As our children continue to grow up in an ever-changing world, we can all do with a wider selection of inclusive books. That’s where Rebel Girls author, Francesca Cavallo, comes in.
Cavallo is embarking on another journey to bring inclusive stories to young readers with a new series of four illustrated books, Paralympians. The unique picture books will tell the stories of Paralympic champions Russian-American wheelchair racer Tatyana McFadden, Afro-French sprinter and long jumper Jean-Baptiste Alaize, Iranian archer Zahra Nemati and Italian fencer Beatrice Vio.
But in order to make these stories come to life, Cavallo and her new children’s media company, Undercats, needs your help. The books are currently on Kickstarter where they are garnering support to meet their goal and be published.
One of the illustrators for the series, Valentine Toro, shares “With this book series, we want to start creating a blueprint for the representation of people with disabilities in children’s books.”

It’s been a year and then some for all of us living through the COVID-19 epidemic. From masking up and washing our hands to stay-at-home orders and travel restrictions, we are a world in constant response to the pandemic. Through it all, we’ve been parenting our kids, balancing distance learning, and lockdown with the need for our kids to understand, grow, and play.
Unfortunately, the past year, and the past few weeks, in particular, have revealed an alarmingly high rise in racism toward Asian Americans and people of Asian descent. Misinformation surrounding the virus, its origins, and public statements from high-ranking officials have fueled this fire. One woman with a mission is trying to change that.

In the story, we learn about Dr. Li, who risked being arrested to spread accurate information about the high-rate of transmission with COVID-19. Although he worked hard to identify and protect people, he was threatened, as were the doctors and health-care professionals who supported him and tried to pass on the information about how to protect yourself from the spread of the virus.
Meanwhile, we meet seven-year-old May who learns about Dr. Li’s work, and his death from the virus and feels afraid. Together, with her mom’s help, they set out to educate themselves about the Coronavirus. The book itself shares practical facts, beautiful images, and reassures children with researched information.
The book itself offers a Chinese hero for children to remember, and empowers kids with knowledge.

Now, the Rebel Girls have teamed up with global learning platform Kahoot! for a very special series of online, educational games designed to teach and empower children everywhere. Read on to get the scoop.
Using digital games on the Kahoot! platform, Rebel Girls will shine a light on Women’s history like never before. Each gaming experience will be curated and released in honor of Black History Month and Women’s History Month. Games will be dedicated to learning more about phenomenal Black women, with quizzes like “Extraordinary Women Throughout Black History” and lessons like “Build a Business Like Madam CJ Walker,” allowing kids to learn in an immersive way.
“Too often, children’s books and education do not adequately recognize or celebrate women’s accomplishments,” said Rebel Girls Head of Digital Content, Lilly Workneh. “Rebel Girls is filling the gap and excited to partner with Kahoot! to bring these stories to life in delightful and fun ways through our new slate of online games.”
Other games will highlight Rebel Girls’ four key categories: leaders, champions, creators, and inventors. Kids can learn a diverse range of women and will be tested on history and the legends who shaped it.

Complete with a forward by CaShawn Thompson, who is credited as the first person to introduce the concept of “Black Girls Are Magic” via Twitter in 2013. A bit different than the other podcasts we've highlighted, but one that's certainly worthy of being on the list is The High Conflict Co-Parenting podcast. Hosted by Brook Olsen, a Certified Parenting Educator with the International Network for Children and Families, a Certified Divorce Mediator, Divorce Coach, and author of The Black Hole of High Conflict, this San Diego based podcast addresses co-parenting when circumstances are difficult. He and his guests show that you can't change your ex partner, but you can change the environment and offer your child health and happiness. Listen and learn principles, tools and techniques available in order to create peace in high conflict co-parenting relationships.

This cheerful new book (released in November 2020) introduces readers to deafness and hearing aids in a totally kid-friendly way: Little Bear is having trouble hearing, but doesn't understand what is happening. He just keeps hearing funny phrases, like "Can bears ski?" The author, Raymond Antrobus was diagnosed with deafness at age seven and the illustrator, Polly Dunbar, became hard of hearing in her '20s. The result is a lesson in empathy that aims to destigmatize deafness and an excellent addition to any library, especially a classroom one.
Written by Smiriti Prasadam-Halls with luscious illustrations by David Litchfield, perhaps the author and the publisher both had a premonition about just how important this book would be in 2020. The message is clear, as Dolly Parton will tell you, "If you want rainbows, you gotta' put up with the rain." This beautiful book rhymes its way through a magical world that is full of thunder and clouds and kindness and clarity. This is a great bedtime book, too and though its written for ages 3-7, older kids will get some comfort from it at night as a girl and her fox companion move away from a sorrowful past, through challenges, and into a new tomorrow. Sounds about right, no?
Mexican-artist and author-illustrator Flavia Z. Drago's stunning debut picture book full of bright illustrations that bring to mind gorgeous papel picado paper-cuts as we adventure through Gustavo's world. Gustavo doesn't like to talk much and has trouble making friends, but soon he learns his other gifts are something the world (and his friends) need.
There are a lot of tough times for kids in life, and moving away or losing a friend to a move can be really hard at any age. This beautiful book by Newbery medalist Meg Medina, illustrated by Sonia Sanchez, helps children process more of those big feelings and remember that friendship is in our hearts. This is also a helpful book during these times when playdates are few and far between.

This incredibly compelling book written by Thomas Harding and illustrated by Britta Teckentrup tells "The True Story of a House, Its History, and the Four Families Who Made It Home" and follows the history of a house taken from a family by the Nazis. Though it could end there, the author continues to tell the story of the new families who came to live in the walls and make it a happy home over the years. A deeply moving reminder of the sorrow of loss and the hope of new beginnings.
