You just have to love Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is a lot of things—actor, producer, businessman, tequila maker, former professional wrestler, father, and husband. He’s also known as one of the most generous men in Hollywood, as one high school sophomore (and her entire school) found out— after she waited over two hours to meet him.

“This awesome girl (Carol) waited two hours to finally meet BLACK ADAM,” Johnson wrote on his Instagram page. “His heart may be cold and black, but it still beats 🖤. Especially, for kids.” The video shows an ecstatic Carol trying to hold it together while meeting The Rock. She can’t stop smiling or crying as he stops to take a selfie and other photos with her. He asked her what school she goes to and how her grades are and then posted the video of the pair meeting along with a special surprise.

“Great to meet you, Carol and tell all your friends at Crosstown High, that I’m giving ALL OF YOU FREE TICKETS TO WATCH BLACK ADAM⚡️at your local theater on OPENING NIGHT!!!” he said.

Black Adam is a comic book legend, and Shazam’s archrival. According to IMDB, “Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the Egyptian gods-and imprisoned just as quickly-Black Adam is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.” Producers will be depicting Johnson’s character as an anti-hero more so than the supervillain he’s portrayed as in the comics, with all the sparkle and shine he brings to any role he plays.

“The Justice Society was the FIRST superhero team in the comic world – even before Justice League,” Johnson wrote of his character. “It’s a very cool and perfect time to build out the DC UNIVERSE with these awesome new characters from the DC pantheon.”

The much-anticipated movie hits theaters in October, and the lucky students of Crosstown High will all be in attendance. “My team will be in touch with you and your family for details,” Johnson continued. “Thanks for being awesome and SURPRISE! Enjoy the movie on OCT 21st!! He’ll go back to being ruthless and full of rage tomorrow.”

San Alfonso del Mar Resort - Algarrobo, Chile

Steffan via Flickr

Ever wonder where the biggest pool in the world is? For about a decade, you would have found the answer in the Southern Hemisphere along the central coast of Chile. While the Chilean-based company behind the project broke its own record in 2015 with the CityStars pool in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt, San Alfonso del Mar is still huge at 20 acres and maybe a little easier to get to (it’s about 60 miles west of Chile’s capital city, Santiago). Save the laps for those traditional pools, though you’re more than welcome to swim some 3,300 feet across San Alfonso del Mar. 11 Themed Restaurants Every Kid Should Experience Once

It’s been coming for a while now, and Hudson Yards, the zillion dollar live/work/play/shop development on Manhattan’s west side is now officially open! New York City’s newest neighborhood (located left of The Highline between 10th and 11th Avenues and 30th and 34th Street) is a sight to behold, and it’s packed with activities for young and old. (Yes, particularly if you’ve got some cash to spend.) Still, it is possible to enjoy Hudson Yards with the kids without going broke. Here’s our guide to doing Hudson Yards with the kids: what to do, where to eat, and what to see!

The Basics

Related/Oxford

In case you missed the memo, Hudson Yards is the largest private real estate development in the history of the country and the largest development in the city of New York since Rockefeller Center.

When it is fully completed, it will include more than 18 million square feet of commercial and residential space, more than 100 shops, a variety of restaurants and 4,000 apartments.

There's also a public square and gardens area at the center of it all.

 Vessel

Forbes Massie

Looking like the spaceship of some alien invaders come to rule us humans, Vessel is a structure of 154 intricately interconnecting flights of stairs, totaling nearly 2,500 individual steps and 80 landings. Designed by British designer Thomas Heatherwick and Heatherwick Studio, the copper-colored structure is free to climb and explore and offers views of the Hudson River and the surrounding area. It measures 50-feet wide at its base and widens to 150-feet across at its full height, and serves as the center of the public square and gardens area.

Take note: while it is free to climb, you need a timed ticket to enter Vessel. You can get those here. (While many slots are booked, a block is opened every day at 8 a.m. to reserve a spot for same day entry.) Click here for more info on ticketing for Vessel.

Also: if you and the kids are too tired, there is an elevator that will take you right to the top.

The Shed

Amelia L. via Yelp

The Shed is a new non-profit cultural organization located where The Highline meets Hudson Yards. Snark Park

Snark Park

From the New York-based design studio known as Snarkitecture comes Snark Park, a monochromatic mashup of art, design, playhouse and yes, unique Instagram-friendly immersive experience. Snark Park is the first entirely Snarkitecture-designed experience, and it will change three times a year. The first installation, Lost and Found, is described as a "modern-day enchanted forest" – built from a series of massive, inhabitable columns, each offering a unique, tactile experience. A series of totems lines the space and many of them are inhabitable and built with custom materials: EPS foam, mirror tile, acoustic paneling, cork, latex, ping-pong balls, faux fur, among others. Deeper into the installation, visitors discover a hidden, two-way mirrored room.

Rounding out the high-concept experience, Snark Park will also sell its own KITH Treats ice cream flavor "Snark Bite", with traditional KITH menu items. (Lots of sugary cereal mix-ins.) And of course, you can purchase a Snark Park souvenir, including the stuffie mascot "Snarky."

Tickets must be bought online for a specific time slot.

Tickets: $28/adults; $22/kids; free/kids four and under

HYxOFFTHEWALL

Mimi O'Connor

Throughout Hudson Yards, you'll find fun and funky large-scale murals, interactive/3D displays and tableaus from 13 artists, a collection curated and produced by @CultureCorps. Again, plenty of fodder for Instagram feeds of young and old, but don't miss Lara Schnitger's "I Was Here" (pictured), an enormous "interactive sequin tapestry" you're encouraged to leave your mark on. (On view through the end of 2019.)

The Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards

A glittering, multi-level luxury emporium, the mall at Hudson Yards is home to numerous ultra high-end brands (Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Brooks Brothers, Chanel, Dior) as well as dining options that range from destination and special occasion to foodie-friendly fast-casual. Here are the most kid- and wallet- friendly spots.

Shop

Micro Kickboard

Mimi O'Connor

The first brick-and-mortar location for everyone's favorite scooter, this storefront showcases all of Micro Kickboard's  products (for both kids and adults) and even has the ride-on luggage model for kids 18 months and up so you can actually get through the airport. Most amazing feature: the scooter track so you can take a few models for a literal spin.

Dylan's Candy Bar

Mimi O'Connor

Dylan Lauren continues her candy-coated march across New York, with the opening of her sixth Candy Bar location. This store has all the technicolor candy and decor of the chain's other stores, with bulk candy, nostalgia candy, candy you can customize, ice cream, and tons more treats. (If the response the store got from the candy-crazed adults on opening night is any indication of the shop's appeal, your kids will go bonkers for this place.)

PiQ

Mimi O'Connor

Another colorful retail spot in Hudson Yards, PiQ is full of nothing you and the kids actually need but at least a few things you'll desperately want. (The chain also has locations in Rockefeller Center and Grand Central Terminal.) From cute, cuddly, and kawaii merch to New York City-themed goods, fun books, games, sparkly jewelry, gag gifts, writing and art supplies and much more, this is a store that's fun to browse, is a great place to pick up a birthday present or two, and you can make it out of without bankrupting yourself.

milk & honey babies

Mimi O'Connor

Residents of The Garden State may remember milk & honey babies' first store in Englewood, New Jersey, which closed. The sweet store is back and in Hudson Yards, selling adorable and high-quality layette, toys, nursing supplies, books, and super cute stuffies (we're partial to the fluffy, glam ostriches by Jelly Cat). You'll also find gifts for New York City babies (taxi-themed items) as well as a baby feeding room! (Now that's service!)

Level 2
Online: hudsonyardsnewyork.com

H & M

Mimi O'Connor

Yes, there are other H&Ms around the city, but Hudson Yards is now home to the new flagship for the retailer. In a similar vein, there's also a Uniqlo here if you're in the market to upgrade your kid's duds.

Eat

Eat: Quick Bites

Mimi O'Connor

As mentioned, you can dine in style at any number of chef-driven restaurants (Thomas Keller's Tak Room, modern Asian at Wild Ink, Michael Lomonaco's Hudson Yards Grill, etc.) but with the kids you'll probably want something a bit moire casual.

Choices abound. Shake Shack is here (level 4), with a new kids menu item, "chick'n bites."  fuku, from David Chang, sells fried chicken sandwiches, chickpea mac n cheese, slushies, and even a mini sando without seasoning for picky palates (level 2).

Milos Wine Bar (level 5) has a greek yogurt and toppings bar you can enjoy on site or take to go.

Need an organic burger? Head to Balcampo on level 4.

And to graze a marketplace of Spanish tapas and dishes,  explore Mercado Little Spain from chef José Andrés on level 1.

You can also grab something healthy at sweetgreen at 10 Hudson Yards.

Eat: Treats

Mimi O'Connor

There are numerous spots to satisfy a sweet tooth at Hudson Yards, from classic to gourmand.

The complex is home to the newest Van Leeuwen ice cream store (it's vegan and made from scratch in Brooklyn); the store will be selling the limited-edition flavor "Off the Rails"  for the next month—it's a nod to Hudson Yards' train depot origins and is a mix of peanut butter cups, pretzels, marshmallows, and salted caramel swirls.

Vegan treats and coffee can also be found at Jack's Stir Brew. You'll also find the "Little Joey" and "Little Zoe" hot chocolates, specifically made not-too-hot for the kids. (Level 4) Co

Coffee fanatics will be pleased to learn that Blue Bottle has a store here as well, located on level 2.

For some familiar favorite treats, William Greenberg Desserts sells kosher baked goods including its famous black and white cookies (level 3), and Thomas Keller's Bouchon Bakery has fine pastries in addition to coffee and heartier fare.

Fancy chocolate can be picked up for gifts or immediate consumption at Li-lac Chocolates, Manhattan's oldest chocolate house, located on level 4.

Getting There

Train, Bus, Stroll

MTA via Flickr

You can stroll (or roll a stroller) right into the mall from The Highline, and it's a short walk west on street-level as well.

There is also a shiny new subway station that empties out right onto the public square area near The Vessel and The Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards. It's served by the 7 train, and features some lovely mosaics to look at as you take the long escalator ride up or down. (It's deep, and is accessible with an elevator.)

You can also take the A or C to Penn Station and catch the M34 select bus across town to 10th Avenue.

Kid-Friendly Culture: NYC Museum Exhibits to See Now

The world is getting keyed-up for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, and of course, New York is no exception. If this Olympic Games is like any other, New Yorkers in every borough will cheer on U.S. athletes — as well as competitors from other countries considered first homes for so many transplants — all month long. We’ve found a way to kick off the festivities with the kids in style!

Welcome to Rio!
From Friday, August 5 to Thursday, August 11, “Rio on the Hudson” will take over Pier 26 in Hudson River Park. Free and open to the public, the event will transform Pier 26 into a playscape for young and old inspired by the Olympic Games and host country Brazil.

Visitors can expect beaches, real palm trees, samba music and dancers and Capoeira performances, as well as Brazilian DJs, live graffiti artists creating large-scale Olympic-themed murals, and Brazilian food and drink.

Opening Night
If your family likes its Olympic Games-watching experience to be communal, this might be your spot to view to the Opening Ceremony broadcast. The event opens at 5 p.m. on Friday August 5, with a team USA Celebration featuring a cauldron lighting and kickoff at 7 p.m., followed by the Opening Ceremony broadcast at 7:30 on a big screen.

Meet & Greet Olympians
One of the highlights of the event — especially, we imagine, for aspiring mini Olympians — will be meet and greets with Olympic athletes and current Paralymipans, the latter of which will be heading to Rio in September to compete.

Athletes currently scheduled to appear include Christie Rampone, Mia Hamm, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Rudy Garcia-Tolson, Scout Bassett, Steve Serio and Sam Kavanagh.

Fun & Games
Rio on the Hudson will give visitors a few opportunities to test their own athletic prowess. Kids can participate in an Olympic Hula Hoop contest; test their speed in the “dash” against Olympian Allyson Felix by racing against her high school or Olympic times, and join a pickup beach volleyball game.

Additional kids programming includes face-painting, and multiple crafting activities such as making your very own Olympic torch.

Learn & Watch Some Brazilian Moves
Both kids and adults can take lessons in the Brazilian martial art Capoeria, and then see how the pros (of all ages) do it at performances. Rio on the Hudson will also feature multiple Samba performances and mixers.

Don’t Forget to Eat
All that dancing and dashing will make you hungry. Top NYC Brazilian chefs will be cooking up traditional and authentic pao de quiejo, fried plantains with sett chili sauce, steak & cilantro empanadas, beef skewers and flan and caramel.

A holiday season without model train shows is like the North Pole without elves. Don’t let this jolly time of year pass you by without seeing one! The following four miniature trains are chugging and choo-choo’ing near you — and each have something different to offer.

photo: Chicago Botanic Garden

Wonderland Express at Chicago Botanic Garden
Outdoors at the North Shore’s garden paradise, you can walk meandering pathways and soak up more than 750,000 outdoor lights. Indoors, things are just as magical. In Nichols Hall, watch garden-scale trains wind past miniature replicas of more than 80 Chicago-area landmarks, including Navy Pier, Soldier Field and Millennium Park. These landmarks are no ordinary tchotchkes — they’ve been crafted from natural materials like moss, leaves, bark and acorns. Another model train will weave by more landmarks set around the North Pool of Krehbiel Gallery, transformed into an English country train platform. If all this chugging around has made you hungry, you can whet your whistle at the Caboose Café and Wonderland Express Shoppe, which offers refreshments and souvenirs, including a memory book detailing how the replicas were created by Applied Imagination Studio.

Held thru Jan. 3
Tickets: $12/adults; $10/ages 3-12; Free for ages 2 & under. Members receive $2 off each ticket. Prices are half price on Tuesdays.

Winter Flower & Train Show at Lincoln Park Conservatory
This is a train show Santa himself would be proud of. In the Show House, an old-fashioned steam engine and freight trains wind their way through a pint-sized village nestled amid poinsettias and princettias. In fact, it’s the beautiful winter blooms (Luv U Pink, Merlot, Ice Punch and Infinity Polar) that make this show so alluring. The village is comprised entirely of natural materials, including willow, spruce and birch woods. Imagine yourself in the conductor’s seat as the train passes by a variety of Chicago-style homes and famous buildings like The Chicago Theatre and Chicago Water Tower Place.

Enchanted Railroad at Morton Arboretum
This one usually pulls into the station over the holidays. But this year, because of the wildly popular “Illumination” light show happening at the Arboretum, the 13th annual mini train exhibit will be on view in January. Expect an intricate model railroad winding through a new four-seasons-themed display. Good news for toddlers: The display is designed to be easily seen from two feet off the ground. In fact, there are two levels of trains to ogle.

Held Jan. 15-Feb. 21; Mon.-Fri., 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Sat. & Sun., 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

There’s listening to live music, and then there’s listening to waltzes and show tunes on 32-foot-tall outdoor pipe organs at Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park. A San Diego landmark since 1914, it’s the perfect spot for kids to soak up music that goes beyond The Fresh Beat Band.

Explore the Organ
This one-of-a-kind organ contains 4,530 pipes ranging in length from mere inches to 32 feet tall, and weighs more than 100,000 pounds. It’s been entertaining audiences for the past 90-plus years with internationally acclaimed organists (like Dr. Carol Williams, the resident Civic Organist and Artistic Director of the Spreckels Organ Society) and featured guests including the San Diego Children’s Choir. This is a great way to get your kiddos introduced to live music performance.

Attend a Concert
One of the best things about Spreckels Organ Pavilion is that it provides incredible entertainment for free. Every Sunday, from 2-3 p.m., your family  can make your way to Balboa Park and not only witness an invaluable piece of San Diego history, but partake in music styles ranging from classical to contemporary.

The other awesome thing about the Pavilion is the summer concert series. There are free concerts from June through August, with visiting musicians featured every Monday evening starting at 7:30 p.m. (opening night of the 27th Annual International Summer Organ Festival is Monday, June 23). If you want weeknight entertainment, stop by Tuesday through Thursday for the Twilight in the Park concert series, starting June 17. These evenings tout a variety of bands that will remind you why live music is always a good idea.

Another reason we love the Spreckels Organ Pavilion is its beautiful outdoor space. Kids can pretend to be stars on the big stage (when there’s not a concert happening) while parents can relax in the Pavilion benches.

Hot Tip
Be sure to check out the Sunday concert calendar to view the upcoming afternoon lineups, and then start planning your family’s summer nights by visiting the summer events schedule.

Looking for an easy escape from the urban sprawl? Ellensburg offers a laid-back atmosphere that’s fun-filled for the entire family with shops, museums, kid-friendly restaurants, hiking, fishing camping and more!

Jump around in a bouncy house, practice your painting skills on pumpkins and watch in awe as 20-foot puppets march through the farmers market. Sounds like a party you want to join, right? On September 27 and 28 gather your brood for Buskers in the Burg and prepare to spend two days surrounded by cool art, music, good eats and more.

Kick-off opening night with a variety show filled with stunts, magic and comedy. Or, if you’re looking for some adult-only fun, treat yourself to a wine and beer walk exploring downtown’s brew pub, tasting rooms and shops.

On Saturday, see giant robots and other larger-than-life puppets created by Seattle artist Brian Kooser and members of the community march in what will surely be a memorable puppet parade. After the parade, chase your little tykes through a straw maze, explore a firehouse or ride a pony in the festival’s free kid’s area. Yeah, that’s right, free.

And that’s not all. Buskers in the Burg boasts amazing street performers who add a unique flavor this festival. From magicians to comedians, jugglers and stunt artists these performers will have your little half pints giggling with delight.
