Trader Joe's products summer cookout

Trader Joe’s

It has BBQ in the name, therefore this is a must for your cookout! While we love the crunchy cabbage and kale that gives this salad a chilly feel, the cornbread croutons and black pepper Toscano cheese really take the idea of a salad served on a hot day from drab to fab.

Sesame Teriyaki Beef Skirt Steak

Most people think of sizzling meat when they picture a BBQ and that’s why this skirt steak is a natural choice. The pre-marinaded beef is USDA Choice Angus and is versatile enough to be cooked on the grill or stir-fried in an air-conditioned kitchen on a hot day.

Portabella Burger

Tinybeans

Pollo Asado

Tinybeans

Whether you enjoy this pollo asado in tacos, burritos, or a la carte, it’s a natural choice for a cookout. Thanks to the marinade of citrus juices, paprika, black pepper, crushed red pepper, cayenne, and garlic you don’t have to think ahead of time to flavor your meat, which means more time just enjoying your guests.

Brioche Buns

Just because you’re hosting a backyard BBQ doesn’t mean you have to settle for sub-par buns. We love both the Brioche hot dog and burger buns that bring a little sweet and salty to your gathering. Plus, they’re great for picky eaters who will probably only eat the bun anyways!

Any Trader Joe’s Corn Product

Watermelon & Peach Macarons

We can’t say anything but “Oui!” to these perfect pastel macarons. Found in the freezer aisle, they are a great way to add just a little sweetness to your cookout and, dare we say it, would pair perfectly with an adult sparkling wine at the end of a long, hot day.

These favorite kid dishes are getting a glow-up

We don’t know your kid, but if yours is anything like ours, they can sniff out a piece of kale hiding in a quesadilla faster than you can pop a straw in a juice box. In other words, getting them to eat healthy stuff isn’t always so easy. But here’s our tip. Don’t be sneaky about it. Instead, be creative and work with what you’ve got. Check out our tried-and-true ways to get your kids to eat healthier—without all of the disguises—because Mama didn’t raise no fool.

Chicken Nuggets

Is there anything that’s been reinvented more than the chicken nugget? We don’t think so. From alphabet shapes to dinosaurs, spicy to sweet, chicken nuggets come in every shape and size. The bad news? They’re often packed with preservatives and sodium. Instead of buying them in bulk, give this panko chicken recipe a go—it’s such an easy healthy food swap. Easy to make in batches, the panko holds its crunch and you can even crisp it up in an air fryer in no time, if you’re eating it throughout the week.

Macaroni & Cheese

Doesn’t every kid love mac & cheese? Who can blame them? And secretly, who doesn’t take a bite out of their leftovers before loading dishwasher? For a healthier riff on mac & cheese, try making a pot of green mac and cheese with spinach, peas and broccoli. The bright color and cheesy, creamy texture rings all the right bells.

Buttered Noodles

What is it about buttered noodles that kids love so much? Oh. Right. There’s butter, and then there are noodles. So it’s pretty perfect on the palate but falls short in nutritive strength. So, we have two options here. Serve it with protein-enriched or whole-grain pasta, or just serve it less frequently (but don’t mess with a masterpiece). We all need a reason to live, right?

Grilled Cheese

Dang it. We like these, too. But for the sake of being “good parents,” let’s explore options with the Grand Dame of Kid Food: The Grilled Cheese. First, switch around your cooking method. Instead of bathing it in a skillet of butter, batch bake them on a sheet with a light mist of olive oil on the pan. Another option is to pack some nutrition into your bread choice. Pass on the white bread and see how sprouted grains pleases your kids, instead. Finally, you can pack it full of spinach, ham, or sliced tomato if you don’t have a purist waiting for lunch to be served. How’s that for healthy food swaps?

Quesadilla

Lentils are a great source of protein, which helps keep you full for longer. Since the cooked lentils are pureed and mixed with salsa, they taste like refried beans, and picky eaters will be none the wiser. Check out our recipe for Grilled Lentil Quesadillas for a healthier alternative to the classic.

Pizza

Anything you pick up or have delivered is going to come with a hefty health bill, when you add up all the salt (and frequently, sugar) found in pizza. But it’s so good. And so easy. Nonetheless, pizza made at home is not only fun, but also free from the hidden health hazards you’ll find in the delivery box. A prime reason to implement a healthy food swap here. Try making personal pizzas on a pita bread base, and let them choose toppings from an assortment of veggies and proteins. You can broil it for a quick fix, or try grilling it for another exciting twist.

Tacos

We take Taco Tuesday seriously, except sometimes it falls on a Wednesday or Thursday. But weekly tacos are a thing, so keeping the ingredients exciting is key to keeping the kiddos coming back for more. Instead of ground beef, cheese, lettuce and sour cream, try a vegetarian taco night with sauteed beans and mushrooms. home made guac (or hefty avocado slices), diced tomatoes and salsa. Or, go rogue with cheeseburger tacos. Brown turkey and diced onions for the filler, and let them top it with shredded lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mustard and cheese. Basically anything can be adapted to taco form, and we’re here for it. We bet your kids will be, too.

Spaghetti

Amp up your spaghetti game by sautéing shredded carrots and zucchini with garlic before dumping your favorite jar of pre-made sauce into the pan to simmer. For meat-lovers, brown some turkey sausage and add a dash of fennel to it to make it seem like Italian sausage. Noodles get an upgrade when you choose whole grain pasta or higher protein pasta, instead of the regular noodles. There are a million ways to add nutrition into spaghetti without sacrificing flavor, but be sure to check the back of your sauce jar—some brands are much worse than others about adding unneeded sugar to their sauce.

If your kids love pasta but you want to change up your dinnertime routine, try out this easy Baked Ziti. Make it ahead of time and bake it when needed. From the refrigerator, the dish usually needs an additional 15 minutes of cooking time.

Ingredients for Easy Baked Ziti:

1 pound dry ziti pasta
1 finely chopped onion
1 lb ground beef
2 (26 ounce) jars spaghetti sauce
8 slices of provolone cheese
1 1/2 cups sour cream
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Method:

1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add pasta, and cook for about 8-9 minutes; drain.

2. In a large skillet, brown onion and ground beef over medium heat. Add spaghetti sauce, heat through, then remove from heat.

3. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Coat a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking oil spray.

4. Layer as follows: 1/2 of the ziti, 1/2 of the sauce, Provolone cheese, sour cream, remaining ziti, remaining sauce, and mozzarella cheese. Top with grated Parmesan cheese.

5. Bake for 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the cheeses are melted. Cover with foil for the first 15-20 minutes of baking, then remove the foil so the cheese will melt and the top will brown.

Try these theme restaurants in Atlanta for an exciting dinner experience you may not expect

Dining with kids is an adventure. And one of the best ways to keep everyone happy and entertained when dining out is to hit up a out-of-the-box restaurant that practically guarantees a tabletop of happy plates (hint: here are some of our other favorite family restaurants tips). From brunch overlooking the world’s busiest airport to dinner inside a real train car—or perhaps pizza served by robots—we’ve got eight theme restaurants in Atlanta that are worth checking out. Find your favorite spots to make a memorable—in a good way—mealtime memory.

1. The S.O.S. Tiki Bar

This Victory Brands restaurant in Decatur is best to visit when the sun is down to catch "all the tiki glow." There are plenty of neon colors, tropical flowers, and bobbling hula dolls during the day, though, so you won't be disappointed.

Insider Tip: If they've been good and let you drink your cocktail out of a giant bird of paradise vase in peace, reward them with an order of Tempur-Oreos for dessert. They're deep-fried Oreos with Nutella or vegan chocolate sauce.

2. Selfie Museum

Glaze your Instagram with a visit to Atlanta’s weirdest museum that combines selfies (or perhaps family photos) with donuts. ‘Hole In The Wall’ is not a full-service restaurant, but you can nosh on delicious donuts and sip tasty drinks while snapping selfies at donut-themed selfie stations.

4. Trader Vic's

Nope, not Trader Joe's. This particular Trader takes diners to poy paradise, with Polynesian-inspired decor, cuisine, and on occasion, entertainment. It's the home of the "original" Mai-Tai, so definitely add that to your order. This particular location in the downtown Hilton has been in operation since 1976, and this tiki bar is definitely high on wow factor for kids and parents, alike.

5. Orient Express

Located on railroad tracks in an old train car, and featuring three different rooms for Chinese, Sushi, and Hibachi, this Vinings staple is loco for kids interested in locomotives. 7. 57th Fighter Group

Located at the end of the south runways of the Peachtree-Dekalb Airport, this long-time staple of Atlanta dining will wow your wee air aficionados in a major way. One-Pan Cheesy Black Bean Tacos

We don't even care what follows the words "one-pan"; we're in. In this case, though, add hearty black beans, green peppers, two kinds of cheese, red pepper crema, and a 15 minute prep time, and we're there for it.

Crispy Chickpea & Kale Salad with Cucumber, Pickled Shallot & Lemony Tahini Dressing Visit

Kale is still one of the best superfoods out there, so you can feel great about this salad. Massaged kale (so it's not too chewy) is coated in a tahini-garlic-lemon-yogurt dressing, then tossed with cucumbers and pickled shallots. Topped with seasoned extra-crispy chickpeas, you don't even have to be a salad person to love it!

Check out the recipe from Nathan’s Famous® below to get started.

Total Time Skill Level Servings

Hot dog buns 1 pkg(s)
Shredded lettuce As needed
Diced tomato As needed
Diced red onion As needed
Jalapeño peppers As needed
Chives As needed
Cheese sauce As needed
Sour cream As needed

Instructions

  1. Prep your veggies. Wash and dry all. If using a whole head of lettuce (such as iceberg), remove core, halve and quarter the head, then slice one wedge quarter into thin strips. If using romaine, slice off the bottom of the stalk, then slice leaves crosswise into strips. Dice the tomato and red onion. Remove the jalapeño stems then slice. Chop the chives. Famous Tip: Looking to really bring the heat? Slice up a jalapeño and toss all in a skillet on medium heat with a bit of olive oil and salt and pepper. Cook until slices start to blacken. Cooking them brings out an even deeper level of spice!
  2. Cook your hot dogs your favorite way. We suggest pan-fried with butter!
  3. Heat cheese sauce according to package directions.
  4. Assemble your dog! Nestle dog into the bun, then go to town on the toppings (just like you would a pile of nachos). Start with a generous amount of cheese sauce, spooned over the entire dog, then layer lettuce, tomatoes, onions and jalapeños. Add a large dollop of sour cream. Finish with a sprinkle of chives. Olé!

Tips to Stretch Your Dollar

Save your leftovers to make some tried-and-true nachos! Store your ingredients separately and when you’re ready to enjoy, melt them on top of your favorite chips for your next lunch or dinner.
