Located in the charming town of Silverton, Christmas in the Garden is a traditional European-style outdoor market with 25 artisans offering goods from wooden huts, food and German gluhwein to warm your belly, and cozy fire pits. Portland Bazaar

Started in 2011, this holiday bazaar brings out all the best skills of Portland’s finest makers and artisans. Shop for Woodblock Chocolate, local artist prints, kids’ tees and toys, vintage goods, and more! Food carts will be on hand for treats. Friday night is a quieter affair that costs $15 to attend, and both Saturday and Sunday are free. Take advantage of your kid’s early wake-up time to arrive first thing– you’ll beat the crowds and have first pick of the goodies!

Crafty Wonderland Holiday Art + Craft Market

This giant craft market is truly a wonderland! Over 250 vendors descend upon the Convention Center every year to showcase their unique wares, and there’s even a whole aisle of kid vendors selling their own crafts. Jewelry from recycled bike tires, candles with natural scents, art made from old records, and goofy pillows in mushroom shapes. Portland Saturday Market and the Festival of the Last Minute

Saturday Market runs every week under the Burnside Bridge, but the best time to go is for their yearly Festival of the Last Minute, going on all the way up to Christmas Eve! There’s always those sneaky people on your list who you can’t find presents for–here’s your chance. One-of-a-kind handmade goods, exotic foods, local artists, and goofy gag gifts can all be found here. And the festival also offers holiday activities guaranteed to add to the fun. Santa will be visiting at his booth, and while you walk around you can enjoy the seasonal decorations and roving carolers! And if it’s just too chilly, stop by the warming stations for hot drinks and holiday treats.

Buckle up and take your holiday lights enjoyment to all new heights with a birds-eye view from 1,200 feet above the crowd. New this year, Chicago Helicopter Experience, a helicopter touring company with a heliport in Bridgeport, is offering guests sky-high views of Chicago’s magnificent light displays. The pilot gives a guided-tour of the lights at Lincoln Park Zoo, Navy Pier, Millennium Park and the Chicago skyline, which is breathtaking no matter the time of year but exponentially so during the holidays.

(5) Let the Joffrey Ballet Take Your Breath Away
The question isn’t if you are going to see the 28th annual, and final, presentation of Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker. It’s when. This epic smash replaces the traditional European setting with a 19th-century American home. It features the acclaimed Joffrey Ballet dancers, elegant costumes, an extravagant set by Oliver Smith, local children’s choruses, 118 young dancers and a giant Mother Ginger puppet by Kermit Love. They all weave together in a story of Clara and the mysterious Dr. Drosselmeyer, who embark on an incredible adventure.

The coolest way to watch the winking and blinking of holiday lights is by trolley. Hook up with Chicago Trolley Co. for its annual Holiday Lights Tour. The lightly narrated two-and-a-half-hour adventure shows the best of Chicago’s holiday lights and stops at Lincoln Park Zoo’s Zoolights show. Chestnuts and clementines and kale, oh my! There’s nothing quite like shrugging on your coat (or stepping into your rain boots) and heading outdoors to the winter markets for fresh veggies that will keep you healthy throughout the cold and flu season. The winter markets also offer up scavenger hunts and kids’ clubs to make shopping way more fun than the usual trip to the grocery store.

Winter Market at PSU

Big news: Saturday Market at PSU has gone year-round! For the first time, the winter market will be open in January and February on one block, expanding back to two blocks for its regular season in March. Families can enjoy the usual wealth of local vendors, and if you plan on spending a long time shopping, keep the kiddos happy by downloading a market scavenger hunt from their website to take with you! Please note that the winter market at Shemanski Park will not be open this year.

Beaverton Farmers Market

Washington County has just one winter farmers market, and is it ever a favorite! BFM is a magnet for westside families because of its stellar location in town. Park just once and you have access to the Beaverton City Library, the adjacent city park, and one of the largest farmers markets in the Portland area. Don’t forget to sign your littles up for the Market Sprouts Kids Club, where ages 4-12 can learn about eating healthfully and taking part in their local food system. You’ll have to wait until February for this winter market to open, but don’t worry– it’s well worth the wait and February will be here before you know it.

Location, location, location! You can’t go wrong taking the family to this market, situated on the parking lot of Rieke Elementary and Wilson High. Bring the whole clan, get your produce and other goods, then let the young ones blow off some steam on the playground, soccer field, or basketball court (or hey, join them and get your winter exercise). Families also love Hillsdale because of its close proximity to Hillsdale Shopping Center. Get your last few items at Food Front before heading home.
