We’re already gushing over Rebel Girls just-released new book, Rebels Girls Lead: 25 Tales of Powerful Women not to mention the recently announced Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Real-Life Tales of Black Girl Magic coming in the fall of this year. Add to that the series of new Black Women’s History podcasts out this month and we’re doing the renegade-women-happy dance (we’re calling this a thing!).

Now, the Rebel Girls have teamed up with global learning platform Kahoot! for a very special series of online, educational games designed to teach and empower children everywhere. Read on to get the scoop.

Using digital games on the Kahoot! platform, Rebel Girls will shine a light on Women’s history like never before. Each gaming experience will be curated and released in honor of Black History Month and Women’s History Month. Games will be dedicated to learning more about phenomenal Black women, with quizzes like “Extraordinary Women Throughout Black History” and lessons like “Build a Business Like Madam CJ Walker,” allowing kids to learn in an immersive way.

“Too often, children’s books and education do not adequately recognize or celebrate women’s accomplishments,” said Rebel Girls Head of Digital Content, Lilly Workneh. “Rebel Girls is filling the gap and excited to partner with Kahoot! to bring these stories to life in delightful and fun ways through our new slate of online games.”

Other games will highlight Rebel Girls’ four key categories: leaders, champions, creators, and inventors. Kids can learn a diverse range of women and will be tested on history and the legends who shaped it.

“Empowering learners to reach their full potential is our purpose at Kahoot!, so teaming up with Rebel Girls to empower and inspire children is an amazing fit,” said Craig Narveson, Director of Strategic Partnerships at Kahoot!. “I’m a huge fan of Rebel Girls, and have seen the positive impact of their books with my own 7-year-old daughter. I couldn’t be more excited to join forces with Rebel Girls to bring stories of extraordinary women to life in a new and interactive way for children around the world.”

If you’re lucky, you may have seen a welcome sign on your last Costco run. It appears that after a months-long hiatus, Costco is bringing back its fan favorite churros!

Instagram account @costcobuys spotted signage at a Huntington Beach, California Costco that shows a twisted churro “coming soon” with a new price tag of $1.49. Before you get too riled up about the $.50 price hike, the new cinnamon and sugar treat is actually bigger than its predecessor––and now has butter on it.

If you remember, Costco announced back in August 2020 that they would be testing out an updated Churro recipe and many warehouses saw the old version removed from the food court menu. There’s no official word yet on which locations will get the new treat, nor when.

Be sure to keep your eyes peeled on your next Costco run!

Have you ever stressed over keeping your family’s heirloom ornaments safe? Last year, Ayaan Naqvi, 12, noticed that ornaments kept falling off the Christmas tree and thought there had to be a better way to keep them safe. When a school project called for an invention the Ornament Anchor was born.

Ornament Anchor

When parents and teachers swarmed his booth asking if they could buy some, Ayaan knew he was on to something. With his brother, Mika’il, 13, as his business partner, the two worked together to design the product, patent it, create an awesome website, calculate profit margins and do their own market analysis all on their own. They tested the market last December through a grassroots strategy and sold 6,500 ornament anchors at local craft and Christmas Fairs.

Ornament Anchor

Ornament Anchor launched in Nov. 2019, only three months before the pandemic began. For Ayaan, it was difficult to suddenly quarantine and homeschool while launching a product. He had to completely pivot his strategy of introducing the product to major retailers this year at various trade shows and expos which all got cancelled.

The brothers didn’t let those cancellations slow them down. Ornament Anchor has sold out on QVC twice and the boys have been featured on Good Morning America. Their business has earned a net profit of over $250,000 this year. Ayaan has had a passion for animals so he donates a portion of the proceeds to local animal shelters.

Ornament Anchors come in packs of 24, 48 and 96. Each anchor can hold up to 48 ounces (3 pounds), so you can display all your favorite ornaments without worrying about them sliding off and breaking. Ayaan and Mika’il are saving Christmas, one ornament at a time.

Christine Hernandez

Christine Hernandez is a Mama on a mission to help other Mama's find their village and get the support they need to thrive.

The moment I saw that positive pregnancy test for the first time the part of me that wasn’t terrified went into instant Mama Bear mode. I wanted to make sure I ate all the right things, took the right supplements but what I didn’t realize was that what I was putting ON my body was just as important as what I was putting IN my body and my personal care products needed a little bit of a change up.

I used The Environmental Working Group’s (ewg..org) searchable database to check how the ingredients in the products I was using measured up against their safety guidelines and I was surprised at what I found. It took a little of combing through the shelves at Target and some trial and error to find things that were both clean AND effective but once I found these five staples, I have never gone back to my old stuff.

1

Mineral Salt Crystal Deodorant

Crystal Deodorant- Your Pits Will Thank You

$6.37

In my 20's I had a swollen lymph node under my arm for two years. It was so big that you could see it when I wore tank tops and it made my armpit look weird. I went to numerous doctors until one suggested I stop using deodorant. Unwilling to just wear NOTHING, I scoured the healthfood store shelves and this Crystal's claim of being amazing intrigued me. It is literally just mineral salts and you wet it and rub it on your pits and go about your business smelling fresher than a daisy without any nasty chemicals. Five years later, that lymph node is no longer swollen and I will never use conventional deodorant again (and I don't smell, you can ask my hubs).

Belli Acne Control Spot Treatment

Banish Those Pregnancy Pimples Safely

Most over the counter acne treatments contain salicylic acid, which some providers advise against use during pregnancy. Belli Acne Control Spot Treatment features colloidal sulfur, tea tree oil and chamomile that absorbs quickly and penetrates pores to help control blemishes and keep skin clear. It does not include glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or benzoyl peroxide, common acne-fighting ingredients that can over dry or irritate the skin and are not recommended during pregnancy. Every Belli product is allergy tested, free of paraben preservatives, gluten, phthalates, and artificial dyes or fragrances and is approved by OBGYN's & dermatologists. I was one of the (un)lucky ones who's pregnancy glow faded into pregnancy pimples and Belli was my go-to!

SheaMoisture Daily Hydration Body Oil

Rub That Belly, Baby

$9.99

There is some evidence that whether or not you get stretch marks is hereditary but that did not stop me from slathering my belly with this oil on the daily. Did I get stretch marks, no. Do I know for sure it was because I used this oil, also no. But, it was nice to take some time every night to rub my belly and connect with the tiny person growing inside. It doesn't contain any sulfates, parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, or petroleum and is cruelty free!

Coin battery ingestions by young children has been on the rise for nearly twenty years, but Duracell is doing something about it. In an innovative move, the trusted battery brand has developed a new bitter-tasting coating on specific coin batteries to keep kids safe and help deter accidental ingestions.

Duracell Lithium Coin batteries (sizes 2032, 2025, and 2016) are now made with a clear, non-toxic, bitter coating. This unsavory coating is specifically added to batteries that measure 20mm, which is similar to the size of a child’s esophagus in hope of helping to discouraging swallowing.

Unfortunately, when children swallow lithium coin batteries, they can become stuck and burn through the sensitive tissue of the esophagus in only two hours. It is Duracell’s hope that the new coating, coupled with child-safe packaging and other education can help prevent the swallowing of coin batteries.

The new batteries have been awarded the Parent Tested Parent Approved Winner’s Seal of Approval.

In light of our current COVID-19 reality, pregnant women everywhere are more cautious than ever when it comes to protecting their pandemic pregnancies. Learning to steer your own medical care and pregnancy and choosing your outcome—these are really important when it comes to getting great obstetric care.

Patients often don’t realize that they can make some key choices. Most doctors won’t tell them what the choices are, and most patients don’t know they have choices to make. For example, here are some issues pregnant women may wish to discuss with their doctors so they can make important care choices:

  • Birth room support (i.e., partner, doula)
  • VBAC—vaginal birth after a previous cesarean section birth
  • Use of low-dose Cytotec for induction of labor instead of Pitocin
  • Effective procedures for decreasing the risks of preterm labor
  • Reducing the risks of maternal complications during and after pregnancy

And, if you are pregnant right now, during the coronavirus outbreak, here are 5 more questions to ask your doctor:

1. Have you already been exposed? You have the right to know whether or not your doctor has already been exposed to COVID-19 or not, and what the implications are either way. Have they been tested recently? When was the last negative test? Don’t hesitate to gather information to put yourself more at ease.

2. What will happen if I’m positive for COVID-19 when I deliver? Make a plan with your doctor so that you have one less thing to stress about if this occurs. As much as you don’t want your baby whisked away after birth, the plan to protect and test your new baby for the illness will include isolating you from her/him initially after birth.

3. Will my baby be immune if I have/had COVID-19? One Chinese case study found that a mother who had COVID-19 and delivered her baby via C-section passed immunity onto her baby but not the illness. Other studies, however, have shown cases of mothers passing the virus on to their babies.

4. Will you be the one delivering my baby? Often, the O.B. you’re working with may not actually be the one to deliver your baby. Asking this question now gives you an opportunity to understand who will be there during delivery, and who else you need to talk to about their COVID-19 exposure and testing.

5. Will I be allowed to have my support team in the birthing room with me? If you want your partner and/or a doula in the birthing room with you, this is a very important question to ask your doctor. The rules as we navigate the pandemic are constantly changing and under evaluation, so ask now, and ask again as birth gets closer.
