Forget milk and cookies. When you shell out $5 for a box of tasty Girl Scout cookies, you’ve earned the right to enjoy a handful (or more) after the kids go to bed. Better yet, why not pair off your evening snack with a nice glass of wine? Ah, but which wine goes best with which cookie? Before you open every bottle in your wine fridge, we already did the heavy drinking—er, lifting—for you.

Here are the best Girl Scout cookie and wine pairings, as tested by us.

Thin Mints

While Thin Mints are the reigning champion when it comes to cookie sales, they are one of the most difficult cookies to pair with wine, all because of that delicious chocolate and mint flavor combo. If you really must pair these with anything other than milk, make it a sweet dessert wine like a Sherry or Muscat. Not a fan of sweet wines? Go for a softer red like a Merlot or Syrah.

Samoas & Caramel deLites

As the most decadent cookie in the Girl Scout collection, the Samoa or Caramel deLite should be paired with an equally sweet and rich wine. Pour a glass of of dessert wine like a Tawny Port to go with this caramel, coconut and chocolate confection and you’ll be in dessert heaven.

Tagalongs & Peanut Butter Patties

A rich, full-bodied glass of Cabernet Sauvignon is essentially the wine version of this popular well-rounded cookie. Combining sweet berries with savory notes, a cab sav is the perfect complement to the Girl Scouts' tasty marriage of chocolate and peanut butter.

Trefoils & Shortbread

Compared to the rest of the assortment, the oldest of the Girl Scout Cookie offerings may seem plain, but when paired with wine, the sweetness of these buttery vanilla shortbreads shines through. Pair them with a Moscato or a Riesling to really bring out their vanilla notes.

Do-si-Dos & Peanut Butter Sandwiches

Pair these salty, sweet peanut butter cookies with a soft, fruity red like a Merlot, Shiraz or Pinot Noir for the perfect balance.

Girl Scout S'mores

What’s more summery than roasting s’mores over a campfire? And the only wine that absolutely screams summer fun is Rosé. A light, sparkly glass of the blush-colored wine, or even a Sparkling Rosé, pairs perfectly with this sandwich cookie. If you're snacking on the chocolate-coated variety of this Girl Scout cookie, opt for a sweet dessert wine like a Port or Sherry.

Lemonades & Lemon-Ups

The light, lemony goodness of these crispy cookies pairs perfectly with a citrusy, but sweet dessert wine like Riesling.

Toffee-Tastic & Caramel Chocolate Chip

These gluten-free cookie varieties have a mild, not-too-sweet flavor with a biscotti-like texture that pairs well with a creamy, nutty white wine, like a Chardonnay and Viognier. If you're really feeling the biscotti vibe, try dipping it in a dessert wine like a Ruby Port.

The Ravenna Police Department recently issued a warning via Facebook. The Ohio PD wants residents to watch out for a “highly addictive substance” that’s about to hit the town’s streets—and it’s probably not what you think it is.

So what exactly do the Ravenna police want town citizens to stay on the lookout for? Hint: the addictive “substance” also goes by several names, including Thin Mints, S’mores and Lemonades!

The too-cute, and now-viral, post warns residents about items that are, “Distributed by strong, smart, fearless young women who will lure you in with their story and get you hooked.” If you have any doubts about the highly addictive nature of this substance (a.k.a. Girl Scout cookies), the PD added, “We know many people think I will just get one box. But one turns into two and two turns into five and the next thing you know you are hiding ‘Thin Mints’ in the freezer.”

Ravenna residents shouldn’t worry about their ability to resist the overly addictive items. If they do happen to buy a box (or a few), the police department also posted, “We want you to know we are here for you. We have set up a disposal location for these “cookies” at the police department. Just drop them off 24/7 and we will properly dispose of them for you.”

These Girl Scout Troops Are Changing the World with Their Cookie Sales

Girl Scout Cookie season has officially arrived and along with it comes a brand new cookie to tempt your tastebuds.

Girl Scouts USA has just announced the new Lemon-Ups cookie, the newest addition in form of a crispy lemon cookie baked with inspiring messages. “I am a go-getter” and “I am an innovator” are among the eight different phrases the cookies feature. The Lemon-Ups are replacing Savannah Smiles, a different lemon cookie which was retired last year.

The Lemon-Ups are not to be confused with Lemonades, which are a shortbread cookie with lemon-flavored icing. Each variety is available in select regions across the country along with the rest of the cookie line up, which still includes fan favorites, like Thin Mints and Samoas.

In addition to the newest cookie, GSUSA also revealed a brand new look to the cookie packaging for 2020. The updated boxes feature new images of real Girl Scouts taking part in activities like camping, canoeing and space science exploration.

“Everyone loves Girl Scout Cookies—but the program is about so much more than cookies,” said GSUSA CEO Sylvia Acevedo. “Girls learn about entrepreneurship as they run their own cookie businesses. The important business and financial literacy skills girls learn through the program are proven to build their leadership skills and position them for success in the future. When you purchase cookies you are helping girls power their Girl Scout experience and you’re supporting female entrepreneurs.”

The 8 Best Girl Scout Cookie & Wine Pairings—as Tested by Us

The Girl Scouts Just Unveiled a Whopping 30 New Badges Focused on STEM

Dear Confessional,

I admit it. I’m a complete hypocrite. I’m not afraid to say it, and a part of me believes that I truly deserve it. The “practice what you preach” philosophy is ok to a point, but as the mom of the house, I deserve some leniency here.

Even though I’m utterly exhausted most of the time, I don’t stop until I’m cross-eyed at bedtime, mid-lullaby. As the home cleaner, shopper, chef, tutor, mom-doctor, organizer, blogger, and entrepreneur, I have confirmed my suspicion—that I am a complete hypocrite. It’s almost an art, actually, and I’m totally ok with it. I also believe that I’m not the only one, so here are my top 10 scenarios that showcase the art of hypocrisy, because we parents need a little levity to the incredible rollercoaster that is parenting. Enjoy the ride.

1. Too Much Junk in the Trunk: Just say “no” to kids’ binging on heaps of junk food… and yes to the Supermom diving elbow-deep into the Nutella jar or face-planting the pint of Ben & Jerry’s, during or after a kid tantrum.

2. Yakkity-Yak, Don’t Talk Back: “Don’t you dare talk back or raise your voice!”… and we say that while raising our voice, but of course. Busted.

3. Sleep Time On-Time: Oh the never-ending sleep issue. In all honesty, maybe we just want some more evening ME time. Maybe we know what happens when our over-tired kids run-amok in the later hours of the evening, once exhaustion sets in. Maybe we really just want them to grow and be healthy. Regardless of the reason, why is it that when Supermoms have the opportunity to go to bed early like we daydream about, we then become transfixed on prime-time tv or glaring, zombie-eyed at the world of social media?

4. Blowing a Gas-ket: Manners, manners, manners—so important to teach our kids effective manners while they’re young, right? Burping and farting all merit a big “excuse me” to learn that it’s not “nice.” But let’s be real for a moment, sometimes it just feels awesome to let a big one rip, take a big sniff, laugh about it, and maybe even boldly take all the credit.

5. Screen Time Sayonara: Supermom may be the queen of lecturing about too much screen time… yet we have no issue, whatsoever, walking around with the phone in hand for another “look” at the unimportant happenings on social media—yes, even while on the toilet.

6. Name-Calling Nonsense: “No name-calling!”… except when Supermom louses up with some less-than-classy name-calling metaphors that accurately describe the kids crawling under the table, rolling around the floor, or refusing to clean up a disaster.

7. Pick and Flick: There’s something so disgusting and soothing about cleaning house deep in the trenches of your schnoz. As we keep reminding the kids to “get your finger out of there,” for some reason, parents have no problem digging deep ourselves, and especially while driving. Do you really think that other drivers can’t see you in there? Do you really think that the nasty little boogie magically disappears just because you flicked it and can’t find it? Uh-huh.

8. Importance of the Pyramid: Supermoms love to emphasize the value in nutrition and eating a well-balanced meal. Kids may even have a stare-off with their veggies, yet if Supermom wants to have a heaping bowl of cereal or half a box of thin mints and call that dinner… then back off slowly, husbands, and don’t make any sudden moves!

9. Pet Snacks: “Don’t feed the dog table food! No more after that one, you’ll make her sick!” Supermom then turns the corner and feeds the fat dog off of the plate because those puppy eyes are too hard to resist—and she also gets to clean up the vomit the next morning. Don’t question us, just accept it.

10. Tread Lightly: On a family get-a-way, Supermom is feeling a bit over-indulgent. After moaning about her bikini bloatation,   swearing to start cutting back right away, and then blaming the dryer for “shrinking” all of her pants, DO NOT say a word or even make direct eye-contact when she orders another creamy frozen drink and dessert. Just call the maintenance person to check the dryer and tell her she’s beautiful, trust me.

Feel free to share your own Supermom hypocrisies. Own it and learn to laugh about it. You are not alone in this wonderful, comical, crazy, emotional, and empowering journey called parenting.

With Love,

Ruthi

If you still haven’t scored your Girl Scout Cookie fix, there’s no better time than National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend.

This Friday through Sunday, Feb. 22 to 24, Girl Scouts across the nation will be out in full effect at local stores and walkabouts in neighborhoods selling their tasty goods. Every cookie purchase helps not only your tastebuds, but the entire girl-led organization. Sales fund troop projects and experiences, as well as programming at the local level, such as outdoor adventure and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Many Girl Scouts also invest their earnings back into their communities.

In some locations, like the Los Angeles area, buying cookies this weekend can also earn you some extra perks. If you happen to buy a box of Thin Mints with a Golden Ticket, you could be the recipient of 100 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies!

Girl Scout Cookies can only be purchased from a registered Girl Scout. To find Girl Scouts selling cookies near you, visit www.girlscoutcookies.org or use the official Girl Scout Cookie Finder app, free on iOS and Android devices.

Thin Mints, Samoas and Trefoils, oh my! It’s time for the most delicious season of the year—the 2019 Girl Scout Cookie season—and this year there’s a brand new flavor for our inner cookie monster to enjoy.

The new cookie flavor is called Caramel Chocolate Chip and features rich caramel, semi-sweet chocolate chips with a hint of sea salt in a chewy cookie—and it’s even gluten-free! The newest gluten-free offering joins Toffetastic, which debuted in 2015. Sorry Trio fans, the other gluten-free flavor which also launched in 2015 won’t be returning this year.

Depending upon where you live only one of these gluten-free options—either the Caramel Chocolate Chip or Toffeetastic—will be available to buy. The Girl Scouts employ two different bakeries to create their delectable assortment of Girl Scout Cookies; each bakery offers slightly different variations on the same cookies. As such, each Girl Scout Council’s cookie offerings are regionally-dependent based on which cookie bakery they use. (That’s why those coconut cookies drizzled in chocolate are Samoas in some parts of the country and Caramel De-Lites in others.)

Every year, the Girl Scouts parade their coveted cookies and every year we are more than happy to shell out a few bucks to gobble them up. Not only are they delicious, but buying Girl Scout cookies helps support an organization dedicated to empowering young girls with leadership and outdoor skills, STEM knowledge and financial literacy—among many other valuable skills.

Photo: Shelia Herman via Flickr

The cookie program itself teaches Girl Scouts entrepreneurial skills like goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and even business ethics as they promote and sell their products like a running a small business. Those skills last a lifetime, too.

Research shows that 53 percent of female entrepreneurs are former Girl Scouts. In addition, all Girl Scouts that participate in the cookie sales program have the opportunity to enter the Cookie Pro Contest. In partnership with DC Super Hero Girls, GSUSA will reward exceptional cookie boss girls who take the lead, set high goals for themselves, bring positive change to their communities and learn valuable entrepreneurial skills.

The earnings the Girl Scouts make on those cookies goes towards programs and activities throughout the year, including outdoor adventure and STEM programming—and many girls put the money toward impactful community projects right in their own backyards. In 2018, the Girl Scouts added a whopping 30 new STEM related badges to their program.

And if you need something tasty to pair with your cookies this year, you’re in luck. Beginning next month, Dunkin’ stores will serve up limited edition drinks based on Girl Scout Cookie flavors. As a delicious bonus, many Dunkin’ locations across the country will also invite Girl Scouts to set up cookie booths outside its stores, so you can hit up one spot to fulfill all your cookie cravings.

7 Perfect Girl Scout Cookie Copycats at Trader Joe’s to Satisfy Your Cravings

This New Girl Scout Cookie Flavor Just Might Unseat Thin Mints as Top Cookie

The Girl Scouts Just Unveiled a Whopping 30 New Badges Focused on STEM

Girl Scout cookies are a wonderful thing, but only getting to enjoy them one time a year is not. As it turns out, there are plenty of options to keep you happy until you can officially purchase your weight in cookies from some of the world’s youngest entrepreneurs outside your local grocery store. Keep reading for some popular Girl Scout cookies alternatives at Trader Joe’s.

Mini Dark Chocolate Mint Coins

Thin Mints are the top-selling Girl Scout cookie—and with good reason! They are refreshing and chocolatey cookies that are just big enough to satisfy your sweet tooth, and TJ's has caught on. This year, they released their own version called Mini Dark Chocolate Mint Coins, which will be on the shelves from January through September. After that you can stock up big time on Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Mint Stars for the Thin Mint vibe!

A box of Mint Coins is only $1.99.

Peanut Butter Roundels

Creamy peanut butter that's covered in delicious milk chocolate? That's the description of both the Girl Scout Peanut Butter Patties and Trader Joe's Peanut Butter Roundels. Get your PB fix year-round when you shop TJ's and enjoy the 2-inch wide cookie that's covered in either milk or dark chocolate!

You can find an 8-count box for $3.49 any time of year at Trader Joe's.

Coffee Toffee Shortbread Cookies

Trader Joe's knows how to take an already delicious cookie and make it better. Trader Joe's Coffee Toffee Shortbread Cookie starts out like the Girl Scouts' Toffee-tastic Cookie—which has buttery shortbread and hunks of toffee—and is then topped with chocolate to make the perfect cookie for dunking.

Snag a box for just $2.99 at TJ's

Meyer Lemon Cookie Thins

Trader Joe's Bakersfield via Instagram

Fans of Girl Scout Lemonades will love the tart Meyer Lemon Cookie Thins from Trader Joe's. While the thinner version doesn't boast the lemon frosting on the Lemonades that we love sinking our teeth into, it has all the citrusy tang we love about the OG cookie.

Campfire S'mores Bar

Last year, the Girl Scouts introduced two new S'mores cookies, both inspired by a staple of the scouting experience: s'mores. While we totally get that this Trader Joe's alternative isn't technically a cookie, it has all the best parts about S'mores and thus, is a great alternative. Enjoy milk chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers––all without having to build a fire of your own.

One large Campfire S'mores Bar is just $2.99 at Trader Joe's.

All Butter Shortbread Cookies with Chocolate Filling

Karly Wood for Red Tricycle

While the traditional Thanks-A-Lot cookies from the Girl Scouts have chocolate on the bottom of their shortbread cookie, the Trader Joe's version has a tasty, chocolatey center. Regardless, that buttery and savory flavor is still there, just like the original cookie with all the fun ways to say "thank you."

A large box of All Butter Shortbread Cookies with Chocolate Filling is only $4.99 in the cookie section at TJ's.

Walker's Pure Butter Shortbread Cookies

Karly Wood for Red Tricycle

The Girls Scouts' most basic cookie, the Trefoil, is as purist as they come. You won't spy the silhouette of a hard working young lady on the Walker's version of shortbread cookies found at Trader Joe's, but you will get to enjoy all the buttery goodness that comes with a legit shortbread cookie.

A 5 oz. box is only $3.49 at your neighborhood Trader Joe's.

So, the only question left to answer is, how many boxes will you toss into your shopping card on your next Trader Joe’s run?
