we might just become more outdoorsy people, and I am excited about that.

Patagonia Cord Fjord Coat
A unicorn jacket because it's both warm (600 fill power!) and stylish (hello corduroy!)
$299
I often tend to shy away from the outdoors when it gets cold because most technical jackets just don't jive with my style. This Cord Fjord Coat is great because it's way more interesting than your typical puffer. It has a slight vintage vibe, but the fit is more relaxed, which makes it feel modern. The flannel and corduroy fabric feel so much more cozy than your typical nylon-y fabric.
The little pack is sleek and small, perfect for wearing around your waist, *under* your coat, or slung crossbody *over* your coat. Either way, it's a lot easier than carrying a traditional purse!
These boots are my go-to for the outdoors right now because they are warm, comfortable, and can stand up to wet weather. I really love that they look like normal, everyday boots and not 'technical' or rain boots.
We are very much urban types, who are striving to be outdoors more, and this jacket is the best of both worlds. It's sturdy, industrious and warm, yet it has a sleek, polished look to it with flap pockets and snap closures.
My 11-year-old loves this jacket because the slim fit makes her feel grown up, and the long length keeps her warm. Bonus: there are thumb holes in the sleeves that she uses approximately 100% of the time.
This one is a bit like a blanket with a zipper. It's so snuggly I catch my daughter wearing it almost every day. It's a great base layer, and would work well under a parka on colder days.
My little boy hates wearing coats and instead lives in hoodies. This jacket is a bit of a hero for us because it looks like a hoodie, but with the canvas outside and quilted inside, it's a sneaky winter coat!
My kids love to show their personalities with what they wear, including their favorite colors. I love these beanies because they are bright and colorful, but not over the top. Heck, they're even cool. My kids like them because they're soft.
I'm Brianne Manz, once a fashion showroom owner turned mom and blogger/writer. I live in Battery Park with my husband, our three children & our puppy Cooper.
As much as I love summer & summer dresses, fall is my favorite season in New York City. There’s nothing quite like the changing colors in Central Park. But fall in the north east can be a tricky time for fashion! We continue to have bright sunny days but overall cooler temps. I find myself constantly asking, should I bring a layer or not? I love a cozy knit but sometimes I get too hot. And I love a dress but they aren’t always warm enough. I also start to pull out all my jeans around this time of year after having put them away for summer. I have gathered some of my current favorites to help inspire us all during this gorgeous season!

Nike Long-Sleeve T-Shirt
Fall is all about layers, which is why we love this long-sleeve t-shirt that will keep her warm and stylish, with a twist (literally). Use as a base layer underneath their fall coat and she’ll be warm no matter where her adventures take her.
Fall adventures call for a backpack they can store all their goodies, from snacks to extra layers. Turn to Nike’s Tanjun Backpack that does all of that and more, in style.
You can never have too many tees, especially if they’re as soft and versatile as this one. A favorite of ours, we love the color choices (available in 8 colors) and traditional design.
Your little kids pack their day with play. Ensure their feet are supported and protected with Nike Air Zoom Arcadia kicks, which feature a heel pull tab and hook-and-loop strap for easy-on, easy-off.
For a jacket that’ll take you from the mild fall days to the cooler winter ones, snag this Puffer Jacket that is made with synthetic down fill and guaranteed to keep her toasty all season long.
Cozy and comfortable is the name of the game when your little puts on this toddler crew and leggings set. Whether she’s virtual learning or out exploring on the weekend, she’s sure to be able to move, explore and be herself in this fresh style.
Hoodies are a staple of the fall and this one lives up to the hype. It’s made of French terry fabric making it lightweight enough to layer under a coat, but comfortable enough to wear on its own around the house.
Whether your kiddo is active or more of a sit-in-one-place type, Nike’s Sportswear pants fit the bill. Versatile enough for any activity, it’s no wonder these are only available in one color now (grab ‘em before it’s gone!).
We love these shoes for toddler and little kid feet. They’re flexible and forgiving for those who may not be confident walkers and runners. Add the soft cushioning and velcro, and the Nike Air Max Oketos are a must-have for fall fun.
The Nike Sportswear Windrunner Jacket will keep them protected through fall’s gusty winds. Bonus: the material consists of at least 75% recycled polyester fabric, making it a choice pick for those looking for more sustainable goods.
If he’s into sports or spending time active outdoors, he’ll need a suitable base layer. The Nike Pro Warm Training Top will provide warmth without the bulk.
Feel like you’re walking on clouds in the Nike Air VaporMax 2020. With strategically placed air units and a woven fabric that is breathable and supportive, your kids will be sprinting faster, playing harder and having more fun in these stylish kicks.
Layer these underneath shorts or wear them stand-alone for sports practice or parent-led PE. Kids will love that the Training Tights are stretchy, warm and breathable.
Looking for something fun and out of the ordinary? The Venice Canals are a perfect outing for families of all ages. Moms love tucking their little bundles into the stroller for a scenic walk while older kids dart around looking for ducks and race across the many arched bridges.
Tucked just a few blocks from the famous Muscle Beach and Venice Pier, this network of man-made canals were built in 1905 by developer Abbot Kinney as a homage to Venice, Italy. Back in the day gondolas took tourists on a tour while today small boats and canoes belonging to homeowners are moored along the route. Four canals stretch east-west, Carroll, Linnie, Howland, and Sherman while the Eastern and Grand Canals run north-south. This quaint neighborhood feels like a hidden pocket of Los Angeles, and the quiet atmosphere and fresh, ocean air does wonders!
When to Go: Year around, which is why we love this easy trip. During the winter months, the temperatures may be chilly and foggy (with cooler temperatures stretching into the spring) while the summer months provide cooling ocean breezes.
How to Get There: Aim for the intersection Dell and South Venice Blvd. Heading West on Venice Blvd., this will land you smack in the middle of the canals.
Parking: Parking is plentiful if you make the trip on a weekday. Look for spots at the top of the canals. Street cleaning is Tues. from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., so parking can be difficult. Weekends are always busy so hedge your bets and get there early.
Good to Know: Beachside is always cooler than expected, so always have a light jacket or cover up on hand. Yes, even in the summer!
What to Do: The walkways and bridges make a fun runway for kids of all ages to explore. Armadas of ducks float along the canals, the occasional pelican swoops in for a bite of fish, plus there are plenty of butterflies, squirrels, and housecats that make for a fun game of I Spy. Note that while most of the sidewalks along the canals are shielded by bushes, there are open spaces for the kids to get close to the water, so you’ll want to keep a hand on little ones. Signs are posted requesting visitors to not feed the ducks, but you might want to pack a few morsels of bread, just in case (wink wink).
Lunch Spots: Abbott Kinney is a short 5-10 minute walk from the canals and is brimming with places to shop and eat. Lemonade (1661 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice) is the closest destination and situated on the corner of Abbot Kinney and Venice. The chic buffet serves up light salads, specialty sandwiches, and the kid-perfect macaroni and cheese—not to mention refreshing blueberry lemonade. A surefire food fix is Abbott’s Pizza Company (1407 Abbot Kinney Blvd., Venice) where you can grab a slice or order up a pie.
Cost of Trip: Free, unless food or other souvenirs are desired.
Bonus: For some retail therapy for the children, hit up Burro Goods on Abbot Kinney (1409 Abbot Kinney, Venice). The boutique has lovely gifts, adorable clothes, and unique books and games.
How do you like your coffee? Black, with milk and sugar or…spun into the fabric of your kids’ new coat? If you prefer your coffee in a cup, hear us out. Reima, the kids activewear company out of Finland, is set to debut their newest innovation in kidswear: Coffee Bean Shimmer Fabric, available in a kids two-in-one down jacket and a one-piece newborn snowsuit. Released on September 29, which also happens to be National Coffee Day, these innovative outwear pieces will make you fall in love with coffee all over again.
These coats are seriously made out of coffee? What does the coffee do?
For the coffee-obsessed, you may be disappointed that the coats don’t actually smell like coffee. But, Reima’s smart textile engineers designed the fabric so that the particles of carbonized coffee grounds are spun into the polyester on a very microscopic level. According to the Reima team, they’re “very, very small.”
Even at a microscopic level, coffee lovers and non coffee aficionados will have to agree that the caffeinated design is innovative. Reima tells us that when tiny particles of ground coffee are carbonized at high temperature, the carbon forms honeycomb structures. By adding those particles into their 100% polyester material, Reima’s textile engineers are able to increase the fabric’s heat retention capability, which will help your kiddos stay warm. They go on to tell us that beyond storing heat, this process decreases the build-up of static electricity in the fabric, which prevents the formation of odors.
Besides the coffee grounds, what’s special about these new pieces? Just like Reima’s other designs, this kids jacket and newborn snowsuit are well made and durable. For families with multiple children who play hard, you can expect these two new outerwear pieces to hold up across multiple seasons and siblings. They won’t show wear or tear on the first tumble or rainy day.
The Coffee Bean Shimmer fabric is made with a waterproof, breathable PU lamination, which means that you can wear it from the warmer, early days of fall through the coldest winter months. Both styles are insulated with responsible down standard certified down and features, and for those looking for specifics, the fill power of the insulation is 550.
We love that the kids two-in-one down jacket can be worn as a jacket or a vest. The newborn one-piece honeycomb snowsuit also is multi-functional: wear it as a snowsuit with legs or convert it to a sleeping bag simply by closing the zip in the leg inseams from both directions. Either way you wear it, baby and the older kids, will stay dry and warm.
The two-in-one down jacket will be available in 6 colors from 4T-14Y and retails for $139.95. Choose from the slimmer “Heiberg” or the “Beringer” straight cut. The one-piece newborn coat will be available in three colors from 0-3 months, 3-6 months and 6-9 months and retails for $139.95. Starting September 29, 2020 buy online at us.reima.com or at amazon.com.
From your 20-week ultrasound to chasing a tottling toddler, your body has gone through incredible changes in such a short time. Celebrate those changes—and everything you’ve accomplished as a new mama—with clothes that make you look and feel your best. Anook Athletics, the covet-worthy athletic wear brand for pre- and postpartum moms features a line of high-quality, versatile styles that will take you from first trimester and beyond. They just released their new line of styles and we got the scoop below.
How Anook Athletics Is Different We’ll just come out and say it: This brand lives up to the hype. While many maternity collections promise quality goods that you’ll be able to wear beyond pregnancy, Anook Athletics actually delivers. We specifically tested the Poppy Leggings and Nila bra and here’s what we loved:
• Most maternity activewear leggings we’ve worn just don’t have that glove-like fit we’re used to with our fave non-pregnancy leggings. We’re either pulling up the belly band or adjusting it every few minutes so it gives us the coverage we need. Anook Athletics has it all figured out. Once you put on the leggings, they fit perfectly over every bump and curve—the material feels giving enough for a growing bump and supportive enough to last once baby arrives. The fabric is forgiving, but so well made it won’t stretch out.
• The Nila Bra is comfortable and stylish enough to wear even when not nursing. But if you are, the clips—which you can easily maneuver one-handed—allow for easy access.
• We love supporting mom-founded brands whose mission we can get behind. Founded by Allie Lindenmuth, an Austin-based prenatal yoga teacher and mom, Anook Athletics is all about empowering women through life’s biggest changes and challenges. Their styles are not trendy or cutesy but designed to be realistic to what pregnant and new moms experience, both emotionally and physically.
And, while it’s fair to consider the prices spendy, you’re investing in styles you’ll wear way beyond the pregnancy and infant months.

For the first time in nearly 20 years, the Girl Scouts uniform has been redesigned. The new official Girl Scout uniforms for Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors is available now. Key components include a new vest, sash and 18 pieces suitable for girls in grades six to 12.
FIT students Nidhi Bhasin, Jenny Feng and Melissa Posner were selected to create this exciting new line for Girl Scouts.
Bhasin said, “We drew inspiration from the Girl Scout archives as well as current trends! The main focus was on styles that fit all body types and satisfy different style preferences. ‘Everyday fashion’ and comfort were also important considerations for us during the design process. Ultimately, we want girls to feel proud to wear their Girl Scout uniform and apparel everywhere they go.”
The new collection is made up of interchangeable items including full-zip hoodies, crewneck tees, skater dresses, jogger pants and trefoil-branded baseball caps. The items range in price from $10 to $49 and are available in sizes up to 3XL.
Posner said, “We felt the Girl Scout uniform and other affiliated clothing needed to reflect more of the trends of the current time. The girls we talked with wanted more modern and functional clothing they can wear to Girl Scout and non-Girl Scout activities that can be easily styled formally and casually. With these points in mind, we elevated existing garments and created new pieces that reflected their requests, like incorporating pockets into the sash and introducing a denim jacket.”
