Whether you need a day trip or have more time to spare, these are the best California winter road trips, and perhaps, dare we say, are even more fun than their summertime counterparts

As we locals know, winter in California is especially fun because you can find both snowy mountains and sunny beaches just a short(ish) drive away. From the sparkling beaches of Santa Barbara to the snow-covered mountain town of Big Bear, here are our favorite California winter road trip ideas to take with the kids.

1. Big Bear & Snow Summit

While we have a whole article dedicated to where to find snow near LA, worthwhile mentions include Big Bear Mountain and Snow Valley below. Both are chock full of winter activities and sports for the whole family. Stay for the day or easily spend a few days learning new skills. Beginner shredders can take snowboard lessons (from age four years old and up) and avid skiers and snowboarders can take a half or full-day lessons at either Bear Mountain or Snow Summit.

2. Snow Valley Mountain Resort

This smaller mountain is great for snow angels just beginning their snow-journey. It's also less crowded than big brother mountain (Big Bear). For the little ones, head to the Children's Learning Center where snow bunnies can learn to ski or snowboard. Moreover, there's a snow play area where you can enjoy Southern California’s only chairlift-serviced sledding area. After the scenic chairlift ride, you get to whiz down the longest downhill sled ride in the region.

4. Ojai

If you're looking for a serene getaway that's off the beaten path and immersed in nature, Ojai is the destination for you. Daily highs during the winter months hover around the mid-60s, which may be a bit too cold for swimming, but it's perfect for flying kites, splashing in the waves, and building castles in the sand.

7. Joshua Tree

Check a visit to the stunning Joshua Tree National Park off your bucket list this season. Winter is a great time to hike this desert terrain featuring towering boulders, and picturesque cacti and trees. For a hike, the one-mile loop trail through Hidden Valley is a good introduction for little ones. Start your adventure at the West entrance, then work your way along the road, exiting the park at the South. Head north past Redding (but not without making a stop at the Redding Garden of Lights detailed below) to the tranquil county of Siskiyou that extends to the California-Oregon border. Here you'll find gorgeous hikes like the Hedge Creek Falls Trail in Dunsmuir and the McCloud Falls Trail. Spend some time fishing for trout and exploring all of the outdoor adventures that the area has to offer. If nature is calling to you and you'd like to explore some of the more remote areas like the Puntarenas and OSA Peninsula, your best bet is to work with a group like Tailored Costa Rica, who will put together packages for you. These areas are scenic and magical but rarely have all-inclusive packages other than food. Tailored Costa Rica will take care of everything like car rental, transportation, food packages, and booking your accommodations so you can have that all-in experience while going a bit more off the beaten path.

A note on safety:

The natural majesty of the rain forest comes with its charms and dangers, and we would be remiss if we didn't point out the importance of being aware of which beaches have strong riptides and having a conversation with your kiddos about creatures like the beautiful little frogs that are awesome to look, but one should avoid touching. 

We've spent 14 days in Costa Rica, rented a car, and explored from coast to coast with kids ages 3 and 7 without any issues. We did have family conversations around safety before we left, especially with my inquisitive 3-year-old.

Where to Stay in Tahoe: The North Shore

For those who prefer the north side of the lake, the Village at Northstar boasts a ton of comfy lodging options for you and the fam and most rooms come with a mini kitchen so you can cook up your own hot cocoa. Dine at the Bourbon Pub in the Village and go ice skating at the on-site rink.

For an elevated experience, check into the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe mid-mountain at Northstar. Expect five-star Ritz-Carlton service, with ski-in-ski-out convenience, plus a spa worth bribing your significant other to take the kids for a couple of hours. Two- and three-bedroom luxury residences make for an easy family retreat or upgrade your hotel room to concierge level for all those benefits.

If being close to the action is what you crave, the Village at Tahoe Palisades plunks you and the fam just steps from the gondola, lifts, shops and great restaurants of the former Olympic Village. Condos come in all sizes from studios to three-bedrooms, so there’s room for all. Bonus: many have hot tubs!

Tahoe Getaways also offers some stunning homes perfect for groups or large families, including some homes within residential community Mountainside at Northstar, which offers everything from ski butler, to a communal club house with a fitness center and heated pool, to back doors that open up right to the runs on the mountain.

Where to Stay in Tahoe: The South Shore

On the South side of the lake, there are sometimes better deals to be found, as well as some top-notch skiing. The Hotel Becket boasts gorgeous modern rooms and is located just across the street from Heavenly Village, which offers 4,800 acres of world-class skiing and snow boarding. The Landing Lake Tahoe Resort and Spa, a Destination Hotel, offers a popcorn cart, snowga (yoga in the snow!) and helicopter programming to take your visit the the sky! The all-suite Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel means extra room for families to spread out plus free breakfast (think: eggs and bacon!) is included in every stay so the family hits the slopes with full bellies.  

If you’re looking to team up with another family or simply prefer more space, (plus have your own yard for snowman-building and snowball-hurling) the widest array of options are found on vrbo.com or airbnb.com.

Where to Ski in Tahoe

Some of you may be itching to get the little ones up on skis for the first time. If they’re ready to go for it, most of the larger ski resorts have ski schools that are perfect for tiny beginners. Palisade Tahoe's program takes kids as young as three and these “Pioneers" learn on the flats, with about a 3-to-1 student to teacher ratio. Slightly older kids (4-6) learn with the Explorers group. Northstar-at-Tahoe’s youth ski/snowboard  program takes three-year-olds and up as well.

Insider Tip: For first-timers, most resorts recommend starting off with a half-day, to keep their little legs from getting too tired, then checking them into day care so kids can have a blast while you go big on the slopes. Check out our full  guide to kids' ski and snowboard lessons.

But if the real thrill is teaching your little shredder yourself, there are plenty of slopes perfect for learning. The Little Dipper sits right behind the Ritz-Carlton and even has it's own mini chair lift, which tends to make kids extra excited about the whole snowy endeavor. Closer to Northstar Village, there are two Kids' Adventure Parks with tiny terrain perfect for the beginner to practice on.

Where to Sled, Skate, Sleigh & Snowtube in Tahoe

Snow Play in Tahoe: This outdoor adventure wonderland is perfect for families who have more on their wish list than skiing and snowboarding. While there are great options for downhill and cross-country here, we went nuts for the snow play area. Sledding (sleds provided!), tubing and even a snowball launch make this an all-in-one winter wonderland for kids (and grownups who may have forgotten the joy of coasting down a snow-covered hill on their butts). Ample parking and one ticket lets you play all day. There are fire pits, picnic tables and a food truck serving up sandwiches, hot cocoa and more.

Sledding in Tahoe: Bundled-up kids will enjoy a sleigh ride pulled by horses: there’s one at Sand Harbor Nevada State Park, a family-run outfit. Dog-sledding trips might thrill older kids who can stand to be on a husky-pulled sled for an hour. Also check out Running Creek Dog Sled Rides if you think this classic outdoors adventure is a fit for your family.

If your tot prefers to pull his own sled, there are dozens of options for sledding hills and tubing parks all around the lake. If you’re planning to ski at one of the major resorts, you’ll be glad to know that Squaw, Northstar, Kirkwood and Sierra-at-Tahoe all boast tubing parks where kids can slide in a giant doughnut for a small fee. And the smaller resorts have some pretty tricked-out sledding hills these days, too: Soda Springs lets tots as little as three take its tow ropes to the Tube Express, or, for a slower ride, the Little Dipper; Granlibakken rents saucers (no tubes or toboggans). For good, old-fashioned classic sledding, there are some hills around the lake that do it old-school: BYO sled, and best of all, no fee.

Ice Skating in Tahoe: And let’s not leave out that classic winter pastime: ice skating! The year-round rink at Northstar (roller-skating in the summer) is in the center of the village, so parents can sip a hot toddy while kids twirl away in their sightline on the ice. And the resort at Squaw Creek’s outdoor rink makes a perfect photo op, with its Sierra backdrop and hot chocolate on hand.

Where to Eat in Tahoe with Kids

Pretty much any of the restaurants within the villages at Northstar or Squaw are perfect for filling up your snow covered crew any time of day. The Michael Mina Bourbon Pub is a great option for families looking for comfort food with all the beverages to go with it. But if you are venturing out to the towns, there are lots of family-friendly places to check out.

Dine in an old train car Jax at the Trax, which serves up thick milkshakes, sweet potato fries and even whipped cream topped Irish coffees for mom and dad. This Truckee favorite is almost always bustling, but the incredibly friendly staff will make sure you feel well taken care of. The menu is multiple pages long and even offers breakfast favorites served all day. Portions are large, so maybe pick a few favorites and go family style. Their chicken fingers are the real deal (as opposed to of the suspiciously shaped McNugget variety), so order 'em up.

For some special views, the lakeside dining at Riva Grill in South Lake Tahoe is surprisingly kid-friendly. Order up a Virgin Woody (the nonalcoholic version of their famous house cocktail) and soak up the scenery of that iconic lake.

For the best Frosty the Snowman pancakes in town, grab a table at Donner Lake Kitchen. It’s tucked behind the Donner Pines Market on Donner Pass Road. The service is as sweet as the M&Ms used for Frosty’s buttons, and the menu is extensive (we recommend the Bloody Marys for mom and dad). The portions are massive, but luckily they offer half sizes on the most monster-sized meals. They are only open for breakfast and lunch.

On your way in our out of town, be sure to fuel up at the Wagon Train Coffee Shop. Located in the heart of downtown Truckee, right on the strip, this place is a must visit for a taste of local flavor and fun. A model train runs on tracks suspended over the dining room and dozens of license plates and taxidermy trophy heads line the walls. The family business has been going strong for decades and their baked goods are out of this world. Just don’t try and ask what is in the biscuit’s sweet sauce—that’s proprietary. This place is a haven for thoughtful parents who want to let their partner sleep in, as they open up at 5:30 a.m. every morning and offer early bird pricing during those wee hours. 

Tips for Driving to Tahoe

During the snowy season, always carry chains when driving to Tahoe (unless you are driving a four-wheel-drive with snow tires). But if you come empty handed, there are always chain services selling and installing on the side of the road, and you'll pay from $50 to $75 for the whole shebang, without ever having to get out of your car.

Bundle Up for These 11 Easy Winter Hikes

Cedar Butte—North Bend

If a view is what you’re after, but you’d like to avoid the crowds, try this lesser-known trail that’s just across the way from Rattlesnake Ledge in North Bend. While you won’t find the crowds, you will find a moderate hike that kids can handle that ends with a spectacular view of Mt. Si and Mailbox Peak—two hikes that should be on your before-they-turn-12 bucket list. Start this one in the morning and enjoy lunch overlooking the area.

It doesn’t get better than an easy, level hike when you’ve got toddlers in tow, and Moss Lake fits this bill. The hike starts with an intriguing art installation and continues on past the wetlands to a conifer forest. It’s a place where you can hike for a bit and then turn around without much hassle once the kids get tired. And if all else fails, follow the gravel path down to the water and hope you spot some eagles or hawks before calling it a day.

Always a hit with the kids, no matter what time of year it is, Discovery Park has it all. An expansive beach complete with lighthouse, a nature-themed playground and miles of easy trails that take families from the forest to the Sound. Just hop on the loop trail and see where it takes you. In one big circle or along a divergent path.

Coal Creek Falls—Issaquah

Waterfall hikes are always a hit with the kids, and we love the fact you don’t have to travel too far to get to this one. Clocking in at just over two-miles, this trail is the definition of family-friendly. It’s not too muddy and is a pretty steady climb up to the waterfall, which every parent knows makes for an easy trip on the way down. There are tons of trails to explore here, so be sure to follow the Red Town Trail, to the Cave Hole Trail until you hit the Coal Creek Falls trail to finish out the hike. Enjoy the view!

Narbeck Wetland Sanctuary—Everett

Much of it winds through the wetlands along an elevated boardwalk, so kids can be in the thick of it, looking for birds, ducks and maybe even a beaver or two. Plus, Fido can join in this outdoor adventure too (as long as your pooch is on a leash), so that means everyone in the fam can enjoy this easy winter walk.

Winter is a great time to visit this popular state park and avoid the summer crowds. Even without the warmth of the summer sun, it’s got everything you need to make the most of your day hiking. Beautiful beaches, unbeatable views and miles of trails to choose from. Plus, after the kids are tuckered out from all that fresh air and exercise, they’ll easily fall asleep in car on the way home.

This Eastside park is a great spot for urban hikers of all ages. Situated next to Lake Sammamish, its easy trails wind through the old growth forest, and you can't help but stop to take in the lake view every once in a while as you explore. Keep your ears peeled for woodland creatures and the sound of unsuspecting waterfalls dotted throughout the forest as you hike. Add this one to your regular hiking rotation.

Tolt-MacDonald State Park—Carnation

If rivers and forests are your hiking jam, the trails at Tolt-MacDonald are the place to be this winter. Your adventure starts with a bridge crossing over the Snoqualmie River and continues along the Cottonwood Trail Loop. The loop itself is about two miles and has a few cross trails so you can cut your hike short if you need to. Plus, much of the path skirts the river so your kiddos can stop to throw rocks along the way and jump in puddles.

Boulder Garden Loop—North Bend

This sweet little trail is an offshoot of the super popular one that leads up Little Si. Clocking in around 2 miles, it leads hikers along a wooded trail to an oversized boulder that would fit right in somewhere in Middle Earth. Stick to this easy, level trail or add a trip up Little Si if your kiddos are feeling extra adventurous (Little Si is about 4.5 miles round trip). Psst.. the Little Si bonus is a great one to do if your kids are in a carrier. Either way, you’ll have fun with this one!

If a hike at a wastewater treatment plant doesn’t sound appealing, think again. This easy hike is as family-friendly as it comes, whether you’re carting kids in the stroller or need space for them to roam safely. You’ll spy local wildlife and find wetlands, streams and ponds as you wander the gravel-paved trails here. Stick to a short mile long hike or piece them all together to make an afternoon of it. If Rover wants to come, just remember the leash.

Wallace Falls—Gold Bar

This popular, well-maintained path along the Wallace River has all the bells and whistles for a fantastic family outing. Old growth forest, plenty of rest stops and views that come in waves. Families can hike the complete waterfall trail or turn around at either the lower or middle sections (the section between the middle and upper falls is the hardest) and still feel good about getting out and spending time in nature. Whatever turnaround point you choose, be sure to veer right at the Woody Trail junction to take the most direct route to the summit.

Winter hiking tips:
1. Remember to bring your Discover Pass if you’re hiking in a state park.

2. Expect lots of wet and muddy trails when you hike in the winter (some trails may even have frost or a bit of snow left). Sturdy shoes are a must, and a quick check of the Washington Trails Association’s trail reports (for the latest conditions) helps everyone have a good time.

3. Our winters may be mild, but it can still get chilly, especially on an overcast or wet day. Layers work well, and don’t forget to pack your rain gear, even if the forecast calls for dry skies.

4. Remember to pack water bottles and snacks for the trail (and to pack them out too!) to keep tummies full and kiddos happy.

After spending a few days in the capital city, we were delighted to discover everything from a meandering river district to a hip enclave south of Main Street.

Little Rock Arkansas

River Market District & North Little Rock 

When it comes to deciding what to do in Little Rock, Arkansas, we recommend spending the most time in the River Market District and North Little Rock. There is ample lodging that puts you within walking distance of most of the downtown attractions, and the food choices are unique. And, with the free METRO streetcar that runs through downtown and over the Arkansas River to North Little Rock, getting out and about is a breeze.

What to Do

History buffs will want to check out the Historic Arkansas Museum, which has several impressive exhibits. Tiny tots will want to spend all of their time in the Sturgis Children’s Gallery, which has a play log cabin perfect for big imaginations. An important exhibit is We Walk in Two Worlds: The Caddo, Osage, and Quapaw People of Arkansas, found in the Native American gallery. There are 158 objects on display ranging from tools to clothing and pottery, all of which tell the story and the journey of the Native American people of Arkansas. 

If you love nature and the outdoors, visit the Witt Stephens Jr. Central Arkansas Nature Center. This 3.4-acre center on the Arkansas river focuses on the outdoor adventure opportunities in Arkansas. There are learning exhibits indoors and plenty of wildlife viewing (in an urban setting) outdoors. 

It will be hard to hang out in the River Market District without paying a visit to the William J. Clinton Library and Museum. The state of Arkansas is home to former President Bill Clinton, and in his library, you’ll view almost 100,000 objects and works of art, many of which the Clintons received from dignitaries and world leaders during his time in office.

An afternoon at the Museum of Discovery is a must for curious kids. A fun exhibit for older kids is Tornado Alley. It does a great job of re-telling the story of the tornadoes that devastated parts of downtown Little Rock in 1999. Another fun area to explore is the exhibit with experiments on the human body. Discover your resting heart rate and reaction time, and challenge someone in your group to a battle of the minds. Strap on a headband that reads brain waves, then, using only your mind, move a ball towards your opponent. 

There is so much to do in Riverfront Park. Kids will love the ​​Margaret Clark Adventure Playground. It offers a two-story slide, climbing webs, a boulder climbing wall, and other attractions. The Vogel Schwartz Sculpture Garden puts art on display for everyone to enjoy, and the Peabody Splash Park is a great way to cool off on a hot day.

Drive or ride the METRO street car a short distance over the river to watch an Arkansas Travelers game. There isn’t a bad seat in the house at this minor league baseball stadium, and with themed days and lots of ballpark snacks, it’s an affordable way to enjoy America’s pastime.

Where to Eat

If you want breakfast or brunch, get up early and head to At The Corner. A modern diner with everything from pancakes to chicken-n-waffle and brunch poutine, there is often a line out the door here. 

For adventurous eaters, be sure to stroll Ottenheimer Market Hall. You’ll find everything from Thai and Indian to BBQ and Middle Eastern cuisine. Be sure to plan because the market closes at 2 p.m. on weekdays and 3 p.m. on weekends.

Dizzy's Gypsy Bistro is a short walk from the riverfront and close to several hotels. It’s got an artsy vibe, an oversized front patio and menu items ranging from salmon to hamburgers, and various pasta options for kids.

This up-and-coming neighborhood has funky shops, unique museums, and locally-owned restaurants.

What to Do

Spend some time in Bernice Garden. There are several sculptures, acoustic music Saturdays, and a Sunday farmer’s market. Walk the neighborhood to find several vibrant murals, take older kids to the ESSE Museum, one of two purse museums in existence, and admire the Villa Marre, a restored Italianate 2nd Empire mansion featured on the ‘80s hit sitcom Designing Women.

What to Eat 

Do not leave Little Rock without eating at The Root Cafe. This locally-owned restaurant was our favorite foodie stop during our trip. A cozy setting with paintings, funky light fixtures, a large outside patio, and great food, the owners strive to source as much of their supplies locally as possible, so you’ll be dining on eggs, meats, cheese, and veggies from nearby farms. 

For a sweet treat, head across the street to Loblolly Creamery, which offers a great list of ice cream made on the premises. There are vegan options, and you can even order an “ice cream flight” if you can’t decide what to get.

Midtown

Midtown offers plenty of fun for families. There’s an abundance of parks, shops and restaurants to explore. 

What to Do

The Little Rock Zoo is one of the best things to do in Little Rock, Arkansas with kids. There are 33 acres and 500 animals to discover, a carousel to ride, a baby Rhino to see, a science center to explore, and much more. War Memorial Park backs up to the zoo and amongst its 100+ acres, you'll find walking trails, a hammock park, a playground and splash pad, and a fishing pond. In addition, in 2023, the University of Arkansas Razorbacks will play at the War Memorial Park stadium. Allsopp Park, located in the Hillcrest region of Midtown, is another place to enjoy the natural beauty of Arkansas. There are hiking and biking trails, tennis courts, basketball courts, and more.

Where to Eat

Hillcrest Little Bakery is a block down from the zoo and serves homemade biscuit sandwiches and some of the best pancakes in Little Rock. The charming family-owned establishment is in a renovated home, so be aware that seating is limited. All Aboard Restaurant & Grill is a favorite with young kids for a reason. Not only is there a train table in the lobby, but your food is delivered via train right to your table. Kids get to take home a paper conductor's hat and the food offered is fresh and varied. The Purple Cow restaurant is also a great place to dine with kids in Midtown. Not only do they offer kid-pleasing menu items like PB&J, corn dogs, and even the Elvis Special, but they also serve up purple milkshakes that are bound to be a big hit with anyone in your group.
