Bounce N Play
There’s inflatables (huge ones) you can slide down, a ball pit, mini rides, arcade games, giant inflatable balls, climbing structures, mazes, a mini carousel, air hockey, you name it at Bounce N Play in Astoria. Parties here are totally private, for kids ages 1-13 and include Basic, Deluxe, Premium Private, Rock Climbing and Virtual Reality. Of course, they use the private play area and have add-on options such as character appearances, dancing, and balloons. Raising Astoria
At this Astoria play space and educational center known for their wonderful and whimsical classes for babies and children, various party options are available for your cuties. Customers must first contact the facility and staffers provide a tour and then they choose one of three packages: Basic–in which you bring your own food and decorations, Premium, in which they’ll take care of the food and decorations and Super Premium in which you get all the bells and whistles as well as age-appropriate entertainment, such as characters appearances or a jewelry or soap-making class. You get private use of the space for 3 hours; they charge only for the space rental, and not per child, there are no extra hidden fees for bringing your own food or balloons. Kids love the inflatable bounce house for 1 hour (or more), the foam blocks, the on-site play house, and of course, the variety of toys in the back room. Customers often tell the owners that hosting a party here is much like having a party in the privacy of their own homes but with more space, more toys for the kids and minus the clean up.

Sky Village by SHASTYE
SHASTYE, a cute art gallery and play space for kids owned by a local artist and mom, Shasta Molnar, is temporarily closed for renovations.  Currently,  their new location, Sky Village by SHASTYE, is the only one operating–and welcoming young partygoers. SHASTYE parties are unique because the staff throws amazing arts and crafts-related parties and Molnar can create any kind of experience that the client wishes. They recently hosted a high tea + hat making party with lots of pink hats, ribbons flowers and toile. If more traditional is more of your child’s cup of tea, other party experiences may include a FROZEN themed paint party , “Little Foodies” cooking party with Allergic to Salad or a simple but very fun DIY Playdough party with all kinds of colored rainbow past and pipe cleaners.

Kids are also gravitating to canvas paint parties and you don’t need any experience. Parties for kids here are 90 minutes long and include about 60 minutes of instructional painting of a prechosen image. Kids will paint anything from basic hearts and ice cream cones, to some works from Monet, Van Gogh, Warhol, you name it.  When kids paint, the teacher–a professional artist–usually incorporates some kind of art history lesson into the session. Parents can then use the remaining time to bring in any food/cake etc. Partygoers also have the option to extend their event by a half hour or hour, for a fee–just ask to speak with the team about it.

Queens County Farm Museum
Oftentimes we forget that NYC was once home to lots of farmland; the Queens County Farm Museum sits on what’s left of NYC’s largest portion of undisturbed farmland. On location is a greenhouse, historic farm buildings, livestock, farm vehicles and implements, planting fields, and orchard and an herb gardens. Parties here are so popular and niche that you must book one for your child as far in advance as possible–and weather can affect the activities your guests will participate in. At parties, kids take a hayride, go on a barnyard tour, see animals (the goats and sheep are very people-friendly!), and more. Parties are only held on weekends in the spring and summer and are 15 kids max. Parties are a great escape from the hustle and bustle of NYC and you’ll also see piglets, hens, lambs, and more. House Party: Birthday Entertainment That Comes to You!

—Rachel Sokol

There’s another new play space for families in Long Island City; a popular pocket of Queens just one stop away from Manhattan via the 7 train that’s attracting many young families. The all-new Mini Land Play is a cute indoor playground for kids 5 and under. We explored everything it has to offer and were quite pleased with our visit. Mini Land Play is neat, clean, cozy…and has Cookie Monster! (Huh? You’ll see…) Read on to learn more about this charming new hotspot.

Come Play in LIC!
Mini Land Play was founded by Long Island City mom Shu Yeh; she wanted a local, indoor place for her daughters to run around during inclement weather, and decided her area needed an indoor playground.

She lucked out and found a 3,000 sq ft space in a newly renovated building just off a main street. Shu’s older child came up with the name because one day she blocked an area for herself at an outdoor park and called it, “Mini Land.” (Also named due to the fact it’s an indoor space for “mini” people–kids–ages 0-5.)

Originally from Taiwan, Yeh also lived in Japan for many years; thus, she designed Mini Land Play around similar venues she had seen in Asia. At Mini Land, the inside colors are pastel shades of mostly blues, greens, and yellows, and it doesn’t feel overwhelming at all when you first walk in. Strollers are parked in the main entrance, and shoes are stored in cubbies. (Naturally, it’s sock-only inside the play area.) Really, this play space is best described as “whimsical.”

Moveable machines
There are 4 large, extremely soft, moving structures in the front part of the venue; three to the left of the open loft; and one to the right. They’re very padded and something we’ve never seen before at any NYC play area. We’ll do our best to describe them–you have to see them for yourself to best  understand.

The first rotating structure is a white padded circle that spins; and in the center is a colorful tower. It reminded me of one of those Sit-N-Spin toys from the 80s, but much larger and softer, and you don’t move it yourself.

The second structure has soft balls hanging off of (cushioned) poles that move around, so you can hug one of these poles as the structure itself slowly turns, or you can crawl around the ball poles. Again, it’s all very soft and padded.

The third moveable structure is a dolphin carousel, super plush. Kids ride one of three colorful dolphins in a circle. Nothing moves too fast, so kids won’t feel overwhelmed or scared.

To the left of the dolphin structure is a see-saw (remember those?!) boat that can hold about 4 people; two adults; two kids; and it slowly rocks back and forth. This is pretty much the only moveable structure that adults are allowed on, although I sat on the first structure for a few seconds to help my daughter climb on it.

Climbing area…and more
In the back, behind the dolphins, is a large climbing structure which has, “everything but the kitchen sink,” as the expression goes. This structure has mazes kids can climb through, a little swing, a trampoline on Tier 2…and next to the trampoline…a room where balloons of brilliant colors blow all around. This was, hands-down, my 4-year-old’s favorite part of the play space.

In the very back of Mini Land, right next to the area with the cool balloons, is a clear “bubble slide” that is quite sturdy, and looks like it’s made of plastic. It reminded me of those inflatable chairs dorm rooms had in the 90s, but quadruple the size.

Have a Ball (Pit)
At the bottom of the whole climbing structure is a large, wide ball pit, only a few inches high, with an apparatus that blows ball pit balls into the air. There are also smaller, traditional slides that carry you right into the ball pit. As indicated by a sign next to the ball pit, the balls are cleaned frequently; cleanliness at Mini Play Land is of utmost importance, for obvious reasons.

Have a Bash
At Mini Land, there’s a private party room located in the basement, and it should be ready this summer or fall, as it’s currently under construction. Yeh says before the party room finishes, Mini Land Play is open for Private Party/Event booking, and minimum booking for 2 hours is $500/hour for the entire 1st Floor play area. They’ll shut down the venue from public for private event use only.

For parties, Mini Land will not provide food/ drinks, so guests must bring their own. Also, Mini Land does NOT sell food or drinks, but thankfully there are some yummy restaurants nearby, such as Bareburger, Slice, Dorian’s Cafe, and Casa Enrique, right next door.

Visitors are encouraged to check out Mini Land’s social media page to learn about special events; recently Cookie Monster stopped by the place and even went down the clear slide with some kids.

At press time, nothing has been set in stone, but “guests,” such as Cookie Monster, Elmo, and Peppa Pig will stop by Mini Land hopefully once a week, probably on Thursdays. Again, check the social media pages for more info on special guests, events, and closures.

Pricing and times
All play is drop-in, so come on by and play whenever the mood strikes. Mini Land Play‘s hours are 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. daily, unless there’s a private party. These are the current fees: $12 weekdays – unlimited play whole day (1 Adult + 1 Child); $15 weekends & Holidays – 2 Hours limited play (1 Adult + 1 Child), $5 / Extra Child, $2 / Extra Adult. There’s also a “Fun Ticket Package,” option: $10/ticket with minimum 10 tickets of purchase. (Six months valid time starting the purchased date of ticket.) Kids 5 months and younger are free.

Mini Land Play is a happy play space for local kids, and proves that once again, while Manhattan may be…well…Manhattan, Queens is starting to rival the Big Apple when it comes to kiddie entertainment.

Worth a Trip!
It’s a play space definitely worth checking out, even if you are coming from Manhattan or Long Island, and a great addition to Queens, especially on a rainy day or after pre-K or Kindergarten. Even neighbor Playday, a mecca for super creative arts classes, is fond of Mini Land–they told us so!

As kids frolic, familiar music, such as Disney songs, play, and it’s not too loud. And, you get a balloon when you leave!

For those with younger kids, there’s a little nook on-site with two changing tables; as well as a large bathroom. Enjoy your visit, and don’t forget your socks!

Please note: Mini Land is not a drop-off venue; all kids must be accompanied by an adult.

Royally Good: Queens’ Best Indoor Play Spaces

17 Reasons Why Queens is Great for Kids

You may have heard there’s a new axe-throwing joint in town. So did we. And they told us kids as young as seven can try their hand at it. That’s a proposition that’s too hard to resist, so we wrangled up some kids to check out the appropriately-named, Kick Axe.

Get Your Axe in There!
Located on what is clearly becoming an “xtreme sports” alley of sorts in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn (the block is also home to Homage skateboard shop and facility, Brooklyn Boulders, Brooklyn Fnecing, and a cross fit gym) Kick Axe obviously fits right in.

photo: Kick Axe

Come in From the Cold and Chill
We were admittedly slightly terrified of the prospect of throwing axes around, but the giant blue bull that greets visitors outside, and a downright cozy interior with a ski chalet vibe make us feel right at home.

In addition to  a gas fireplace, lots of plaid and furry throws, Kick Axe provides plenty of opportunities for good old fashioned fun in the form of games ranging from Jenga to Connect Four to vintage Operation and more.

photo: Kick Axe

The Ranges
Beyond the cozy lounging areas lie the axe-throwing ranges, roomy, “pens” fenced off on three sides with a wood target on the wall, a la darts.

Safety First!
Of course, the first thing you do upon entering is sign a waiver, because axes. You can do that in advance if you like.
Our party included five adults, an 11 year-old, a seven year-old, and an eight-and-a-half year old.

Kick Axe knows that most people visitng the place think the idea is at least a little bit crazy, and so each party has its own “Axepert” on hand to not only set some ground rules, teach the basics of axe-throwing, and calm and nerves.

Before you begin, everyone gets some one-on-one instruction and some trial throws.

Throwing Down
The basic game itself, is pretty standard. (Presumably there are more intricate axe games, but we weren’t ready for that.) Your group (maximum players per range is eight) is assembled into two teams, who then face off in pairs at the range, with only one person throwing at a time. Everyone puts on a name tag with their real or axe-throwing moniker.

Each ring on the target has a point value, and the bullseye is of course the ideal spot to hit. We played ’til 30 in one round, and then played one more. The total time for play is an hour and a half.

Is it Hard? Is it Fun?
It turns out that axe-throwing is not as hard as you would think, although it can take a while to get the hang of it. That said, when axe meets wood it’s very satisfying, and once you’ve done that, you want to do it again. By the time we were done, even the seven-year-old with us was sinking the blade in and hitting the bull’s eye.

(Kids can also stand closer to the target for increased chances of success, and for really little ones, the lounge now has rubber axes for kids to throw, scoring based on where they hit the target and bounce off. One-handed throwing is also allowed, which can make things easier.)

How Much Does it Cost to Do This Crazy Thing?
If you and the family want to drop by for some axe-throwing fun, it’s $35 per person plus tax. Book online in advance. if you want a private range, request one, but you may end up playing with strangers depending on how busy things are. (Either way you’ll have fun.)

Sound like a great idea for a party? (Personally, we want to see a badass group of eight-year-old girls do this.) Semi-private party rates start at $525 for two ranges and 24 people. That’s the discount rate offered Mon.-Thurs.; it’s $700 Fri.-Sun.

Kick Axe has basic drinks for sale (soda, water, seltzer, and yes, they do sell beer but eject anyone who’s had too much) and very basic food. However, you’re free to bring in pizza and cake (no ice cream cake) or whatever your little axe-throwers desire.

The Skate Party
Maybe the days of wearing wrist bands and tube socks while demonstrating your superior Shoot the Duck skills have gone to pass, but skate parties are here to stay! Check out Pattison’s West in Federal Way or Skate Tiffany‘s in Puyallup where partygoers get to skate to live DJ music and enjoy games, then roll on into the party room for pizza and drinks. Both venues have party attendants to handle the set-up and clean-up, so you can relax and have fun. Plan a Glow Party at either center and the celebration suite is transformed into a luminescent wonderland, plus everyone gets their own glow to wear.

The Bounce House Party
We’ve tracked it and found bounce house spots are almost as numerous as drive-thru latte stands in the South Sound (maybe there’s a relationship there), and all offer some amazing party experiences for high energy kids. Check out Pump it Up’s private party events that include the use of two different bounce rooms plus a private party room. They also offer some amazing themes for your big bash like glow, bubble or superhero parties that can be added on for an extra fee. Bounce it Up 360 in Kent and Black Diamond both offer a less expensive open play party option in addition to private events.

At Super Jump Party Zone of South Hill or Auburn their open jump party offers tons of run around room in a huge play area filled with super inflatables, plus a private party room. Not a bounce house, but kids can still get their jump on at Federal Way’s Trampoline Nation. Parties include two hours of big air time, plus two pizzas and water all around. Bounce E House of Tacoma hosts private shindigs where outside food and drinks are allowed for no extra fee, plus they offer a visit from one of three special characters of your choice. Lastly, Jumpin’ Jack & Jill of Sumner has private party events as well as outside bounce house rentals available for your big extravaganza. Party packages start at $125 and go up to $400 plus add-ons.

Where is your favorite South Sound birthday party spot? Tell us in the Comments below!

— Rachael Brandon

What’s that? You say Spring Break is still weeks away and you can’t possibly play another riveting game of Memory or imitate farm animal sounds for one more second? Strap your cherubs into the back seat and make the drive out to Ashburn, Va. to spend a few hours at The Zone—NoVa’s answer to Dave & Buster’s (for adults and kids).

The Space
Located on the ground level of a mixed-use building (BLVD-Loudoun Station apartments tower above), The Zone boasts 17,500 square feet of entertainment and dining space, including five private party suites that can be reserved for birthdays, showers and holiday shindigs. Both the bar and restaurant are equipped with TVs that can, upon request, connect to one of the many video cameras on site so you can watch your older daredevils give the bowling bumpers a run for their money while you sneak in a plate of fries.

The Fun
The Zone bills itself as “Limitless Fun for Everyone” and it certainly delivers: cosmic bowling, laser tag in a Mayan jungle, and 37 blinking, buzzing arcade games mean you may be dizzy upon exit, but your kids will surely never complain that they’re understimulated.

The Food
Should anyone get the munchies after piloting the flight simulator or outscoring everyone in a game of NBA Hoops, grab a snack or a full meal in the restaurant—or, weather permitting, on the patio snuggled up to one of the many standing heaters. While there’s plenty of the typical arcade fare (burgers, wings, and French fries), you can also order lime ceviche, chicken tikka skewers, or one of The Zone’s seven artisan pizzas. Vegetarians also have plenty of options, including a hummus sandwich and a spattering of drool-inducing salads.

And Another Thing…
Be sure to check their online calendar for daily specials, such as a “free” burger (with the purchase of a $10 Game Card), half-price bottles of wine, and half-price arcade games). Red Tricycle parents who mention promo code “XY43100” (expires September 1, 2015) at the welcome counter will receive one free game of laser tag (a $9 value).  Also be sure to have Kenny Loggins primed and ready to go on your car stereo for the ride home, because your lil’ tykes will be too tired to make fun of your front-seat dance party.

Put the Art Back in Party: 8 Spots for Creative Birthdays

Rain shmain! Portland parents know that the birthday party must go on amidst the wet weather. Luckily, we have a wealth of crazy-fun indoor party opps for the guests of honor to choose from. No matter what the weather’s like outside, the following spots will give your kiddos a special fete they won’t soon forget. Click through our album to see them all.

Rose City Futsal

Open for just over a year, this indoor sports playground is the place for young Timbers and Thorns-in-training to get their kicks on. Slightly different than soccer (*ahem*... football, that is), futsal is a fast-paced game of lively teamwork, focusing on ball control and quick passing. Birthday parties feature 60 minutes of court time (equipment included!) and a private party for another 45 minutes. You bring the cake or cupcakes, then round out your refreshments by choosing from the menu items at Clive's Public House, the on-site pub that will make the adults want to return for their own birthday celebrations.
