A brand new school year is the perfect time for little ones to try on a fresh new ‘do—and trim down locks you’ve let get a little unruly over the summer. To make the whole haircutting experience as stress-free as possible and even fun, we’ve rounded up LA’s best kid-friendly salons. Not only will they help your tots look totally on fleek (is that still a thing?), but the stylists at these spots are also pros at putting kids at ease. And, hey, if all else fails, there’s the free balloons!

Bubble Cuts

Stephanie A. via Yelp

Designed with a whimsical vintage flair, Bubble Cuts’ squeaky clean and inviting atmosphere transports customers back to a simpler time, instantly putting kiddos (and their nervous Nellie parents) at ease. Tots sit inside special fire engines, cop cars, and Cali cool convertibles while getting their hair cut to perfection. Cartoons play on nearby TVs – keeping the squirmiest toddlers occupado while they’re in the chair. Stylists are super friendly and pride themselves in staying up to date on current trends, styles and beauty products for wee ones. (And they give such cool cuts that we know more than one mom who made the switch to also getting her haircut here!)

With stylists who can do just about anything from braids and blowouts to chlorine removal and cuts that ooze LA cool, your little one will be in fantastic hands. And the fact that they’re friendly as all get out, doesn’t hurt either. Tots (and parents) will geek out over old school video games while you wait and can choose from a wide variety of the latest kid-friendly hair products on your way out the door.

The Yellow Balloon

Max R. via Yelp

If there’s one salon that’s synonymous with childhood in LA, it’s The Yellow Balloon. Many Angeleno parents who grew up getting their hair cut at this cheery shop now take in their own kiddos for a little snippety-snip. Pinball machines, video games, balloons, and Disney flicks playing on TV make tots feel more like they’ve entered wonderland than a neighborhood hair shop. But most importantly, your babe’s hair is in great hands. From timid first-timers to tikes with ants in their pants, stylists have tons of experience working with all types of kiddos, including those with special needs. And there isn’t any hair they can’t handle. So bring on your cornrows, fades, extensions or a tired do that just needs a refresh – they’ve got you covered.

Their salon even features an app to easily book appointments and receive special offers. Currently, there are two LA locations with another shop opening soon in Beverly Hills.

6 Hair Salons Where Kids Can Get a New ‘Do, Chop, Chop!

5 Urban Playdates & Lunch Dates With Your Preschooler

There’s no shortage of magic coming to Disney theme parks this year. While we wait with bated breath for Galaxy’s Edge to open its doors, there is plenty more to be excited about when visiting the selection of parks at Walt Disney World. Keep scrolling to see all the attractions, shows and eateries you won’t want to miss.

Disney Skyliner

Disney Parks

If you've been missing the Disneyland Skyway to Tomorrowland, you'll be elated to find that WDW will be opening The Disney Skyliner in the fall of this year. The gondola-styled attraction will connect Epcot and Disney's Hollywood Studios with more than six miles of cable! The ride includes 22 gondolas that rise from 15 to 60 feet off the ground in adorable character designs and can last from five to 15 minutes depending on when riders decide to disembark. Unlike the bucket-style of Disneyland, the new gondolas will have two wooden benches that can accommodate up to 10 guests.

Rivers of Light

WDW News

Disney's Animal Kingdom is about to get lit up with its new Rivers of Light show, a nighttime extravaganza heavy on symbolism and storytelling. Told with a mix of water, fire, nature and light, the originally-scored shore will be performed on select nights and is bound to be a showstopper!

Beauty & The Beast Themed Bar

Disney Parks

Taking over the old Mizner’s Lounge and Commander Porter’s at the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, the new Beauty and the Beast-themed bar will have four unique spaces inspired by your fave film! The amazing gold chandelier is the main show stopper, pairing the beauty of Belle's gown and of course, the rose. No word yet on the menu, drinks or opening day so stay tuned so you can be their guest!

New Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique Location

Walt Disney World

The Grand Floridian is getting another update in the form of a new location for the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. The hotspot will take over the current Ivy Trellis Salon and be Walt Disney World's third location. Because of its popularity, the Magic Kingdom's boutique is also getting an upgrade next spring which will add more chairs and a magic mirror so even more littles can enjoy a magical transformation.

Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway

WDW News

While Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway isn't set to open until Spring of 2020, we are still excited for the attraction that gives riders a 3-D experience––no glasses needed. The new ride, which replaced the Great Movie Ride, follows an original story involving Goofy taking control, a new theme song and state-of-the-art technology. California visitors can also expect this attraction to hit the Disneyland Resort sometime in 2022.

Disney World’s New Pass Gets You into the Parks for Just $85 a Day

Every Magical New Experience Coming to Walt Disney World in 2019—So Book Now

Disney Parks Just Made It Easier to Find & Book Cheaper Disney World Vacations

Is that you?  Are you feeling as if you should have made New Year’s resolutions, but haven’t yet because you know you can’t possibly fit one more thing into your life?  You know you need time for work in the workplace and at home, time for your family, time for spiritual renewal, time for giving back to society, time for personal growth, time for exercise and a bit of downtime for yourself. And there are only 24 hours in a day. And you need to sleep.

There seem to be more and more studies on the short-term and long-term dangers associated with sleep deprivation. It’s not surprising that you feel overwhelmed. Who has time to keep  or even to make, New Year’s resolutions?

As I reflected on the “no time” for anything more problem, I thought of the women I knew who had really impressed me with how well they’d managed the times in life that were busiest. I realized two things they all did that you might consider when envisioning the coming year. These amazing women had determined what they were doing that others could do instead and they combined the items in their must do list, finding activities that helped meet multiple demands on their time.

What others might do for you is interesting to ponder. If your parents or in-laws are nearby, ask them how they might like to help so they feel useful, not used.  Hire out mundane tasks to the extent you can afford to do this. Work with your spouse or partner or older children to divide up responsibility for some of the tasks.

I went to graduate school with a working mom whose family had divided dinner preparation responsibilities and dad and each of the children planned for and prepared dinner one night each week, mom still cooked two nights, they had take-in one night and went out one night. The shopping list was prepared for the week and each person contributed requirements, shopping was done online and the food was delivered to the home. This approach worked very well for them and they each enjoyed their weekly night of hosting and the other nights when they were served.

Work with your friends to see how you can help each other. Many busy moms have realized that they don’t need to go to every practice event so take turns driving  and also take turns hosting overnights and play time. I’m sure you can think of more things you are currently doing that others might help you do with mutual benefits.

It can also be rewarding to think about activities that enable you to meet multiple demands on your time. Perhaps the most interesting is to think about how time with family members can also be time when you are learning  or doing household tasks  or exercising  or giving back to society or even enjoying personal down time. In the last category for example, I notice when I have manicures that often there are little girls and boys there with their moms loving every second of having their nails painted green  or having sparkles or pictures placed on their tiny finger nails  and at least in my local salon, the cost is minimal.

The trip to the manicurist probably also included some one-on-one time in the car with mom. I recall doing meal clean-up with my mom and sister. My sister and I thought it strange that our mom participated, but it made our job easier and faster, so we didn’t question her decision. Many years later I asked my mom why she had been part of the clean-up team. She expressed surprise that I hadn’t realized it was one of her favorite times. She noted that my sister and I would talk non-stop and it kept her aware of much more that was going on in our worlds than she would have known otherwise.

Make your resolutions for the year be to share the workload (note that I didn’t recommend delegating or offloading the work) and to think of activities that might help you address multiple priorities simultaneously.  Discussions on how to accomplish these resolutions might even be fun.

A few summers ago when I was at my hair salon getting a haircut, I witnessed the most helicopter mom moment ever, and since I wasn’t up to my blow dry yet, I got to hear every cringe worthy second. I watched a mother accompany her soon-to-be-college freshman son to the beauty salon, go with him to the stylist’s chair, and then proceed to tell the stylist how her son wanted his haircut.

He was leaving for college, and he couldn’t manage a haircut on his own. Oh my.

Having taken a few kids to college myself, I knew she was in for a major shock on college move in day—not a shock like his roommate was heavily tattooed, or that the bathroom down the hall was coed—bigger than that.

The shock will be that no one at Freshman College Orientation will want to talk to her, the mom.

When students arrive at college orientation, the moms (and their carefully organized folders of very important information for moving your child into college) are invisible to the orientation staff; they only have eyes and ears for the freshman student. The college staff doesn’t care that you are standing there smiling and organized and ready to answer all the questions you have been answering for the last 18 years. Name, social security number, dorm room, you name it, they don’t want to hear it from you. They want to hear it from the student, and rightly so.

Will you be ready to step back and allow your child to speak? More importantly, will your child be ready? Will they be ready to look a stranger in the eye and speak up?

They will be—if we are purposeful about encouraging them to speak for themselves as they grow up. If we don’t, we run the risk of them not knowing how to do it when they are old enough to leave home.

Below are a few ideas for situations when kids could speak for the themselves and gain the experience they need to grow into self-sufficient and self-assured young people.

Let’s allow our kids to arrive at college orientation confident young adults able to speak for themselves.

  1. Have your child call their grandparents to tell them about their week.
  2. When your family orders takeout, have your child call in the order.
  3. When you go to the doctor’s office, give your child the insurance card and then take a seat in the waiting room. Or stay home and let them navigate the whole process.
  4. When your son turns 18, he is required to register with Selective Service. He should fill out that paperwork himself.
  5. At 18, they can sign their own school permission slips. Allow them to do it.
  6. Have them pay the bill and leave the tip when your family eats out.
  7. At family gatherings, have them sit with a distant relative and have an actual conversation.
  8. Make them be the one to tell the dentist that they never floss.
  9. Let them speak to their hair stylist about their own hair!

I found that practicing these scenarios ahead of time helped when my kids seemed anxious. I have been the one doing all the talking since they were born, and while they picked up a few things from my example; practice helps. So, go ahead and do some role plays before they check in at the doctor, or pay the restaurant bill, or have that conversation with the distant relative.

You will be glad you did on college move-in day, when your child arrives poised and confident, and no one cares that you are there… ready to sign them up for college the same way you remember signing them up for kindergarten—which seems like it was just yesterday.

Getting your kids excited about a hair cut is almost as tough as getting them excited about a trip to the dentist. But thanks to the newly opened Snip-its Kids Salon at Crossroads Bellevue, stylists are not only trained in the latest kids’ hair trends, but also how to work with young, nervous clientele—making each visit to the salon a fun and memorable one. If your crew is in need of cut, trim or style, read on for the inside scoop on this kid-centric salon that is making kids feel special and pampered with every visit.

The Important Details
Snip-its is conveniently located near the center of Bellevue Crossroads Shopping Center (near the food court and stage area) and offers a bright, exciting space for kids to get their hair cut, trimmed or styled. Focused on creating “magical experiences for kids and parents,” Snip-its employs specially trained stylists who love kids and it shows. Stylists are also certified by Autism Speaks to help make the whole hair-cutting experience a positive one for all.

About the Owner
Owner Duc Quan wants to make sure this often seen “task” of getting a hair cut is turned into something fun for kids along with an educational experience. That’s why he provides information to kids and parents about correct kids hygiene and age appropriate products. With a 4 1/2-year-old daughter himself, Quan knows a thing or two about kids. And his passion for good products for kids is seen on his shelves. The salon offers Snip-its brand shampoos, conditioners and styling products, plus a 100% vegan brand, Original Sprout and perennial mom-favorite, Moroccanoil.

Walk-ins Encouraged
Unlike many other kids’ hair salons, Snip-its is primarily walk-in only—great for when you don’t want to plan weeks in advance (who can?) or when your little monkey is suddenly drowning in hair. And while walk-in service can sometimes be tricky, Snip-its offers up to four stylists at any given time, activities in the waiting area and the food court and mall right next door, so wait times (generally no more than 5 minutes) go by in a blink. Psst! Bellevue Crossroads is full of ride-on mechanical toys to entertain tykes (think two-minute rides on an elephant or train for $.25), as well as kid faves like WiggleWorks kids, an awesome candy store and Creatively Yours, a ceramic studio that offers paint-it-yourself ceramics.

Perks That Come with Each Service
At the beginning of each appointment, haircut recipients receive a key-card-like pass to hold during their service. After their appointment (which can include a haircut, a shampoo & cut, added styling or just a simple bang trim), kids drop their passes into a special slot on a Magic Box to earn a cool prize. Computer tablets are also available during haircuts for pint-sized entertainment and fun accouterments are available as well (think sparkles, washable hair color or hair tinsel which is like a weave that stays in for a considerably long time). Higher-end hair accessories and toys are also available for sale.

Low-Sensory Appointments
If your little monkey needs a bit more of a relaxed or quiet environment or if he or she is feeling tentative about the hair-cutting process, Snip-its is more than accommodating. They offer specifically scheduled appointments at quiet times during the day and when the sounds and lights can be dimmed for your appointment.

More Than Hair
If your mini fashionista is into more than just amazing hair cuts, Snip-its also offers mini manis and pedis, ear-piercing, facials and even parties! Choose Glamour, Hollywood, Spa or Rock Star and let your little one get duded up with his or her pals in the nearby Community Room. After the glam treatment, partygoers get to walk the red carpet, catwalk or prance on stage in all their fabulousness.

Mark Your Calendars for the Grand Opening Party!
Everyone is invited to come and check out the salon at the official Grand Opening Party on Saturday, March 25 at 2 p.m. Eric Haines (a Cirque du Soleil entertainer!) will be on-hand to wow the crowds with a variety of amazing feats (think stilts, unicycle and other silly fun). Plus, face painting will be offered, along with music, a free spin of the prize wheel (you could win a 6-pack of hair cuts!) and more.

Good to Know
This is the first franchise location of Snip-its in the Pacific NW, but Quan has his sights set on opening four more locations in areas such as Bothell, Bellevue, Issaquah, Lynnwood and Greenwood. Keep an eye on their website for more Snip-its fun for everyone!

Sit Still Kids
This spa and salon was created by a Portland mom who understands kids. The fun environment will capture your kids’ attention and they offer a full suite of salon services for littles including several manicure and pedicure options.

Sit Still’s mini-manis cost $15 and their mini-pedicures cost $20. Both include soaking, filing and polish. While Sit Still is open to kids of all ages, they advise that parents should only treat their little ones to these services if they can “sit still” long enough for the nail polish to dry! That said, they recommend mani/pedis for kids age 3 and up. The nail technicians are all patient, and gentle and they use safe and sanitary equipment and tools.

In addition to manis and pedis, Sit Still Kids offers hair cuts and ear piercings as well.
