You like hearing the conductor shout as the engine chugs slowly back in time, the kids like the wild west cowboys and robbers, everyone digs the fantastic scenery, and one thing is certain—there’s something about trains. Whatever it is, families can have a full day of exploration and excitement while riding the rails. Read on to discover our picks for the country’s most dazzling train rides for kids.

The COASTER is a commuter train that runs north and south along the San Diego County coast from the Santa Fe Depot in downtown to Oceanside. Plan to stop in one of the coastal communities and pack a picnic to enjoy at the beach. Or, just enjoy the view of the Pacific Ocean along the route.

Begin by planning a trip by checking out the COASTER's online schedule. It should be noted that fares vary from start-to-end zone. For example, an adult round-trip fare from downtown San Diego to Oceanside (through 3 zones) is $11. Kids 5 and under ride free.

The special train events are also popular, offering themed rides like Dinosaur Days, Wizard’s Train, Wild West Days, the Hobo Train and of course, the North Pole Express. Dubbed the “Heber Creeper,” folklore claims the train had to “creep” along the treacherous pass through Provo Canyon, lending the locomotive its now legendary moniker.

Insider Tip: When catching a ride on the Creeper, be on the lookout for Black Jack Raven and the Soldier Hollow Gang, they may be lurking in the trees awaiting your arrival!

There are several special trips offered throughout the year, including the Teddy Bear’s Train Ride, the Pumpkin Patch Express, Father’s Day BBQ Train, the Happy Hobo and The Patriot Train. The Texas State Railroad is also the home of The Lone Ranger®; so if any bandits board the train, he’ll arrive in time to save the day!

Insider Tip: Want to stay a while? The Texas State Railroad campground in Rusk is filled with family-friendly amenities: a splash zone, nature trail, General Store, shuffleboard and more.

Narrow is right! The rails are only three feet wide and climb an astonishing 3,000 feet through the mountains. Originally built to carry gold and silver down from the peaks, this historic train now delights in carrying passengers behind vintage steam locomotives with bright shiny colors. Relive the sights and sounds of yesteryear for a spectacular journey.

Insider Tip: The Prospector Car is the only enclosed family-with-wee-ones-friendly car. Other options include the open-air gondola and the vintage coach, which provide sweeping views of the mountains.

The Grand Canyon Railroad - Arizona

Grand Canyon Railway

All aboard to the Grand Canyon! From 65 miles out, this adventure trip takes travelers to the edge of the canyon and back. Ride along the Colorado Plateau from the open desert to the pine mountains. This fun jaunt includes a visit from historical characters from the Wild Wild West. The Annual Pumpkin Patch ride is also great fun, and everyone is encouraged to wear costumes and brave the haunted rail car to select pumpkins from the patch only accessible by train.

Insider Tip: The extremely popular Polar Express Ride is now taking reservations for the Nov. - Dec. 2018 rides. Call 888-848-3511 or go online to make a reservation today.

The Strasburg Railroad holds several exciting events throughout the year for the little ones, like Day Out With Thomas™ and the Great Train Robbery.

Insider Tip: For your littlest passengers, try the Cranky Cars. The kids can take control of these mini hand-propelled cars and crank their way around a track.

Mount Washington Cog Railway - New Hampshire

archer10 via Flickr

This funky train is a one-of-a-kind adventure! It carries passengers up a three-mile-long trestle on the steepest railroad tracks in North America, to the 6,288-foot summit of Mount Washington. Once at the top, admire the awesome panoramic view, spanning the mountains and valleys of New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont, north into Canada, and east to the Atlantic Ocean. The Cog Railway runs from Apr.-Dec.

Insider Tip: Be on the lookout for the service house defying the laws of geometry along the steep grade!

10 Family Movies That Should Be on Your Radar in 2019

All the Kids Shows & Movies Coming to Netflix in January 2019

These Netflix Secret Codes Help You Find the Perfect Kids Show—Based on Their Mood

If you’ve ever wondered what the most popular Disney movie in the United States was, well you’re in luck. CableTV.com’s team of analysts looked at the Disney data and determined the country’s favoritest of the faves. So what did CableTV.com uncover? The Lion King is the number one Disney flick in America, ranking at the top of the list in a whopping 16 states.

Here are how some of the other top-ranking Disney films across the United States. Which Disney movie does your state claim as the best?

The Lion King

DisneyMusicVEVO via YouTube

The Lion King (1994) was a clear favorite among 16 different states and not limited to one specific region of the country, either. The story of Simba's coming-of-age tale-meets-Hamlet clearly has broad appeal across the United States. Here's where The Lion King reigns supreme: Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Wisconsin.

Bambi

Disney FR via YouTube

Each state where Bambi was the most popular Disney film makes total sense, as each has sweeping meadows and beautiful landscapes where fawns like Bambi are a common sight. Folks in the five states of Alaska, Maryland, Montana, Oklahoma and Virginia are absolutely twitterpated for Bambi (1942).

The Little Mermaid

DisneyMusicVEVO via YouTube

It makes sense that a place like Florida would have The Little Mermaid (1989)as its favorite Disney flick, but even dry desert states like Arizona, Nevada and Texas have a longing for what's under the sea, too.

The Aristocats

TheBestofDisney via YouTube

Minnesota, Missouri and Tennessee are home to the coolest cats—and the biggest fans of The Aristocats (1970).

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

Walt Disney Animation Studios via YouTube

Kentucky, Massachusetts and Washington must really love their honey and one silly ol' bear, where The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh seems to be these states' favorite Disney flick.

Robin Hood

YouTube Movies via YouTube

Maine, New Hampshire and Oregon love the tale of a clever fox named Robin Hood who steals from the rich to help the poor folk of Nottingham (1973).

The Fox and The Hound

Susie Harrison via YouTube

Nebraska, North and South Dakota love Disney's 1981 classic, The Fox and the Hound.

Aladdin

DisneyDefinition via YouTube

There's something about Aladdin (1992) that the coastal states of California and New Jersey can't get enough of—perhaps it's the flying carpets, Robin Williams as the Genie, the allure of "Prince Ali" (a.k.a., the best Disney song ever) or maybe just dreams of "A Whole New World."

Mulan, Dumbo & More

Disney via YouTube

Nine states favored films that weren't the favorites of any other state, representing a wide swath of Disney classics, both new and old, including: Arkansas (Pocahontas), Delaware (Lady and the Tramp), Hawaii (Mulan), Idaho (Sleeping Beauty), Mississippi (Fantasia), New Mexico (Alice in Wonderland), New York (Dumbo), Vermont (One Hundred and One Dalmatians), West Virginia (Snow White) and Wyoming (Hercules).

...And Then There's Utah

DisneySingItVideos via YouTube

Utah really likes its Disney movies—so much that there wasn't just a two- or three-way tie for the Beehive State's favorite Disney films. Utah had a 14-way tie for the following Disney favorites: Snow White, Pinocchio, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, The Jungle Book, Robin Hood, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules and Tarzan!

We’re just going to jump right in and say, you can’t go wrong planning a family vacation to Cancun. The travel time from anywhere in the U.S. is reasonable, even with young kids in tow, the beaches are pristine, the weather is a dream and it offers activities whether you like to dig your toes in the sand for non-stop beach bumming or explore morning, noon and night. Read on to hear about a new resort with a familiar name and the recipe for a vacation well done in Mexico’s Cancun.

photo: Panama Jack Canun

WHERE TO STAY

You might be familiar with Panama Jack for sunscreen and hats, but now he’s inviting you to immerse yourself in his laid-back approach to life at his resorts. Introduced this spring, Panama Jack Resorts Cancun has two outdoor swimming pools, a stunning beach with water so clear you’ll think you’re in a bathtub, Camp Jack with supervised activities for ages 4-12, waterpark with slides and splash zones, an ocean-view mini golf and water park, live entertainment, movie nights and #Hashtag teen zone with video games and activities for ages 12-17. They also offer after-hours babysitting so you can schedule a kid-free date night.

The rooms all have a good amount of space, but we’d recommend the Family Junior Suite that accommodates 2 adults and 3 kids with twin bunk beds and access to Camp Jack from the terrace.

photo: Dining at Panama Jack via Maria Chambers

WHERE TO EAT
With Panama Jack Resorts Cancun being an all-inclusive resort, it takes much of the guesswork out of where to dine, as you never need to leave the resort. Even the pickiest of palates will find a spot to feed their hunger with 13 dining options featuring flavors from around the world that cover everything from tacos to an Italian feast, fresh ingredients, imaginative recipes and masterfully trained chefs at the helm.

Insider tip: Panama Jack Coffee Co., located in the lobby with a hang-worthy second floor overlook perfect for a morning of people watching, bakes fresh cinnamon rolls every thirty minutes that are so good you’ll be thinking about them even after you return home. Trust us, grab one, and don’t share.

photo: Tulum via Maria Chambers

WHERE TO PLAY
The pages of your kid’s textbook will come alive with day trips to see what was left behind from Mexico’s mysterious Mayan civilizations. There are two ruin sites we would recommend that make for worthwhile full-day excursions, which can be booked with the assistance of Panama Jack’s staff. Tulum is extremely well-preserved and is the only ruins with a gorgeous ocean view, so bring along a swimsuit to take a quick plunge in the sea. If you decide to rent a car to make the drive to Tulum, consider a stopover for shopping and lunching in the up-and-coming town of Tulum.

photo: Chichen Itza via Maria Chambers

The other we recommend is Chichen Itza. The signature Kukulkan Pyramid that dominates the site, also known as El Castillo (the castle), was designated as one of the seven wonders of the world in 2007. Built as a physical representation of the Mayan calendar, it has 91 steps on on each of the 4 sides totaling 364 steps and it’s 9 platforms bisected by a staircase on each side represent the 18 months in a Mayan calendar, it’s a shining example of the Mayan’s phenomenal understanding of math and astronomy.

Insider tip: Minecraft fiends will find it hard to resist purchasing a bit of obsidian available at one of the hundreds of vendor stands set up within Chichen Itza, but beware, it’s most likely a fake.

photo: Ik Kil Cenote via Maria Chambers

A must-do if you head in the direction of Chichen Itza is a reprieve from the heat in the cool waters of the 135-feet-deep Ik Kil Cenote. If you’re unfamiliar, cenotes are natural sink holes from the collapse of limestone that expose groundwater underneath, a natural swimming pool, essentially. And, Ik Kil is arguably one of the most beautiful in all of Mexico. Not only that, but if offers amenities you won’t find at some other cenotes, like changing rooms, bathrooms and an onsite restaurant.

If you choose to strike out on your own to visit either ruins, be sure to take pesos to pay for entry and parking, a bathing suit to take a dip, comfy shoes as the terrain is uneven, mosquito spray, a bottle of water, sunscreen and a camera to capture the moment. One more tip, we recommend getting there right when they open as the crowds and heat increases as the morning moves along. Plus, as it only takes about an hour to conquer the ruins, an early start means you can be sitting by the pool, sipping margaritas at Panama Jack by late afternoon.

photo: Dolphin Discovery via Flickr

The vacation becomes unforgettable when you hop a 20-minute ferry ride to Isla Mujeres to swim with dolphins at Dolphin Discovery. You’ll be provided coffee and a light breakfast on the cruise over and after a short orientation, you’ll slip into a life jacket to meet your new marine friends. Depending on the program you choose, you’ll get a kiss, hug, belly ride or a foot push from one of these beautiful animals.

photo: Captain Hook courtesy of Mar Y Cielo R. via Yelp

Choose the excitement of the pirate life over frolicking with dolphins by setting sail with the most famous captain of all, Captain Hook. The sound of cannons marks the start of your experience as you push off from Cancun’s marina for an evening of contests, music that’ll get you dancing and a full pirate show. As you grab grub, The Captain introduces you to his crew and tells tales of his escapades at sea, but don’t get too comfortable as the approach of another ship cloaked in darkness sets off an authentic pirate battle right before your landlubbing eyes.

photo: Ventura Park courtesy of Linda G. via Yelp

The last stop on your Cancun vacation is Ventura Park, a family amusement park that covers the full spectrum of interests, whether you’re a zipline-loving adult or roller-coaster thrill-seeking child. The only adventure park in Cancun’s hotel zone encompasses Grand Prix that puts you behind the wheel at a seaside go-kart track, Wet ‘n Wild for water slides, water playground, wave pool and lazy river, Dolphinaris provides another opportunity to befriend dolphins, Fun World for kid-approved coasters and rides, Aaah! to make like Tarzan on ziplines and bungee-swings, and Underworld for high-tech arcade gaming that includes VR and laser-tag-inspired bumper cars.

18 Ways to Give Your Kids a 1980s Summer

10 Swimsuits Perfect for Moms You Can Order from Amazon Right Now
Your Ultimate Summer Reading List Is Here

Yes, D.C.’s Smithsonian Zoo is free and awesome and if you haven’t paid a visit you must go (Pandas!). But if you’ve been there, done that, and you need a unique animal-loving fix, consider a visit to the Metro Richmond Zoo, one of the largest and most unique in our area that’s just a quick two-hour drive south of the city. With more than 2,000 animals spread across 70 acres of land, answering the call of the wild can feel a bit overwhelming. Here are five places to get started.

#1 The Feeding Giraffes
One feature that makes this zoo so popular and fun is the ample opportunity you’ll have to interact with a variety of animals. In the African Plains section, which features addax, impala, zebra, and kudu, along with storks, cranes, ostriches, cheetahs and elephants, you can actually feed the giraffes from a special platform. The zoo houses a herd of nine reticulated giraffe and they are all too happy to nibble some pre-purchased treats from your hand. You can also feed deer, goats, sheep, donkeys and antelope in the children’s farm area.

#2 Monkey Business
Primates are a favorite here and you’ll find rows of lemurs, marmosets, tamarins, New and Old World monkeys, as well as quite a few apes, including siamangs, orangutans, and chimpanzees. You can get up-close-and-personal (but maintain a modicum of safety) through a glass window with Farley and Zoe, two goofy orangutans.

#3 Birds of a Feather…
If birds are your thing, you’ll marvel at the Chilean flamingos and African penguins, and a walk-through aviary of ducks, pheasants, ibises, and spoonbills. The kids will love being able to enter the budgie exhibit and feed the brightly-colored budgerigars, aka parakeets, from feed sticks.

#4 Cats Steal the Show
Favor cute things with whiskers? You’ll enjoy the fact that Metro Richmond Zoo is a Cheetah Breeding Center and has gained worldwide attention for facilitating multiple births of adorable cheetah cubs.

#5 Hitch a Ride
Perhaps the ultimate interactive el
ement at Metro Richmond Zoo is the newly added Treetop Zoofari zip line adventure, where you can zip from tree to tree like Tarzan and get a bird’s eye view of the animals. But if zip lining requires a little too much adrenaline for you, take advantage of the zoo’s Safari Sky Ride, which will give you a similar view, but from the comfort of a moving seat. Or if you prefer to stay closer to the ground, you can take the safari train for a special view of India and Chinese natives, such as blackbuck, mouflon, Himalayan tahr and takin. Impress your little ones by mentioning that the takin is considered a national treasure in China, much like the giant pandas.

Metro Richmond Zoo
8300 Beaver Bridge Rd. (Moseley, Va)
Open: Monday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m.
Cost: $17.25; kids ages 2-11/$11.25

Hulu is giving parents another reason to choose its services over its competitors. In an everlasting battle with Netflix and Amazon Prime, Hulu has announced another multi-year deal with Disney. In this new agreement, Hulu is gaining exclusive rights to stream classic Disney films such as Mulan, Pocohantas, and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

In total, over 50 titles will become available on Hulu in the months ahead. More titles include Hercules, Air Bud, Sister Act, Lilo & Stitch, Tarzan, The Mighty Ducks, The Princess and the Frog, and Muppet Treasure Island.

Hulu and the Disney-ABC Television Group began began their partnership in early 2016, after agreeing to distribute 500 episodes and more than 20 original movies from The Disney-ABC Television Group’s suite of networks to the Hulu Kids library. It’s the largest kids programming deal made between the two companies to date.
